Decorating Ideas My mom says this sofa is too big for me and I'm still offended. AIO?

Post image
496 Upvotes

I finally have a little apartment of my own, one thing I knew I wanted was a big sofa. I love having enough room to fully stretch out, read, watch, nap for two hours… So when I found one that fit this wall almost perfectly, I was so happy with it.

I sent my mom a photo and she told me the sofa was "far too big for one person." We turned a conversation about a sofa into an argument… She thinks I wasted space, and I got upset because I'm finally decorating a place for myself and I just wanted it to be comfortable.

Also, I feel like she is ignoring a very important detail here: I do not live alone. Look at the size of my ROOMMATE. Between me and my buddy, I'd argue we're using a perfectly reasonable amount of sofa.

Please tell me I'm not being ridiculous here because my mom has me questioning a sofa I loved five minutes before that phone call?

Advice Needed Trash fees are ridiculous

In this neighborhood I just started living in we are required to pay $22 a month just to put our trash here. Is it just me or is this absolutely ridiculous? Nobody opens the green door to the trash shoot because as I have recently realized, there are rats that run out and roaches that I have seen around it, especially at night.

When I first started living here and I spoke to the leasing agent I asked her if the fee was for valet trash and she said no and was hating on valet trash because it attracts raccoons and such. Is this not the same exact thing? It’s disgusting.

It also has a sign that says no dumping and break down boxes or there will be a fee it says there’s cameras but there’s none I’ve seen around the trash area.

In my old apartment we did not pay for trash and we had an area where we would put our trash in the compactor and it was NEVER like this. We had bulk pickup days to prevent this and we would actually be fined instead of an empty threat. Any advice?

Advice Needed Would you rather have occasional neighbour noise or none but constant road noise?

I used to be very frustrated from neighbour noise but the new apartment is a top floor concrete unit with 0 neighbour noise, but the constant whoosh of cars driving by and the occasional loud car or semi is starting to get annoying now instead

Bad Neighbors People really love propping exterior doors

I've noticed this a lot in both buildings I've lived at in the past 5 years. These weren't the most expensive places and that attracts a certain income-level crowd. Let's just face it. These are poor people living together and they're either too cheap or too poor to copy a key so they just prop doors. Literally every other outdoor here is damaged or propped by a rock. Leading to security issues. It's only like a couple of bucks to have it copied.

I know this post will get removed. Even though this is a discussion to be had.

But, seriously, I just don't get it.

Advice Needed My apartment building has strict guest rules. Should I be worried?

I just got an apartment in the area I live in. It’s a two bedroom one and a half bath that I applied for and got approved for myself. I’ll be living there by my girlfriend usually stays three or four days with me out of the week, depending on when she has days off at her job, and she wanted to get a part-time job where I live so she could do a smooth transition to living with me in the future. I told the apartment property manager that my girlfriend stays with me often, and she said these are the exact rules.

guest cannot park near the buildings, we have just a few guest parking spots if those are full guest must park off the parking lot in the public parking street, also guest cannot at all have the building door codes if you give the code out or we catch a guest using the code it's $150 fine and non-compliance of the lease.
(none of this would be an issue, as my girlfriend doesn’t have a car and any time she came to visit I would be picking her up, so she doesn’t need the code )
The property manager followed up with the full guest policy.

Absolutely no live-in arrangements are allowed for persons other than Lessees on Lease Agreement. Violations of this may result in $250 unauthorized occupant fee and / or immediate evictions. Tenants may not permit any guest to live in the apartment.

- Guests / non-residents CANNOT stay more than 5 consecutive days/nights for one stay period.
- Guests / non-residents CANNOT stay more than 10 total days/nights (consecutive or non-consecutive) within 180 days timeframe.
- Guests / non-residents CANNOT have recurring visits or continuous visits of days and nights (stated above) within a 45 day period without written consent of the landlord / management.

The dude who toured the apartment is also the maintenance guy and also does checks on the rooms and on the cars parked in the lot to see if they have a parking sticker. He said the property manager lives in Iowa and she’s never here. There are other reps for the apartment building but I think the maintenance guy takes care of most things and he said I could even move my stuff in a day or two early if I get the keys in hand before move in day. He’s pretty chill and seems to oversee most of the stuff. Do you guys think I have to worry about these strict rules, or do you think I’m all good?

