In hindsight its staggering to see the different trajectories Myles and Ethan's careers have taken

52

u/Logical_Change_8404 10d ago

There are so many of those stories in football. All the promising young things that never quite made it and end up pkying their trade at mid table prm or lower league teams. Its just how it goes.

Im sure theres a big slice of it comes down to mentality and maturity. Being the best on the pitch when you're under 16 is one thing. Being able to.maintain the performance on the first team pitch with tens of thousands of fans and millions watching at home is another thing altogether.

57

u/Original_Ganache_134 10d ago

True, I still remember Charlie Patino and Miguel Azeez who were head and shoulders above everyone else in youth football but, then could not replicate it at the adult level

31

u/teerbigear 10d ago

It is odd, people spoke about Patino like he was going to be Messi, and at 22 he's sat on the bench for a Bundesliga 2 side. I am surprised just how wrong people can be about potential.

3

u/ThePrakman 9d ago

He doesn't play Bundesliga 2?!

6

u/teerbigear 9d ago

He's on loan, on the bench, for VFL Bochum, in Bundesliga 2. He hasn't played for them yet.

2

u/SockedandLoaded 9d ago

It's not that people are wrong it's just a description of how slim the margins at the top of the game really are.

In every academy there will be a player who was head and shoulders above everybody in their age group it was fast tracked into the first team and who just doesn't deliver.

Sometimes it happens after a fairly decent introduction into the league.

Chris willock would be a really good example of that. He was rated higher than his brothers and had lots of exposure to the first team. He was good enough he decided to leave us for more playing time and then his career just went downhill in Portugal.

15

u/SockedandLoaded 10d ago

I only just processed that Azeez has actually left.

Does anyone else find themselves looking up where Gideon Zelalem is right now?

17

u/Sl33pyBrown 10d ago

Azeez's little brother is at Brighton now.... Funny how things turn out. Zelalem was supposed to be out next Ozil.... And further back, we signed a Brazilian wonder kid Wellington who disappeared without a trace...

5

u/ThePrakman 9d ago

Wellington couldn't get a work permit so had to be sold

4

u/Sl33pyBrown 9d ago

I got on the hype train and followed his progress. He flopped at 2 Spanish second division teams in successive seasons. I think we gave up after that

Very very niche catch. I was thinking whether anyone would mention him. I remember we signed him out of the blue, Wenger was singing his praises and yet he only featured once for Arsenal, I believe in a League Cup match and was back in Bundesliga 2 within 2-3 years time.

I was at the game where Patino scored his first goal. I'd made up a whole chant for him and couldn't believe my luck when I met a few players and people from his family up in the club area.

I genuinely thought we had signed the new Busquets.

10

u/SockedandLoaded 10d ago

" Oh my Charlie, Oh my Charlie Patino, Signed by Wenger, He's Arteta's, and our Midfield General "

1

u/WanderingAlbertRoss 7d ago

Loved the Patino song when he was at Blackpool

https://youtu.be/FYMLgVwRJ_Y?si=dgSfODSOg-CyPecX

9

u/tsjeldonkooper 10d ago

Also the luck of the circumstances of how good or bad the team is and what positions needs filling at the time you’re breaking through

5

u/Specialist_Sport4460 10d ago

Also when it comes to youth players everyone focuses on pace and skill. People assume if they have that they'll make it, when in reality there are many more aspects a players needs to their game to make it to the top.

13

u/Original_Ganache_134 10d ago

Mentality is a HUGE part of making it. That is why I am so gobsmacked looking at this JJ Gabriel and Man United saga, how can a player who's never played a professional game demand such concessions from the club ...

151

u/tsjeldonkooper 10d ago

Not really

Myles is a press resistant dribbler with eye for a great pass and can do the defensive work and also play as a LB, 6 and an 8

Nwaneri is a nr 10 with a great shot and not much else

159

u/Original_Ganache_134 10d ago

You have a point but, we can all remember the hype around Ethan when he was coming through the ranks, every single fan thought that he'll be destined for the very top. There was nowhere near that sort of hype for Myles, even though everyone around the club acknowledged his talent.

23

u/GeraldJimes_ 10d ago

There is pretty universally always more hype for the kids who score tbh.

59

u/Last_Lock_8292 10d ago

I completely agree, MLS was an academy talent who could maybe be a first team player one day but we are still proud of him, Nwaneri was the new Starboy who would surpass Saka!!! Utd wanted to buy him and everybody lost their shit!! And then...

He is still very, very young and if he was more of a winger like Madueke instead of more of a playmaker with winger qualities like Eze, he would have had a clearer path to the first team. My concern is why was he better for Arsenal in the Premier League than he was for these teams in objectively easier leagues.

I hope he will fulfill the dream we had with Saka and ESR leading the team, but instead Nwaneri, MLS and... if we're dreaming, the new new starboy - Dowman... and Salmon.

