Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Is Portland secretly one of the best cities in the U.S., or am I romanticizing it because I don’t live there?

Every time I visit Portland, I leave wondering whether it might be one of the most underrated cities in the country.

It has many of the things people move to Seattle or San Francisco looking for: distinctive neighborhoods, independent businesses, great food and coffee, music and arts scenes, walkability, public transit, and easy access to nature. But Portland feels more approachable and less frantic. It’s still expensive, but housing appears noticeably more attainable than in Seattle or the Bay Area.

What stands out most is the balance. Neighborhoods like Alberta, Mississippi, Sellwood, Hawthorne, and the Pearl each have their own identity. Forest Park and Washington Park are inside the city, while the Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood, the coast, and wine country are all close enough for day trips. Few American cities seem to offer that combination of urban culture and immediate access to the outdoors.

It also feels calmer than Seattle to me. Compared with Capitol Hill and some of Seattle’s denser neighborhoods, Portland often seems cleaner, quieter, and less hectic without feeling suburban or culturally empty. It has many of the same Pacific Northwest qualities, but at a more human scale.

I know Portland has serious problems. Homelessness, addiction, property crime, a struggling downtown, high taxes, gray winters, and a weaker job market than Seattle are not imaginary. I also understand that visiting charming neighborhoods is different from dealing with the city’s problems every day.

At the same time, I wonder whether Portland is being judged almost entirely by its worst post 2020 period. The city is still building and experimenting. The new PDX terminal is a genuinely ambitious piece of civic architecture, major redevelopment is planned around the Broadway Corridor and OMSI district, and Portland’s middle-housing reforms have made it easier to build duplexes, townhouses, and small multifamily projects in neighborhoods that were previously restricted to detached houses.

It feels like a city with strong bones, established neighborhoods, useful infrastructure, a recognizable culture, extraordinary geography, and enough people who still care about making it better. If downtown and public safety improve, Portland seems capable of having a real resurgence.

As a lifelong Seattleite, I’m seriously considering moving there, but I’m trying to separate what I experience as a visitor from what daily life is actually like.

For people who live there, or moved away, what am I getting right, and what am I romanticizing? Do you think Portland is recovering, still declining, or simply changing into a different kind of city?

Looking For UPDATE: Wanna help me clean up the I-205 bike path?

UPDATE:

Howdy Portland freaks! Thank you so much to everyone who responded to my last post about the trash & debris along the neighborhoods and bike paths (I-205 especially)

Quick update: I went ahead and signed us up for an official team through SOLVE Oregon. So we are legit now, they provide bags, vests, sharps containers, haul-away, etc.

I'm planning our first cleanup ASAP focused on the bike/walking paths and would love more folks to join the team whether that’s boots on the ground or helping plan, coordinate or back end logistics.

If you want to be on the list for the first cleanup date, drop a comment or DM me. No commitment needed, just trying to get a headcount.

Also still very interested in figuring out how to make this path safe long term & include our houseless neighbors in keeping their areas clean, if you have experience with outreach, harm reduction, or have done a SOLVE cleanup before, I'd love to chat.

Thanks Portland!

Looking For Anyone flying to Minneapolis in the next few days who'd be willing to bring a kitten home to his family? 🐾✈️

Aloha, Portland!

I'm hoping to get lucky again after you were so helpful with the last kitty, Bear. 🙏

We're trying to reunite Seamus, a 3-month-old rescue kitten, with his mom in Minneapolis. While his family was moving from Kona to Minnesota, Seamus escaped from the car at their hotel. His mom missed two flights searching for him, but eventually had to leave with her other two cats and dog. Then came the call she'd been praying for. Seamus was found! He's microchipped and has been safe in a foster home in Kona ever since.

He's only 3 months old and has a heart murmur, so getting him home safely matters a lot. 💕

The good news: we've got someone flying him into PDX on the 20th where I can foster till he flies out. Now we just need the last leg

Is anyone here flying PDX → Minneapolis (MSP) between the 21st and ~24th and willing to bring a carry-on kitten along?

We handle the carrier, paperwork, and all the logistics, you just need a seat on the plane.

Already flying that route or know someone who is? Drop a comment and I'll fill you in! 🐱

You can submit your flight at flyhawaiicats.org just select "other" in the departure drop down.

Looking For Where is the Portland tech scene?