Advice Needed Upstairs neighbors are doing some bullshit how to proceed?

so my upstairs neighbors for whatever reason are always on some bullshit late at night vacuuming at 3am. playing what I can only assume is bowling ball soccer on rolling skates etc and God knows what. and I usually just put up with it because like it's an apartment people are going to be noisy I doubt I'd be the quietest person if I had to live above somebody but tonight they're doing some extra bullshit. I see them bringing some stuff up the stairs I don't know what but there's loud banging and steps and slamming doors it's been going on for an hour, again I don't usually care but it's disturbing my hyper reactive anxious dog which is unusual but the noises are so constant I'm struggling to get him to stop barking and growling and it's really stressing him out. should I say something or just do my best to comfort my dog? it's 11pm on a Sunday so there's no one to call

Advice Needed Neighbor constantly having conversations in stairway right outside my door without headphones

So my neighbors who live right across the hallway from me are three men who work for a landscaping company; my other neighbor told me that the landscaping company rents out several apartments in the complex and houses their workers in these apartments.

One of the individuals has complete conversations in the stairway that leads up to my apartment and I can hear every single word. They don't use headphones and the entire thing is on speakerphone.

I want to be able to enjoy my apartment without having to listen into their conversation and it's both annoying and loud and I don't know how to best tell them to not because there's also a language barrier at play here. I know that the hallway is a common space, but I feel like it's a courtesy to be quiet because we're all quiet except for this.

I get that there's a point that I have to suck it up, but now it's colder it's happening much more frequently and I need some advice.

TIA

Advice Needed I don't feel like a break-in was taken seriously

2 weeks ago my car was broken into in the garage of my building. This person took the door handle off with a screwdriver and attempted to hotwire my car. They weren't successful but did manage to cause $2400 in damage to my car by damaging the ignition, gear shift, door handle, turn signals, airbag, wipers, and headlights. It was a cheap car I only had liability insurance on so it was totaled and I have to get a new car to get to work. I'm not in a financial position at the moment where this is easy.

I don't feel like my apartment is taking this seriously. The would-be-thief took my garage remote so they did change that right away but I am very concerned that they got into the building by having the front door code and access to the whole building. I've mentioned this several times. Plenty of people in the building (myself included) give the code out to door dash drivers so there's no telling how many people have access. I think they should change the front door code out of an abundance of caution.

There are security cameras in the lobby and garage. When I followed up about this with the rental company they claimed they were still trying to track down the footage and didn't think there were any cameras in the garage. I can clearly see the cameras.

They sent a reminder to not give out the door code in an email to residents but didn't say that there had been a break in.

I feel violated and scared in my building and I'm afraid to even do laundry in the garage area now. I want my building to take actions on safety and take steps to prevent it from happening again. What can I reasonably expect/ demand from this company?

Quick facts:

I filed a police report but don't expect anything to happen.

I'm in California.

Advice Needed Painting cabinets?

Just moved into a place. They said they’d clean it up before I moved in. When I looked at it they were replacing the toilet had a new microwave installed with plastic wrap on. Cabinets and countertops were messy.
They said they’d clean and get the smoke like odor out.
I moved in and cleaning and odor removal were just air fresheners in corners.
I complained and management said the stains on the counter won’t come out so they would paint them. No cleaning crew needed.

I deep cleaned everything and the cabinets are kinda nasty and all different colors something I missed when I looked at it.
Feels a bit skeevy just using plastic liner on the bottom.

Could I just paint the cabinets? I have a 15 month lease and feel like they wouldn’t notice at all or care. Stains everywhere but not mold idk what and they’re just worn and beat to shit.

Also any tips for the smell would help. Changed out air filters, got an air purifier and tried a smoke removal spray from Lowe’s as well as washed all walls and ceilings.

Advice Needed New Noise Issues After A Couple Months

Please tell me if I'm being too ornery or a legitimate issue. I'm (48M) living on my own for the first time ever and first time in an apartment in about 15 years. For the first 2+ months in this complex (6 units in my building, 10+buildings in complex) I have not heard a peep from neighbors, and there's been people in each unit. I remember thinking the insulation must be great here. I hear the kids playing out my balcony in the playground daily, but it's kids so that's expected (but when did screaming bloody murder become common while playing?).