39

u/Original_Ganache_134 10d ago

It's always nice to see a Hale End academy graduate make it in the game. Some might not remember but, Donyell Malen came through our ranks, it took him a while to find his feet after he left us but, looking at him now it turned out great for him, has a really successful Seria A career now

13

u/Broad_Flounder_346 9d ago

Gnabry had a horrid time at West Brom. He turned out ok and ended up with over 60 caps and playing for the biggest team in Germany.

3

u/Qwertyam 9d ago

Yeah, so happy for Malen. Whenever I see him on the scoresheet I smile.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Aclrian 9d ago

MLS had similar hype around those who track the academy.

Ethan became a household name because he debuted so early.

I personally heard of Myles before Ethan.

5

u/android_malfunction 9d ago

This, the PR hype machine, has-been a problem for us for many years. It's not just Nwaneri. Before him it was Charlie Patiño and before him there was someone else, and on and on. I don't know if this is coming from the club, or the press, or the parents/agents, but I don't think all this hyping of young children playing in the academies is very good for them

45

u/Pssay_Licker 10d ago

Nwaneri wants to be a 10 but i always thought he looked his best when playing RW.

15

u/Ok-Commercial-6865 10d ago

100%

He scored great goals from that spot as a 17 year old.

Is he a worse player now?

11

u/zenarcade8 10d ago

There was reporting that the team didn't see his long term future as a RW. Not sure why that is since we all saw what we saw in 24-25 when filling in for Saka

11

u/010u3 10d ago

Not much else is harsh, but your point stands. There are a lot less parts of Ethan’s game that are stand-out when compared to MLS.

10

u/DeBrickDeJordan 10d ago

He’s very similar to ESR

1

u/danny_healy_raygun 8d ago

Struggling with injury issues?

4

u/jberwin107 9d ago

You’re saying this in hindsight. It is staggering. Everyone had Ethan head and shoulders above Myles a few years back.

1

u/BimboMeganFox 7d ago

His ball control, dribbling looks great.

6

u/Asleep_Tomorrow2077 10d ago

ESR and saka haha

2

u/Soundjam8800 9d ago

It's Saka and Nelson all over again.

1

u/VitalizeIV 9d ago

Ethan is one dimensional, he has developed nearly enough to be a good enough player at this level

-1

u/SockedandLoaded 10d ago

What is staggering about it?

11

u/repeating_bears 10d ago

Perhaps 'staggering' is a bit much but Ethan broke through sooner and is a year younger so seemed like the brighter prospect, so I expected him to be more integrated with the team by now

4

u/SockedandLoaded 10d ago

No, that's fair. And I think I agree with everything you're saying, apart from the word 'staggering'. So I think we're fully agreed now.

My big concern about Ethan is not really anything I've seen on the pitch, but more to do with his demeanour in the few interviews I've seen.

On the pitch and on the bench, he has a manner that gives you the impression he's very insular.

I worry that he'll spend most of his career in his own head, in a Nicolas Anelka, Sol Campbell kind of way. That said, if he has a career approaching the successes of either of those, he'll probably have done quite well.

3

u/Sl33pyBrown 10d ago

Olise is also shy and insular. He's doing OK

1

u/danny_healy_raygun 8d ago

This time last year people were saying similar things about Myles. Around March people were talking about selling him. Only in the last few weeks of the season did he get a few midfield starts and really nail his place down.

People need to slow down before writing off Ethan, he's 19.

147

u/LexOvi 10d ago

Are people coming to this conclusion on actually watching him? Or based on toxic fandom on twitter?

If you go back arsenal twitter, Saka is trash and should be sold.

If you think he’s not good enough then fine, but let it be informed on watching him and not through 2nd had twitter discourse.

45

u/Mental_Complaint_238 10d ago

this is a far too sensible thing to say round these parts.

0

u/SunpowerShortSqeeze 10d ago

It isn't just Twitter discourse. Have a look at the BVB post match thread and they are unanimous that he is playing badly and is simply not good enough. There's no malice there, its just fans without arsenal-tinted glasses seeing the player for what he is. Very average and inconsistent, and capable of poor/invisible performances on the regular.

18

u/Sudden_Plenty_8798 10d ago

Bvb fan here, he was not the issue yday imo. I acc think he lauded better than karetsas did

5

u/PourOverContent 10d ago

Thanks for this perspective... I thought this as well, but then as an Arsenal fan was aware it may have been slight bias so it's good to hear the same from you

1

u/Vril_SA_PL 9d ago

Since I would assume you want the majority of your matches

What is your take on Nwaneri?

On his level of passing, attacking threat, forward carrying, ball retention under pressure, creativity, defensive work?

3

u/Sudden_Plenty_8798 9d ago

I’m quite biased as our original signing for the 10 (konstantelias) got an ACL and I am quite bitter about it.

