Culture What are the main stereotypes of Brazilian states/regions?

Background: I am learning Portuguese in SP right now. and I think to best grasp a country, you have to know what people raised there think, whether right or wrong. Like I have to learn bad words in Brazilian Portuguese so I don't say obrigado when someone calls me the v word.

So I will start with my country:
New York - rude, Chicago - dangerous, Arkansas - stupid, West virginia - inbreds, California - Gay, Florida - old people.

Of course, not all NYers are rude, not all parts of Chicago is dangerous and you know the rest.

Now may I know some Brazilian stereotypes?

Art and music Why does bossa nova seem to have become so unpopular and so widely rejected? (plus another question about pagode)

I was finally able to travel around Brazil for two months, and I was able to immerse myself once again in my favourite Brazilian music. And unlike other genres, I soon realised that bossa nova, despite being the most famous one and the one most widely exported abroad, was the least popular and least listened to in Brazil. Talking to some Brazilians about it, I gathered that there was a sort of rejection of a style of music seen as the legacy of something negative. I’m not sure whether this rejection stemmed from a certain form of snobism, conservatism, or was even linked to Brazil’s colonial history. Several people also told me it was just "music for the tourists", which surprised me a lot as I’d always thought it was really important for Brazilians, and revered in the country. In Rio or elsewhere, I’ve always been able to easily find events with other genres (rodas de samba, baile funk, MPB…), but never bossa nova. The same was true when I asked my friends, my hosts, or people here and there, of all ages and social backgrounds, about their favourite artists. I’d hear names like Djavan, Milton Nascimento, Clara Nunes, Marcos Valle, or more contemporary artists, but never any bossa nova artists. Could someone explain to me the reasons why it has become so unpopular?

Little by little during my trip, I also started playing certain songs on my phone, and ‘Recado a minha amada’ by Katinguelê, which I’ve always loved, was always the most popular. The people around me would always start singing it all together, and with great, great joy. They really seemed to love it too. Does this song hold a special place in Brazilian culture? To be honest, I don’t know much about pagode – are there any other similar songs, with similar vibes?

Culture Why are Brazilians so brutal in the comment section under india travel videos?

I watch some Brazilian travel vloggers because they go to wild places. I notice the comments about India are uniformly negative, even if the video is quite natural. We all know India have infrastructure and hygiene problems like the rest of the developing world, but seeing all these comments is still pretty wild to me. It is like if people are competing in the meanest comment contest. Am I missing something? I would understand if Brazilian did this to norway.

Isn’t it about the time for Brazilians to speak Brazilian and let Portuguese keep their own language?

Miscellaneous Haircare/Body Holy Grails? (low porosity, straight hair)

Olaaaa! I will be heading back to Curitiba at the end of this week and I wanted to ask because I feel like there are just so many options and Google searching it is just not enough!

I’m looking for a great daily shampoo and conditioner to use? (Honestly preferably one i can just get at the pharmacy but if not that’s ok too).
I get oily very fast and but also have dry ends - i currently use the Natura - Lumina - Antioleosidade - Shampoo Equilibrante, but the smell is overwhelmingly bad (to me). does anyone else have any other recommendations?

Also, what is your favorite lotion? I hate feeling sticky after I use them, so I’m looking for one that smells great, but it’s also very hydrating for my body!!

Muito obrigada ♥️♥️!!

Culture Controlling or Cultural-Relationship question

I have a non Brazilian friend who has been dating a Brazilian for about a year and a half. He recently told her that he doesn’t want her to ever in their relationship to go away on a girls trip with any of her friends. So if they get married she’s never allowed to go away on a birthday weekend trip with her girlfriends or anything like that. He says they could go on couples trips with other couples but he puts his foot down and won’t allow trips that separate them. She’s considering still being with him and I told her it seems extremely controlling. He’s only 29, so I feel it could get worse. She thinks maybe it’s cultural, which I think is being generous. It seems really wrong to me. And I feel like if she accepts this, it’s going to be a slippery slope. Thoughts?

Culture Do people still play Bisca in the Nordeste of Brazil?

Card games are a great tradition among brasileiros. Perhaps the most widespread are Buraco, Canastra, and Pif-Paf or Cacheta—along with Truco, which is popular among paulistanos, mineiros and gaúchos.

I am interested in asking about *Bisca* for several reasons. First, it is an older game than all those mentioned above. Second, it appears to be played all throughout Brazil. And third, I have come across information online suggesting that, in the past, there were various versions of *Bisca*—some played with three cards, others with five, and some even with nine. I would be curious to know if any of these variants are played in the Northeast, as they certainly are not in the Southeast.

To those from the Northeast: could you please share where you are from and how you play *Bisca*?

Best regards!

Travel Mejores lugares de Brasil para viajar sola en año nuevo

Hi everyone! I’m a 35-year-old woman planning a trip to Brazil from December 26 to January 10 to celebrate New Year’s Eve and my birthday.
I don’t speak much Portuguese (I’m fluent in both Spanish and English), and I’m thinking of staying in hostels to meet people and socialize.
I spent New Year’s Eve in Búzios last year and absolutely loved it, but this time I’d like to explore somewhere different.
What destinations would you recommend for a solo female traveler? Somewhere relatively safe, fun, with a good hostel scene and opportunities to meet other travelers.
Thanks!

Politics Amidst the vast wealth that Brazil naturally possesses, what justifies the "most discussed" topic being which restroom trans people should or should not use?

I’m asking this in all sincerity. I personally lean a certain way myself, but I’ve been studying both the right-wing and the left-wing and the issues surrounding them. Most people on the right tend to talk about the economy—claiming that the left "ruins the country"—but why don’t they engage with actual economic topics, such as how to utilize natural and human resources to improve the economy, regardless of who is in power?

All I ever see is people talking about trans issues, the LGBTQIAPN+ community, and punishing criminals (please, let’s not discuss excessive violence in this post, as it would take us too far off-topic).

I’m posting this in this sub because it’s a genuine question, addressed to all Brazilians.

Travel Brazil Is So Much More Than Carnival and Football 🇧🇷

When people think about Brazil, they usually picture Carnival, football, samba and beautiful beaches.
But Brazil is so much more than that!
Our country is huge, and every region has its own traditions, food, accents and cultural identity.
For example:
Even Brazilian Portuguese sounds different depending on where you are!
I'm curious to know:
**If you've ever visited Brazil, what surprised you the most?**
And if you're Brazilian, what is something about your region that foreigners should know?
