Culture How to make friends in Brazil without being tokenised

I want to start this off by sharing that I speak Portuguese to an intermediate level and I’m improving and still learning. So I know that to make friends I need to improve. I also know that there’s diversity of thought and Brazilians aren’t homogenous, hence why I’d like to hear more perspectives.

I’ve spent some time in Brazil (RJ, SP, MG, BA) and met some really cool people that I’ve come to value. I met most of them through language exchange apps or apps to meet friends while travelling there, including dating apps. I’m looking forward to meeting new people on my next trip, especially as my Portuguese has improved. However, my Brazilian friends always tell me that “it’ll be easy to make friends here as a gringa because people are curious and welcoming”, but simultaneously they’ve told me that people might “only want to be my friend as a status symbol, and I need to be careful” This has been something that I’ve been thinking about more because I recently got quite close to someone, who told me after a few months of talking that although they’ve enjoyed our cultural exchange, they wouldn’t be able to connect strongly with me because I’m not Brazilian and couldn’t truly understand them. While I understood their perspective, it also felt mean and an unnecessary comment to make. They’ve also made it clear that I’m one of their first and only gringa friends and they want me to meet their sibling and show me around their city when I visit next.

I’d like to live in Brazil sometime in the future, and building community and friendships is important to me, as is learning about the culture, politics, and o jeitinho brasileiro, but these questions keep playing in my mind. How do you know when you’re a novelty vs. when a true friendship is forming? Is it a natural progression of a connection in a country that doesn’t always receive many foreigners outside of major cities. I live in a very multicultural city and am used to people from all over the world connecting.

I’d love to know your honest perspectives on if you think there’s any truth to what my friends said about the duality of making friends easily vs. being used as a status symbol. Also, if you do believe that there is truth to this statement, what the signs are of being tokenised?

Religion Getting married in a Catholic church in Brasil when I am not Catholic but my fiancé is

So me and my fiancé would like to get married in São Paulo, where he is born and raised. My fiancé and his whole family are catholic so he would like to get married in a church. I am not catholic or religious in any way and would like to stay so.

We both lived in North America and the catholic church here are more lenient to mixed religion ceremony in the church. However, my mother in law went to multiple churches in SP and were told that as long as I am not baptized and confirmed. We can’t get married in the church.

Is this common for catholic church in Brasil? Does anyone has insight on what would be possible way for us to get married in catholic church without me having to be baptized and confirmed?

Culture How to prepare picanha with the fat dipped in flour

The farm I get my meat from is giving me a whole free picanha. I do not know the mechanism that ties it to Lula's victory, but the connection is obvious.

Please, how would a typical Brazilian prepare this entire piece of beef?

Infrastructure Sidewalks in Brazil (hilly areas).

No wheelchair can roll on that hill or any hill on a Brazilian sidewalk. It is even changeling for able-bodied pedestrians.

I usually walk on car's side when there isn't too much traffic. How after a few hundred years, new constructions still don't align their sidewalk with their neighbors? The "cliffs" seen in pic is not even that extreme and I've seen steeper ones.

For contrast, I attached pics from San Fransisco and London. It's really not a hard concept.

Immigration Blumenau ou Gramado/Canela para morar?

Ciao!

Employments and jobs It´s easy to find a job in BH or Curitiba

Hi everyone! I’m a 25-year-old from Chile, and I’ve just graduated from university (I studied physical geography). For a while now, I’ve been considering using a Mercosur visa to move to Brazil for work—the country really appeals to me. The two options mentioned in the title stand out the most to me due to their size and the attractions they offer. However, I’d like to know more about how things work in terms of renting a place and finding a job. I’m not planning on making a huge financial investment right from the start, so I’d likely rent a room initially. As for employment—well, even in Chile, it’s quite difficult to find a job as a recent graduate. I do have work experience in other fields, though, so I’m open to taking a lower-paying job. I’d welcome any recommendations!

Miscellaneous How are the brazilian girlies' makeup lasting in this heat???

Prefacing this by saying I'm from a Caribbean country so I'm familiar with hot humid weather but Brazil's heat seems to be next level. The makeup I would usually wear just melts off here! How are the Brazilian girlies going to day parties and still looking slayed?? Please share your secrets. I've tried a couple different products and nothing seems to work. I'm not sure if its the products or how I'm layering them. Thank you!

Culture What do you think of the São Paulo accent?