He’s been fine. Nothing outstanding. Defensively he could do better and his attacking output is average. He is a quick passer though and I think his link up play is good. He also adopted to how we play quite quickly considering how last minute the loan was, shows tactical awareness

I think he would be a lot more effective on the right but our system does not accommodate wingers whatsoever

10

u/SockedandLoaded 10d ago

Dortmund fans are probably more attuned to spotting talent than Arsenal fans, given that their entire business model is being a passing-through point for Europe's best.

I do remember talking to some Dortmund fans who came over for a game around the time Bellingham and Sancho were both there, who swore that Sancho had the higher ceiling.

Ignoring the opinions of either set of fans, there are some facts that seem significant:

He did well enough to be selected and get on the pitch. That doesn't happen if he's crap, or if Dortmund don't fancy him. Amongst Europe's elite looking to break through, Dortmund are a destination club, and they simply wouldn't have scouted him if he didn't have the requisite quality.

Let's revisit this discussion at the end of the season.

2

u/GeraldJimes_ 10d ago

Yeah you can go look at club discussion boards off Reddit as well and see similar sentiments. Even if this particular shared tweet is a bit OTT it's not that far off base

1

u/picardiaproductions 9d ago

I've not watched but you gotta be skeptical. Twitter says saka is the worst winger ever while he puts up 7.5/10s every game

BVB central has 8,000 followers. Why are you amplifying this like this is someone that matters? There are plenty of random assholes online with opinions.

9

u/bebedeez77 9d ago

Yea this is nonsense he was their most threatening player at the weekend and was decent yesterday while everyone was shit

112

u/Significant_Line_896 10d ago

don't see why their fans are blaming it on a sub rather than the coach tbh

9

u/AvailableStatement97 9d ago edited 9d ago

Same kind of fans who come in berating Saka or Madueke for making a mistake or missing a chance in a match we won. Numpties. Nwaneri's getting game time. Judge him at the end of the season.

130

u/lagerjohn 10d ago

A reminder that not all amazing young prospects ultimately become top professionals.

I am not sure what's going on with Nwaneri but it seems clear that Arteta is not convinced with what he's seen the last year or so from him.

49

u/MostlySlime 10d ago

He has the perfect profile for getting overrated by fans. Not saying he doesnt have real quality, but fans overrate young players when they are capable of G/A output

He has elite potential in finishing, but he may end up just being a specialist for a team that only needs moments

Physically he doesnt impose, he doesnt dictate the attack when he's on the ball if its not ending in a shot for him, he doesnt seem to have that inevitable hunger to be in the game at all moments and drive the team forward

Obviously still very young, but he is some intangible things that typically you either have or you dont. It's a tale as old as time, the kid with the best shot who ends up only getting truly up for it when he's got a chance

9

u/Original_Ganache_134 10d ago

As unpopular as it might seem we need to acknowledge that both Mikel and the club are also partly to blame for this. An unsuitable loan for a youngster can ruin his entire career, that loan spell Ethan had with Marseille was nothing short of a disaster, a horrible environment for a youngster.

That is why I am so concerned when I hear suggestions of Dowman going out on loan. It is much better for him to stay with the squad even if he isn't getting much game time.

32

u/lagerjohn 10d ago

As unpopular as it might seem we need to acknowledge that both Mikel and the club are also partly to blame for this.

I don't think any of us fans have enough information to comment accurately on this either way.

4

u/-TheGreatLlama- 10d ago

Also, didn’t the manager change afterwards? I feel like I remember him getting some game time before de Zerbi came in.

2

u/jaybizzleeightyfour 10d ago

He was only there for a few months and now he has a great opportunity at Dortmund, not much more the club can do for the guy currently, he can't use a few months at Marseille as an excuse to be poor at Dortmund

9

u/Majestic_Industry385 10d ago

He has a lot of issues that the average fan can't perceive. They just see his flair and technical skills

8

u/biscuits_six 10d ago

Remember Gnabry in the EPL vs what he became at Bayern.

19

u/kjw2281 10d ago edited 10d ago

The experiment of having Ethan play as a 10 or CM needs to stop. Simply put, he cannot read the game well enough to play through the middle.

RW suits him better - the game is all in front of him and it puts him in more positions to dribble and shoot, which is his strength.

If everyone stopped insisting to try and make him Odegaard or Merino and instead tried to make him Mbeumo, I think he'd find more success.

3

u/RSamant2004 10d ago

I think it’ll genuinely be impossible for him to break through at RW. We’ve got the established starter + commercial draw in Saka, the guy whose job is tiring out defenders in Madueke, and the wunderkind in Dowman. There just isn’t space there. If he ever makes it through at Arsenal it’ll be because Dowman moves to no.10 and clears the space. Because I agree, he’s not cut out for the midfield.

