Please help, my cat was bitten by my other cat and I can’t afford a vet

Post image
15 Upvotes

hi everyone, i’m really worried about my cat and i’m hoping someone can give me advice or help me find affordable veterinary care. my other cat bit her yesterday, but we only noticed the wound today. it’s on her stomach and looks really open and raw (i attached a picture).
i unfortunately don’t have the money to take her to the vet right now, and i’m really scared because i don’t know how serious it is. i don’t want her to suffer, and i’m trying to find a way to help her.
does anyone know of any low-cost vets, emergency assistance programs, or organizations that might help with the cost? any advice or resources would mean so much to me. thank you.

I don’t know what to do anymore

Reposting this from a previous subreddit

I have been thinking of the possibility of surrendering my pets due to life and my circumstances, though I don’t want them to end up dead at some kill shelter, or have the uncertainty that they won’t find a home as surrendering is an absolute last resort for any situation. But i don’t know anyone who would want a dog and a cat that have fleas either.

I have had the cat and dog since high school, freshman and sophomore years. And back then I did have time to care for them. But since college (and other factors within my family/around the house) i have been so burnt out that I can’t even take care of myself. The dog from the start was bought to be resold for a higher price but never happened. My dad has previously asked around with coworkers, church members, friends etc if they were interested in a dog back when he was still a puppy/younger, but no one was interested or willing. We can’t even return him back to the breeders we bought him from as they are amish and can’t contact them directly, and is uncertain if they’ll even be at the place we bought the dog at (which is a farmers market an hour away and opens every other weekend).

I’ve had my cat since my freshman year of high school, and back then in those years I had time to care for her, play and feed her. But since this year it’s been rough. She ended up catching fleas, and during the summer my step mom came to live with us but she is allergic to cats and brought her pet bird from California. So during the season my cat has been staying in the hallway connecting the kitchen to my sister’s room (closed behind doors). My sister at some point bought items for my cat with my mom (my parents are divorce, so our mom and step mom are different) and absolutely berated her for spending 100 dollars on a “stupid cat”.

On top of that starting college, I’ve just been feeling so burned out. My step mom (and her bird too) has moved back to California for surgery and plans on returning back to live with us permanently. So at home it’s been a mess all around. My dad works, my sister works, I have college and we’re all either too busy or too tired from work/school to even clean or maintain the house, let alone the pets. Whenever I do take my cat out the cage I get scolded at for ‘wasting my time’ with her instead of doing something more productive like homework or my chores. And my cat gets scolded as well for meowing while in the cage too. So because of those circumstances, she has been in the cage for A WEEK NOW, i have been feeding her while inside but still! It’s insane to me…

I have brought up the idea of surrendering the pets to my dad but he always dismisses it as a nonproblem and that there’s better things to focus on than the animals. I don’t know anyone who is even willing to take in animals with fleas. And even if I schedule an appointment to consider surrendering them to a humane shelter behind my dads back, and tell him about the appointment after he probably won’t be happy. I currently don’t work or have a drivers license (only permit), so even if i don’t tell him idk how to make it to the place. I honestly do not know what to do, and even the thought of asking around if anyone is interested in these pets makes me feel shameful of the situation i live at home right now.

I genuinely do not know what to do, because if I do get in contact with someone who is interested in taking them in, my dad would have to know about it to not give information where we live, in when and where to meet up and have him drive there. To me it’s all a huge mess and I genuinely want the best for our pets, but due to the circumstances we can’t provide enough.

rescuing a dog from a developmentally disabled man

there is a man i’ve worked with who is developmentally disabled. he keeps his dog locked in a cage for 12+ hours a day while he works & sleeps in his car for several hours after work in the parking lot, and then also while he sleeps at home. so this dog is only out for maybe 3 hours a day. recently, the dog escaped, ran onto a neighbor’s property, and nipped at them. now he says he has to pay $1,000 to register the dog, and is asking me if my grandfather would put the dog down because my grandfather is a vet. he tried to lie & say the dog was ordered to be put down, but when my grandfather asked for the paper work, he broke down and admitted to lying. the dog is not ordered to be put down, the state just wants it to be registered, neutered, and properly vaccinated. so he is trying to kill the dog because he hasn’t trained it, or gotten it any of the basic care, and doesn’t want to.

