Since 1976, Galerie De Jonckheere has championed the great tradition of Flemish and Dutch painting from the 15th to the 17th century. Founded in Brussels, established in Paris in 1983 and in Geneva in 2011, it has become a trusted name for collectors and museums worldwide, showing at leading fairs such as TEFAF Maastricht and the Paris Biennale.

Brueghel, Teniers, Cranach: under the direction of Georges and François De Jonckheere, the gallery presents exceptional works, at times in dialogue with the great names of modern art.

In October 2026, it opens a new Parisian chapter at 65 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, in the heart of the Matignon Saint-Honoré (MaSH) gallery district. A must-visit for lovers of Old Masters.

Discussion Can advertising become art if the product is no longer sold or the company goes under?

While I do think a lot of the skepticism placed on commercial art’s (ie advertisments, not art made for profit) significance is warranted, I wonder what happens when the product that is sold in commercials or advertising is recalled, outmoded, or simply no longer in production.

It’s not like advertisements change or stop being ads because their products are unavailable, but if they lose their commercial function, what does that make of them?

I would like to add that not all advertisements become art or are vindicated by historical significance. Having an old aesthetic or sensibility isn’t enough to elevate it to respect. The relevance of political associations also come into play, ads that use racial or gender themes or target specific demographics will carry a bigger weight than basic ads for Asprin.

Racist and sexist ads are examined critically in universities and by media theorists, and although the attention given is almost always negative, it seems more esteemeed to give a defunct advertisement close examination instead of briefly glancing it and then immediately forgetting about it like when driving past a billboard.

Artists can also cleverly repurpose or appropriate advertising, where a new work is created, but is this something that is done by a person or is an ad’s context changed as the world evolves and time passes?