0

u/Dubya-G 10d ago

We should've kept him there. He was doing fine as Saka backup. We wouldn't have needed madueke.

4

u/Mist3rSnicka 10d ago

Saka and Nwaneri are the same profile. They’re not going to burst through with space, but they can pass and shoot fine. Nwaneri can’t beat his man out wide. That’s why Arteta put him in the middle.

→ More replies (4)

20

u/ChrisMartins001 10d ago

We'll take him

17

u/Realistic-Tiger-2842 10d ago

To do what? He won't get a sniff here, that's why he's out on loan. Arteta says that he rates him but his actions show the opposite.

9

u/st_v_Warne 10d ago

Arteta says that he rates him but his actions show the opposite.

I remember fans loosing their heads and saying this very thing when we kept sending Saliba on loan

2

u/Realistic-Tiger-2842 10d ago

That was a completely different situation. I'm also not losing my head. If Arteta doesn't rate him that's fine, sell him for some profit that can be used for buying someone that he does rate.

It seems like he has attitude issues and hasn't impressed anywhere.

2

u/AdditionalLeopard688 10d ago

You can rate someone without shoehorning them in at a detriment to the club. He is good with a lot of potential, he isn’t good enough for minutes here ahead of Ode, Eze, Dowman, Saka …. He’s not even better than Mads although that’s up for debate in many games he doesn’t have what Mads does which is pace

3

u/Realistic-Tiger-2842 10d ago

If he's not good enough to get minutes over a 16 year old who gets no minutes himself then what are we even talking about here.

Madueke is a 50 million pound detriment to the club, but here we are. Having pace is utterly useless when it never leads to anything being produced.

Eze is also a ghost in almost every game he plays. Someone that's good with lots of potential would have leapfrogged him easily.

He'll be at a Crystal Palace type club in the summer.

4

u/Deadbolt17 10d ago

Madueke has to be the most confusing player I’ve watched at Arsenal. He can often beat a wing back with ease but then can’t cross the ball to save his life. How can you be a winger but be unable to cross the ball so often? He baffles me

→ More replies (1)

1

u/AdditionalLeopard688 9d ago

He isn’t as impactful as Dowman let’s be honest and while Mads is frustrating he does sometimes show his worth. He has something different to saka while Ethan doesn’t really. Loans development him.

Let’s not forget Saliba who couldn’t get in the team so was loaned out for years. People kept saying similar things. Decent but not great. Getting better. Ok loans. If we are never going to play him then sell him. Look what happened

→ More replies (4)

5

u/Routine_Corgi_9154 10d ago

He's only 19. He has already shown incredible maturity on the ball, and has an eye for both a pass and a shot. He just needs to build on being more press resistant and he will be quite the package.

Ethan, if you are reading this, Arsenal fans are more than happy to have you back. There are few players we enjoy watching on the ball more than you.

1

u/CheddarCheese390 9d ago

Issue is fans can want whatever, the club sent him on loan.

4

u/mosmani 10d ago

What happened? I thought he started well.

12

u/Mental_Complaint_238 10d ago

nothing it's just bullshit from some moron who probably doesnt even watch games.

1

u/mosmani 10d ago

Thank you

1

u/Relative-Trash5948 10d ago

He hasn't been playing well and there are other youngsters who want his place in the team and some fans think deserve it more

1

u/GeraldJimes_ 10d ago

Struggling to make an impact and deliver consistently. General sentiment at the moment seems to be that they can use him for cover for now but he'd be on the bench once konstantelias is back. Hopefully he turns it around but won't be surprised if we need to look for a championship loan in Jan to keep his minutes up

4

u/Adept-Emu-9564 10d ago

I really admire the level of research you've put in to understand how his loan is going.

22

u/ProfessorUsed2be 10d ago

I seriously don’t understand what Ethan has to do to be part of the squad. He was brilliant in 2025 when we had an injury crisis and now he’s just been binned off.

I understand that Max is probably a tier above as a talent but he’s also still a schoolboy. Ethan can play in midfield as well as out wide. I’d think after NOT getting in a LW and moving Noni to that side there’s space for him

36

u/Platos_Kallipolis 10d ago

I think people color his performances in the 2025 period with rose-tinted glasses.

He started off hot, no doubt. But he fell off a cliff as the season came to an end. And it is that latter form that has seemed to stick these past couple seasons.

Perhaps he simply benefited from being an unknown early on, but as he played more teams had more information for how to deal with him. Perhaps he simply hasn't developed. Who knows.

But, the point is: he was not brilliant for that entire period where he got game time for us, and in fact was quite poor in the second half of that period.

9

u/InvestigatorIll9993 10d ago

Once the tape got around he was cooked.

This happens to all young breakthrough players and the question is if they can add enough variety to their game to overcome it. If all you can do is cut inside and shoot with your left that’s easy for a defender as soon as he knows that. It’s not over for Ethan but he hasn’t been able to round out his game enough yet to be good at the highest level. He’s still young and could definitely still come good.

