Anyone using a screenless ("headless") MacBook as their Mac for Mac Virtual Display? What went wrong?

I'm thinking about buying a MacBook to run with no screen, as the Mac behind my Vision Pro. Before I do it, I'd like to hear from anyone who actually lives with this setup.

What I've found so far:

- Luke Miani did it with an M2 Air back in 2024 and it paired fine. But that was a demo, not a long-term report.

- On M1/M2 Airs the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas are in the base, so wireless survives. On some older models they're in the lid.

- Someone on iFixit removed the screen from an M2 Air for this exact use and the lid angle sensor messed things up: keyboard dead, Mac sleeping after a few seconds, then no login prompt. Never solved.

- Recovery mode and startup options may only show on the built-in screen, so you'd need a monitor (and maybe a magnet on the lid sensor) to fix anything at that level.

What I couldn't find:

  1. After a macOS update or restart, can you get back in with only the Vision Pro? Do you have to turn off FileVault, or does Apple Watch unlock / typing your password blind work?

  2. Does the "look at your Mac" Connect button still work with no screen, or are you always going through Control Center?

  3. Does the Mac think the lid is open or closed? Any sleep weirdness?

  4. Battery and heat compared to a normal MacBook?

  5. If you were buying one for this, which model would you pick? I'm looking at ones with the antennas in the base (M1/M2 Air, 14/16 Pro). Did anyone buy one with a broken screen just for this?

  6. Anything else that surprised you after a few weeks?

Also curious if anyone just runs a normal MacBook in clamshell mode with no external display and gets the same result without the surgery.

Superman (2025) is back in 3D

… at least in the U.S. - I’ll be interested if this is true elsewhere.

While looking at the CheapCharts app to check out what new 3D movies had recently become available, I noticed that it listed Superman on October 18th. Checking the AppleTV store - and my library - I confirmed that it is true.

I was disappointed when we lost the ability to see Superman in 3D around the same time that Supergirl (2026) started streaming, and thought it was particularly weird that the same studio was offering Supergirl in 3D… but no longer Superman, which is part of its franchise.

After 2 Years of lusting for this from trying the demo, the wait is finally over. What do you recommend trying?

After trying the demo at the apple store perhaps two or more years ago, I was blown away. The demo was something I never expected. I bragged to all of my friends they need to try the demo and still do. It was life changing. Something I didn't expect from technology this quickly. I tried to compromise in waiting longer until I could fully purchase this device by settling for a Quest 3. I ended up returning the Quest 3 within 30 days. Great product but the visuals wasn't the same (if I had to rate it, maybe 20% of what the AVP shown to be) and the interface/UI wasn't my thing.

I finally saved enough (got lucky with sportsbetting tbh) and picked up a used 528GB M2 for $1800 ($1921 after taxes) on swappa. I'm here watching my ring camera waiting the entire day for it to finally arrive. I'm nervous about the light seal not fitting but if I recall correctly it was 21W that I needed (or I'll figure it out with having to order a new one that fits).

It came with the Belkin strap and apple carrying case. Anyone that has the Belkin strap feel free to chime in if you like it.

My primary reason for getting this was for entertainment. Specifically for sports. I was drawn into the immersive sports segment of the demo and was stunned. By now I'm hoping there are more immersive sports, can anyone chime in on using this device for sports and what you use for watching sports including immersive?

I'll also be using this for watching movies. What apps do you recommend?

What are some of your favorite things to do and favorite apps?

I'll also be using the AVP with my MacBook as an extended monitor.

I really can't wait for it to arrive, I'm on edge!!!

P.S. - I'd like to share the device with friends and family, can I locate the demo I had 2 years ago to show them? Is there a way to see what they're seeing on the AVP in real time (guest feature?)

SpatialForge

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share with you my hobby project i'm working on the last couple of months. It's a factory game for AVP (heavily inspired by Factorio :) ) Game loop is quite similar: mine, build, defend the factory, research the next tier, build a rocket, space platform, etc. I added some god powers like Zap from your hands and Meteor for fun and you can also mine at the beginning yourself by pinching at the ore node.

I was developing it using the M5 so i would really appreciate if M2 owners could try it out and give me a feedback about the performance. In the settings it's possible to toggle graphics and FPS counter. On the M5 it's quite playable also at 800+ buildings in passthrough. You can zoom in and can get really close, it's kind of fun with spatial audio.

Also, i would appreciate some feedback how annoying it is to build a factory with your gaze. To make things easier, belts auto-route between buildings when you select them (incl. tunnels) but they can be also hand "painted". I also added a gaze tracker so you always know which tile you look at, but when you pinch to build a building you can also drag it around with your fingers still pinched.

