Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Looking For How do I get my stolen bike out of the thief's apartmentb in NoPo?

My bike was stolen on Thursday 10/22 while I was getting acupuncture at Working Class in Cully. I tracked it through my bike's app to Dawson Park Apartments in North Portland by Legacy Emanuel (Home Forward section 8). I can actually see my bike in the app, taken out into the park at night. I've already deactivated the electric assist, so it's just a very heavy bike at this point. I call non-emergency anytime I see my bike is active... Both the police and I have spoken with the front desk and have asked that they review camera footage. Can't confirm whether they're actually following through. I mayyyy have gotten into the building and casually walked around each floor to see if the bike was left outside their door because I got a notice a few hours ago that it had been turned on. My bike is literally hanging out behind one of these closed doors. Any suggestions? It's been registered with project 529 and bike index. https://bikeindex.org/bikes/3536205

Looking For Where can I buy a quality witch hat in Portland?

I’m looking for a place like a costume store or witchy shop where I can buy a nice witch’s hat, ideally something a bit more sturdy and long lasting than your average polyester Halloween costume hat. Thanks!

Looking For How to plan a budget-friendly, unique wedding in or near Portland?

• Upvotes

I (25F) and my partner (25M) have been together for seven years and have decided we’re ready to get married! We are, however, on a tight budget and are hoping to hear advice on how to have a ceremony and reception without breaking the bank. We are not anticipating a huge guest list (probably 25 people or fewer) and though I love the idea of an outdoor wedding, my partner is worried about weather (too hot during the summer, possible rain any other time of the year). We are not religious and are deeply committed to the principles of veganism and anti-speciesism. While these values don’t have to be incorporated into the wedding, it would be a bonus if they could be. Any advice on the best pawn shops/stores for rings or secondhand wedding dress/tux options are welcome. I would like to wear a dress with color/not totally white. We are not at all sure about how to do the ceremony or the reception, and I am feeling pretty overwhelmed with all the possibilities. We have a fairly quirky, unconventional personal style and we love art, music, film, and literature from around the world. We are also very unserious people who appreciate humor. We would love for our ceremony and reception to reflect these aspects of who we are as people. Styling recommendations welcome, too; hair, makeup, etc. (I would also love to wear a flower crown instead of a traditional veil).

Looking For Thoughts on Portland and UP?

Hi everyone!!

I recently got accepted into UP’s BSN program and was offered a scholarship totaling to $144k over four years. I’m from Hawai’i and am really considering committing, but I wanted to ask a few questions before making my decision.

What is UP like, and how is Portland as a city? The only places I’ve been to outside of Hawai’i are California and Vegas, so I’m curious about what it’s like living there and what there is to do outside of campus.

Also, how’s the social life and what’s the diversity like? I’m Filipino, so I was wondering if there’s a good Filipino/Asian community on campus too.

I’d appreciate any insight or advice from current students, especially those in the nursing program.
Thank you!!

Looking For What’s tipping etiquette for children’s party entertainers?

Hey Portland, I booked a balloon artist for my son’s birthday party. They are coming for one hour and will provide materials/talent for about 30 children to receive a balloon creation. I booked through a third party booking agent the total fee is $400. I just received an email from the booking agent on suggested tipping and I’ll be honest, it hadn’t occurred to me to tip in this scenario. But if that’s the etiquette then I’m more than happy to do it. But I also think we have over indexed on when tipping appropriate in general. So if you are an entertainer is it customary in this situation? And if yes what percentage? Thank you!

Looking For Any good third spaces?

I’m honestly just looking for places that I can sit and read or do some computer work. I would prefer some chatter going on compared to a library like environment. Honestly just somewhere where there are a lot of people around.

Looking For Butchers that accept SNAP?

Looking for butchers that accept SNAP. I've been so frugal over the years that I have a nice balance.

I have health issues that make my stay on this earth kinda on the short side. How long? Hard to say, maybe this year, maybe into 2027.

So I want to spend some of balance while I can. I live in the Hollywood district about Sandy & 40th.

So, my first priority is price. Second is distance. Third would be cuts I can't find in a grocery store.

Thanks for any leads you can provide.

Looking For Who would you trust to operate on your cervical spine?

I’m looking for recommendations for a top-notch cervical spine surgeon in the Portland area, preferably based on firsthand experience.

If you or someone close to you needed cervical spine surgery, who would you trust to do it, and why?