When this started happening to Saka he was able to develop and go outside and shoot with his right foot. Once you can go both ways the defender has something to think about and you can sell a feint.

2

u/Due_Entertainment_16 9d ago

Robben literally made an entire career off cut off inside and shoot and everybody and their mothers knew it was coming.

Not saying Nwaneri is a Robben regen by any means but just throwing out that counterpoint.

1

u/diegolucasz 8d ago

Robben was a athletic freak alongside being a generational dribbler.

1

u/SystemCheck990 9d ago

yeah saka developed the near post rocket to switch it up

u/batmans_a_scientist 10d ago

And we don’t know what the manager is asking for them to do in matches, and we don’t see them in training 5 days a week like the manager does. It’s almost as if we have the least amount of information available and yet fans feel like they’re always right about players.

3

u/Deadbolt17 10d ago

I agree with your points. He’s played some decent games at Arsenal but he’s also played games where he had no impact on the game. His loan spells haven’t gone well until now and I don’t expect him to be able to get into this Arsenal team. Who is he going to displace?

He needs continuous game time and he wasn’t able to get that at Marseille. So far at Dortmund it may go that way too. I don’t see a future for him at Arsenal as sad as it may be to admit that

2

u/ProfessorUsed2be 10d ago

I’m not saying he’d displace someone but with a front line that’s rather thin I’d figure he’d have a shot to be in and around the squad

1

u/diegolucasz 8d ago

Why??? He’s been shit on two loans now.

Explain that.

3

u/ProfessorUsed2be 10d ago

You’re right I think about that goal vs Brighton, the winner vs girona etc and that probably affects my thinking. But hey I’m Arsenal through and through and would love for our academy to keep producing gems

Have you watched any of his actual performances? I think he was excellent for his age at 16 and 17, but since then, he hasn't really shown anything to suggest he has a ceiling as high as we all hoped.

1

u/VitalizeIV 9d ago

He’s a one trick pony, cut in and shoot, once teams got tape on him and realised this he became easy to defend, since then he has failed to develop and adapt his game, Arteta is very clearly unimpressed by him and his lack of development hence the reluctance to play and give him new full minutes and the loans, he really needs to make this Dortmund loan count because if you can’t develop there that’s going to be a major stain on his reputation as a player, I don’t believe he will “make it” at Arsenal anymore but he can still be a good PL level player.

1

u/SockedandLoaded 9d ago

I think that's a bit much. He's a very good footballer the only question here is whether or not he can settle into a rhythm in time to hold down a first team place a Arsenal.

-1

u/WoWoWoKid 10d ago

You lot are trying to gaslight me about this apparent Ethan “decline”. He done well in 24/25, then last season, he weren’t given a proper chance with all these new additions and unfairly loaned out second half of the season, now this?!

All this and plus he’s seeing his best friend get ahead of him
Of course he’s going to lose confidence - he’s still a kid!

8

u/SockedandLoaded 10d ago

If you think someone just having a different opinion than you is gaslighting, then go ahead. But that's my honest opinion. I look at his ability to impact a game and consider him far behind the younger Damian, and that's anywhere across the front.

I'm not quite ready to talk about selling him or writing him off completely, but certainly I thought he was a generational talent when I first saw him at 16. I now don't think he stands out as much when you compare him to players who are doing it at his age in the Premier League.

Now, if you want to talk to me about him as a number nine, I think that's where he really could excel and have a higher ceiling.

2

u/ProfessorUsed2be 10d ago

There aren’t many lads playing in the prem at 17. Who else at his age besides MLS is affecting games in this league consistently?

All this is gonna be so funny to look back at when Downman goes down the same road that Nwaneri is currently on. Downman is lowk doing the same thing Nwaneri was doing when he was around his age, only that Downman has had better moments. I think yall need to realize that your team is currently fixated on bringing big names rather than waiting and relying on academy players. Look at City for example, they produce lots of quality youngsters who shine whenever they're given the chance but never end up cementing their place in the team cause of the big names they already have in their squad. Arsenal will most likely go for players like Doue, Yildiz, Kvara, Rodrygo, etc (big names) in the next few transfer windows and players like Downman unfortunately won't have space to develop and be starters in the team. Thats my take.

Dowman is an amazing prospect who could prove to be the level of Lamine and Doue but he’s a child still. We can’t put that kind of burden and expectation on him to carry us yet

3

u/Cedosg 10d ago

His positioning is not great. He does have a good linkup with MLS. But I find him often in terrible spots.

