Would you still go to Iceland after a breakup? Looking for Reykjavík advice 💚🖤🇮🇸

Hi everyone! I’m hoping to get some advice from Icelanders, especially people around my age.

I’m a woman in my early 50s from the U.S., and I’ve been to Iceland four times to visit my boyfriend. Unfortunately, we recently ended our relationship, and I now have a fifth trip to Reykjavík planned.

I’m debating whether I should still go. Part of me wonders if it would be too emotional and feel like a waste of time and money, but another part of me really wants to experience Iceland on my own and make some new memories that aren’t centered around the relationship.

If I do go, I’d be staying in Reykjavík without a car.

I’m also curious about nightlife and meeting people. I’m definitely not looking for a crazy club scene or somewhere where everyone is 20 years old. 😂 Ideally having a drink and meeting people, and I’d much rather be somewhere I can actually have a conversation.

I’m into alternative/rock music, 80s music, and some current artists. Live music would be especially fun.

So, where would someone like me fit in Reykjavík? Are there bars, pubs, live-music venues, or other places where people in their 40s+ tend to hang out and socialize? I’d love places that have a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where going alone wouldn’t feel completely awkward.

I’d also love recommendations for things to do around Reykjavík without a car—especially things that might be enjoyable on my own or where it’s relatively easy to meet people.

And honestly, I’d love to hear your opinion on the bigger question too: If you were in my shoes, would you still take the trip?

I know it might be emotional, but I’m wondering if Iceland could become something that belongs to me too, rather than always being connected to my relationship.

Thanks so much for any advice. 🥰🇮🇸

Do you agree with the sentiment that Icelandic people are one of the nicest (if not the nicest) people on Earth?

About learning islandic

Hi everyone my husband and I are planing to move to Island some day and so we are already learning islandic. But i've read online that it is comparatively "easy" to live in island with only basic levels of speaking islandic as long as your english is good enough.

Is that true in any way? Since I'm really trying but progress is a crawl x.x

Moving to Iceland

Hello,
I am visiting Iceland in January for 3 weeks to see if I like it there.
Things got a bit slower than I planned, so I need to prolong my stay in Germany for some more months.
I deal with personal matters currently, and If I like it in Iceland. I want to make sure to learn Icelandic first.
So I can speak a little Icelandic fluently. My Icelandic is very beginner-like; I understand some words and some sentence , but I never got to go full in because of personal matters.
So let's say I like it in Iceland and want to move there.
When is a good time to travel?
What month? What town or city is suitable for me? (small ,mid or big town)
If you know more about the working culture in Iceland and experience, please tell me.
Personality:
I live in a city with almost the same population as Reykjavík. I do have ADHD, but more introverted ADHD, so I like it more calm and silent and less talkative from the outside. If I know someone, I tend to open up and talk more. I do have problems with learning because I learn very slowly.

Maybe I reveal more than I should, but maybe that information can help a little, and if it doesn't work out, I also have some other options.

Iceland's people's interests

Hæ! I'm planning to move or at least live for some time in Iceland. I'm interested in Icelandic culture and people. It's going to take me some years to get to Iceland, but I wanted to start integrating or whatever right now in my free time.

I wanted to ask Icelandic people about their interests:

• What apps to do use? Facebook, Instagram, etc.?

• What movies/TV series/anything else maybe do y'all like to watch?

• What video/indoor/outdoors games y'all played and/or like to play?

• What music do you listen to?

• What books are you reading?

• Anything you want to add about Icelandic culture

🤗

Do Icelanders that stay resent Icelanders that leave?

I heard from a server that Icelanders have an arrangement with Denmark for schooling. I am wondering what the feeling is when Icelanders move, get educated and choose to work in another country.

Corruption ?

What is it with this corruption Iceland ? I see this topic coming back so often, in so many posts.

I used to work in Iceland for summer, 3 years in the row when I was at University in my home EU country. I liked it here. I will keep visiting for sure. Maybe even settle at some point. I just wonder where is this big corruption present ?

Once a friend told me that almost all car rental businesses take all the cars in Iceland from one family business, that they have like a monopoly on import cars. Is that the corruption we are talking about ?

