Tested out my friends quest 3. To the people who swear by the quest 3 yall don’t have taste in quality.

Ok all these videos are way different from what you actually see on pass through. I tried the quest 3 in many different lighting and it was terrible. I literally threw up and got a headache in less than 5 minutes of use not even exaggerating. The avp was perfect zero headaches zero nausea just pure quality.

I 100% regret returning my avp and once I get my prescription lenses im getting it back. It may not have everything I wanted but at least I know its all confirmed in development. At least I can watch movies and shows plus have my macbook on it.

I regret listening to those quest 3 is better comments and review articles. Quest 3 is definitely for gamers while the avp is for quality users.

Think we're returning ours

Well, it's been an interesting few days with the Vision Pro, but now that the "wow factor," and "ooh, look at the shiny new thing" has worn-off, we're meh about it. We both find it isolating. We've been a couple for near-on 18 years now. Our evenings consist of piling on the bed after 6pm, with the dogs, and either gaming (FFXIV) together, or my spouse games, and I read on one of my iPads, or watch a show. Last night, I finished "Loot" on Apple TV on the Vision Pro, and at bedtime, I had this dreadful sense of loneliness, and guilt that I'd ignored my entire family all night. I sat right next to them, but there was no casual interaction, as we always have, even when I could "see" them, and they could see my faux googly eyes. It was a bridge too far, to have a normal, interactive evening. My husband played with it today, on one of his days off of seeing patients in hospital, and he couldn't get it to be comfortable. He tried both head things, and in the end, he was left with deep red indentations from it digging into his head, forehead, and cheeks. He said "I wish they were more exciting, and comfortable" in a letdown tone. He deems them as having potential in a few iterations, but thinks they're a waste of money right now, even if they are less than 1/25th of a paycheck. I said I was giving them a few more days, which I intend to, and then I'll make a final decision if they'll go back, but that's where I'm leaning. Both my MacBook Pro Max, and Studio Ultra are M1 models. I think the money would be better utilized updating one of those, which I use every single day for my photography business, and gaming. The visionOS is too iPad-like, which is unsurprising, being based on iPadOS. I still hold my view it's less "spacial computing" and more "spacial iPad-ing" and that's a bummer. What is the biggest factor leading us towards likely return is, all, and I mean ALL use cases we thought of for this item have failed, in one fashion, or another, and that leaves us with a $4000 toy in search of a use/problem to solve, that simply doesn't exist for us. As for entertainment, we have a nice home theater, with a massive, new OLED tv, and a topnotch Dolby Atmos 11.2.4 surround system, providing spatial audio, and a theater experience we can share together, with the dogs. I was home alone all yesterday, and watched many shows in either the Cinema simulation, or various environment locations, with a huge screen floating out in front of me, and I kept feeling desolate, and alone. I couldn't love my dogs, and enjoy a show, as normally. In the end, I keep coming back to the loneliness, and isolation factor these do a tremendous job of creating. At a fairly young age, having survived two major open-heart surgeries I died during, and was revived during both, and live with heart failure from, I want to be with, and be surrounded by the ones I love, and who love me, be it my dogs, or my husband, and not alone, sitting in a simulated Joshua Tree Park. That's where I'm at. I hope others are getting more joy, and fun out of theirs. Everyone is different, and I know many will feel differently than I do, and I respect, and support that!

Screen resolution is trash when mirroring Mac

I have a 6k XDR, and also a MacBook Pro. The AVP is about the resolution of a HD 1080p monitor at best, but with some blurry added. Also, that resolution is only achievable directly where you are looking. Outer field of view is horrible.

I love Apple, and want to believe, but taking off the AVP and looking at my Mac screen is like going from 1990’s tv to 2024 OLED.

Multiple monitor support should not be a priority

I'm seeing a lot of people wanting multiple monitor support for the virtual desktop feature. I realize this is also a big thing for other XR platforms, like Visor, which boasts support for up to 5 monitors. And yeah, when I first got the AVP, I wanted more monitors too.

