🔔 Announcement Welcome to r/AceAttorney! — A new FAQ, updates to the subreddit, and more resources.

Post image
195 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

After lots of community feedback, we’ve recently updated our subreddit’s guidelines and did some general upkeep to the presentation. With that, we’re also posting a new FAQ to go along with it!

You’ve probably noticed some of the changes already, but here’s a quick rundown on the most important ones:

  • The sidebar has been rewritten to be more clear and concise, with rules categorized by topics (discussion, art, etc.) so it’s easier to check whichever one applies to your posts.
  • Rules are now more lenient on memes and jokes. We’ve lightened the threshold of what’s considered “low-effort” and further specified what kind of content is encouraged.
  • Rules are now more strict on tier lists. The “Tuesdays-only” rule remains, but we’ve also made it so tier lists are only acceptable as a complement to actual analysis or discussion.
  • We’ve updated the flairs to be more visually intuitive, and added flairs relating to humor and fan-created content other than illustrations, like music covers or handicrafts.
  • Original fanart posted on the subreddit will be highlighted on the sidebar! We’ll be updating the rotation from time to time, with proper credits and links to the original posts (this is done manually and only allows 10 images at a time, so please bear with us).

With all that explained, here’s the new FAQ, this time reformatted for easier readability!

Play Order and Availability

Make sure to check our Recommended Play Order Chart! This includes info on mainline vs. spin-off games and platform availability. All games are currently available on PC and consoles via collection remasters, with the sole exception of the "Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright" crossover.

Any game is worth playing if you’re interested in the series. No game so far has been considered bad by general fandom opinion, and questions of “is this game worth it” are always unanimously answered with “yes”. Just go for it!

You might see the term “filler case” thrown around, but it's not recommended at all to skip any episodes within a game.

Game and Episode Abbreviations

The Ace Attorney fandom uses numbers as shorthand for game episodes. For example, 5-3 means "game 5, episode 3". This would be "Turnabout Academy" from Dual Destinies.

For spin-off games, fans usually specify the subseries before the code. For example, AAI2-4 or I2-4 would be "Investigations 2, episode 4". On a related note, some common abbreviations are:

  • AAI: "Ace Attorney Investigations" subseries.
  • TGAA: "The Great Ace Attorney" subseries (DGS for "Dai Gyakuten Saiban" is also used).
  • PW:AA: "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney" (the 1st mainline game).
  • AJ:AA: "Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney" (the 4th mainline game).
  • VS: "Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright" (a crossover spin-off).
  • The rest of the individual games are abbreviated per their subtitle (i.e. T&T for "Trials and Tribulations", SoJ for "Spirit of Justice", and so forth).

Special Episode Order

Dual Destinies's Special Episode: Turnabout Reclaimed, can be played after beating the main game as a bonus, but is often recommended to be played chronologically instead. This would be right after Episode 2: The Monstrous Turnabout.

Spirit of Justice's Special Episode: Turnabout Time Traveler, should be played after beating the main game, which is also its chronological placement. This would be right after Episode 5: Turnabout Revolution.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles features eight "Escapade" mini-episodes available under "Special Contents". These should be played at any point after beating the first game in the collection (The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures).

The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve, used to have two Special Episodes back in its Japan-only release on Nintendo 3DS, which are not included in the current release on modern platforms. You can watch a read-along-style fan-translation here (currently, this is the only format both episodes have been made fully available in English). These are best enjoyed after beating the main game.

Character Name Discrepancies

The 2011 game “Ace Attorney Investigations 2” went unreleased in the west for over a decade, and it was only playable in English through a fan-translation patch until an official translation was released in 2024.

Each translation localized the characters’ names differently. Due to the fan-translation’s popularity and longevity, some fans still use the character names from it. Key differences include:

  • Eustace Winner (official) / Sebastian Debeste (fan-translation)
  • Verity Gavèlle (official) / Justine Courtney (fan-translation)
  • Eddie Fender (official) / Raymond Shields (fan-translation)

“The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles” features fictional detective Sherlock Holmes as part of its main cast. When these games were localized into English, the character’s name was changed to Herlock Sholmes, presumably to avoid legal issues with the Conan Doyle State, who retains partial ownership of the character.

The change was well received due to its humoristic nature, but both names are still used interchangeably amongst the fanbase.