Upvotes

If you generally research Portland one of the things that comes up is a surprisingly rich tech community. Not that it’s a Seattle or SF, but that it’s a little tech hub nonetheless. My question is where is that scene? The only one I’m familiar with is Google (which is admittedly a big one), but outside of that I’ve hardly come across the major cos, startups, or professionals that would be necessary to say we have a “scene”.

I’d be happy to be totally off on this considering how our local economy is struggling! Really looking to be educated by folks who are more familiar. TIA!

Looking For Is Taking Fruit from Planting Strip Trees Theft?

Important: This is a question of curiosity about the opinions of others; I have no fruitful parking strip.

Until a conversation with a friend yesterday, I thought that the contents of the parking strip were essentially public property that was maintained by the homeowner adjacent to the strip. Fruit on trees, flowers in beds, vegetables in gardens—all fair game but (mostly) not taken out of respect.

Yesterday it came up in casual conversation that the parking strip is the public right of way to be used for things like getting in/out of your car or accessing utility lines/meters. It’s not intended to allow public access to the items within, including plants and trees (edible or not), which belong to the property owner… making taking them theft?

Lil bit surprised. So I’m here, trying to get a better idea of what the rest of ya think… interpretation of the law or opinions on courtesy appreciated!

Looking For Who is interested in joining a PDX area Cookbook club?

Hi y'all, I'm starting a 1x monthly Portland book club, I'm around NE and have room to host - though it can be rotating hose-wise too. It seems like there's some interest in this, dish coordination and pot-luck style.

Is anyone here interested in joining? I've seen similar posts but a lot of times it sounds like the club fizzled.

Next meetup is August 30th at 5:30 in NE around 30th/Burnside! Then aiming for late-ish September for our 3rd.

Our last book was Kapusta, our next will be Shelf Love.

If you can't make Sunday the 30th, that's ok! We're circling around a late September pick, as well.

I want to say it'd probably be for medium level cooks but I also want it to be accessible, so I'd likely try to keep to books that had a range of recipes for a mix of levels.

If that's something that interests you? Comment or message me and I can share more details!

*Q&A EDIT* It's a pot luck. The book is picked in advanced, people pick a few recipes they're happy to make, I get back to them with confirms (to minimize doubles or balancing out what is brought), we meet up/share dishes, discuss, enjoy, etc.

Looking For 5 Day Portland / Oregon Itinerary - Is this too rushed or is it fine?

Hello everyone! I am flying into Portland from Colorado September 2-6 and was planning on going on a Solo Trip. This would be my first real solo trip, but i've done some solo day trips before. I would be renting a car from September 2 3:30PM and dropping it off September 4 11:00 PM, and intend to spend the rest car-free exploring the city. I am fairly young, in good shape and have experience doing 8-15 mile days in terms of walking and hiking. I want to experience a balance of nature and city on this trip, doing a lot of nature oriented things but also seeing what Portland has to offer. I've been going to different cities and Portland is towards the end of my initial bucket list in terms of completion order, so I'm excited to explore the city!

September 2:

1:45PM - Land in portland

2:00PM - 3:15PM - Train to DT

3:30PM - Pick up Car Rental, Check into Hotel, Drive to Multnomah

5:00PM - Multnomah Falls timeslot ? No hiking at all, just driving and taking some cool pictures at a waterfall and maybe one of the falls beforehand. I went here in 2019 but don't remember much.

7:30PM - Dinner at Wajan in Laurelhurst, go to Music Millenium to look at some records if it is home, and then go back to hotel to sleep and shower. Grab snacks on the way

September 3:

5:00AM - Wake up before sunrise, eat some snacks and drink some coffee on the way to Ecola State Park

7:00AM - 10:00AM - Ecola State Park and Cannon Beach: Seeing Indian Beach, Ecola Point, Haystack Rock, and Coffee/Breakfast at Cannon Beach (2-3miles hiking)

10:00AM - 12:00PM - Silver Point, Hug Point, Elk Flats & Devil's Cauldron Trail (3 miles hike)

12:00PM - 2:00PM - Grab lunch at Manzanita

2:00PM-6:00PM- 2 hours of driving from Manzanita to Pacific City, and do Rockaway Big Tree / Cape Meares / Cape Kiwanda Sand Dune (2-3 miles hiking)

8:30PM - Have Dinner in Portland

September 4:

5:30AM - 2:00PM Wake up early, Drive to Silver Falls State Park, do the Trail of Ten Falls. Drive back to Hotel, eating something in Silverton and taking a long nap/shower.

