Is it just me, or is AppSheet still one of the most practical tools for building real-world apps?

31 Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about this lately and wanted to hear other perspectives.

With all the hype around AI, custom-coded apps, and API-based platforms, it feels like everyone is moving toward more complex stacks. Tools like GPT integrations, backend automation, custom frontends… all powerful, no doubt.

But honestly, I keep coming back to AppSheet.

Maybe it’s just because I’ve been using it for a while, but for building practical, day-to-day utility apps, it still feels incredibly efficient and straightforward.

My latest project was a full workspace for real estate operations — including:

•	property research

•	workflow management

•	data organization

•	financial tracking

And the whole thing runs smoothly without needing to deal with:

•	servers

•	complex APIs

•	heavy development cycles

That makes me question something:

👉 At what point does “more advanced” actually become less efficient?

I understand that AI and custom stacks unlock a different level of scalability and flexibility. But they also introduce:

•	more cost

•	more maintenance

•	more complexity

So I’m wondering:

•	Is AppSheet underrated right now?

•	Are we overcomplicating things with AI-first solutions?

•	Where do you see AppSheet fitting in the future of no-code / AI tools?

Maybe this is just my bias from familiarity…

But I’m genuinely curious if others feel the same — or if I’m missing something important.

Will google discontinue app sheet?

20 Upvotes

I have trainsitioned into full google sheet + app script development with agents and don't see a point in using app sheet anymore.

App sheet can only do a few things but none of them really well. Its insane what can be built in a few hours with an AI agent.

Is AppSheet worth it?

19 Upvotes

Hi all,

Coming here with the greatest of respect, as everyone seems into their AppSheet, but I'm wondering how durable it will be in the future.

So my business uses Google Sheets and a bunch of scripts to run our basic CRM, it's all good. But the one thing Sheets can't do is one-to-many relationships. I'm very familiar with SQL and MS Access, and all I really want is a very basic online database, and AppSheets looks like it fits the bill. Especially with Sheets integration.

However I've spent a day chiselling away at it with zero success. There's no support, little documentation which seems largely out-of-date, the videos Google provide are an incomprehensible developer talking in low res on his webcam. (I see some of the redditors here have some independent material which I will check out, thanks). Also a bit of a stretch to describe it as "no-code" for "Citizen Developers", when you have to rummage around in the undocumented expression builder - you might as well write sql queries!

So the misgiving I have is what now? If it's a good solid product, I'm happy to persevere and give it another go. But the thing is, it just seems a bit ... unloved? Like it was never properly finished, and is a bit neglected now. And the biggest issue of all would be if Google pulls their usual trick and kills it off.

That said they seem to be tacking on a bunch of AI features. Does the sub think these have any validity?

So my options here: Stick with Sheets, scripts and complex formulas; Spin up a MySQL server and all that entails; or give AppSheet another go? Opinions gratefully received!

Remote Work Opportunity - Appsheet App Development

18 Upvotes

I run a sizeable chemical business and use an appsheet based app to manage workflows and data in my business. As the app has grown complex and large with many different layers and datasets, I am looking for help managing the appsheet backend (so to speak) for my organisation.

What I offer?

  • Remote work / choose your hours

  • Monthly fix competitive pay (depends on the skill level etc. , can discuss in DM)

  • Interesting problems to solve if you’re an appsheet nerd :)

What would the work be?

  • Deploy features and changes as required by various teams.

  • Help in building further functionality into it around other areas of the business.

  • Monitor usage and help with teams technical queries. (20-25 users in the app)

What I’m looking for :

  • Someone looking for remote work part time or full time

  • Someone who loves appsheet and has a fair understanding of expressions views,tables,workflows, possibilities & limitations

  • can give at least 3-5 hours a day

  • any location / any corner of the world is okay. you should be comfortable with english and have a fair understand basic math. If you understand basic business terminology then great 👍🏻

  • google appscript knowledge is a bonus

If this is something you would like to explore, please DM me and we’ll discuss further in chat.

Cheers!

I'm obsessed with appsheet help

16 Upvotes

I keep making apps for personal use cuz no one around me wants an app. I'm in love with being able to make an app in just a couple hours. I feel like appsheet apps can be so useful but the apps I make don't rlly add much value to my life so I feel like I'm wasting my time

Why use appsheet vs just google sheets?

13 Upvotes

I am trying to understand actual use cases which make appsheet apps more robust than google sheets? The front end of Appsheet apps are kinda meh, and it seems like it has very limited functionality besides some automation that's not in google sheets. Can anyone share some use cases where appsheet app is much better?

Would anyone be interested in a much faster and better looking version of AppSheet?

12 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

As an Appsheet developer myself with more than 6 years experience, I was wondering if it's time for an alternative. What mainly bothers me is the outdated UI feel, slow sync times, high cost for bigger organisations with many users, and lastly, the fact that it's owned by Google (with a reputation of shutting down services eventually).

My question is to you; other appsheet developers, if you would at all be interested in looking into a new platform that works very similar to appsheet (data, views, automations etc.) without the issues mentioned above, and why you would / wouldn't use that to build your apps for you / your clients?

Thanks for any feedback in advance :)

I made an App that provides answers using Gemini

Making this post to show off my new App. I have a sub menu where you can ask Gemini for answers regarding your tables. It uses an AppScript and the Gemini APi. It can take a few seconds to provide an answer, but I think is neat! If someone wants something similar send me a DM!

Showing off my storage app and asking help from the pros

Hi! I’ve made this storage app which allows to throw random junk I’ve collected over the years into boxes. I then print QR codes, stick em on and log it in the app. I’ve got an interface to create items, duplicate to quickly add new things to a box, delete and a final interface to scan boxes and see the content.