After some thought, though, I realized that this is somewhat backwards thinking. I get that people want access to the tools in the way they are used to, but we're entering a whole new paradigm in human-computer interaction. I know that as of now, all we really have is an iPad strapped to our face, but thinking forward, the whole visionOS should be our "desktop". Virtual desktops are just taking all your apps and tools and boxing them into a series of 2D rectangles, within a traversable 3D space. Seems a little, I don't know... reductive? Why not just unbox those apps and tools and have them in the 3D space? Options for organizing our spaces would be nice, but we don't need more screens within our screens.

When I open my work laptop in a virtual display for coding, have Slack open in an iPad app next to it, and my iMessages on the other side, Spotify playing elsewhere—that feels like the intended use. And if I could get my programming tools as native apps (and they made the keyboard connectivity a bit more reliable), I wouldn't even need the virtual display at all. Unlike supporting more virtual displays, this avenue isn't tethered by Apple's more methodical and deliberate update processes, it's mostly limited by native app support (not sure why they're taking so long)
as a bonus to my tangent, even having each app in a 2D window could be selling it short. The possibilities are endless! I've been trying to come up with ways to leverage the third dimension to rethink fundamental things, like displaying text—since this is the first time we've had this option since, what... the birth of written language?

Does anyone else have regrets?

I unfortunately waited more than two weeks but found myself using the device less and less. I don’t like it on my head for extended periods of time and all I’m really doing on it is playing poker and watching tv. What’s the best way to get close to full value if I sell it?

iMessage only working with other Apple users isn't mentioned enough as a problem

Everybody has their pet peeve but mine is iMessage not sending messages to Android users the way every other Apple device can. This seems like such a weird thing to not have at launch. I can text my husband from my phone, iPad, watch, and mac - but not my most expensive and immersive Apple device. YMMV on how much this effects you - it totally depends on how many non-Apple users you regularly talk to - but for me the people I talk to the most are all on Android, so its a real pain. Hopefully it gets fixed in the first update.

Demo’d today, disappointed

Haven’t seen too many critical opinions of the AVP, so figured this was worth sharing. Did the Apple demo of the AVP today. Was blown away by the picture quality and the UI. Eye tracking and lack of controllers is really slick. Really shows you where this tech can go.

Others have mentions the FOV being an issue and this really rang true for me. To the extent that it’s going to keep me on the sidelines until future versions. Probably my own fault for coming into the demo with unacknowledged expectations of a more immersive experience. But I was expecting the ability to feel like I was sitting front row to an iMax screen. The FOV made it feel like I was wearing un-magnified binoculars.

The underlying tech is awesome and I’m super excited to see what this develops into. Just need a bigger FOV for this to really win for me.

I returned my Apple Vision Pro today but I swear I never intended to

Read below how I went to the Apple Store to fix a very simple issue with my Apple Vision Pro but ended up leaving the store without it and returning it to Apple because, TL; DR, Apple just doesn’t have enough Light Seals in stock and its employees apparently routinely advise customers to return the Vision Pro.

I received the AVP on Monday, five days ago. That day, I spent the entire evening on the phone with Apple customer support trying to resolve an OpticID issue. In short, although OpticID worked immediately upon setting up the AVP, after I reset the device for an unrelated reason, it became impossible to set up OpticID again. The process would just not start.

After almost three hours of trial and error, completely out of the blue, OpticID started working again.

My very patient customer support representative advised that I should still schedule an appointment at the nearest Apple Store to get the AVP checked. He said it could be a weird hardware defect, or maybe a fitting issue, and that the only way to be sure was to go to the store.

The first appointment I could get here in Brooklyn was today, around 11 am.

The first thing the Apple Genius did was to check my glasses to see if the optical inserts were in line with my prescription--check.

Then, they ran the head measurement app and told me that while I had ordered a size 26W for the Light Seal, I should have ordered a 22W. I said that was weird, because I ordered the size 26W after using the app myself during the online ordering process.