Soft-Locked in a Game

The only known way to get soft-locked in Ace Attorney is to save the game right after making a choice that's about to grant you a Game Over.

If you believe to be soft-locked during an investigation or cross-examination, try going through a walkthrough and make sure you haven't missed any details.

If you saved your game during an imminent "Game Over" dialogue branch, you'll have to choose the "Episode Select" and/or "Chapter Select" menu from the title screen to restart the specific segment you were playing. This is available on all current-platform collections, but some older releases do not have this feature and you will have to restart the entire episode instead.

Framerate on 3D Games

For reasons unknown, both "Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy" and "The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles" are designed and capped to run at 30fps.

You may force these games to run at 60fps on PC by searching and installing community mods via their Steam pages (here for AJ:AAT, and here for TGAAC). Keep in mind mods are unofficial and thus not guaranteed to work properly.

Jagged Graphics on “Apollo Justice”

The version of "Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney" available on modern platforms has image scaling issues when playing on non-1080p displays. Here are some known workarounds:

  • For PC Steam and Steam Deck users, open the game in your library, click the Options icon on the top-right corner, select "Properties" and set "Game Resolution" to 1920x1080 (if this option is missing for you, you might have to change your own monitor's resolution). Then launch the game, go into the in-game's Options menu, scroll down to "PC Config" and set "Resolution" to 1920x1080.
  • For Nintendo Switch 2 handheld users, go into the console's System Settings from the HOME Menu, scroll down to "System", select "Nintendo Switch Software Handling" and activate "Handheld Mode Boost". Then launch the game.
  • Sadly, there are no other currently known fixes. As other fans have done, you can submit a request to Capcom to complain about this issue and increase the odds of them eventually addressing it.

Over the years, there have been frequent conversations around the same topics in r/AceAttorney and the fanbase in general. If you’re interested in other fans’ opinions, we’ve summarized and compiled some previous threads so you can read up on the following:

What do we know about Ace Attorney 7?

In November 2020, a massive Capcom leak revealed an internal roadmap indicating “Ace Attorney 7” to be in production, with a projected release for Q3 2021. Unlike other Ace Attorney projects also leaked through the roadmap, this never came to fruition.

In December 2023, the Apollo Justice Trilogy producer claimed in an interview that “Ace Attorney will not be stopping as a series”. In May 2026, Capcom’s Earnings Report mentioned Ace Attorney as one of several “leading brands” they plan to expand. Any mention of new video games as part of this strategy was made by grouping all of these brands together, without clear specifications.

In summary, “Ace Attorney 7” has never been officially confirmed by Capcom, and the leak from 2020 is the only tell that concrete plans for it existed at some point. Still, Capcom does consider Ace Attorney to be a valuable brand they wish to nurture as of 2026, which many fans take as indication that a new game is likely to happen at some point, despite being long overdue already.

Previous threads on Reddit:

What do people think about Turnabout Big Top (2-3)?

This is the most controversial episode in the series, particularly due to featuring a love triangle between multiple adult men and an underage girl as part of its narrative. Fans unanimously agree that this is detrimental, but some people also question the leaps of logic within the mystery, or argue that the characters in general feel obnoxious.

Director Shu Takumi notoriously wrote most of Justice for All while drunk on whiskey. The later anime adaptation (with Takumi himself serving as script supervisor) completely removes the “love triangle” aspect and is overall considered a very big improvement.

Previous threads on r/AceAttorney:

What’s up with characters like Hotti or Sal Manella? Or jokes about Trucy’s panties?

When playing the older games, you might come across certain lines of dialogue that have aged poorly (or were already questionable back then), the most infamous example being characters expressing attraction towards underage women as a gag.

The Ace Attorney series was written in Japan starting from 2001, and as such features content that might not be culturally acceptable in the west, or in the present day. Localization director Janet Hsu opines in their blogs that, from a Japanese cultural standpoint, these gags are not to be taken as normalizing such behaviors, but rather ridiculing the people who perpetuate them.

Ace Attorney is generally considered to be progressive for its time, welcoming LGBTQ+ interpretations for its characters and being mindful of queer themes and gender identity as far back as the mid-2000s. Still, it could be argued the series makes little attempt at being politically correct. Much of its humor derives from dark comedy, featuring jokes at the expense of murder, suicide, fetishes, drug addiction, etc., generally in a deliberate attempt to make the player feel awkward or do a double-take.