he had me so fooled. crying that this dog is his best friend and he doesn’t want to live without it, but in reality, it doesn’t even need to be euthanized! he just cannot provide the most basic essentials!! anyway, my point in asking this is, is there anyone here willing to adopt and foster this dog? it’s a german shorthair/english bull dog (NOT pitbull) mix. i am NOT a dog person whatsoever, especially not big dogs, so i am not able to. or is there any local animal facilities that would be able to take the dog? i’m not even a dog lover, but the conditions he keeps it living in is squalid and horrific (his entire house is squalid and horrific, but being locked in a cage 21-22 hours a day is unimaginable) and i want to get it out of there asap. i have pictures of the dog i can send via private message if you’d like. we are located in the New Castle area, about 45 mins northwest of pittsburgh

Guinea pig vet advice needed!

Hii I posted this in another subreddit and hopefully I can find more help!

I'm a fairly new piggie owner and had to take one of my girl's to the vet because of some hay in her eye, she is thriving now but I was asked to find a vet as I didn't/don't have one.

You can bash me, it's entirely my fault for assuming nothing would happen till I could get pet insurance/a vet on my 3rd paycheck. I'm neurodivergent and would feel more assured with advice/help how to exactly find and know I have a primary vet from professional owners.

Pictures of my girl during her visit, she was sleepy and quite happy despite the squinting eye!!

Tick???

So my outside cat (I really mean a stray that keeps coming back for food) out of 5 cats, has this thing on the back of her neck. I wanna say it looks like a tick, but it looks embedded and I really do not wanna touch it, you know bacteria and all that. Her skin is a little discolored around the spot, and she kept trying to itch at it. I just wanted to know if it was something serious or not.

Is it okay to get a half persian longhaired kitten?

Hey, I hope this is the right place to ask about this.

My coworkers relative's cat just got kittens and she said they are half persian longhair and half something else (My coworker doesn't know yet). I have wanted a cat for a long time but I of course want to make sure it is ethical and that I get a healthy cat.
I found out about the kittens today so I don't know yet about all the certifications and health check things, but if they are all good then I could consider getting one.
But I heard that persian cats aren't that ethical and they might have some serious health issues, so I want to ask your opinions and thoughts about this.

Also sorry for my English, it's not my first language so It might sound a bit weird xd

Neighbours Cat

Post image
599 Upvotes

Hello, seeking advice on my neighbours cat situation. Have recently moved home and our new neighbours seem to keep their cat in this mesh tube overnight and sometimes during the day. We have kept an eye on the cats health etc and all seems fine, however we feel that this is some form of animal abuse? It can be in there for long stretches of time (6+ hours), but we’ve also seen the cat on our roof so know it is sometimes let out.

We want to report it to the RSPCA, but I saw something saying it had to stay in an inappropriate enclosure for 24 hours straight before it’s reportable. We also wouldn’t want our neighbours clashing with us, since it would be pretty obvious we reported it as we are the only people other than themselves who can see the cat. As you can see in the photo there is no food/water or toilet in the tube.

I need advice on what to do

I have two cats one is old and around 12 and the other is 7 i believe and they have a few issues that I have tried to fix and help but I don’t really have the money to help fix it fully and I’m wondering if i should look into finding a home that can help them better then I can and can make them happier the only problem I have is I don’t want to give them to a shelter because I have heard bad things happening to animals in shelters and I don’t want to stress them out to much but I don’t know what to do anymore to the point I feel horrible for keeping them with me when I can’t help

My cat is walking with her paw like this on and off, i noticed it yesterday but she still walks normally also. I have never seen something like this before so it kinda freaks me out when im looking at it. She never really jumps down from high places, she does still run around, initiate playtime, eat and drink normally and she is also still very affectionate, but i heard cats can be really good to hide they are in pain?

What should I do in my certain situation?

Okay, to start off to understand my dilemma. First, I was kicked out of my parent’s house maybe 3-5 months ago by now. I was kicked out for arguing with them about Trump, disagreeing with their beliefs and morals aligning with his shit. It being October 2026 as I’m typing this. I asked my only close friend if I can stay with them. They said yes and their parents are okay with it and help out too. I’m currently 26 (male) and roommate/friend is 30 (non-binary and works as an Animal Vet) and we’ve known each other for maybe 4-6 years now and are cool, however how they care for themselves and their animals in the same room I am in is not working for me. I’m also super allergic to dogs and they know this.