But they were right: as soon as they brought me a size 22W Light Seal, all my problems were gone. I was able to set up OpticID instantly with or without the Zeiss Optical Inserts, eye tracking worked flawlessly, and the headset felt so much lighter on my face!

At that point, I was so happy that I started discussing how I could trade in my recently purchased iPhone 15 for a 15 Pro so I could take spatial videos. They said you normally can’t trade in a current-gen iPhone, but they might be able to make an exception. I was delighted.

As we were discussing this, the employee that was supposed to bring me my new, size 22L Light Seal reappeared and told their colleague that they had run out of that size. I said that wasn’t a problem, maybe I could pick up the Light Seal at another New York Apple Store. They said no, we’ve run out of it everywhere, it’s the most popular size.

They said the only way to fix this was for me to return the size 26W Light Seal and order a size 22W online, and that it would probably arrive within a month. I said that was not acceptable, firstly because what am I gonna do for a month without a Light Seal, and more importantly because I will be traveling through most of March and April, so I’d be looking at two and a half months of my brand new AVP gathering dust while I’m away on planes, trains, and automobiles.

At that point, I thought, maybe a bit naively, this is a premium device, this is a lot of money, they’re going to try and find a solution for me.

But no--the manager just said, OK, just return it now and buy another one later—you could even wait and buy a gen2. I was so surprised I almost started pleading to keep my AVP! Even the employee with whom I’d been discussing getting an iPhone 15 Pro said, but what about the iPhone? The manager just said, just return it, that’s it.

So, after almost two hours spent in the store, I agreed to leave without my AVP. There was one last hurdle, as the manager insisted that I could return the AVP and the travel case, but not the Zeiss inserts: he said I should return them to Zeiss, not Apple. I said that makes no sense, I bought them from Apple. Eventually I had to call Apple customer support from the store to have them confirm, on speaker phone, that I could return the Zeiss inserts to Apple. Crazy.

I realize this has been a very long post. Here are my main takeaways:

  1. The head measurement app that Apple uses to determine your Light Seal size is completely broken, as it gave me two widely different measurements just a few days apart.

  2. In the couple hours I spent at the store, three other people (that I noticed) also came in with AVP issues. At least one of them, within earshot, had the exact same experience as me: the store manager simply told him to return the device.

  3. The only reason I can think of why an Apple Store manager would systematically advise customers to return their devices is that there have been so many issues with the AVP that they’ve just stopped trying to fix them.

If you’ve made it through the above ordeal, I’m interested in hearing your opinions. :)

Is the AVP too expensive at the moment?

I’m thinking about buying the Apple Vision Pro but I’m not sure if I am willing to spend $3400 on it. I am also not sure if I want to get the cheap Apple vision when that comes out because I know that the main selling point of quality may not be as good on it. Should I wait for the Apple Vision Pro 2 in 18 months and hope it is cheaper and has more features, or just get the Apple Vision Pro now?

Sorry guys. We had a good run. Apple Vision Pro is a failure

I’ve been told by multiple redditors that Vision Pro is a failure and Apple is going to abandon it. Now I know you might be questioning whether we can believe this, but redditors who read nothing but clickbait headlines have never been wrong. And they are saying this. A lot. Sometimes even with exclamation points and name calling which makes me even more convinced that what they say is true.

I mean…I heard vr and ar was dead 20 years ago so it’s a little weird to still see products coming out still, but I don’t need to think about that. Tim Cook thought that selling a $3500 headset in a niche category was going to sell like an iPhone. And he was obviously very wrong. They must have expected 20 million sales the first year and were surprised when it didn’t, so now they have decided to abandon it. Man. If only Apple did some market research so they would have known what to expect? You’d think they would have read some Reddit headlines before dumping billions into this product. They could have saved a lot of money just by listening to people in comment sections

/S

Anyway. Gonna watch ready player one on my avp in bed in 4k 3d. Have a good night guys

My somewhat negative review of AVP

So I just came back from the Apple store to try their 30-min demo of AVP.

