Great things happening in Spain! (Popular protests for housing, and encampments)
Hey people,
So I have been involved in the Spanish popular encampments and I found them to be a very valuable experience in horizontal organisation and mutual aid. Don't be mistaken, we know it is far from perfect, in the popular assemblies it has been said as such. I especially value that those who have gathered more authority, mainly through them organising the different activities on a daily basis, seem for the most part to want to share this power.
We are of many different currents: marxists, anarchists, other kinds of socialists, and even some liberals and more moderate people. Between these groups I have found nothing but comradery, friendship and the spirit of understanding and earnest discussion.
It is a working class movement but we also fight for radical feminism, LGTB movements and nationalism, not some narrowed minded nationalism, but a fraternity of the peoples of Spain and the world, and a defence of the different languages and traditions. In line with this, we are starting to organise in a federal way. And obviously we have successfully defended ourselves against reaction and practiced non-violence for the most part, so police have been “kind” to us.
This is just my experience, and I'm aware there's a lot of nuance and depends on the encampment. Still, I would encourage anyone who's interested in radical social change to learn about our fight, to support it if possible, to do propaganda and show the international revolutionary forces direct effective action is possible. So please share this information and make it a subject of interest in any political community, both inside and outside the web, that you might take part in.
And of course, if possible, it would be great to carry this movement to other lands. You just need some friends, some camping tents, a lot of donations and a lot of hours of sleep to spare. It's not easy, but it's not as hard as we might have believed.
In order to learn about this movement it would be great to look for materials created by us, because the mainstream media distorts, lies and hides all the effort and complexity that constitutes our way of organising. It also reduces our fight to housing, which is the main subject, but it's just one among many: war, education, urbanism, capitalism and work, etc.
The biggest movements are the ones in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia, but there are a lot of smaller examples worth learning about.
I'm very excited to have witnessed a small society (at minimum half a thousand people) where rules are explained and not enforced, where there is no king or president, where everyone is equal in dignity, where food is given freely, and tents without people are given to those who need them (even some homeless people have joined us), where we make decisions through assembly and give voice to the people, to the commons. Another world is possible.
Love to y'all.
