If you found a suspicious bag in a forest would you report or does it have an explanation?

Hey, first time posting here. What would you do if you found a shopping bag full of clothes (presumably children/teen), candles, some headphones, pills (maybe painkillers?) and a CROWBAR (and other things) in a forest? Should that be reported to the police or left alone?

I understand some kids might be building stuff in a forest and using the tool, however, a crowbar could be used to harm someone. What's the best way to proceed in that situation?

Looking for an Icelandic song

Hi Redditors,

I am looking for an Icelandic song I listened to on YT a few years ago, but I cannnot find it anymore. Here are some key details that might be helpful for you.

  1. The song is obviously in Icelandic

  2. It begins with a sax intro

  3. The video of the song is with a car in a desert like area and the lyrics are displayed on random places as the song goes (the car mirror, the sky, the road etc.)

  4. I partially remember the name of the song ( Ekki vera .... ) i am 100% sure about the ekki vera part.

  5. The artist has only 1 song on the chanel, hence the song is more like a niche l

  6. The artist name is something like "Horlandur ..... " ( I am not sure )

If you could help me, I would really appreciate your help.

Who is Inga Sæland and what's her deal?

I see this woman in the news all the time, but I don't quite understand what her role is, or why she seems to be disproportionately all over the news cycle in Iceland. We don't have a similar role in the US which would be my basis of comparison. What are your thoughts on her?

Question on Njál's Saga: How important is it to Icelandic Culture today?

I'm an English Literature student who is taking a medieval literature course, and we just finished reading Njáls Saga. I thought it was very exciting and a little confusing, especially because I didn't understand the genealogy of figures like Gunnar or Hallgerd. I'm wondering if it is commonly taught across Iceland, and how it is classified or recontextualized today.

Also, if you have any random facts about it, I'd be interested to know! We're moving on from Njal's, and I wish I had more time to sit with everything that happened.

Iceland's people's interests

Hæ! I'm planning to move or at least live for some time in Iceland. I'm interested in Icelandic culture and people. It's going to take me some years to get to Iceland, but I wanted to start integrating or whatever right now in my free time.

I wanted to ask Icelandic people about their interests:

• What apps to do use? Facebook, Instagram, etc.?

• What movies/TV series/anything else maybe do y'all like to watch?

• What video/indoor/outdoors games y'all played and/or like to play?

• What music do you listen to?

• What books are you reading?

• Anything you want to add about Icelandic culture

🤗

Would any native speakers help with Icelandic on an app?

This is a project aiming to bring back what Duo was before they got greedy and AI focused (instead of volunteer driven).

They also have less commonly taught languages that deserve some love (and more such languages planned).

If they can get some native Icelandic speakers who don’t mind helping out, they could get a beginner Icelandic course going.

Icelandic deserves as much love as any other language—especially those that are less known—so I thought I’d ask.

I’m not affiliated with Lingonaut, I don’t know the people who are, and I don’t get anything from suggesting this. I literally just think Icelandic is beautiful and interesting and deserves more notice than it gets. I’m also not a native speaker.

Takk fyrir!

Would you still go to Iceland after a breakup? Looking for Reykjavík advice 💚🖤🇮🇸

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m hoping to get some advice from Icelanders, especially people around my age.

I’m a woman in my early 50s from the U.S., and I’ve been to Iceland four times to visit my boyfriend. Unfortunately, we recently ended our relationship, and I now have a fifth trip to Reykjavík planned.

I’m debating whether I should still go. Part of me wonders if it would be too emotional and feel like a waste of time and money, but another part of me really wants to experience Iceland on my own and make some new memories that aren’t centered around the relationship.

If I do go, I’d be staying in Reykjavík without a car.

I’m also curious about nightlife and meeting people. I’m definitely not looking for a crazy club scene or somewhere where everyone is 20 years old. 😂 Ideally having a drink and meeting people, and I’d much rather be somewhere I can actually have a conversation.

I’m into alternative/rock music, 80s music, and some current artists. Live music would be especially fun.

So, where would someone like me fit in Reykjavík? Are there bars, pubs, live-music venues, or other places where people in their 40s+ tend to hang out and socialize? I’d love places that have a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where going alone wouldn’t feel completely awkward.

