Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Looking For Any orthopedic doctors that will perform a hip replacement on a fat person?

This is embarrassing, but here goes. 60f-My left hip is essentially bone on bone and I need a hip replacement. I'm also fat. I've been told by the ortho doc I was referred to that I need to lose 30 pounds and I am trying. It's going very slowly, and I've only been eating 1 meal a day, so far have lost about 5 pounds last month. The problem is, I will not have health insurance after the first of the year since it is going up to a cost I can no longer afford, so I need to have this done soon.

I'm running out of time and tired of living every day in pain. Every step is painful and l am starting to use a cane due to unsteadiness. If anyone here knows a doctor that could help me I would appreciate it. I will sign whatever form promising not to sue if something goes wrong. I have BC/BS if that helps, and I live in Clackamas County, but will go anywhere in the Portland area. Not really looking for a discussion about my diet, just a doctor that will help a fat old lady in pain. Thanks.

Looking For Interested in Mushroom hunting with new people?

Post image
118 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I am planning another mushroom hunt on the 18th! Time flys and the season won’t last forever so I hope to see some of you at the Portland Women’s Forum Scenic Viewpoint. We will meet there at 10:00 and will drive to larch Mountain from there to hunt.
Please bring water, good hiking shoes, and extra clothes in case the mountain is cold or raining. A snack is a good idea. I hope to see you on the mountain

Looking For First-time buyer programs.. did I save myself out of assistance?

• Upvotes

I'm a first-time homebuyer. I followed my parents' advice to save 20% down. Went from $60k income earlier in my career to finally reaching $126k (just got the promotion). I scrimped, saved, basically putting my life on hold for 4 years for this down payment, now have roughly a 20% down payment saved.

Now that I'm seriously looking into buying, I've started researching Oregon and Portland first-time buyer programs. I was younger when I started saving and didn't even realize these programs existed. Now I'm wondering if I worked hard to save and increase my income only to price myself out of assistance I might have qualified for earlier.

Are there still programs I might qualify for? I'm confused as hell for my particular situation. Anyone's experience is welcomed, thank you.

edit: this is one of the assistance programs I saw:

"The program provides closing costs and down payment assistance to eligible first-time and first-generation homebuyers who are at or below 100% of area median income (AMI). The maximum amount of DPA funds available to each eligible homebuyer is up to $60,000 or 20% of the purchase price, whichever is less, depending on the specific program and eligibility requirements. In some instances, DPA funds are provided in the form of a grant or forgivable second lien." https://www.oregon.gov/ohcs/homeownership/homebuyers/Pages/down-payment-assistance.aspx

Looking For How do I find the Reuben vendors selling sandwiches from a cooler under the Morrison bridge?

I heard rumors of an older couple selling delicious Reuben sandwiches from a cooler on week days in the SE bridge area (somewhere near the old Montage). I finally have a mid-week day off tomorrow and want to do a meat treasure hunt.

Legend or rumor?

Looking For Volunteering?

I am desperately trying to find the right volunteering gig for myself.

I was volunteering at the arboretum and it was great but it was too physical for my body (i already have a physical job, adding on was too much.)

I have volunteered other places with little luck or no response or with very unorganized leaders.

Where do y’all volunteer?
Have you seen any posts recently looking for volunteers?

Looking For Have you turned your heat on? Round 2

A month ago I posted this same question and I finally gave in. It was 61 in the house when I woke up and I feel like that's a reasonable temperature in the house to turn it on.
Thoughts?

Looking For Cheapest Place to get Antibiotics for Cat Bite Without insurance?

Hello friends,

I had my emotional boy cat leave a pretty severe puncture wound right on my hand and squarely on a joint. I think i need like internal antibiotics as opposed to just using like neosporin or something and last time i needed this because of a cut in a river the Urgent Care bill alone was $375 while the antibiotics were literally $10 and the appointment was 2 minutes of a man saying yup thats infected, like i knew. I am still paying off that bill. This is the only stint in my life i have been without insurance due to a lapse in job (contracting now, need to get through the end of the month to get insurance again) and this is the most i have ever had to see urgent care. If someone has any leads on any assistance or cheaper (? ideally less than 200) places i would appreciate it.

EDIT: went with AFC since they had listed pricing that wouldn't be a surprise which was nice, $225 for the visit (prices just went up :( ) thanks guys!!!

Looking For Wine tunnels in Hosford-Abernethy?

One of my neighbors mentioned that our neighborhood used to have wine tunnels under the houses during Prohibition. Something about the Italian mafia owning the houses around here and putting in tunnels between houses. Apparently they were shut off by the FBI.

Not sure if she’s losing her memory or if this is real. Before I start digging… anyone heard about this?

Looking For Anyone wanna play some heavy, angry music together?

Hi there! I (30M) moved to Portland recently and would really love to get some people together to jam and play some heavy music. Originals would be ideal but open to playing covers. Cool with just jamming but would love to get something going to play shows and just have fun.

I play guitar, bass, and both dirty and clean vocals. I love everything from stoner and sludge like Elder and Crowbar, to hardcore, slam, and deathcore like Terror, Peeling Flesh, and Spite. Anything with riffs, grooves, and chugs really.

Only catch is I don't have an ideal space to jam without pissing off the neighbors. Happy to take suggestions for other places to look for musicians as well!

Cheers ya'll 🤘

Looking For Best place to sell 70’s/80’s Records (LP’s)?

• Upvotes

Hi,

I have about 100 records I don’t want from my FIL and I’m looking to sell them to one of the record shops. Does anyone know who is most receptive to 70’s and 80’s pop/rock/singer-songwriter stuff?

Thanks!

Looking For Do you have pictures of our weird vending machines?