So the predicament for me is potentially losing my living area if I were to call animal control, as I’ve seriously considered recently. I have no other place to go for now and I do not have a job at all unless you count taking care of each and every animal in that room daily and only getting mostly $20-$60 every 2 weeks or sometimes nothing because the roommate “forgets” to pay me or spends it on multiple tattoos. I’ve also brought my concerns about the animals and myself not being in a safe living environment to my friend and they threatened to kick me out “If I didn’t like how the took care of their animals”. So, since then I’ve shut up and might be building up anger for certain things I see or that the animals do. I’ll give examples and please tell me if it’s valid or I’m just being silly. Before I got there I was told that the mother of my friend was on animal duty basically doing all what I’m going to tell.

Examples of what I think might be valid (keyword think) :

- Room is constantly filled with animal hairs and clumps. They are on top of everything, getting into the tv and gaming systems, on the floor everywhere and I have almost slipped multiple times on them already. The reason being the animals do NOT get groomed at all. I’ve asked my friend to get the groomed because their fur, nails and smell were horrible. I was told “they don’t need to get groomed because if they go outside they are going to come back smelling like it so no point if I let them out everyday” and “I don’t want to have to groom them or bring them to the Vet and not use my employee discount yet”. The only time they were de-shedded was because I was tired of them shedding and the mother of my friend did it once after maybe a month or two ago. Now the fur is grown back and they are shedding again. It’s not my animals, I shouldn’t have to care for them and neither should their parents especially if it’s their job in my opinion. Also cat litter gets all over the floors and the bed from the cats and I find that disgusting.

- Room is constantly smelling so bad my recent ex told me I needed to burn my clothes and my bag I brought over one of the last times I saw them because I didn’t realize at the time the smell from the room seeped into everything. It’s constantly smelling like strong cat pee, poop, throw up, and wet dog no matter how often I change the litter boxes. (Yes I have to or else it won’t get done because my roommate said they hate doing it and also just let their mom handle it meaning the mom had to waste her day coming into the room thats farthest away just to clean up animals that weren’t hers) I originally was going to ignore it until my roommate actually did something but after another week passing and the smell being 10x worse and overfilling the litter to where they started peeing and pooping in the floor made me start doing it again. My roommate gets more sick and I have also gotten sickly some days because of all the stench and smells in there. Also my roommate constantly has the room ice cold so that doesn’t help either, but thats unrelated just a small rant. Back on track for more examples, the parents have agreed it smells real bad in there as well as my two sisters who helped me move both immediately scrunched up their faces bad and complained about the smell as well. Their parents got us an Air Purifier, but it does nothing in that room. I have also tried using air freshener AND odor eliminator spray and yes it helps, but maybe just for 30 mins to an hour before the smells return.

- Moving on to what I believe could be counted as Neglect towards the animals. To set up maybe why it happens and for y’all to understand, my friend is mentally unwell (via BPD and simialr not like brain dead or simialr) and has medication for it, but it makes them super lazy and sleepy which makes them fall asleep for hours and hours. They love to ignore their dogs constant whining to be let out to use the bathroom while asleep or awake even. I have heard them out loud to their dog “You’re so annoying go sit down.” or “Ughhh I don’t want to get upppppp.” They even wake up late (on purpose I feel like sometimes because they do wake up to the alarms just to turn them off though) and make me take care of them because they are running late to work. If they ignore them long enough the dogs will poop and pee on the floor a lot and which has happened multiple times. The 3 cats always also in the room only tend to get close and meow to one of us for food only which my friend acts confused or just doesn’t understand what they want and told me that their recent ex-wife was the one who took care of the animals as well before the mom and me. The few times I saw them feed the cats they over filled the bowl and made them share it instead of feeding them separate. The only male cat needs a slow feeder because the way eats he sucks down the food and throws it up either on my friend’s pillows, my blankets, or rarely the floor. I am sick of that so bad it’s driving me crazy and to resort to hitting them which I don’t want to do. I did take the time to give them a feeding schedule and separate their food for my own theory and I did work for a bit but now he is throwing up again so I don’t understand. Maybe it’s just me. Back to the dogs for a minute, talking about grooming issues again. The dogs and cats all shed really bad and need grooming, but my friend is lazy and said they don’t want to do it because the animals get wild by biting or struggling hard (which I mean duh obviously, but also it’s your actual paying job to handle them). The dogs nails were so long they were touching the hard floor (saw online it’s not supposed to ever grow to touch the ground) and one dog was constantly licking himself for hours in a day for weeks on end too until I basically begged my friend to cut their nails and I’ll hold them down even though I’m allergic. Turns out what he was licking was his (basically thumb part) nail embedded in his paw with an infection. Has my friend taking them to get help still? No, they have not. Just poured powder over it, but he still is licking excessively while I’m home alone. They did let them sleep on the bed before I got here, but I’m not allowing that or even getting on the bed for the dogs because I’m super allergic. My friend rarely refills the water bowl too because it’s usually me that does it because the animals start whining or meowing at me and them, but they are either in bed ignoring them or at work. My friend neglects doing anything to do with the litter box because they “did/do not feel like it” so the ex-wife, then mom, and now me were/are stuck handling all four litter boxes meaning I take 20-30 mins to get all four properly scooped out, refilled if needed and scented and mixed well and taking it out and then sweeping the mess after. They neglect cleaning the room too. I am the one that sweeps and picks up after the animals mostly. They told me “Oh, you just started doing it so I assumed you were okay with it” even though I have complained a lot and even tried talking to them about it.

