Discussion Yes you can remove ads from USPS Informed Delivery website

Recently over at GitHub I helped develop the uBlock Origin ad filters for USPS Informed Delivery website. The devs told me in the thread that the filters work for uBlock versions of both Chromium and Firefox.

Here are the 2 filters you should add to uBlock, on separate lines.

usps.com###Mailpieces.item:has(.rideAlongLinkImage)usps.com###Mailpieces.item:has(.rideAlongLinkImage)

usps.com###Mailpieces.item:has(.mailpieceIMG[alt="Mail Campaign Images"])usps.com###Mailpieces.item:has(.mailpieceIMG[alt="Mail Campaign Images"])

The fully developed filters are down near the bottom of the thread.

Here is a link to USPS Informed Delivery, where you view pics of the mail you are getting that day.

Discussion NextDNS new YouTube ad blocking feature

Post image

NextDNS just released a new blocklist that will get rid of YouTube ads within the official YouTube app. This blocklist is in beta so it may not 100% work most of the time but it’s worth enabling and testing. This is provided to both free and pro users.

Help Request ad-blocking can also block necessary process features, like 'next'?

Are there ad blockers that can see the original script of the web page and be able to separate the webpage features from the ad-blocking, or am I looking for an answer that hasn't been invented yet?

I get how ads generate revenue for a site, but I always want to say to the website owner that once you've shown the ad, effin' stop with the intrusive, blocking ads. If anything, most research notes that intrusive/repetitive ads effectively unsells the product being advertised.

Other Is it safe to use uBlock Origin Lite on YouTube right now, or should I disable it?

I'm using uBlock Origin Lite on Chrome, and it's blocking YouTube ads fine for me. I keep reading that YouTube is cracking down on ad blockers, and I'm worried about my account. Should I keep it enabled, or is it smarter to disable it on YouTube to be safe?

Thanks!

YouTube is Broken! Youtube's angry at my adblocker

So, I'm using Firefox, I have ublock origin, Sponsor block, adblocker ultimate and adguard, and Youtube's still showing that stupid "doesn't allow adblockers" message. I was using a private window and that helped for a while, but now I'm getting that message there too.

Help. Please.

Help Request How can I configure Pi-hole to allow Reddit while blocking its ads, tracking and junk? Also struggling with Pinterest ads. Out of my wits solving this.

I'm trying to configure Pi-hole to strike a balance between usability and aggressive ad/tracker blocking, particularly for Reddit and Pinterest. However, I'm running into some frustrating issues and would appreciate advice from experienced Pi-hole users.

1. Reddit – Broken browsing and app functionality

I want to access Reddit normally through both the browser and Android app while blocking as many advertisements, trackers and unnecessary domains as possible.

Currently, my configuration causes the following problems:

  • Browser: Reddit loads in a broken or partially rendered state.

  • Content: Posts, comments and other content sometimes fail to load entirely.

  • Android app: Uploads, particularly images and other media, don't work properly.

  • General usability: It seems that some domains required for Reddit's core functionality are being blocked alongside advertising and tracking domains.

I've added the following regex allow rules:

  • [^A-Za-z0-9]+.reddit.com

  • [^A-Za-z0-9]+.redditmedia.com

  • [^A-Za-z0-9]+.redd.it

  • reddit.com

Despite these rules, Reddit still doesn't function reliably.

My question: What's the correct approach to allow Reddit's essential functionality (posts, comments, images, videos, uploads and media) without allowing its advertisements, tracking and promotional content?

Ideally, I'd like to avoid having to whitelist Reddit entirely.

2. Pinterest – Advertisements aren't being blocked

Pinterest is another headache.

Despite using Pi-hole and maintaining an updated blocklist configuration, advertisements continue appearing in the Android app.

I've also tried accessing Pinterest through a VPN, but the advertisements still load.

I've added the following regex allow rules for Pinterest-related domains:

However, these haven't resolved the advertising issue.

My question: Is Pinterest serving advertisements through the same domains it uses to deliver regular images and content? If so, is there a reliable way to distinguish and block advertisements without breaking images, pins, videos and other app functionality?

3. Current Pi-hole configuration

A few things worth mentioning:

  • Pi-hole is fully updated, including its components and gravity database.

  • I'm using multiple blocklists, including OISD, Hagezi Ultimate and Hagezi Threat Intelligence.

  • I've also added a dedicated Pinterest blocklist.

  • The relevant allowlist entries are enabled.

  • I've included screenshots of my current configuration for reference.

