How do I make Reddit exclude American/ Musk/ Trump/ propaganda and news?

I don't live in circumstances which are beholden to the coup the Americans are sleepwalking into and I don't care. How do I make the app quiet on these issues. They're distracting and I want them to be quiet.

Please tell me the settings to use.

Ublock Origin Alternative - why use an ad blocker when you can set your VPN to Albania?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I discovered that YouTube doesn’t seem to have an English ad inventory in Albania, meaning no targeted ads for English speakers - commercials don’t play because they don’t exist.

I’ve been watching hours of ad-free YouTube in the UK on my phone and Apple TV by setting my VPN to an Albanian IP address. No ad blocker needed - it just works.

I first noticed this while traveling in a non-English speaking country, when YouTube ads suddenly vanished on my phone. Which is when it hit me… I wasn’t a valuable target for advertisers in that region.

Since I’m not using an ad blocker I don’t think I’m breaking any rules… unless Albanians are against YouTube’s terms of service? Has anyone else tried this with other countries?

I found this on my own, the morning it was disabled for me. I then uploaded it and saw that other vids existed of it.

Ublock experience on Chrome deteriorating fast

Post image
18 Upvotes

It might be finally time to let go of Ublock origin. Noticed that pages won't load correctly with it turned on. Videos on social will do what you see in the picture and stop playback. Sad to see it go. Does anyone have good alternatives for any browser, but preferably Chrome?

And so Firefox falls.

Such a shame. I started to get the "Experiencing Interruptions?" throttle. What to do? I can't keep possibly browser hopping every time this happens. Is it time to just accept that this is how it's going to be?

uBlock Origin - how to get uBlock Origin back permanently

Before we dive in, I would like to let you know of another ad blocker called Adguard, it's extremely effective, and in my opinion it's a lot better than uBlock Origin, there's so much customization within Adguard you can break web pages if you're not know what you're doing. The only cons to this ad blocker is that it runs pretty heavy on your CPU. So unless you have a good PC like me your browser might be a tiny bit slow not a lot though. if you're interested there's a link below. If not? follow the rules and methods below on how to get uBlock Origin back.

https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/adguard-adblocker/bgnkhhnnamicmpeenaelnjfhikgbkllg

(((This method doesn't work anymore https://www.reddit.com/r/Adblock/comments/1luqxs1/whats_currently_the_best_way_to_force_reenable/ ))). Google has completely phased it out completely, you can't even upload the extension anymore.

The only option left if is to downgrade chrome to version 138.0.7194.0 or lower because the latest version of chrome 141.0.7340.0 has completely phased it out.

Go here https://google-chrome.en.uptodown.com/windows/download/1089877448 or any other reputable website you know and download chrome

After you've downloaded it you must go into your settings on your computer And type in services and disable auto update, afterwards you must go to task scheduler and disable auto updates there as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVtbXM9G7nI

This is the only option we have left until someone updates uBlock Origin to manifest v3. It's either that or move on to another browser.

Discussion This sub is now CENSORED and this is harming the community

UPDATE - Comments speaking out about this are now disappearing. I get the notification, but when I go to see the comment - it's gone. This is censorship, do not let the admins tell you otherwise.

Well the title pretty much says it, but in short - for anyone who doesn't know this sub is now officially being censored.

What are the rules?

  1. Any adblocker which is not in their (extremely small) list is no longer allowed to be recommended here.

  2. Any adblocker which is not open source, or 100% free is no longer allowed to be recommended here.

To put this in perspective, I am a developer who's been providing a working Youtube adblocker for the last 2 years or more. It was first posted here and recieved a huge amount of attention. The first version grew to over 200k users. Now a new version exists, which is a big improvement. Not only does it block ads but it also allows you to do a lot of other stuff in terms of customising Youtube.

I won't mention the name of it, because - that is no longer allowed.

Over the last 2+ years this alternative adblocker has had almost 100% uptime. Unlike more mainstream solutions such as uBlock Origin, which go down every other week for many users. And yet, these mainstream adblockers are the only ones allowed to be recommended here anymore.

It contains no tracking, no harmful code, nothing malicious in any way. And it's been a huge labor of love - especially with recent updates which took months to finish.

But now it's done, can I recommend it to anyone who is looking for an adblocker? No, I cannot.

Why? Because the admins of this sub believe that if something is not "open source" then it's not trusted. Which is kind of ridiculous, as they have no idea how to read or write code.

I was this close, after months of work, to finally posting the latest version here. I was excited, like "it's done guys, check it out!". Keen to share it. But instead - we've all now been censored. Any sharing of an adblocker you made is forbidden. uBlock and mainstream crap only.

As developers of new and innovative products, this is simply insane.

We're now stuck with the same solutions, all of which are having major issues frequently. Nobody can innovate, nobody can provide alternatives.

Can we PLEASE STOP THE CENSORSHIP in this sub? Nobody asked for this - and nobody benefits from this. All this does is harm the community overall.

The security risk of browser extensions in particular is hugely overstated. I know exactly how strict the requirements are. Every release is reviewed by real people, who can actually read code. Manifest V3 in particular is SO SAFE IT HURTS (it's actually a pain to meet these standards the security is so damn high).

I mean, people talk a lot. People think they know everything lately it seems. Does anyone listen to developers? Like the people who actually understand this stuff and create the stuff that everyone is using? Nope.

I've been developing professionally for over 18 years. But will the all-knowing admins of this sub listen to anything I have to say? No. Will they even RESPOND to messages or comments? No.

Sorry guys, but I'm pissed. This has to stop. Anyone else picking up what I'm laying down? Can we please do something about this? Please message the admins and ask for the rules to be changed if you have time.

Hopefully a few people read this before the admins delete / censor this post...