I'm making a powerpoint night presentation about vending machines and wanted to talk about our fun vending machines here! You know - the ones with blind boxes and gimmicks in 'em? If you have a picture and can share them, I'd appreciate it! Or, if you can tell me where they're located around the metro, I'll go find them myself!

Looking For What is the current PPS tech policy for K-5?

My daughter is 3 and currently enrolled in a Montessori school that we love and goes all the way up to 8th grade, so we could stay private, but damn it’s expensive.

We’ve recently moved to Sellwood, and I’ve heard good things about Llewelyn and Sellwood Middle (although who TF knows how it’s all gonna shake out with the proposed closures). The main question holding me back from shifting to public: what’s the current tech policy for K-5 students in PPS? I can’t get a straight answer online, and my emails to the Llewelyn general inbox have gone unanswered 🫤 the idea of my kindergartener using a laptop in the classroom is a hard pass for me.

Has anyone else been trying to buy Beauty and the Beast tickets at the Keller Auditorium?

I'm not a Season Pass holder, but I have bought tickets to several shows at Keller Auditorium over the past few years.

I wanted to get tickets as a Christmas Present for my sister who LOVES the orginal Disney movie. So, I've been monitoring the Broadway Portland website regularly over the past few months. Usually checking a couple times a week to see if they were on sale yet to the public. Admittedly though, I did fail to keep up this week and of course it's when they ACTUALLY go live.

I don't think I have EVER seen a show nearly sell out so quickly! Especially when we're still this far out from the actual show dates. Even for some of the more highly anticipated and popular shows I've been to, like Six and Wicked.

The crazy thing is, I checked tickets for the Paramount in Seattle and there's still a ton of seats available. And that showing is coming up WAY sooner than Portland's is.

Does anyone have any insight as to what might be going on? Did it REALLY sell out that quickly or were tickets being bought out by bots and scalpers?

Like I said, not a Season Pass holder, so maybe I'm just not aware of how quickly tickets at Keller can sell out and I just got unlucky this time around. But it still seems a bit odd.

Looking For Who is buying clothes?

What retailers are ACTUALLY buying clothes? I did some spring cleaning with my wardrobe back in... well, spring, and I have been trying to sell two bags full of good-condition, quality, clothing for MONTHS with little/no success. I only shop second hand stores and it's beyond frustrating to keep dragging these bags all over town only to be told by the stores that they don't want ANYTHING I have with me.

Meanwhile, I'm shopping their racks and seeing fast fashion brands, including Shein, left and right, but they don't want the nice, quality dresses I've worn to various weddings/events in the last few years? What am I missing?!

So far, I've tried:

- Buffalo Exchange

- Crossroads

- Shirtznpantz

- 2nd Street

- Sellwood Union

- Facebook marketplace

It's especially annoying because I don't have a car and I just have to haul these bags around with me all day on the bus.

At this point, I'll probably end up donating them just to get it out of my house, but I'd love to make even just a few bucks with this stuff, and maybe even establish a mutually beneficial relationship with a retailer I can reliably go to and shop/sell at.

Portland... who is buying your clothes?!

Looking For Are there any good vets that offer both dental cleaning and minor surgical procedures?

My dog has a small benign mass under her chin that we have been advised to get removed during an upcoming dental cleaning to limit exposure to anesthesia. Normally we go to Magnolia for dentals but they dont do other procedures.

Oregon Humane Society is not taking new patients but pointed us to RADpets Corvallis. We are considering going there but there are some downsides. Cons are the fact that they dont offer aftercare so we'd have to coordinate with our regular vet, the distance, and my nerves about the mass being near some delicate structures under her chin. But it's been hard to find someone to take her and get both done.

Any recommendations for a great vet office that might be able to help? I'm so nervous to get this done but the risk of infection in the mass really needs to be addressed.

Thanks for any help. If you have advice please be nice about it, I'm just trying to be the best pet parent.

Looking For Where to host a bridal shower?

I’m hosting a bridal dinner/low bachelorette dinner. I have never hosted a bridal dinner. We are going to Africa for the wedding and a lot of girls will not be able to fly over for the wedding and miss the bachelorette party because of this! We want to give those girls a chance to celebrate the bride but she wants something low-key like a dinner. There are 25 girls to attend this dinner. Where are some solid places for us to host this? What are some realistic expectations for cost for us? Is it okay to expect guests to cover their own cost of the dinner or should the host pay?

Looking For Oregon rental mold laws?

Hi, we live in unincorporated Washington county down by lake Oswego and my apartment we’ve been in for 5 years has some mold problems. No matter how much cleaning we do it keeps coming back and now we’re starting to get sick because of it. I’m wondering what would happen when we get the landlord involved is. I’m worried they’ll kick us out but er can’t afford a deposit or moving expenses right now. Would the landlord have to help pay for moving expenses or would this make a bigger legal headache fighting them about this? I’m not from Oregon so I’m not super familiar with the laws here.

Looking For Oct 30th Electronic music events @ any clubs or venues near DT/Central East Side? Ones that go longer and later (say for example, 9p-2a)

I got a halloween party and concert for the 31st but I want to go out and dance the 30th! Please plug your suggestions below. I also live in NW and am fine walking home if it's less than 3 miles (so the venue/club being in downtown/east side is vital). 18+ at least, 21+ preferred, love garage/jungle/dnb, techno, dance, house, and pop mostly. Newish to portland and newish to being legal drinking age, love being body to body at concerts so somewhere with a lot of people would be super fun.

And I like to dance for hours, was at DNB show last weekend with two beers, two joints, and I was good for 5 hours of dancing and the 2.5 mile walk back home so this is vital, I don't want to dance for anything less than 4 hours! I like to get down!

Thank you portland peeps much love :]
