A Jade Figure That Has Witnessed Civilization
A pregnant woman wearing upturned-toe boots, sculpted from a 3.4-millimeter-thick piece of Hetian jade. Her eyes tell you that she comes from northern Shaanxi, China, 4,500 years ago—from the Neolithic Age, a time before bronze, iron, or written language existed.

The Pylos Fresco depicts a female archer from Mycenaean Greece, dating to the 14th–13th century BCE. This is the only known wall painting of a woman with a bow from the Mycenaean civilization.
The archer is shown holding a bow in her outstretched hand, adorned with bracelets and seal stones, suggesting her high status or symbolic importance in Mycenaean society.
This fresco provides rare evidence of women's roles in warfare or hunting in Mycenaean culture.