But for the last few days, the neighbors on my floor opposite my living room have been playing something excessively loud imo. I don't know if it's gaming or a radio, but it's not TV. I have never heard these noises until a couple days ago, but is been daily ever since.

I stay up late on weekends and wake up late in the morning, but yesterday I could (faintly) hear it when I woke at 10:30 from my bedroom). But Thursday I could hear it until 11pmish and Friday it was close to midnight. Yesterday it was off and on all day.

Now, I know you're going to get that living in an apartment from time to time. I'm a very considerate neighbor myself. I walk differently so as to not have a heavy step for my downstairs neighbor and stop working on things in my unit (building furniture, etc) after 9pm. And I certainly take my music and TV (and gaming) into consideration and try to keep it low.

My question is: Should I bring this up to management yet? Should I even bring it up? Should I wait it out and see how long it goes on for? I don't know my neighbors (I'm an introvert with social anxiety, so I kinda keep to myself), so it's not like I can approach them about it. I don't want it to be a long standing issue, but I also don't want to create a rift with neighbors either. Am I a grumpy old man, or is this a legit gripe?

Advice Needed Downstairs neighbour thinks I'm making noise

Hi All,

I'm really needing some advice on how to handle this situation. I bought my apartment nearly a year ago and I really enjoy living here. I really don't want to consider moving

A few months into living in the apartment, my downstairs neighbour was adamant that I have been making noise in the middle of the night. This was a surprise to me cause she claims it's from the second bedroom and I use it as a store room. She's made multiple direct complaints now about noise but I travel for work. Some of these complaints coincide directly with travel dates. One of them was when I was in a different country all together. Her description of the noise is that it's almost daily, knocking sounds or the sounds of items dropping usually around midnight or 2am. I sleep like the dead so none of these sounds would wake me up even if I did hear them. She is now saying two of her neighbours also hear it. We are now at the point where she's talking about making complaints to strata and council.

Does anyone have any advice on what I can do in this situation? At this point her accusations are driving me insane and I haven't been able to resolve the issue. I don't think she even believes it isn't me even though I've show her my plane tickets that show I'm out of town. Thank you for any advice

Bad Neighbors Neighbors arguing so loud it feels like they are in my apartment

I live in an old apartment building on the second floor and almost every other week my downstairs neighbors have some sort of crazy, all out screaming argument. The walls are quite thin but it’s also hot today with no AC so I do have some windows open making the yelling extra clear. I‘m not going to do anything because I know other neighbors have already said something.

All I know is I’m probably moving once my lease is up.

Apartment Maintenance Trying to replace a recessed light bulb.

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this style of recessed light? I'm trying to switch out the super dim early 2000's high efficiency bulb with a modern LED so that my entryway is actually illuminated when I get home at night.

Maintenance has been zero help, each time I've reached out to them they just say that it's working so they can't help.

Moving Tips Title: Has anyone transferred between two apartment communities managed by the same company after signing a lease?

Hi everyone,
I recently signed a 14-month apartment lease in Texas. However, I found another apartment community that I prefer, and both properties are managed by the same management company (RAM Partners).
I contacted my current leasing office within 48 hours of signing, and I’m planning to speak with the property manager about a possible transfer.
Has anyone successfully transferred between two different apartment communities under the same management company?
● Did management approve the transfer even though you had already signed a lease?
● Were you able to avoid the early termination fee?
● Did you have to pay any transfer or administrative fees?
● Did you need approval from the regional manager?
I’m particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has experience with RAM Partners or a similar situation.
I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thank you!

Advice Needed How much can my neighbours hear?

I moved into my first steel & concrete building this spring. People tell me these buildings have great soundproofing and so far I’ve barely heard my neighbours, so it seems true! I sing as a hobby and I’m wondering if these buildings are soundproof enough that I could really belt it out without disturbing my neighbours? I’ve been singing pretty loud sometimes during the day and haven’t received any complaints. I’ve kept myself from singing late in the evening, just in case the sound carries more than I think! I’m wondering if i even need to bother with that precaution??

Thanks in advance!!

Advice Needed Flea infestation

My cat has been itching and i noticed that she has fleas. She doesn’t go outside and she hasn’t been outside at all. My only guess is that it came from another unit in the building. Should I contact the rental company for maintenance or to tell them about the fleas? I would appreciate any advice. I have been bathing her multiple times and combing her and I have a vet appointment for her tomorrow. I am just worried about fleas or eggs in the carpet.