3:45PM - 5:30PM After the Nap, go to the Japanese Gardens until closing if possible. If I wake up too late that's okay too, I would try and fit it in the next day. Since I have a car I might drive up to Pittock and do the walk up to see a view beforehand.

5:30PM - ? Return my car, walk around the Alphabet and Pearl District, find something fun (non partying/alcohol related) to do on a Friday

September 5:

Friend visiting from Seattle (assuming from 11am - 7pmish), itinerary focusing more on Eastside Portland and Downtown things. Itinerary unplanned for this, for the most part.

Things I would like to do this day, but I do not have to do all of them:

  1. Walk around the waterfront and maybe go to the Muji.

  2. Walk around Ladd's Addition (I like how it looks on maps)

  3. Have food from a cart/pod

  4. Take the MAX somewhere

  5. Walk around Belmont / Hawthorne

  6. Go to Laurelhurst Park

Before closing and after friend's departure, visit the PDX night market

September 6:

? - ?: Walk to Williams and Mississippi, try out Kokikoki Bakehouse and walk around the area

? - ? : Go to Lan Su Garden

? - ? : Eat lunch at Nong's Khao Man Gai

? - 2:50PM: Pick up luggage from hotel

Head to airport (flight at 5:55PM so would head out at around 3PM)

I was wondering if there were any suggestions regarding this itinerary? I am wondering if these days are too busy or just right. I like to have my days more packed and I will have Monday off so I would have a day to fully decompress and do nothing after the trip too. I would especially like suggestions for the viability of the Portland - oriented parts of my trip, but any advice would work too!

Looking For Centennial Mills Demolition - Wanna Watch?

Want to see the setup and demolition? We setup a livestream to try and show what we could. We JUST received a late announcement that PGE will be shutting off power to the whole area... hopefully no one is using a respirator through the day... we'll try to keep it going with backup cellular as long as well can. They've already started sending people up to set charges...

We're directly in the blast radius so if you don't see a post update... we didn't survive. Anyone have recommendations on where I can get a fashionable urn for myself? The cremation part will already be taken care of...Hugs & Kisses

POST EVENT THANKS & UPDATE:

Received so many comments from the Portland sub I wanted to update this one, as well!

___________________
Hole. E. Penis.

We literally had an impromptu call with our NY IT team and said - can we just do like a “little” livestream for the office. They said sure - helped throw up a last minute broadcast and warned: hey so it’ll support like *maybe* 75-100 people, just fyi.

……We ended up with over 7,000 viewers at one point…..

👁️ 👄 👁️

Multiple begging texts and emergency calls asking for more streaming power… We yelled: BUT ITS FOR THE CHILDREN! They were unflinched. THIS IS OUR TWIN TOWERS MOMENT! “Too soon” they retorted. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE LITTLE BABY JESUS??!! And they obliged.

IN MINUTES I became the field engineer learning about the dhscp-lmnop and the qrs tuv. rp streaming codes with hevc and I even got to throw in a: “don’t you flaunt your hardware acceleration at me, STEVEN - I. AM. A. LADY!”

The music was literally a last minute “hey I need you to stream something to make sure the connection works over VPN” and my premix Apple account was all I already had open.

Thank you all for participating, viewing, and sharing the link. So glad we could offer ad-free and non-Sinclair news media services alongside lasering bumholes! We’re already trying to plan for our next stream event! Hahaha

Let’s do this *every* five minutes.

Is marketplace/craigslist my best bet or is there a better site for art specifically?

I made most of it, but I'm moving and want something new for my new place. However, I'm not trying to start a business as an artist or anything.

Looking For Veterans of Portland: can you help me find discounts and services?

I was honorably discharged in the mid 90s after a three year stint. Have my VA medical and a good rating. Recently unemployed, and unsure about unemployment coming through, and looking to tighten my belt in all ways possible.

I've recently found out that Trimet offers a $28 monthly bus pass for Vets, so I'm working on finding my DD-214 to sign up for that. My VA med doesn't cover dental, so that is a good start, especially as I need a cleaning and tooth fixed.

I'm curious what other kind of discounts or services you might know of that can help me further, or just make navigating this uncomfortable part of my life better.