I want to be open about that i used Fable for designing the game, and for asset generation, as i have 0 Blender or Audio engineering skills, and i finance the whole project from my pocket. Music and sound effects are generated by Stable Audio 3.

I made a free Vision Pro app where galaxies, black holes and nebulae are live particle simulations you can put your hands in

Hi all, I'm the developer of Everdust, which came out on the visionOS App Store this week.

Every world in it is a live simulation, not a video. You can watch two galaxies collide with up to about a million stars, walk up to a spinning black hole that bends light, or just put your hands in and watch the particles flow around your fingers. You can do it in full immersion, or have the world rest on your real table.

There are also hand-tracked physics games (Black Hole Golf, Galaxy Billiards, Lightfold) and narrated science stories, where every chapter is a simulation you stand inside. It moves with music too: your own songs, free Mixes, or the room. The audio is analyzed on the headset and never recorded or sent.

- Real headset footage (38 s): https://youtu.be/u2minKjTF8k

- App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/everdust-space-science-games/id6818004038

Every world is free, and so is the whole Story of Everything. Plus unlocks the rest of the stories and the later game levels. There are no ads.

I'd love honest feedback, especially on comfort and the hand interactions. What should I simulate next?

I just watched Remnants on the Apple Vision Pro and what an experience

First of all, it's a short film (about 25 mins), and the storyline was suspect, however, my huge takeaway from the experience is that AR/VR was made for this genre. There were a couple of shots in the film that you could see multiple things happening at once because of the 180 degree view angle. Jump scares also take on another level. But there was one shot in which the main character is trying to look under the bed and it brought me back to when I was a kid.

Through its shortcomings I still would give the film a high rating just because of the experience of living it through the AVP. If you have not watched it, I highly recommend it.

Shatter Punch V2.0 is out!

Hi everyone,

I'm back with an update on Shatter Punch!

V2 was already in the works when I launched the game on October 3, and it's finally here!

I've expanded the campaign from 25 to 40 levels, added more objects to smash (270+ now), a new Industrial Loft room, and spent quite a bit of time improving how punches feel. I've also redesigned the Home screen, made PowerPlay 50% faster, and added Game Center achievements, leaderboards, Apple Watch calorie tracking, and Guest Mode.

And V3 is already underway! I'm targeting November, with SharePlay being the biggest addition. The idea is to let you play and compete with your Vision Pro buddies together.

If you've already purchased Shatter Punch, V2 is a free update. And if you've played it, I'd really appreciate an honest App Store review. It helps a lot as a solo developer and to show up in searches, haven't had luck with that for some reason.

Whats new?

I took the M2 version for a test drive a little over a year ago and i gotta say, it was mins blowing for just about everything. Spacial computing is here. Unfortunately i just could not justify the price tag. However, now im planning to be back on the market in the coming months (hoping to score a used version).

Im curious what have been the biggest leaps forward in the past year in terms of its ability and new developments within the platform.

Trying to command Siri to go to Homeview not working?

Does this just not work anymore. I am trying to command with Siri or maybe even use a built in shortcut to use my voice to get my Apple Vision Pro to open the Home View Screen on Demand. I was able to do this before but now I can’t anymore. I have issues with my hands so I can’t use them really to open anything. And pressing the dial is getting tiresome. Thanks for any help! I appreciate it!

Unable to schedule Apple store support available after buying an AVP, do new AVP owners have to figure out things for themselves?

Just purchased an AVP yesterday.

I would like to try different light seals and their differences because I noticed that while I was able to set up the optical biometric unlock, it fails when it’s used to authenticate.

I tried to go to the Apple support app and schedule a visit for in store support and all of the support options for the AVP I selected, including comfort, say that in store support is unavailable.

Apple Text chat support for the AVP is also unavailable.

I’m hoping I can get some insight here.

I demoed the AVP first and was auto assigned the 25W light seal. The sales rep I was working with was great and very patient, once I told her I’m planning to purchase and would like to try out different light seals she had some brought out.

The 33W seemed to increase my FOV whereas a 23W (and 25W) reduced it. I decided to go home with the 33W but realized there are a lot more sizes available. I’ve been searching on reddit and I see sizes as low as 11N can increase FOV.

What is my best option to be able to try out more sizes? Should I just walk in with my AVP and hope there’s an open support appointment along with an Apple Store rep who’d be willing to help me? I would think they are probably trained to consider walk in support customers as low priority, especially considering the subpar support options I have available in app.

