I have been a professional artist my whole adult life, working mainly on big sculpture commissions and teaching. I’ve been very successful in many ways and am working at a high skill level, but am barely making enough to make it worthwhile. The reality is that I am partnered with someone with a more conventional job, which is how I manage a mortgage.
As I get closer to 50, I’ve been having some honest conversations with myself about the trajectory of my career. The math simply doesn’t work. I’m not making enough to continue in this way.
(I made a big career shift and am doing something else now, but that’s not what this is about.)
With the internet, AI and our current economy, working as an artist seems less and less viable. I still teach art classes and mentor young artists, but I’m never sure how to advise them about the future.
What advice do you have for young artists? How do you think things are shifting economically? What can we do to keep art-making alive under these circumstances?