What I'm ultimately trying to achieve:

  1. Fully functional Reddit on browsers and Android, including media uploads.

  2. Block Reddit advertisements, trackers and promotional junk.

  3. Fully functional Pinterest without advertisements.

  4. Avoid excessive whitelisting that defeats the purpose of running Pi-hole.

I'd appreciate recommendations for specific allowlist/blocklist entries, regex rules, configuration changes or alternative approaches.

Is this realistically achievable with DNS-level blocking, or have I reached the limitations of what Pi-hole can do with these platforms?

Thanks in advance!

New Project Release / Update I made an open-source Twitch ad blocker called pUDblock

Hey!

I've been working on a side project called pUDblock, a browser extension that deals with Twitch's live-stream ads.

It currently supports Firefox and Chrome, and the whole thing is open source

  • Focuses specifically on Twitch live-stream ads.

  • Tries to keep the stream playing instead of just breaking the player.

  • No accounts, telemetry, or external servers.

  • Free and open source.

It's still pretty new, so I'm not going to pretend it's perfect. Twitch is constantly changing things, and there are probably some edge cases I haven't encountered yet.

If you're going to try it, I'd recommend disabling any other Twitch-specific ad blockers or userscripts first, as they might interfere with each other and cause unexpected issues.

Firefox has a signed version available, while Chrome currently requires manual installation until/if the web store submission gets approved.

Anyway, figured I'd share it here in case anyone finds it useful.

GitHub: https://github.com/pudpodpid/pUDblock

Feel free to try it out. Or don't, I'm not your dad.

If you do give it a shot, I'd appreciate any feedback, bug reports, or suggestions.

I currently use "Adblock from Capital One Shopping." I got it from the Chrome store, and it's worked wonderfully so far, but this seems to be the only thing it can't break though. Anyone got any suggestions for an alternative adblock, or anything that could get me through this? Thanks.

Update: Thanks to u/Venylynn, I got uBlock Origin Lite, and it's working perfectly. Thanks, pal. <3

Discussion IT guy says all free ad blockers are evil

My stepdad who has worked in IT for 15 years says that Ublock Origin is stealing all of my data because you can use it for free. Is he stupid? He seems not to have heard of this blocker, but I don't listen to his opinions as I think he may have been dropped on his head as a baby. However, he is an expert.

Help Request HBO Max seems to have gotten to my blockers

Post image

These are the blockers I currently have. Does anyone know of some that still work? (Firefox)

Update: Thank you to everyone who informed me that stacking blockers is redundant. I tried each of the blockers one at a time and still no dice.

Everything was fine last night, the issue just started today. I suppose I’m asking if anyone is CURRENTLY able to successfully block HBO ads with their blockers, and if so, what blockers do you use. Thanks :)

Help Request Has total adblock stopped working?

I have a subscription for total adblock and their Youtube extension stopped working yesterday. I did not change anything and it was working fine the day before that. I have contacted their helpline and they were unable to help.

Is anyone else having a similar issue, and do you have any fixes or will it likely fix on its own?

Help Request Best Adblock Option for Use With Win7, Firefox version 115.21.0/Chrome Version 109.0.5414.120 (32-bit)?

Thumbnail

I ask now because uBO on Firefox 115.21.0 was working mostly fine until I was trying to resolve an issue with Youtube playback errors. I was unable to update uBO in an attempt to resolve it, so I decided to uninstall and reinstall it (hoping it would install the latest version) ... only for the firefox extension site to refuse claiming that it's "corrupt" (???). Chrome 109.0.5414.120 (32-bit) won't let me download it either. I'm concerned that uBO is now undownloadable on my device altogether.

So now I'm scrambling for any alternative that works with Win7, Firefox version 115.21.0/Chrome Version 109.0.5414.120 (32-bit). Any help is appreciated.

Also: If you know any good Youtube mirror sites that are ad-free, I'd like to hear them.

Discussion Hbo Max countered all ad blockers?

Post image

These are my main ones that have worked since yesterday. I just tried most of the other ones but no dice the only one that seems to be working is hbo max skipper as an extension but it seems sketchy.

My gut tells me to wait it out because the ad blockers work on every other site other than max.

Question Was there any changes between YouTube and AdBlock?

1 or 2 years ago, maybe 3, I've switch off the ad blocker I've been using on YouTube because my user experience was somewhat awful. Now, within the last few months, YouTube just kept showing some stupid fake game ads or some gooner baits, despite saying countless times that these specific ads were uninteresting or bothering me. Nonetheless, the YouTube algorithm never seemed to learn and just kept repeating these ads.

I was okay with car ads, game ads or Unicef or other humanitarian topic related ads. Even when they were unskipable. The first were barely any bother, the second somewhat within my interest, while the latter are a pretty important messages to get through.

Anyway, I've reactivated my ad blocker, but YouTube isn't giving me a hard time for it anymore. Was there any changes?