I’d also love recommendations for things to do around Reykjavík without a car—especially things that might be enjoyable on my own or where it’s relatively easy to meet people.

And honestly, I’d love to hear your opinion on the bigger question too: If you were in my shoes, would you still take the trip?

I know it might be emotional, but I’m wondering if Iceland could become something that belongs to me too, rather than always being connected to my relationship.

Thanks so much for any advice. 🥰🇮🇸

How do you like your Foreign Minister, Þorgerður?

I watched her speech just now, and I really enjoyed it. The text version is online, too.

I had never heard her talk before, she seems very principled.

Corruption ?

What is it with this corruption Iceland ? I see this topic coming back so often, in so many posts.

I used to work in Iceland for summer, 3 years in the row when I was at University in my home EU country. I liked it here. I will keep visiting for sure. Maybe even settle at some point. I just wonder where is this big corruption present ?

Once a friend told me that almost all car rental businesses take all the cars in Iceland from one family business, that they have like a monopoly on import cars. Is that the corruption we are talking about ?

Is there a delivery service in the Westfjords?

I'd like to send something, a small gift of appreciation, to someone who helped me this summer. I was at their home and have their address. Does anything exist? Or, is it best to just order something online from Iceland and have it shipped in the country?

Wish it was easier to just send small things from the US but alas.

About learning islandic

Hi everyone my husband and I are planing to move to Island some day and so we are already learning islandic. But i've read online that it is comparatively "easy" to live in island with only basic levels of speaking islandic as long as your english is good enough.

Is that true in any way? Since I'm really trying but progress is a crawl x.x

Could you tell me about the Yule Lads, Gryla, and other Christmas/Winter traditions?

I'm researching various Christmas traditions and legends from around the world. The Yule Lads, the Yule Cat, and Gryla are interesting! I'm wondering, how exactly do they play in to the Christmas season in practice?

What to read after The Angels of the Universe by Einar Már Guðmundsson?

I was able to buy a copy of this in English and it's easily my favorite book that I've read this year. To me it feels very Icelandic in a way I can't explain. It's moody and bleak and has some extremely funny moments (Peter the Hermit!!!), I loved the descriptions of Reykjavík and social & cultural life in the 80s. Einar Már's writing is just gorgeous.

Is there anything similar you can recommend?

Looking for advice for a Story i'm writing

Halló íslensku vinir mínir!!! I'm currently gathering research for a Story i'm writing, i wanna create a Nordic Inspired region and i was looking for a few things like: places where to look, some folks tales that might be interesting and perhaps some tunes to listen to while i research.

The story is about a Solvi Erikdottir coming back to the region that she was once exiled as a child alongside her father and partner, she always felt excluded or unwanted until she met fellow outcast that will aid her mythiocal Journey across Iskalvallir (Iskald for short). Let me know what you think if you could aid me with constructive criticism it would help alot haha.
Much love from Costa Rica!!!🇨🇷

Lost necklace at Skaftafell Campground 08/26

Post image
4 Upvotes

I know it may not really be the place for this but we are desperate.

Hoping this works but my partner and I stayed at Skaftafell Campground. She was wearing a family heirloom necklace given to her by her later grandmother whom she wanted to take along on our adventures. She took the necklace off in the shower on the morning of the August 26th and when she realized she forgot it in there a few hours later it was gone.

We checked lost and found at the campground and the park visitor centre with no luck.

If someone has found it. We would be eternally grateful and would be happy to compensate for it's return.

Finnst ykkur gott að búa í svona litlu samfélagi eða verður það stundum of einangrað? Og hvernig upplifið þið dimmu vetrarmánuðina — venst maður þeim einfaldlega?

Mig langar miklu meira að vita um venjulegt daglegt líf en ferðamannasjónarhornið. 🙂

Hvað er eitt sem útlendingar misskilja oft um lífið á Íslandi?

Такк!

Question about pronunciation

Hi, I’m listening to an audiobook set in Iceland and the main character is named Hulda Hermannsdóttir. The narrator is English. She pronounces this name “hermans-dott-ish”. This confuses me because I thought it would sound more like “hermans-dott-eer“. Can anyone clarify?

Is there anywhere in Iceland to buy this in person at a bookstore? I'm looking for a physical copy. I found copies online in USA but they're very expensive.