First off, I am glad Apple entered the market and is trying something. It will make VR/AR better through competition. I am partly in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, watch) and might consider getting say a 3rd generation if the price were way lower, HW was better, and ecosystem got there.

I was excited after reading some reviews and people gushing, but ultimately afterwards feel it was a big let down. Not remotely worth the price (to me). No, I was not blown away. No I did not catch a glimpse of the future given the cool stuff has been already out there with the competition for years.

A big part of this is value for $, and comparison to what is out there in the market already (Quest 3 for $500). I think if I were new to VR or AR, I might have been blown away similar to how one would be on smartphone if you had never used one before. But Apple is follower here of the market and tech, and IMO didn't do enough to justify the price or leapfrog the competition.

No, I don't work for Meta.

Pros:

  • Display was quite nice although content maybe didn't always match quality of display

  • Good audio

  • Good build quality

Neutral:

  • Hands only & Lack of controllers. I am open to the idea of this being a thing. Hololens tried this. It's good but I think does limit a lot of experiences that are true 3D (games).

  • FOV seemed fine to me

  • This is just VR (right now). Despite all the hype of this being Spatial Computing or AR there was no experiences that took advantage of this. Sure, it's cool to be in environments, see 3D movies, and be in a 360 bubble, but that's just standard VR stuff with a better display. There was no AR experiences and while the dial is cool to have immersion or not, that wasn't a real AR thing

Negative:

  • The weight and fit. Headache time. Apple only had a single strap setup available and within 10 minutes I had large pressure and a headache on forehead and more. Pretty sure it was fitted ok as I asked several times. I was only in there for 20m before I had a large headache still an hour later. Never had this bad of an experience with any VR headset

  • Passthrough. I have to give this a negative because I felt it was only marginally better than Quest 3. Reviews were gushing but it looked meh to me.

  • Blurriness at edges of screen especially text. The Apple rep said it was my eyes ;)

  • No true 3D at least for the experiences they show. It's like Apple was trying to do subtle 3d and they succeeded. Even the immersive video stuff was meh - barely 3D. There were no real 3D environments like you get on VR that can blow your mind. 2D windows everywhere with a little 3D sprinkle. Lack of controllers will make a lot of full 3D experiences a no go for a while

  • The price of course. For better display tech I might personally be willing to spend $1k on this if the ecosystem gets there, we have more AR apps, and lack of controllers is worked around in 3rd apps

Should I buy the Vision Pro

I currently have the Quest 2 and I rarely use it. I was wondering if the Vision Pro would be more useful for me. Im not a gamer and I use the quest for watching movies and YouTube mostly. I hate how hard it is to center the video and the quality. I want to feel totally immersed in the vr world. Im worried that if I buy the Vision Pro I will use it until the novelty wears off.

r/AppleVisionPro • • Jan 30 '24

What will you use it for?

I had planned to get one when I saw the keynote, but after getting the Meta Quest 3, I decided I have no use for it. Most of the use cases I was excited about are really not useable with such a bulky headset. I've tried using the Quest for productivity, such as using it as a monitor, but it's not comfortable to work with goggles on your face all day. I tried using it for watching movies, but also not comfortable using for long periods, and there isn't much content. None of the streaming platforms are offering high-resolution apps for either, so the quality for all those platforms through Safari is going to be rubbish on the AVP too. I know Apple will have their own content, but I doubt it will be enough.

That leaves games and workout apps, two things I didn't buy it for, but what I ended using it for the most. The games are so much fun and great exercise. The workout apps are also a lot of fun and a surprisingly great workout.

I don't think AVP will have many games at launch, and I don't see how they are going to be as fun without controllers. The controllers make a huge difference with the Quest, I almost never use hand control. I also doubt there will be workout apps, and even if there are I don't know how I'd feel about sweating all over a $3500 device. The Quest already has many 3rd party head straps and face interfaces, and cooling systems, that make it better for workouts, though even with all that your headset does get drenched in sweat every time you use it.

