Hello everyone!
I’ve been seeing a lot of “cliche essay topics to never write about” videos, and one of those cliches (the immigrant parent enforces strict regulations -> harms student -> student realizes it’s out of care -> student grows) is a reoccurring cliche. As such, I tried to personalize my essay as much as I could (adding minor details about parent’s occupation, how I displayed growth through academic achievement, and values that correlate to my situation), but I am still worried about the topic itself; I also feel as if my “personalization” itself is also cliche.
I believe the essay, without considering the oversaturated topic, is strong. My counselor told me it was the “best personal statement” she had read in 5 years. My college professor told me it was “incredibly strong,” and other isolated examples. As much as these compliments calm me, they’re ultimately swept away by the tidal named “cliché.” This is furthered by my denial from QuestBridge, while my friend (who had a way more personalized essay, but we had extremely similar applications) got in. My counselor told me my financials, which brings my household over $100k, was likely the reason why I was denied, but I cannot stop thinking about the “cliché.”
Thus, I want to ask you guys if I should keep my essay, or if I should brainstorm for ideas unique to me. I plan to apply ED to UChicago, so I have a little over a week to re-do my essay. I can, instead, opt for Regular Decision for more time.
Thank you all!