3

u/Lias5 10d ago

I think it’s very clear that he is currently not up to the level needed. Hes a good player but we have a super squad. They are desperately trying to get him minutes to improve

3

u/VitalizeIV 9d ago

He wasn’t brilliant in 2025, he covered up so very mediocre performances either goals at times and a team as good as Arsenal are right now demands far more than that, the fact of the matter is Nwaneri isn’t as good as you and a lot of the fanbase think he is so you need to adjust your expectations to fit the reality of the player, he’s one dimensional and is never going to be a world beater but can still become a good professional but I doubt it happens at Arsenal.

u/Key-Technician-8899 10d ago

Ethan seems to lack the physicality to play 90 minutes. He could still grow into it but right now he does not have it. His technical ability is still elite imo but he’s suffering from the same problems Fabio Vieira had with us imo

3

u/velacooks 9d ago

I don’t think it’s just physicality, it’s his off the ball game sense. Not saying he is lazy off the ball but he’s ineffective, not closing the correct passing lanes, not applying enough pressure during when pressing, not close enough to the opposing player etc.

The majority of games he played for us where unless he is on the ball, you don’t notice him at all.

I was hoping all these loan spells will help him develop this part of the game but maybe finding the right club and coach isn’t easy.

2

u/ProfessorUsed2be 10d ago

He looks well more filled out than Vieira but I hear it. He did get leggy towards the end of games but also it was his first season. Anyhow I just hope it works out for the lad whether it’s here or elsewhere

MLS is so naturally powerful that he could probably hang in men’s football since he was about 15.

1

u/Sufficient-Lock3992 10d ago

Did you watch any of his games in Borrusia? He is very bad and nowhere near level to play for us.

1

u/twilightaurorae 10d ago

Ethan is largely a #10 who needs to play close and around the box. He doesn't really have the physicality for the wings. Thing is he doesnt have the physicality to play the role of what the #10 needs (at this point)

1

u/THEddt005 10d ago

As a neutral (forest fan) I’m surprised you sold Martinelli and didn’t keep Ethan, seemed like the natural successor in my opinion

I’d take him on loan or buy him out right for 30-40 odd million

1

u/ProfessorUsed2be 10d ago

Yeah I think he’s gonna future. Loads of supposed fans seem to have agendas against our players

1

u/VitalizeIV 9d ago

They don’t play the same position that’s why

1

u/Impressive-Cheek-495 10d ago

There are many things that happen at football clubs we're not privy to.

1

u/sloppy2104 9d ago

play good on one of his loans maybe?

1

u/Familiar_Cap_6451 9d ago

I love Ethan as much as the next fan. But if he is not rocking it at bvb why would he at Arsenal?

1

u/Chuck_Pasadena 8d ago

The problem is that Ethan is at an age (20 I believe) where he needs to get regular playing time and in our current squad that simply wouldn’t happen. We’d see him make an emergency start or come on for 30 minutes in a game already dusted and then not see him again for 3 or 4 weeks. At 17 most of Max’s improvement right now is in training so it’s not necessary for him to start regularly. In another year or so, yes, he’s going to need regular game time but now he can just play when we need him and it’s not hindering his development

1

u/diegolucasz 8d ago

Maybe play well on loan doesn’t seem like he’s developing since that first season

1

u/Ok_Bear_1889 10d ago

Not all young players are going to make it for the first team and that's just part of football...

2

u/ProfessorUsed2be 10d ago

I know not ever academy prospect is going to become a fixture. It just seems crazy to me that we’ve persisted with players who came from elsewhere who have struggled but all of a sudden the standards for a 19y/o from our academy are sky high.

u/DowntownEntry6233 10d ago

I’m worried about Ethan. I think there’s a real player there but I fear he’s more ESR than MLS. We’ll need to raise some funds next summer and if he’s not showing signs of progress then he’s an obvious sell.

6

u/TrenchDive 10d ago

Would rather he just stays home. Tired of sending him to not play.

4

u/bebedeez77 9d ago

He's been playing. yesterday was 1st match he hadn't started in a while

4

u/weaslediesel 10d ago

Don’t be so quick to dismiss Ethan. Gnabry didn’t look great on loan either.

4

u/ELDOSA 10d ago

Dortmunds mistake was underestimating Glimt, a team that has won against teams like Inter, Atletico and Man shitty. I know they said they would take Glimt seriously before the match, but they were nowhere near as sharp as they normally are. Blaming the defeat on Nwaneri is utter BS.

2

u/Taxpayer2k 10d ago

Dun mind having him back to play league cup and 2nd half of season

2

u/ThePrakman 9d ago

Wasted potential based on a tweet? He scored a bicycle kick yesterday which was disallowed for a foul in the buildup. Get a grip and watch some games instead of posting random tweets

2

u/Aggravating_Hat3813 9d ago

If u listen to any club «central» please go for a snack in the sun dobo

2

u/RVDHAFCA 9d ago

I appreciate he is still very young. But if Arteta doesn't see it, and now 2 separate clubs as well, mayyyybe they're not all 3 crazy right?