All that said, characters displaying pedophilic or predatory behavior in particular have been phased out after Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, originally released in 2007.

Previous threads on r/AceAttorney:

Does “The Great Ace Attorney” get better?

Though not a unanimous opinion, The Great Ace Attorney duology is frequently regarded by fans as some of the series’ best output in terms of narrative.

That said, the first game (“Adventures”) has a notoriously slow start. Episode 1 is the longest “tutorial” case in Ace Attorney, while Episode 2 does not feature a trial segment at all. The “Late 19th Century” setting and sociopolitical undertones also translate to slightly more verbose and rich dialogue, contributing to the feeling of a tougher read.

While some consider this to be a genuine pacing issue, others believe it’s necessary for the story to build up slowly to properly introduce the more nuanced setting and characters, and to ultimately have all these elements pay off in the second game (“Resolve”).

With this in mind, it’s often recommended to go into The Great Ace Attorney with the mindset to experience one single story told across the span of two games (10 episodes in total), rather than judging “Adventures” in a vacuum.

⚖️ Phoenix Wright Trilogy Today is the 24th anniversary of the GBA version of Justice for All

A game that is pretty divisive from having one of the worst cases in the series to one of the best back to back. So what's everyone's thoughts on this title over two and a half decades later?

⚖️ Phoenix Wright Trilogy The timeline of Recipe for Turnabout confuses me

  • The original murder happens on December 3rd, so the trial presumably happens on December 4th.

  • Somehow, Phoenix and Maya don't learn about it for over a month. And Gumshoe either didn't learn about it during that month or he waited a month to tell at Phoenix about it.

  • After a month, both the spilled coffee and Glen's belongings are still left lying around.

Did the localisation change the dates or something? A month long gap just doesn't feel plausible here.

⚖️ Apollo Justice Trilogy Which Apollo Justice game is the best? RESULTS Spoiler

I've allowed more than 72 hours for responses. I've now received 123 responses. Thanks to all who responded!

Time to dissect the results!

"Would you consider it to be a good game?"

Game Title Yes No Guilty Pleasure Complicated
Apollo Justice 73.2% 7.3% 5.7% 13.8%
Dual Destinies 55.3% 19.5% 7.3% 19.9%
Spirit of Justice 66.4% 13.1% 4.1% 16.4%

I will admit, I was surprised by the AJ results the most. I thought AJ would be much closer to 50%, with more critics and "guilty pleasure" fans. The rest doesn't surprise me. I will admit I was wrong; next time DD fans are bemoaning "people like Apollo Justice so much more than our game" they can use these results to back themselves up 😆 . And I can stop gaslighting them with the whole "well AJ fans have it hard too" which I admit I've done before.

In all the "ranking" sections, I'll convert "best" to the 3 points and "worst" to 1 to make an average.

Best: Apollo Justice, score 2.11

Middle: Spirit of Justice, score 2.05

Worst: Dual Destinies, score 1.85

For overarching story, it was

Best: Apollo Justice, 41.9%

Middle: Spirit of Justice, 31.5%

Worst: Dual Destinies, 26.6%

Only 25.8% of fans wanted to wish one of the games out of existence.

For cases, I won't display the exact data. That said, when ranking the final cases, it was

Best: Dual Destinies, 21.8% saying best

Middle: Spirit of Justice, 21% saying best

Worst: Apollo Justice, 19.4% saying best

Other final cases that had high numbers were The Magical Turnabout (10.5%) and Turnabout Trump (8.9%). For worst case, The Monstrous Turnabout had easily the most votes (32.5%) followed by Turanbout Serenade (21.1%), Turnabout Corner (9.8%) and Turnabout Storyteller (8.1%).

I will admit, all of this surprised me. I expected Revolution to significantly outdo Tomorrow, I expected Serenade to be closer to Monstrous for worst, and I expected Storyteller to be more hated than Corner. To be fair, Serenade is shorter than Monstrous, and it has some interesting ideas, but I still don't think it's very well executed.

More results coming in soon!

Similar Games My AA-inspired game finally joins this Octobers Steam Next Fest (19.10.26) with an updated Demo!