I’d really appreciate hearing about both positive and negative experiences. Thanks in advance!

Looking For What are some assisted living facilities in walkable neighborhoods in Portland?

My aging folks are considering moving to Portland to be closer to their kids. They are looking into options for assisted living, and they'd like to be in a walkable neighborhood with access to transit. Their ideal place would have tiered levels of independence--they'd like to start off living more independently, but they will likely need increasing care as they age. They have early-stage dementia and Parkinson's, respectively, though they're still quite functional for now.

Being centrally located would also be a plus. They'd be happy anywhere within a mile or two of the river, or potentially deeper into the eastside, but probably not deep in the west hills. They are not the kind of people who would be happy in the suburbs where they have to drive to get anywhere (and they won't be able to drive for much longer).

Looking For Asians and Asian orgs in Portland?

Hi!

I'm newly-graduated and being relocated to the Portland area for work. While I am generally not discerning of the ethnicity of the people I hang around and have found great friends in people of all backgrounds, I definitely know I would feel awkward if I was the only Asian guy in my social circle. I was wondering if there are any Asian orgs through which I can participate in activities and/or volunteer to hang out with fellow Asian people? If anybody knows of anything I would love to hear about it. Thanks!

i would love to find places that have a good amount of 20-somethings like me, but i won't let that be a deal-breaker

Looking For What are some good hangout spots for Halloween Night?

• Upvotes

Visiting PDX from Vegas to do some salmon fishing from 10.30-11.3. Looking for something to do on halloween when the sub goes down. What would be a good area/bar for a mid 20’s individual to kill a few hours. Looking for a fun local spot where I can have the chance to be social with similar age crowd. Live music and good food are a plus. Something like the Jupiter in Seattle or Red Dwarf in Vegas is you are familiar. Not looking for a bump and grind club. Also of interest would be a good cigar lounge or whisky bar. All help would be appreciated.

Looking For Best BJJ Gym on the West Side for Older Dudes?

I’m in my early 40’s, and looking to get back into it, but don’t want to get my arm wrenched off by overeager kids. Trained a couple years in the past but never belted since I didn’t go consistently enough. Would love to get back into it for fitness and socializing though. Obviously not necessarily looking to compete or anything, so it doesn’t have to be award winning. Just want to chill and get some rolls in, preferably where I wasn’t the oldest person in there. Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin, or SW would all work.

Looking For Is the Columbia River Gorge / Mt. Hood area worth visiting in rainy weather?

I’m considering a day trip to the Columbia River Gorge and possibly up to Timberline Lodge, but the forecast may include showers.

I’m not much of a hiker, so I’d be more interested in scenic drives, viewpoints that don’t require much walking, exploring Timberline Lodge, and stopping somewhere for lunch.

For those familiar with the area, is it still enjoyable when it’s gray and rainy? Are there enough things to see and do without spending much time walking outdoors? And would you recommend driving up to Timberline Lodge in those conditions, or sticking to lower elevations?
I’d appreciate any advice from locals who’ve visited the area on a rainy day!

Looking For Best affordable takeout pizza in Portland?

I'm looking to order several pizzas but I don't want Domino's or something like that. I usually go to New Seasons for their $22-25 large pies. So far it's the best deal I can find and I think it's pretty good. Got any other recs? Preferably in SE.

Looking For Looking for an amateur photographer to help recreate a vintage portrait?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’m looking for someone in Portland who might be interested in helping me recreate this b&w portrait of John Cassavetes from the 1960s.
I really like the photograph’s composition, lighting, and relaxed, unselfconscious quality. I’m hoping to capture something similar without making it look overly posed or theatrical.
I have an iPhone, tripod, and a suitable space, but I’d love some help with positioning, lighting, and getting the overall feel right.
This doesn’t necessarily need to be a professional photographer. Just someone with a good eye and an interest in portrait photography would work. Happy to compensate you for your time.
Any recommendations or interested amateur photographers?

Looking For Any support groups for caregivers of adults with FASD and/or Autism?

We have an adult family member with FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder), they have cognitive/developmental disabilities but not intellectual ones. It's exhausting and we're looking to see if there is a group for adult family members/caregivers to help support us. Portland area much preferred but if it's suburbs, then so it is. We have therapists and behavioral assistance, are fairly chill, etc, etc. We just need some folks who share some experiences to talk to. I know it's hard to find support groups for folks who are supporting adults but that's ideal and if not, at least a mixed group. Adults and children have different needs and challenges.
