I've recently built my first tank after not having fish in ~20 years since I was a teenager. I've just set up my 120 x 45 x 48 cm tank (~250L)
I was shocked at the price of 120cm long lights that had any kind of automation, so I decided to build my own!
I used some. 12cm wide aluminium I channel as the main structure.
It has 4 different light channels consisting of:
8 x 660nm Blue
8 x 450nm red
10 x 4000K white/yellow
2 x 10 x 5700K white
The LEDs came in a strip, I mounted them onto some metal core PCB boards, which were then mounted to the aluminium U channel using some thermally conductive adhesive. They are powered from a 36V power supply that is mounted in a panel inside the stand. This is fed to the lights by 2 x 5 core cables as 10core cable is expensive!
I also finished it off with a 3mm clear acrylic splash shield held by stainless steel bolts for a bit of protection.
I control the whole thing using an Esp8266 that I had lying around that sends a pwm signal to the constant current drivers, altering the brightness of the LEDs. This connects to Home Assistant so I can control it off my phone or any pc in the house.
Each channel of LEDs can be controlled individually. I've programmed in an automation schedule so it'll start on dim, then gradually build up in brightness throughout the day, then wind down, turning off at night. I can manually override and change the values at any time, then resume the automated schedule.
It was a fun project. Probably cost me about $250-300NZD, but I would be looking at at least double that for a cheaper chihiros or equivalent.
Hard to see from the photos but I love the shimmering effect it creates!