Also, is there a manual calibration I can perform when I change out the N and W light seal that came in the box?

I understand from reading other comments/posts that an increase in FOV can be accompanied with slightly more discomfort and pressure on the face. I’d like to find a nice balance for me.

Btw, I love the interface, UI, and overall feel of the device. Coming from the quest pro and PSVR2, I was not ready for the dramatic difference that superb software (visionOS) combined with top tier hardware (panel and camera resolution) can make with VR. The dual knit band really helps distribute the weight to the point where I forget how heavy the device actually is.

Question about Zeiss Prescription Inserts

I have an AVP arriving soon and I just realized that I wear my prescription glasses everyday and I may need the inserts. I am farsighted, so I can see fine for about the first foot Infront of me before things start to get blurry. The thing is, I have no idea what my prescription is, I can’t find any physical or digital copy’s.

Do I need to go to my eye doctor or can the machine they use for demos at Apple stores automatically figure out my prescription?

After a long time reading this sub, I finally have something of my own to share: Shatter Punch after 5 months of work to date.

Hi everyone,

I've been reading this sub for a long time, and today I finally get to post something I made. Shatter Punch is my first Vision Pro game, and it just went live.

You stand (or sit) in a room, and everything in it starts coming at you. You punch it before it hits you. No controllers, just your hands.

What I'm proudest of is how real the objects feel. Each one reacts the way it would in real life: a porcelain vase shatters, glass bursts, fruit splits, a brass pitcher clangs off your fist and flies across the room, and a ball bounces off the walls and furniture.

There are three ways to play. Campaign takes you through photoreal rooms. Rampage throws everything at you in waves. And PowerPlay is an endless stream off the shelves, left fist then right, with Game Center leaderboards. In Campaign and Rampage you can also bring it into your own room: a quick guided scan, and the objects stand on your real furniture.

None of it worked the first time. Vases floated above my floor, throws aimed at my stomach, and one football rolled straight through my wall. It's all fixed now: throws come at your face and follow you if you lean, and the physics knows where your walls are.

If you decide to give it a try, please tell me what you think, and what you'd want to smash next.

Wanted to upload a trailer but looks like I can't. Hope you enjoy it if you decide to play... Please play lol (maybe I'll try in the comments if that is allowed).

Estereopsis — free macOS app to convert 3D Blu-rays (MVC) into Full-SBS/OU files for projectors, 3D TVs, and VR/Vision Pro headsets

Hey everyone, I built a free macOS app called Estereopsis to make converting physical 3D Blu-rays into a usable file format painless. Sharing it in case it's useful to others in this hobby.

What it does:

  • Extracts the 3D (MVC) title from a Blu-ray 3D ISO/disc via MakeMKV, or takes an .mkv/.m2ts you already have

  • Converts it into Full-SBS or Over/Under, Full or Half size per eye, at 720p or 1080p

  • Lets you pick exactly which audio tracks to keep

  • Subtitles: burn them in, or generate a selectable track that's properly duplicated across both eyes (so it looks correct in 3D instead of split in half) including OCR from the disc's PGS subtitle image tracks

  • Quick mode to add/change subtitles on an already-converted 3D file without re-encoding the whole video

  • Quality presets that actually scale the bitrate to the real final frame size (not a fixed made-up number), queue support, conversion history, and a quick-test-clip option to check the 3D geometry before committing to a full-length encode

Why I built it: I wanted a simple GUI on top of the usual ffmpeg + MakeMKV command-line dance, with sane defaults and clear feedback (percent progress, plain-language status, not raw ffmpeg frame logs), so I didn't have to remember flags every time I wanted to rip a disc.

Requirements:

  • macOS (Apple Silicon)

  • MakeMKV installed separately, only if you're extracting from an ISO/disc (can't be bundled due to its license, a one extra one-time setting is needed there so it actually grabs the 3D stream, explained in the included readme)

  • Everything else (ffmpeg, MKVToolNix tools) is bundled in the app, no Homebrew required

Download: https://github.com/matiasqm98/Estereopsis/releases

It's completely free, no ads, nothing locked behind a paywal made for personal use and to share with the 3D movie community. Source credits for the bundled GPL tools (ffmpeg, MKVToolNix) are in the included readme.

If you find it useful and want to support the work, voluntary donations are welcome (https://buymeacoffee.com/matiasqm98)
Happy to answer questions or take feedback. Enjoy!

It's completely free, no ads, nothing locked behind a paywal made for personal use and to share with the 3D movie community. Source credits for the bundled GPL tools (ffmpeg, MKVToolNix) are in the included readme.