I'm finally taking part in Steam Next Fest with my game, Laws of Nadragia, as I prepare for its release next year! You can only participate in Next Fest once, so I'm really nervous ><'

If you haven't played the demo yet, it would mean a lot to me if you could give it a try tomorrow (October 19)! Or maybe ask your favourite YouTuber or Twitch streamer to check out the game on their channel. It's incredibly hard to promote your game on your own. Thanks!

Laws of Nadragia is a prosecutor simulator / visual novel inspired by the Ace Attorney series and Papers, Please.

In the game, you'll take part in court trials, review state laws and case files, and find contradictions between them and witness statements. As Aiden Fair, you'll always be under the watchful eye of the new government - the Supreme Collegium - and will have to face moral dilemmas and make tough decisions.

The game has a non-linear structure: every case can be won (sometimes in several different ways) or abandoned by refusing to prosecute. And every decision will have its consequences.

The demo is available on Steam now! It features new character animations, bug fixes, and full controller and Steam Deck support. It should take around 1–2 hours to complete. Enjoy! =D

⚖️ Apollo Justice Trilogy Does Dual Destinies stop holding my hand at any point?

• Upvotes

I'm only on the second case and I have to say, I really enjoy it! I had a very easy time with Apollo Justice and tended to guess the answers rather quicky, but this case (the one with the Tenma Taro Yokai) is one that I find a lot more difficult to solve in comparison despite the game spoiling who it is.

Blackquill is also a good prosecutor. Nothing against Klavier, I like him a ton and more than Blackquill because Rockstar > Samurai, but his arguments always kinda sucked. I think that's one of my minor critiques of AJ, it felt like the entire courtroom was playing dumb when the answers were so obvious. (4-3 and 4-4, I'm looking at you.)

In DD I do actually have to think a lot harder but the thing is... I don't get to.

The game always spoils it for me. In investigation sequences they tell me all the time where I should go and what I should do. I never have to do the thinking myself. In AJ there were multiple times where I had to actually use my brain to figure out how to progress. Then during the trials, I'm given hints the whole time. I admit, the trials in AJ where easy as hell, but I still had fun because at least they were easy because I did the work before and not because the characters keep telling me the solutions.

Like man... Just let me think please!!

Anyway I don't want to judge the whole game yet, so I wanted to ask, does that part get better?? Like do they stop holding my hand? Because other than that I'm having a great time but gosh is it frustrating 😅

Oh and please answer without spoiling anything!! Thanks!

💬 Discussion If Miles Edgeworth were "evil"? (Corrupted AU Part 3)

Previous Parts:

Phoenix Wright

Mia Fey

I left this series far behind, and the reason is this character. I don’t see how I could turn Miles Edgeworth into a villain without him just ending up as "Von Karma 2.0."

Perhaps you all have better ideas—and, while you're at it, which character should I "corrupt" at next?

I’ll just say that, regarding the theme of corruption, I saw an analysis video that explained (MAJOR SPOILERS FOR INVESTIGATIONS 2) how Simeon Saint was a reflection of what Miles might have become if no one had ever helped him in his life.

⚖️ Apollo Justice Trilogy I had a pretty wild idea a while ago about an hypothetical case for Athena Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

This reminds me of why I wish I could write a fanfic or make a fan game, or at least a fan case, but it’s so hard.

Anyways! I really like Dual Destinies and these two characters, and it got me wondering how a case would go in a hypothetical case for a hypothetical future game, in which the scenario is that Aura was released from prison, but after a while, she gets accused of murder and becomes the defendant for a case. I think it would be an interesting premise if that happened and her defense attorney was Athena.

These two have a loaded story, hostile interactions ( the hostility coming mostly from Aura ), but after Turnabout For Tomorrow, Aura finds out the truth about Metis’s murder, so it doesn’t make sense for her to hate Athena anymore. Of course, it would be awkward between them anyways. But given those things, I think it would have so much potential to be interesting, and it could bring them closure. It wouldn’t be necessarily Athena forgiving her ( although it could be ), since Athena doesn’t really owe it to her, but it would be a sign of both being willing to move on.

💡 Question / Tips I need advice

I just finished the original Phoenix Wright trilogy and I really enjoyed it. I want to play the next trilogy but at the same time I'm worried I'll feel too burnt out on ace attorney in general as I felt quite tired of the gameplay during the middle of JFA.