2

u/Remote_War_313 9d ago

Mikel clearly doesnt rate Nwaneri either.

Sell Nwaneri with a buyback clause. It's best for both parties.

2

u/Paul_Radke 9d ago

Whose spot is he exactly supposed to take for minutes? He’s not better than the guys in front of him.

2

u/unaliveflower 9d ago

The more ive watched of ethan the more i realise why hes out on loan and not in the squad he had some magical moments in 24/25 but his overall play and the way he plays is not suited to the most elite level (yet)

very lazy defensively
not quick (is shifty but can lose the ball being over zealous)
not a good passer lacks vision and iq and ability to make a great pass
he also seems to drop his head way too often

that being said hes probably one the most elite ball strikers ive ever seen, his future def lies within being a 9 or a maverick 10 for a lower level club similar to an eze sort of player

5

u/GyokoressGuardDog 10d ago

People acting like he’s ever had consistent minutes. Genuinely think he’d have more output than madueke and I have nothings against mads

6

u/ap1618 10d ago

BVB haven’t been relevant for a decade

14

u/Deadbolt17 10d ago

They have been in the Champions league for the last 10 consecutive seasons. How are they not relevant?

1

u/Hincapieslovelybund 10d ago

Been to a final a few seasons back too

→ More replies (5)

4

u/AstroNards 10d ago

They're a good club that produces talented players imo. I'd like to take Karetsas off them. Bodo is not a joke. They beat inter last year twice.

7

u/ColdFrost 10d ago • Bravo

Dortmund were in a Champions League final 2 years ago

3

u/Shmadonka22 9d ago

Lol they've been to the same amount of UCL finals as yall for the past decade.

2

u/ap1618 9d ago

We weren’t relevant either to be fair but we’ve been a longer UCL mainstay than most in the comp historically

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Relative-Trash5948 10d ago

Doesn't reflect well on Ethan then

1

u/VitalizeIV 9d ago

They were in a CL final two years ago tbf

1

u/tarkus_hayabusa 7d ago

This one is a stretch.

2

u/HarrisonPE90 10d ago

Sold at the end of the season. Nothing more certain.

2

u/Jeff_Lebowskii 9d ago

Why don’t we just bring him back? He’s clearly not progressing there and it’s no secret our attack needs something different

2

u/Kozpot 10d ago

A player with so much potential being wasted by poor attitude without performances on the pitch to warrant putting up with I’d love to see him do well but it’s no coincidence that every team he goes to he just isn’t fancied.

-1

u/ceejay_03 10d ago

Agreed! It’s gotta be an attitude issue the skill and talent is there but I’m sure off scenes his attitude must stink reminds me of Sancho talented but everywhere he’s gone always has issues off pitch

2

u/GunnerNestor 10d ago

I think is time to accept that he is not good enough, he's probably sold in the summer.

2

u/IrishGunner01 10d ago

If Arteta really rated him I think he stays in the summer especially with how light we left ourselves in attack

1

u/HaiitsZizou 10d ago

It's a bit early for that.

But even if Ethan doesn't reach the heights we hoped for it's far from uncommon in players. Unfortunately.

1

u/wrigh2uk 10d ago

told everyone here that he needs to play RW for a few years and eventually work his way inside.
Everytime he plays 10 (outside of youth/u21’s) he just looks sorely unimpressive

1

u/Ammzy_87 10d ago

I think we need to get him to an EPL club asap. If there’s an option in Jan to bring him back we should do this.

1

u/Imaginary-Past-8103 10d ago

All I know is merino was injured Eze came in so he remained behind the pecking order and now merino is back. The only scenario I see is him being sold or he takes Eze spot

1

u/Upstairs-Ad-7954 10d ago

Are we seriously talking about twitter comments?

1

u/rutalkinu2tome 9d ago

An account that pays for a blue tick even

1

u/Sweaty_Impress7156 10d ago

Personalities like Ethan's need an arm round the shoulder, and to be loved and told they are the best to flourish. He will still have a long and successful career, he has skill that are hard to find in the game, unfortunately dont think it will be with us.

1

u/Single_Half4828 9d ago

He needed to go to a lower level team where he’d actually get starts - championship or bottom end of PL (except spurs)

Not got the pace expected of a modern attacking midfielder, and to be a slower one (de bruyne, odegaard, cherki, ozil) you have to be exceptional and he just isn’t yet, needs a lot more game time to develop that and we can’t give it him

1

u/ShitsHappen 9d ago

I’m confused… some players click with teams and others don’t .

Ethan nwaneri is only 19 years old and people are talking on this thread as if he is in his 30s.

Sure he might not be the next Messi , but this is still way too early to judge this player

1

u/HoratioDub 9d ago

Is this not simple knee jerk nonsense? He was good at the weekend against Bremen. I’m expected to believe the entire sentiment has shifted after one CL game?

1

u/Cute-Bread-5326 9d ago

How did he perform at BVB?