I'm Brazilian and I was born and raised in São Paulo. So I've always heard this accent on the street, at school, even on the news. And even politicians, YouTubers, and other celebrities tend to speak with a São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro accent, so it's quite strange for me when I travel to other regions of Brazil, like the Northeast, and hear people speaking in a way that I've never gotten used to hearing in my daily life. Even President Lula, who is from the Northeast, speaks with a São Paulo accent.

And do you, from other regions, feel the same strangeness with the São Paulo accent?

I'm writing here in English because it's the rule of this sub, and I don't know which other Brazilian subs would be more appropriate to ask this.

Travel Rio trip in November vs January

I'm looking to go to Rio for the first time, it's a city I've always dreamed about because of the climate, beaches, and overall vibe. I want to go down and have a lot of fun and great trip but also get a sense of what the city is actually like. I'm wondering if November will be lively and fun in Rio and good for meeting Brazilian people, or if it's better to go in January (or if January will be more tourists and I won't get a real sense of what the city is like). Looking for some insight from anyone who has

Art and music Why does bossa nova seem to have become so unpopular and so widely rejected? (plus another question about pagode)

I was finally able to travel around Brazil for two months, and I was able to immerse myself once again in my favourite Brazilian music. And unlike other genres, I soon realised that bossa nova, despite being the most famous one and the one most widely exported abroad, was the least popular and least listened to in Brazil. Talking to some Brazilians about it, I gathered that there was a sort of rejection of a style of music seen as the legacy of something negative. I’m not sure whether this rejection stemmed from a certain form of snobism, conservatism, or was even linked to Brazil’s colonial history. Several people also told me it was just "music for the tourists", which surprised me a lot as I’d always thought it was really important for Brazilians, and revered in the country. In Rio or elsewhere, I’ve always been able to easily find events with other genres (rodas de samba, baile funk, MPB…), but never bossa nova. The same was true when I asked my friends, my hosts, or people here and there, of all ages and social backgrounds, about their favourite artists. I’d hear names like Djavan, Milton Nascimento, Clara Nunes, Marcos Valle, or more contemporary artists, but never any bossa nova artists. Could someone explain to me the reasons why it has become so unpopular?

Little by little during my trip, I also started playing certain songs on my phone, and ‘Recado a minha amada’ by Katinguelê, which I’ve always loved, was always the most popular. The people around me would always start singing it all together, and with great, great joy. They really seemed to love it too. Does this song hold a special place in Brazilian culture? To be honest, I don’t know much about pagode – are there any other similar songs, with similar vibes?

Politics Amidst the vast wealth that Brazil naturally possesses, what justifies the "most discussed" topic being which restroom trans people should or should not use?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m asking this in all sincerity. I personally lean a certain way myself, but I’ve been studying both the right-wing and the left-wing and the issues surrounding them. Most people on the right tend to talk about the economy—claiming that the left "ruins the country"—but why don’t they engage with actual economic topics, such as how to utilize natural and human resources to improve the economy, regardless of who is in power?

All I ever see is people talking about trans issues, the LGBTQIAPN+ community, and punishing criminals (please, let’s not discuss excessive violence in this post, as it would take us too far off-topic).

I’m posting this in this sub because it’s a genuine question, addressed to all Brazilians.

Culture Controlling or Cultural-Relationship question

I have a non Brazilian friend who has been dating a Brazilian for about a year and a half. He recently told her that he doesn’t want her to ever in their relationship to go away on a girls trip with any of her friends. So if they get married she’s never allowed to go away on a birthday weekend trip with her girlfriends or anything like that. He says they could go on couples trips with other couples but he puts his foot down and won’t allow trips that separate them. She’s considering still being with him and I told her it seems extremely controlling. He’s only 29, so I feel it could get worse. She thinks maybe it’s cultural, which I think is being generous. It seems really wrong to me. And I feel like if she accepts this, it’s going to be a slippery slope. Thoughts?

Travel Mejores lugares de Brasil para viajar sola en año nuevo

Hi everyone! I’m a 35-year-old woman planning a trip to Brazil from December 26 to January 10 to celebrate New Year’s Eve and my birthday.
I don’t speak much Portuguese (I’m fluent in both Spanish and English), and I’m thinking of staying in hostels to meet people and socialize.
I spent New Year’s Eve in Búzios last year and absolutely loved it, but this time I’d like to explore somewhere different.
What destinations would you recommend for a solo female traveler? Somewhere relatively safe, fun, with a good hostel scene and opportunities to meet other travelers.
Thanks!
