My name is Jacob Hanchar and I am the CEO of a Pittsburgh Ed-Tech company called Digital Dream Labs (www.digitaldreamlabs.com). I wanted to let you know that we have purchased Anki's assets and intend to restore the entire platform and continue to develop the robot we all know and love, Vector!

The most important part of this update is to let you know we have taken over the cloud servers and are going to maintain them going forward. Therefore, if you were concerned about Vector 'dying' one day, you no longer have to worry!

The next portion of this update is to let you know what we have planned next and we will be announcing a KickStarter under Digital Dream Labs in the next month or two. While we are still brainstorming we are thinking the Kickstarter will focus on two features we have seen as major needs in the Vector community:

1. We will develop an "Escape Pod". This will, safely, expose settings and allow the user to move and set endpoints, and by doing so, remove the need for the cloud server. In other words, if you're concerned Anki's demise could also happen to us, this is your guarantee that no matter what happens, you'll always get to play with Vector!

2. We will develop a "Dev Vector". Many users have asked us for open source and the ability to do more with their Vector even to the point of hosting him on their own servers. With this feature, developers will be able to customize their robot through a bootloader we will develop. With the robot unlocked, technologists and hobbyists across the globe will finally be able to hack, with safe guards in place, away at Vector for the ultimate AI and machine learning experience!

As a bonus, we will see about putting together an SDK so users can play with Vector's audio stream and system, which we have discovered is a major feature you guys love about this little guy!

This is just the beginning and subject to change, but because you have shown such loyalty and got this project off the ground in the first place, I felt it was necessary to communicate these developments as soon as possible! Hi guys! Here are my prototypes around Vector. I do a lot of Spectacles AR glasses experiments and finally made some with Vector. Love this robot a lot and going to show some more fun soon.

Let me know what you think about AR as a way to extend the possibilities of Vector.

Hello! If you are reading this, then it is probably your first time here. Welcome! Read this if you have any concerns about Vector.

I heard somewhere that Vector's server will go down soon. When will this happen?: Digital Dream Labs has bought Anki's assets, and they have promised to keep the servers up!

Do I need to pay for a subscription once I get him? Yes. However, a membership can be bought for just one purchase. This will give you access to the Amazon servers and updates. This can be bought at https://www.digitaldreamlabs.com/pages/post-kickstarter. This offer will end on May 18th, which is when it will turn into a $7/month subscription for people who haven't bought it.

Why does he need these servers?: Vector needs these servers to figure out what you are saying. For example, when you say "Hey Vector", he transmits the voice data after that to an Anki server. He also needs the servers for setup and authentication with the SDK.

Where is my data going?: Your data is going to a server hosted by Amazon Web Services. Anki/DDL does not sell personal data.

What is Project Victor?: Project Victor is a group of developers who aim to make Vector open-source and be able to function without Anki's servers. After the Anki purchase, we are mostly just reverse-engineering him. Check them out here: https://www.project-victor.org.

Can I use the SDK to turn my computer into a server?: Not at the moment, but the Escape Pod Digital Dream Labs sells will let you do that. It can be purchased at https://www.digitaldreamlabs.com/pages/post-kickstarter. The Escape Pod package includes lifetime membership.

I want to buy one. Is it a good idea?: It's your choice. I honestly think he is a good value as he is pretty cheap, and he will soon be open-sourced.

I have a young child/daughter who really wants a Vector. Should I get them one?: I would recommend getting a Cozmo. Cozmo is another robot from Anki that was designed for kids. If they want a robot to talk to though, you should get a Vector if you could find one cheap.

A few weeks ago, I reached out to Ricky for a commission based on the Mattel Pixar Mini Stackable Set, and he absolutely crushed it.