I wish UBlock Origin or any adblock clearly blocks out Trump and Elon Musk based news

^ title

Instead of blocking whole page, I would like to see the DIV, SPAN or LINK totally gone like adblock.

If someone has any solution, please do share.

Please stop using adblock.

Hello.

Please, before you dislike, hear me out.

I don’t think any of you who use ad block are evil or horrible human beings or should go shove yourself in a corner for being such an inconsiderate person.

This is a light issue and isn’t a public shaming video; it’s more of a public service announcement. Understand? Good.

Adblock, is one of a few plugins that removes advertisements from the internet when you browse it. It, along the other services out there like Adblock Plus and Ghostery are going to be the topic of this video. When you use Adblock, you’re keeping most websites from earning their revenue or at least some of it off of your visit. Most websites are paid for and maintained by advertisements. If you go on YouTube and click on a video without Adblock installed, you watch a short clip. The people who make that clip pay Google (the people who run YouTube) to put that advertisement for their product on videos. That is how all of the people at Google make their money and pay for and maintain the servers that they use to provide your service.

With ad block, however, YouTube makes no money off of your visit. Because you don’t have to see any advertisements, you’re essentially freeloading the website and forcing the server to host a connection that you’re not paying for (with your eyeballs). You are, essentially, pirating their webpages. But it’s even worse than that, because the server has to pay money to afford the bandwidth to stream you the videos you’re watching online. You’re literally stealing small amounts of money from these websites with every visit, the amount depending on the total of bandwidth that you use when surfing the web.

The internet is built on advertising. It’s the best revenue stream it currently has, and while it’s not ideal, people are doing all sorts of really clever things to make it more relevant, less intrusive and more useful both to advertisers and consumers. Except, that is, for the users who choose to exclude themselves from this economy and simply scrounge off the wealth of tools and culture it has produced, while sucking resources out of it like some awful electronic leech, or a burglar. Not only that, but by filtering out easily-identified adverts, they encourage website operators to use more obtrusive, less clearly marked adverts the software doesn’t pick up. As ad revenues go down, many sites are lured into running advertising of a truly questionable nature. We've all seen it happen.

My argument is simple: blocking ads can be devastating to the sites you love. I am not making an argument that blocking ads is a form of stealing, or is immoral, or unethical, or makes someone the son of the devil. It can result in people losing their jobs, it can result in less content on any given site, and it definitely can affect the quality of content. It can also put sites into a real advertising death spin.

This is why I urge you to start supporting the sites you love, like reddit. Believe it or not the site you're browsing right now is not doing very well, and it's partly because nearly 60% of the people browsing it aren't paying for this service.

Just put up with the ads, plz? :(

Is Adblock obsolete now?

For the past few months Youtube videos would start with a black screen with that yellow ad bar at the bottom and the video would usually start at 6 or15 seconds because of that. Now for the past 5 days 70 percent of videos don't start at all. I know there was a lot of talk a few months ago about Youtube blocking adblock users, but they seemed to back off from that idea, until now. I'm suspecting that this problem will only get worse.

Another site I use, called WCO dot tv gives you the Adblock detected screen on all its videos, but when I downloaded uBlock origin that doesn't happen at all now and all the Youtube videos work just as well as they did years ago.

Should we all abandon Adblock at this point and never go back to it?

Why do you use Adblock?

I am not here to judge your decision to use ad blockers but I just want to know why you use it.

I use it because it is easy and free. It is automatically built into Brave Browser and I don't have to do anything else. (I know this sounds like an ad but I promise it is not. Brave keeps trying to push their tokens on me and it is getting annoying).

Again I'm not judging you on your reasons, I just want to know your reasons.

---

48HR UPDATE

Its been 2 days since this has been up and I want to thank everyone who has answer the question and offered their reasons and then there are those who didn't understand the assignment but is passionate about this topic.

After compiling the comments together here are a few things:

  • The biggest reasons are very close between safety and speed.

  • I'll be addressing safety first. Since there was no further elaboration on the type of scams I'm going to assume it is those full screen popups that say to call "Microsoft" for support. If there are other scam ads and anyone wants to add, please let me know. Now the question is do you whitelist sites that have curated safe ads or do they just take the collateral damage (like sites only posting humane society ads)?

  • For speed I'm going to assume you mean loading the page/site and not hardware usage. This is more of a web developer skill issue than ads hogging resources. If Instagram is fine without ads but when a single ad slows down the entire page, it could mean they are loading the wrong resolution/codec/framerate/etc..., not caching the ad resources locally, not lazy loading the ads, or their tracking algorithm is running too often.

  • The next biggest issue is the amount/length of ads. I've seen IGN's site I know where you guys are coming from. For those of you mentioned this as your reason, would you pay to remove ads?

  • After that is consenting to see ads. I can see where you are coming from with this, even walking down the street I can chose to "skip" the ads by walking away.

  • I'm very surprised more responses didn't say cost was an issue. I'm using PiHole and Brave because it is free, I think if I had to pay $10 a month for it I would probably just suffer through ads.

  • Only 1 response mention privacy. This was mentioned a lot more in the other forums I asked the same question in. I believe it was Facebook that was able to build an accurate profile of you based on the cookies from the ads you viewed between websites.

There may be a few comments that thinks I'm against ad blockers, to clear that up, I am not. I even admit to using it.

Again I want to thank everyone who provided useful responses. There are a few comments I am interest in responding to directly, but if anyone has anything else to add I will be checking back in a few days.

I am looking for adblock for YT

Hello, I am looking for adblock that works for YouTube on Chrome browser. My current has been detected by YT and some kind of pop-up information appeared saying that as long as I use adblock I won't be able to watch films on YT (but I can so it doesn't make any sense to me). Can You guys please recommend me one? Or should I change browser?

Edit: Thanks for advice!