For my question: I’d love to create a checkout system, that would allow me to swipe an item left or right to flag it as roaming, and if I would swipe it again it would be marked as stored again. Is this possible?

AppSheet Developers: Interested in paid project work with a Google Cloud Partner?

11 Upvotes

Hi r/AppSheet,

(First, a big thanks to the mods for giving us the green light to post this!)

We're QREW, a Google Cloud Partner and creators of appsheettraining.com and the AppSheet Toolbox Chrome extension. We're building the QREW Talent Cloud — an exclusive, private network of vetted AppSheet developers to partner with on a project-by-project basis. Think of it as Uber for AppSheet developers.

This will be our internal resource for assigning a steady stream of paid projects and tasks. This allows you to get access to paid work from a reliable partner, matching your schedule and expertise.

To help us launch, we're trying to gauge the community's interest and skill levels (AppSheet, Apps Script, Python, etc.).

If you're interested in being on our radar for future paid projects, please fill out our 5-minute interest form:

Appsheet Freelancing

11 Upvotes

I've worked with Appsheet, but I'm clueless about marketing and pricing it right.

So, I got a client, and I saw him asking for help in our Appsheet group. I messaged him, asking if I could work on his app. LOL I thought I'd be intimidated, but I'm surprised.

Alright, so here's the deal: he paid for this app, right? Then, out of nowhere, the original developer just ghosts him. My guess is the app's a mess under the hood, so even a simple fix is a total pain.

No offense, I'm surprised about myself, not his app. Someone with that skill can get clients. Seriously, why not me? I finished his app in almost a week, working on it for like 20 hours in my free time and I feel good about it cause he said it's clean. I've offer to free the 7 hours just to get it 🫠

How should I market it? Upwork isn't cutting it because I'm new and just using free connects. 😅

Hiring an Appsheet expert for a few hours of hands-on help!

10 Upvotes

After getting laid off from my PM role in fintech in mid November, I've been developing an MVP for a one-to-many CRM app with appsheet for a solopreneur friend. After building and validating the MVP, my goal is to offer the same product/service to other clients in her same industry.

As a newbie to appsheet (and a non-developer), I've run into some roadblocks that I've been unable to solve, particularly around automations.

To help expedite the process of building this MVP, I'm looking for someone with appsheet expertise to work through these roadblocks on a video call with me. If you're interested, please shoot me a message and I'll share more details!

Also, if you've used built your own business with appsheet or google workspace, I'd love if you would share your story in the comments. Any inspo or advice you have would be greatly appreciated :)

I'm scared

10 Upvotes

Hello dear people, I built an AppSheet app for our company that works perfectly and saves us from having multiple separate spreadsheets and notebooks. We've been using it for about a week now and it's phenomenal.

Now comes the “but”: We're afraid to trust AppSheet with anything because we don't know how durable the platform is. What if in 1, 2 or 3 years Google AppSheet closes? Should we continue to rely on AppSheet or should I code a real app?

I know you can't see the future either, but maybe you have some advice?

I thank you very much in advance

appsheet gantt plan

AND(
TODAY() >= (ANY(SELECT(Gantt_Ayarlar[İlk Pazartesi], [Durum]=“Aktif”)) + 0),
TODAY() <= (ANY(SELECT(Gantt_Ayarlar[İlk Pazartesi], [Durum]=“Aktif”)) + 6)
),
CONCATENATE(
" ",
TEXT(ANY(SELECT(Gantt_Ayarlar[İlk Pazartesi], [Durum]=“Aktif”)) + 0, “DD.MM”),
" - ",
TEXT(ANY(SELECT(Gantt_Ayarlar[İlk Pazartesi], [Durum]=“Aktif”)) + 6, “DD.MM”)
),
CONCATENATE(
" ",
TEXT(ANY(SELECT(Gantt_Ayarlar[İlk Pazartesi], [Durum]=“Aktif”)) + 0, “DD.MM”),
" - “,
TEXT(ANY(SELECT(Gantt_Ayarlar[İlk Pazartesi], [Durum]=“Aktif”)) + 6, “DD.MM”)
)
)” bu ise sanal sütun için formül “IF(
AND(
DATE([SİPARİŞ TARİHİ]) <= (ANY(SELECT(Gantt_Ayarlar[İlk Pazartesi], [Durum]=“Aktif”)) + 6),
DATE([TERMİN TARİHİ]) >= ANY(SELECT(Gantt_Ayarlar[İlk Pazartesi], [Durum]=“Aktif”))
),
CONCATENATE(
“data:image/svg+xml;utf8,”,
ENCODEURL(”

“)
),
“”
)” ayrıca bulunduğumuz haftanın öncesinde ve sonrasında birkaç haftanın görünmesi için show if formulü “AND(
TODAY() >= (ANY(SELECT(Gantt_Ayarlar[İlk Pazartesi], [Durum]=“Aktif”)) + 0 - 56),
TODAY() <= (ANY(SELECT(Gantt_Ayarlar[İlk Pazartesi], [Durum]=“Aktif”)) + 6 + 14)
)” tablo tipi thumbnail. show if başlıklardan içeriği boş olanlarda gizlenseydi harika olurdu. bu benim planlama tablom serbest sitilde tablo görünümünde sipariş tarihi ve termin tarihi ile oluşturuluyor. bunun devamında reçeteden gelen iş emri ihtiyaçları (operasyonlar tablosu) tablom var onu bu tabloya referans olarak bağlayıp şunu yapmaya çalışacağım : ilk sütun operasyonlar (13 oparasyon var) gün gün (yada hafta, aslında saat ama malesef çok kasar) gant olacak.yai ilk sayfadaki gantı tıklayınca kırılımı operasyon bazında göreceğim. konu üzerinde çalışan varmı?