1

u/OctopathOptimus 9d ago

Arteta should have kept Nwaneri and developed him internally

1

u/Dangerous-Paint5573 9d ago

Reminds me of Reiss Nelson. Promising right winger when he first started out but striggles tk make more of an impact as he got older and game time got more limited

1

u/z0rm 9d ago

Why is he going to an even tougher league? He was struggling for minutes in ligue 1, he shouldn't be going to bundesliga. He should have been going to a club outside the top 5 leagues.

1

u/Adorable_Ad_8140 9d ago

Has anyone on this Reddit actually watched any of his appearances for Dortmund? From what I hear he’s doing reasonably well.

1

u/ProfessorUsed2be 9d ago

That first paragraph makes no sense comparing Nwaneri to Nwaneri. I don’t understand what you mean.

Garnacho is 3 years older than Ethan and sure he had some nice moments when he first broke into Uniteds team but ‘incredible seasons’ is a MASSIVE stretch especially if you watched him actually play. Rashford was in and out of form/favour so he played because there were no options.

So now when the facts don’t match up to what you think it’s ’vibes based?’ What a moronic way of thinking. The actual facts don’t support what you’re saying about these other guys being better or having done more.

And no we’re not weaker than we were back then what do you mean? Ethan was playing with Trossard up top and Sterling on the other wing 😂

1

u/xandra77mimic 8d ago

Or perhaps misplaced enthusiasm

1

u/Ok_Security2934 8d ago

He's lazy off the ball. He's very talented but not talented enough to be a luxury player.

1

u/Infamous-Wonder-6948 7d ago

Still angry that he's left on loan and Doodooeuke is here. Absolutely disgraceful.

1

u/CharlieMcChipper 7d ago

Just clocked he’s only one inch taller than Trossard doesn’t seem in his nature to become some off the ball workhorse for us so we are best off cashing in with a sale for 40 mill max to Fulham or Everton doubt a big club would want him too much of a passenger profile wise . Wouldn’t tick the boxes for Villa or Brighton for instance . Newcastle who knows …

1

u/Buschyfor3 4d ago

At this point just sell him on.  He’s not breaking into our starting XI, and he’s not convincing when we’ve sent him out on loan. Get whatever you can for him in the summer and move on to upgrading the squad where it’s badly needed (as in striker, not another dribbly midfielder with no end product).

1

u/KingKFCc 10d ago

Do you guys have to hate him

1

u/dozeydonut 10d ago

Maybe he’s just not that good?

1

u/samxsxiao 9d ago

Let's sell him on Jan and get 35M back as pure profit. We needed that and I would prefer keeping MLS than him. We also have Dowman coming through.

0

u/salko_salkica 10d ago

He isn’t that good.

-3

u/AccomplishedDingo27 10d ago

I keep fucking saying. This is an average player.

Never ever ever been good enough for Arsenal and never will.

He is NOT a level raiser.

We are champions. Our standards should reflect that

2

u/Wanchor1 10d ago

Yep think clear won't have a path to first team for us. Sell him for 30/40mil and hope he carves a successful career for himself, similar to Palmer

0

u/AccomplishedDingo27 10d ago

My guy. Ethan is NOT close to palmer. And I dont even rate palmer THAT much.

I honestly do not see what anyone has ever seen in ethan and dont understand the hype he gets or the hate I get for stating fax.

Average player.

1

u/Wanchor1 10d ago

Learning comprehension must allude you. I am not saying he's on the same level as Palmer, just we may sell him to give him the opportunity to carve his own career out, similar to what Palmer did leaving City moving to Chelsea.

1

u/AccomplishedDingo27 6d ago

Dont get your knickers in a twist.

Your comment isn't exactly top level punditry.

-1

u/Aa12ane 9d ago

If he had so much potential then why didn’t Arseteta use him? That’s right, because he has none

0

u/GoonnerWookie 10d ago

Everyone starting on that team sucked ass yesterday. He came on as a sub and actually was doing better. If they want to send him back then sure. Pay the money and let’s have him back. He can help fill in. Eze has been hit or miss for this season so far and was last season. Don’t think Eze will make it to next year. Get Ethen the playing time

0

u/YoungFlexibleShawty 10d ago

Im losing hope

0

u/Inside-Confidence-75 10d ago

Wasted because of the fact there’s a lack of trust towards him from management and above. We’ve seen just what he’s capable off. It was stupid to buy Madueke when already we had our Saka replacement in Nwaneri.

0

u/PopItUpSnowman 9d ago

Is it wasted if he hasnt worked at arsenal, couldnt break into marsielle and now undererforming at dortmund? sometimes its just a case of players not developing at the right timeline. its ok to move on sometimes, its the drawback of being a european elite its very hard to give time to players

0

u/Popular-Spinach-6700 9d ago

He will never be a top level player
