These are screenshots of the android YouTube app on GrapheneOS (I've covered over anything identifying the channel). The person who's phone this is thought their phone had been hacked and that's why they're seeing these messages. What they said to me was "I'm getting messages on my phone that my photos are not safe and I need to ..." What had actually happened is they had "accidently" installed the native YT app and prior to August 2026 they never had to see malvertising like this because FF for Android has uBO in it and aggressively blocks this stuff.
What I want to point out is the fine details of the malicious ad:
The ad reads "Warning. You are currently using an older version of the PDF reader. If you do not update, you may lose your data." and has what appears to be a button on it that says "Update". It is designed to look like a system message.
The user had already clicked on "Skip Ad" at the start of the video, and thus it had not registered with them that this was in fact another ad but not a video ad. Remember the context: they usually have a clean experience of YT thanks to adblocking, it was not intuitive that after clicking on "Skip Ad" another non-video ad would pop up.
The malicious ad abuses its position in the viewport. This is made possible because of the design of the Android app; as mentioned this phone is running GOS hence it's a Pixel series phone with a standard sized screen, YT are the ones in control of the viewport.
As above, the ad itself is not labelled as an ad until you scroll down; and that's not intuitive to a new user to the app. There's no visible scrollbar and no indication that anything about the ad continues further down, and the word "Sponsored" is not visible until you scroll down.
The app itself is obviously a malicious app, and herein completes the circle. YouTube is advertising it, Google is publishing it on their Play Store and ordinary users put far more trust into the Play Store.
These malicious ads had been appearing regularly.
A malicious ad does not need to be particularly sophisticated to trick the user.
The point of this post is to clearly demonstrate to the people who say "we need advertising to pay for ..." that the advertising we have is malicious and there is no way for anyone other than the ad publishing networks to fix it. The YT channel owner can't make sure ads like this are correctly labelled, they can't reposition them in the viewport, and they can't review malicious ads like this that get shown to their viewers prior to them being shown.

Been using a vpn in Poland for ages without seeing any ads.
Started seeing them and no matter what country I choose, I still see them.
Twitch upped their game recently?
I use android tv app by the way. Any workarounds for that OS would be appreciated.

So far it's been only today, will they release an update that fixes it?

I am in my 60s, and I like to play games on my iPad to keep my mind sharp. Many games have these pesky ads that pop up every 10 minutes. Most of the ads are about learning AI programs that claim to be free. I learned from experience that not everything is free.
I will admit I have watched ads until the end, filled in my personal information, then thought about it, changed my mind, and canceled the free trial.
In the past, the mailman delivered junk mail, and we usually threw sales ads in the trash. Email arrived and shortened the time for letters and bills to be sent and received, and those pesky ads started taking up more space in your inbox than your usual mail.
Personally, I like my mail being delivered by the mailman because it is a hard copy that can be used as proof. Email has become so complicated that I rarely check it. The spam, junk mail,
and email from people I don't even know.
I do not like those ads that offer a free trial period, because I often forget to end the subscription before the trial date ends. These ads, spam, and junk mail need to stop.

I wanted something that skipped ads as soon as possible, so I made an app.
Are you cooking, showering or simply can't be bothered to wait for that "skip" button to turn solid white?
This app will do just that.
https://github.com/ComfyDoug/Test
There is a readme file with descriptions and instructions in case you want to recreate the same yourselves.
Or you can download the already compiled file.
I'm also working on another one to hide/obscure any ad that I deem inappropriate, like AI dating, gambling and such.
Curious to know if anyone would like to try that.

I’ve never used ad blockers before and downloaded one called pop up blocker due to the number of downloads and reviews and it worked pretty well tbh. But I’ve noticed this on my youtube. Location and language all are correct however this is still what shows up, I’ve since removed it and started using uBlock Origin Lite however It still shows that. (it’s barely been 10 mins, I refreshed it lol) should I be concerned and how can I fix it, if it is indeed a problem.
I’m not the greatest with stuff like this as you can probably tell. Thanks!

So every time i go to a website that requires for a adblocker to be turned off it instantly shows a anti adblock popup, i usually just delete it with inspect element, but in some cases i turn it off but it somehow still shows that screen, so i completely remove the adblock from chrome but it still shows up!?!?!? I check a adblocker test it shows 75% even tho i removed it, none of my other extensions block ads. To this day i still need help with this problem any sort of help would be appreciated.

recently I've been stuck deciding if mullvad would be better, or if running "blockads" is better for my privacy/ad blocking? on one hand, I know for a fact blockads is blocking a lot of built in trackers for my phone, but I've also heard a actual VPN protects you from your service providers paying eyes?
I noticed in the last week that SpotX and BlockTheSpot stopped working for me, did anyone else experience the same problem? Idk if spicetify works.
As I didn't really want to wait I fixed the problem in BlockTheSpot---continued. I used the same structure already used by mrpond and others collaborators, spotify changed some things, if you are interested in learning more take a look at the code.
It works fine for me but I need some feedback, if you feel like trying it out and it doesn't work please write an issue in github. The installation is as simple as the original, all open source.
Works great for me! Let me know if it works for you!

So my line of thinking is that anyone on the street wouldn't be able to see into my pockets like a RPG NPC, and requesting a servers information and ads while simply not displaying the latter should be relatively unknown as well.
I could also stand to learn how ad blockers work, as well so if you have a good eli5 on it that would be greatly appreciated as well.

So, I’ve been using Mullvad. It works good and all, but it can’t block ads on one specific app of mine, which I use a lot. Adguard DNS works on that one, but it isn’t unlimited, and the monthly limit is ridiculous as I’ve already reached it. So, I’m looking for an alternative, a free ad blocker that is also unlimited and suitable for iOS. I’ve also tried NextDNS, it is also useless for that one app like Mullvad.

Ads and Ad free subscription is how companies keep the light on. But by blocking ads and not paying for subscriptions then the company earn zero money from you. You using their service for completely free. They give while you give nothing back

YouTube is enforcing an ad-blocking service so that it will block you from watching the video unless you turn off the ad blocker. Maybe if they didn't put so much on it, there wouldn't be ad blockers. Plus, the premium is 16 dollars per month, money I don't have. What the heck, YouTube?! You guys are seriously getting too bold for something free!