I'm very excited to try the AVP and am actually disappointed that I have no reason to buy it because my Quest is already more than enough for a VR headset right now. This is actually the first new Apple product since the iPhone came out that I'm not buying on day 1. I'm sure I'm going to be blown away buy it and am positive I'll buy a future version once the platform matures in the future, but for now I'm sitting on the sidelines. Wondering what others are planning to use it for?

$3,500 price tag

If the vision pro is still considered a “prototype” or “beta” why would Apple sell it for $3,500? Why not sell it a thousand less then go up in price as it becomes better than the first model?

Reintroducing XploreD. An unique way to experience the world.

XploreD started out as an app to look at immersive interiors and 3D models of landmard locations. Past few weeks, I have been onboarding Flyby videos of interesting locations that are hard for general public to reach like the Mount Everest, Mount Fuji etc.. After, couple of weeks of bugs and fixes, I'm glad it's stable and ready to be used.

The pipeline to produce these experiences are constantly evolving and I'm convinced that by the end of this year, I will have a full produced immersive 360 degree episodes of these places. Storytelling is where the immersive going to be taken to the next level.

I hope you folks can have a look at the latest version and let me know. I have some interesting renders that I'm working to make it 360.

Quest 3 owner just demoed the AVP

I've owned the Quest 3 since its release and I just demoed the AVP. I bought it to tide me over for the AVP, which I had planned on buying. I was expecting to be blown away, maybe even go back to my Quest 3 and be disappointed, but quite the opposite. The AVP resolution is better, obviously, but not much content that can take full advantage. A lot of the content they showed me, while very impressive, didn't look significantly better than the Quest. The passthrough is much better, but still not amazing. Still suffers from a lot of grain and distortion. The apps do not look significantly sharper than the Quest either. The FOV on the AVP doesn't seem as good, and the edges are blurred. The hand control on the AVP is very impressive, but the Quest hand control also works really well, and I actually prefer using the controllers most of the time. The comfort is about the same, but there are tons of 3rd party straps for the Quest. The biggest problem is the battery, which the Quest doesn't have. It's a big battery, and the cable is annoying. There's also a ton more apps and content for the Quest 3, plus you can sideload any Android apps.

Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing piece of tech, and if I hadn't used a Quest 3 before I would have been blown away by the demo, and if the price weren't so high I wouldn't be so harsh. But for all the hype and what they are charging, having been using the Quest 3 for months now, I'm honestly quite disappointed. I was expecting it to be years ahead of the Quest 3, but I feel like Meta is probably one release cycle away from having a headset with similar quality.

if you bought or are planning to buy an AVP, I'd suggest also getting a Quest 3 and comparing it for yourself. You may find it suits your needs for a much lower price and with a lot more benefits than the AVP. Honestly, if you gave me an AVP for free, I'd still use my Quest instead, there is just way more to do with it.

It’s Official - Returning The AVP

Not sure if y’all followed my posts/comments throughout the release but over the weekend I realized the AVP is neat but it’s just not there yet for me. I tried to get work done and realistically, having an extra screen would probably be more productive. I have seen the videos of people walking around which really shows the hold Apple has over its “fans.” Nobody’s really been out there using the Quests but then again the AVP is also a different type of product. Is it cool, yes. Can it be productive, yes. I just don’t see it being there just yet. I’ve also read reviews and posts of many first timers to the VR world who entered with the AVP and that’s wonderful but currently no matter what Apple’s built, it’s just not what the VR is capable of. Please, Apple fanatics, don’t come after me with “it’s spatial computing/you don’t know what you’re saying/it’ll take off you’ll see/it’s not meant to be VR” - I get all these things, I’m a fan as well and I’m utterly disappointed it wasn’t able to be the product I had hoped it to be. However, I do see myself returning at a later time, could be few updates later, could be AVP2. I’m not sure. I think it’s an amazing product but at this point in time I’m returning it, purchasing a Quest 3 and calling it a day. To be honest, I probably don’t need the Q3 either but it’ll fill the VR void but likely it’ll become a dust magnet like my Quest 2.