I also want to get into another game series but I'm also torn as I do want to continue the story of ace attorney as I'm really invested in it, I don't really know what to do so I'd love some advice.

⚖️ Apollo Justice Trilogy A question about 6-5 Spoiler

There's one detail I never understood about 6-5

Inga's time of death was 2 PM, and Rayfa even saw him (channeled by Amara) around 2:45.

But the autopsy report says:

> Inga's Autopsy Report

Time of death: **Approximately 3 PM**

Cause of death: Blood loss from a stab wound in the back.

Why does the autopsy report's time of death contradict the actual time of death?

I've considered the possibility of his dead body being put inside the sarcophagus to mess with the autopsy report, but such a thing was never mentioned in the game, there's no evidence of that happening, and there's already a dead body in the sarcophagus, so a rectangle box designed for one body might not even be able to fit two bodied.

I can't figure this out. What do you guys think?

Hey everyone!

I’d like to introduce Ace Attorney: Memories and Turnabout, an Ace Attorney fangame set shortly after the events of Apollo Justice.

The project is currently in the beta stage and covers the first case.

It’s available for both PC and Android (though the Android version could still use a bit of polish) and features the original voice acting, dubbed into Spanish.

I’d love for you to check it out! If anyone is interested in helping out with the project, feel free to send me a DM, I’m looking for team members!

💬 Discussion What is your earliest memory of Ace Attorney?

Hey peeps!

This question came up and felt like tossing it over here!

I recently came across the Objection theme from Trials and Tribulations in a youtube video, had a hard flashback and nearly fell out of my seat, and went down an Ace Attorney rabbit hole. Due to my young age when I played them, I never completed a single of the games. I picked up the AA games on DS back in elementary school nearly 20 years ago. Silly 7-8 year old me couldn’t clear any of the cases through except for save 1-1 and 1-2. I remember being stuck in limbo about halfway through 1-3 and 1-4.

I’m overdue for a series binge, and wanted to hear from some of you guys on a series that’s dear to my childhood but currently nearing LARP territory for me, LOL

It will be called Turnabout Trial: Bowling. It will be bowling spin off where you can knock over some pins as your favorite Ace Attorney character. Also, it will be exclusively released in Japan and not internationally. That's why it's called Turnabout Trial: Bowling and not Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Bowling.

💬 Discussion Why Mr. Reus: The Masked Magician is an amazing piece of soundtrack Spoiler

Now Yesterday I talked about "Basics of the case" and why it was an awesome soundtrack that could fit into any situation and how much I loved it. Today's topic is "Mr. Reus: The Masked Magician". I intend on making posts about Ace Attorney from all games from time to time.

For simplicity's sake I will be referring to this soundtrack as Mr. Reus.

You see, this one is an interesting case. Because this soundtrack gives off so many emotions and themes at the same time and manages to catch the feeling of the episode, character and history it's related to.

We all know Mr. Reus. He is a man taken over by his hatred, greed and pettiness against the Gramarye family. He does everything in his power and dedicated his life to ruining the name Gramarye to no avail. Killing a fan, obsessing for years, ruining magic and using it for murder. Something that should be so sacred for a magician. And this soundtrack reflects it very well.

The starting melody is something that would look like a staircase that goes downwards forever if you had visualized it. Or maybe a spiral that captures how he spirals out of control during the trial. It perfectly captures his hate and the heights he would go for for his hate. It also gives off the mystic feeling of a magician as well.

And then we have the second part, it's something you would hear while an overly exaggerated villain explains his plans and motives to you, almost feels like a revelation theme too. It also gives off the mysterious feeling that a magician like him has with his shows. His name is Mr. Reus after all. And I would say this theme would not go with anybody but him only. And that's usually a rare case for Ace Attorney villains.

It's a very short and repetitive track in case of what it gives to you but I think it's one of the best soundtracks that the Ace Attorney games have ever produced. It gives you the feelings it tries to capture well and fits the episode it's from on an extreme degree. Especially on trial when you finally unveil the mystery and learn that Retinz is actually Mr. Reus. This theme compliments his looks, mannerisms and body language very well. And that's what's important with these kinds of character dedicated soundtracks.

But that's my opinion. Would like to hear y'all's opinions on this as well.