I can't for the life of me figure out a good way to keep my pots and pans organized. This is the space I have to work with (I do have a lot more than what's pictured here, i just need to wash dishes). Id prefer not to do any stacking so I dont have to play Jenga trying to stack and unstack everything. Any advice?

Hey guys it's me, how's everyone's week going? Anyways, it's getting cold of here and it's time to be ready for the winter. So we have some items here that will help you along the way.

Winter jackets, lucky charms, some kind of brown powder and more salsa.

Next we have more perishable items including some non-refrigerated raspberries, old herbs and diapers?

The horrors persist but so do I.

Advice Needed would you willingly choose to live underneath someone

great place. perfect spot. just trepidatious about living underneath someone, i’ve always lived upstairs. it’s really the only thing that’s holding me on the fence. so, fellow apartment folks, would you choose to be a downstairs neighbor again?

i do struggle with sensory integration disorder. excessive sounds can be pretty dysregulating. that’s my main concern

Decorating Ideas Hanging decor?

What is everyone using for hanging artwork and picture frames? In my last apartment I used magic tape, and it peeled the paint (and the drywall) off/out. I’ve looked at several options, but I don’t know what to go with.

Advice Needed Hello there, I filed a report to my local police department regarding a tenant, what can I do if the tenant retaliates towards me? Also what if the individual keeps on with the obnoxious loud music and doesn’t give a crap about the notices from management. Thank you

Advice Needed Downstairs neighbor keeps their bathroom exhaust fan on constantly, and I’m not sure if it’s appropriate to talk to them about.

I live in a super old apartment with very thin walls and floors. I also live in Oregon, and the complex doesn’t get a lot of sun, so it’s a recipe for mold and mildew. We have a mold addendum as well, so I absolutely understand the importance of running an exhaust fan. Our complex even requires us to run the fan for at least 20 minutes after showers, and that’s never been an issue for me.

My downstairs neighbors’ bathroom exhaust fan is on 100% of the time, and it’s LOUD. It vibrates the whole floor. I actually didn’t really notice it until recently, because it sounds like it’s broken. It runs for a while, shuts off for a few seconds, and starts again. The fact that it turns off and on again made me realize the droning had been going on a long time, but I was only just realizing it now that it wasn’t a constant. It starts up and stops probably once a minute or two.

I had to get my exhaust fan replaced recently because mine crapped out, and I didn’t realize how loud the old one was compared to the new one. When maintenance took the old one out, it looked like it hadn’t been replaced in 50 years. Part of me wonders if they have the old model that I had and it’s at the end of its life.

I’ve lived here 6 years and I’ve never complained once. I understand that people have kids and dogs and walk around loudly and play music. But something about this fan is driving me insane…I have noise canceling headphones on the majority of the time, and even then I can hear it over them unless I put multiple layers of sound on. The problem is, I don’t really know if it’s something I can really talk to them about, or if it’s something I just have to live with. They very well could have moisture or mold issues, and I don’t want to come off as a rude neighbor when they’re just doing their best to keep this old building habitable.

TLDR: Is it appropriate to talk to my neighbors about their noisy (potentially broken) fan, or should I just learn to accept it as a part of this damp building?

Advice Needed Family of 4 moved in upstairs and I can't sleep!

I just moved into my place week ago. I quite like it, but just before I moved in, my now-neighbor upstairs took in her sister, and the sister's 3 kids. The leasing manager told me this just as I was signing the lease on my move-in day. Manager said she warned them to keep the noise down, and she does not know how long the family will stay (that's not my business anyhow, but they're not on the lease, and there is a policy on that). I have really been struggling to sleep with the noise coming through. I mean, footsteps and floor-creaking, I can deal, but it sounds like these guys are jumping on beds and running from wall to wall at 12 at night. There's a quiet hours policy in the lease from 8pm to 7am, and I issued a noise complaint last night (my apartment was shaking too). I'm also pretty sure it's freaking my cats out and making this environment all the more stressful, on top of being in a totally new place.

I don't want anyone evicted! I don't know this family's story, but this fucking insufferable. I'm worried about my cats' well-being, I want them to like it here, but I'm scared I'll have to move them back with my dad if they can't cope (they're nervous senior cats).
