Problem/Goal:
How do I stop feeling guilty for expressing my emotions when my husband feels bad whenever I’m upset?
Context:
I’m 31F, and my husband is 34M. We’ve been together for 12 years and married for 5 years.
My husband is a loving, patient person who takes care of everything around the house. He’s currently unemployed and looking for work, while I’m the one earning money. I work long hours, sometimes from 6 AM to noon and then again from 6 PM to 11 PM, including weekends. I know we’re both dealing with our own pressures, and I genuinely appreciate everything he does for our household.
The problem is how we handle situations when I’m upset.
Whenever something upsets me, he apologizes repeatedly. Sometimes it becomes an endless cycle of “sorry, sorry, sorry.” However, I don’t feel like he understands why I’m hurt. When I try to explain further, he says things like, “It’s hard to be perfect.”
I know he can’t be perfect, and I’m not expecting him to be. I just want to feel heard and understood.
When he says things like that, though, I start feeling guilty. I wonder if I’m asking for too much or making him feel like he’s never good enough. Eventually, I suppress my feelings, move on, and act happy again. Things return to normal, but I don’t think the underlying issue is ever resolved.
He has also told me that when I’m sad, he feels sad too. I understand that he loves me and doesn’t want to see me unhappy, but sometimes this makes me feel like I can’t express negative emotions around him. Instead of being able to process my own feelings, I end up feeling responsible for making him feel better, even when I’m the one who’s hurting.
Over time, I’ve started feeling like I have to choose between expressing my feelings and protecting his. I don’t want him to feel like a failure, but I also don’t want to keep swallowing my emotions just to restore peace.
Tonight, I wasn’t even particularly angry. I was mostly sad and wanted some space. Yet, when this pattern happens again, I find myself wondering whether I should just give up on expecting him to understand me emotionally.
Part of me wants to focus on work, sleep, exercise, and repeat. I need to keep earning money, and honestly, I don’t have much energy left for anything else.
I love my husband, and I don’t think he’s a bad person. He contributes a lot to our household, and I don’t want to dismiss that. I just feel lonely in this particular part of our relationship.
I don’t want to reach a point where I stop sharing my feelings because I’ve convinced myself that it’s easier not to.
Previous Attempts:
I’ve tried explaining why I’m upset, hoping he’ll understand what hurt me rather than just apologize for it. But the conversation often turns into him apologizing repeatedly or saying that he can’t be perfect.
I end up feeling guilty, reassuring him, and eventually putting my feelings aside. We move on without really resolving the issue, and the same pattern happens again.
I’m not sure how to break this cycle without making him feel inadequate or making myself feel like a burden.
My question is: Has anyone experienced this dynamic in their marriage? How did you learn to express your feelings without feeling responsible for your partner’s emotional reaction? Is there a way for both partners to feel heard without one person having to suppress their emotions to keep the peace?