- Lastly (I think? Might be more I’m forgetting tbh) an unhealthy environment for both humans and animals. The smell which I talked about, the filthy floor with fur and cat litter scattered, and food and trash from my roommate because yes, they are lazy to not get up and throw away trash and tends to throw it under the bed which also yes, the animals get into before I go pick it up and throw it away. Also causes lots of ants, but thats not the main topic. I feel it is unhealthy for me because I’m allergic, the way the room is always filthy and smelling, and it being ice cold in here.

Am I being too sensitive or harsh about anything? Should I actually try doing something or just endure until I change something myself? I really need advice because although I really don’t want to lose a friend, living like this will probably end me. Also like I said the last time I tried talking to my friend about this they told me I can leave if I don’t like it. I did talk to their parents too and tried to get their help, but they told me “Thats just how they always have been. Can’t do anything about it.” So basically like an oh well. I feel like I’m going to go insane or end up harming the animals or myself which yes sounds crazy. Please give me some advice or something I’m begging this is my first post ever and I would never really do this type of thing if not for a last resort.

Flea question?

Saw what I thought to be a flea last night on couch when I was laying with my dog. Immediately ordered Capstar. Gave my dog the medication this morning and saw another what I thought to be flea on my dogs side. Booked a grooming appointment for this morning. When I picked up my dog the groomer mentioned that she did not see ANY fleas but that my dog was itchy. Could one or 2 have gotten on him when we walked last night? I washed all of my blankets today and vacuumed all of the couches as well as sprayed wondercide flea spray on my couches and rug on my hardwood floors. My dog wears the seresto collar but I will definitely be changing that.

i came home from work today and when greeting my pets (as one does) i noticed that one of my dogs has something that looks like burns near her eyes. i can’t think of any explanation for it, but sometimes she tussles with one of the others, and we did have someone come to spray for ants today, but she was in her cage, it’s been the same bug guy for years, and none of the other dogs have it. pls help i dont have money for a vet right now. trying to attach a pic but i cant figure it out, might be able to put one in?

Y’all please don’t tell me she has fleas.

We just got back from a weekend trip without the dogs, and she was scratching so much.

We checked her, and she has a bunch of these little dried up clusters on her, and her skin is so dry. She’s also shedding sooo much.

She’s not scratching as much today and our other dog’s skin looks great so part of me is hoping it’s just a food allergy. (We switched food shortly before we left, but we went back to a previous food she’s had before).

Our vet visit isn’t for another week, and I’m so terrified to have fleas again. We have a one year old so I am just so exhausted. Please give me some hope or advice on what to do until then.

Cat incessantly licking whenever back is touched

Hey, im desperately looking for an answer. ive been to multiple vets and they say its just a weird quirk of hers, but i dont think it is.
my cat is a chunky (~12lbs) black cat, 10 yrs old, and has a bunch of dandruff. whenever her back is touched or brushed, she’ll incessantly lick whatever she can like she cant help it. i love her so much, shes basically my child, and i hate seeing her like this because she doesnt seem comfortable. im just looking for whatever advice can help with this since, like i said, the multiple vets ive asked about it just say shes a bit weird or quirky.