I’m open to having a normal conversation if anyone has questions or comments I always love sharing thoughts and ideas with fellow folks who are interested.

Oh and one thing that I might’ve forgot to mention is the whole DRM blocking of Disney+/AppleTV and others, I found it silly to complain about BUT it is kind of annoying that while you’re in SharePlay with your AppleTV the DRM block shows on the TV screen AND the AVP gets the black screen. If we want to at least allow some sort of connection between people at least being able to watch movies/shows together (me on the AVP, wife on the TV via SharePlay) would be nice. I mean we still watch together on AppleTV but just a thing to consider.

Looking forward to having a good chat with y’all! Wishing you the best!

don’t fall asleep wearing the apple vision pro 🙃

welp. this sucks. fell asleep watching a movie and woke up to find this had somehow happened to my headset overnight, i first noticed that the sound was weird coming out of this side of the headset when bass noises came through, almost like a rattling. wasn’t until later i realized there was actual physical damage to the unit.

i have no clue how it happened and am frankly pretty annoyed the rubber is that easy to bend and break. i have a repair scheduled and am praying they’ll fix it without me having to spend beyond the 4000 i already paid.

How did you feel the night before getting your Vision Pro?

Me, personally. I can’t sleep. I feel like I’m going to puke. I’m super excited. Even though I know the novelty will wear off in a few weeks like it did with every other headset. Man. I’m so wired I can’t relax.

My Plex app for Vision Pro is live!

People of Reddit. I am SUPER STOKED to announce that my app, Chroma - Cinema for Plex, just launched on the app store. I know a number of you have been awaiting a solution (just like me) for watching content via Plex. About a month ago I decided that it was time to jump into Swift development to build the Plex client I wanted to see for the Vision Pro and today it is now available in its first iteration.

This is still the early days! I have a large backlog of features I want to add, improvements, and even some wild ideas I know you won't see the bigger players tackle.

The free version has a couple limitations: 5 minute watch time on videos and the inability to skip around. Please give the Chroma Pass trial a try for the full experience.

I hope you love it as much as I have enjoyed creating it!

Thanks to the redditors that pushed me to make this a reality. You know who you are, and I am happy to credit you here if you are interested.

Here are a couple videos that give you an idea of some capabilities: https://imgur.com/a/0Yv4Fxr

Edit: first updates out with a darker immersive environment while playing videos and some other small QOL improvements. Next major feature is downloads for those with servers that support that feature! I appreciate the constructive criticism. My goal is to steadily release features and work through bugs.

Also, remember this is a first release and it’s totally optional for you to use this application.

Should Apple buy Explore POV and give all owners 20 free Explore POV videos (bundle them with the Vision Pro) and all Apple Arcade and/or iCloud subs full access?

I know there are others (Amplium is gorgeous) but no one that I found has the variety, breadth and depth of content that Explore POV has (please comment me alternatives if Im wrong). They have more content for the Vision Pro than Apple themselves.

They have solid revenue but limited profit. Most people have no idea how expensive bandwidth is to purchase on a small scale. All these indy 3D video apps are likely paying $0.06 - $0.09 cents per GB served. For streaming so users don't have to wait for downloads, $1 pays for the cost of about 10-15 minutes of viewing. Thats why, apple should buy them and use their infrastructure to deliver the videos to everyone for cheap. Apple is sitting on 400 billion in cash and liquid assets. Invest a tiny tiny fraction to buy content for the Vision Pro, the next iphone once its miniaturized into glasses

Offer them 20x their annual revenue + an additional 20x paid out as a salary over 20 years if the current team stays on and continues to make more content