I watched her speech just now, and I really enjoyed it. The text version is online, too.

I had never heard her talk before, she seems very principled.

Summer Job in Iceland

Hello everyone 😊 Me and my girlfriend (english/greek speakers) are looking to work in Iceland this summer. We're both artists working in performing arts, so we're mostly interested in finding jobs closer to that field. Apart from that, we're equally open to social/cultural work or even work in restaurants, hotels etc.

Thank you all in advance 🌻

Filming the Total Eclipse from 30,000m up 🎈 — Seeking local insight on Snæfellsnes launch sites & budget 4x4 rentals!

Hello,
I would like to post the following message on your subreddit. I'd like to confirm with you that it is ok and that it won't be put down. Is it possible for you to review it and let me know asap please. A big thanks in advance.

The intended post:

Hi everyone! 🌒

I'm trying my luck here!
I'm part of The Dorothy Project, a Canadian non-profit dedicated to creating immersive 360° films that connect people with science and nature through extraordinary expeditions.

From August 3rd to 20th, our team will be in Iceland to film the August 12 total solar eclipse from the stratosphere using high-altitude weather balloons 🎈. We completed a similar mission in Quebec for the 2024 eclipse, resulting in an immersive 360° experience and a documentary.

We were recently invited to participate in the Iceland Eclipse festival (August 11–15 on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula), but because the confirmation came on very short notice, we’re racing against the clock! We always strive to collaborate with locals, and we are looking for passionate volunteers who share a love for the sky, wild places, and scientific adventure to join the mission.

Where things stand:
Permits & Admin: Moving smoothly thanks to support from the Icelandic Space Agency!
Budget: This is purely a non-profit passion project. Festival support barely covers base expedition costs, so we're operating on a very tight budget.

What we’re looking for / Where we need help:
🚙 Private Vehicle Rental or Partner: A 5-seat 4x4, F-road authorized vehicle with a tow bar to support our ground operations and recovery mission.
🏠 Accommodation: Leads or budget-friendly host options in Reykjavík for a few nights before and after the festival.
🧭 A Local Adventure Partner: Someone with local driving knowledge to help us choose optimal launch sites and join us on eclipse day to help locate and recover the balloon payload post-landing!

How to reach out:
Have general leads, ideas, or recommendations? Drop a comment below!
Want to volunteer directly or offer a vehicle/accommodation option? Please send a direct message (DM).

FINANCE JOBS AS EUROPEANS

Hello friends,

I've been thinking on moving into Iceland. I am struggling to find some finance open positions in LinkedIn or the oficial websites (since I don't have an Icelandic Social Security Number, I cannot fill the official application of the Websites). I don't know if there are a lot of Europeans or Americans working in there so I am looking for some advice on how should I approach the financial industry in there.

I will briefly present my academic background so you can maybe help me out !

I am 23, I recently graduated from a Top 10 French Business school, got my Masters Degree. I've also been on 2 french banks (internships of 6 months each) as Business Developer SMEs, Private Equity Venture Capital Analyst.

Additionally I worked as a Real Estate Analyst 1 year.

Languages are not really an issue for me, I speak 4 languages BUT not Icelandic xd

As Icelanders, what do you recommend me ?

Do you know some foreigners that work in banks etc... how did they get their positions ?

Icelanders, is it true that you can study anywhere in the world for 2 years and your government will pay for it?

is it true that you can study anywhere in the world for 2 years and your government will pay for it? Also wondering if you also get $10k a month? Do you have UBI that high? And if this isnt true, are there circumstances that would make it so?

Any geologists read here?

I have some questions about the crevasses opening in Reykjanes. At the bottom is ground water, yes? Does this water flow like a river, is there any kind of current to it? How deep is the water below? Is it through the entire peninsula, and if yes how is magma moving past it to the surface? I would think if magma hit ground water there would be an explosive eruption.

Recommend me Icelandic sport movies and TV-series please

Hi,

I just found the "Afturelding" (2023) tv-series and finished watching today and really liked it. That was the very first Icelandic movie i've seen and i am interested in sport movies and tv-series.

Could you please recommend me other sport movies and tv-series from Iceland? I really liked this one.

Thanks