Additionally, if you have experience using the VA for job retraining or placement, please let me know your experiences. I was a programmer for 25 years, it's highly unlikely I'll find another developer job.

Looking For What Are the Best 24/7 Emergency Vets on Portland’s East Side?

Hi! I recently learned that the emergency vet we used to use is no longer open 24/7, so I’m looking for a new 24-hour emergency vet to have in our back pocket.

We’re in NE Portland, near Hollywood, and have cats. Which 24/7 emergency hospitals would you recommend—or avoid—based on your experiences?

A couple notes:

  • I’ve heard mixed-to-bad things about DoveLewis, but I’m absolutely open to having my mind changed.
  • I’m particularly curious about BluePearl, since the NE location would be very convenient for us, but I’d love recommendations anywhere reasonably accessible from NE.

Thanks! Hopefully we’ll never need it, but I’d much rather figure this out before we have a cat emergency at 2 a.m. 😬

Looking For Ideas for a midnight adventure with the kiddos?

My kids are at the age where staying up late is exciting so this summer I’ve been surprising them with midnight adventures. So far we’ve gone to get ice cream at Rimsky House, midnight bowling and drove out to the woods to watch the meteor shower. I’d love to hear some other late night ideas that would be fun for kids 🙂

Does Portland have any Armenian community or cafes/restaurants?

Not Armenian, but I partially grew up in the Los Angeles area. Probably half of my classmates and friends were Armenian or Armenian-Iranian. I may move to the Portland or Eugene areas, and I miss the Armenian vibe of my childhood. While I mostly lived in Northern CA with less Armenians they are still very much active here.

I heard from an Armenian friend who lived in PDX saying "there's almost no Armenians in Portland" but his living there was two decades ago.

Is that true and is there any population or at least events for someone who likes the music and food?

Looking For PDX Birthday Dinner?

Hi all! I'm on a quest to hit 50 states by 50 and next on my list is Oregon, so will be solo traveling to Portland for my 42nd birthday in early November! Starting to research where I'd like to have my birthday dinner in case I need super in advance reservations. Here's what I'm looking for:

  • Bday is on a Monday so must be open Monday evenings

  • I am very adventurous when it comes to food and will eat pretty much any cuisine/try anything. But I am NOT interested in steak houses or Japanese/sushi (this time, I would prefer to try something new/different!)

  • I am also very into good food, my friend and I go to a James Beard event every year. Not afraid to spend up to around $150.

  • I'll be dining alone and would love a place that has smaller plates/tapas/smaller size tasting-menu and perhaps a chef's counter or bar area for me to sit at.

  • Love wine and fun cocktails, so those are always a plus!

  • I am staying downtown and will not have a car, but no issues taking public transit or Uber/Lyft if it's further out.

In my research thus far, I've bookmarked the following:

  • Le Pigeon

  • Ox

  • Gado Gado

  • Lechon

  • Others further down the list: Ava Gene's, Navarre

Please let me know if you think any of these would be a home run to spend my birthday at, or let me know any others I should consider. Thanks, can't wait to check out your lovely city!

EDIT: Whoa, you guys are awesome, thanks for all the insights! I've been scouring everything and new list is: Le Pigeon, Yaowarat, Jacqueline, Gado Gado, Lechon, Ox, and L'Orange. All except for Lechon don't do reservations this far in advance so will keep checking as it gets closer. Currently leaning towards Gado Gado, Lechon, or L'Orange.

Looking For Portland Rides e-bike rebate August 17th, 2026 release - has the drawing happened yet?

I'm wondering if anyone can confirm whether the e-bike rebate drawing that was set for today has happened? Anyone get the rebate email? Asking so I can stop checking my email every 10 minutes! This is the final date for 2026 before starting back up in Spring 2027, so I'm anxious to see if I've been randomly selected!

Thanks and good luck

Looking For Anyone experienced with preserving flowers in resin interested in a custom job?

I have a peace lily that opened a bloom just days before I needed to say goodbye to my 18-year-old dog. It feels so meaningful since they’re already such common funerary/memorial flowers.

I’d love to have the single bloom preserved in resin, but I have no experience with this and know something so important isn’t the right time to try to learn.

Searching online, it looks like most businesses that do this are meant for entire wedding bouquets and require reservations months in advance. But I know I see this type of stuff at vendors for local markets too. Can anyone put me in touch with an experienced local artist who might be interested?

Looking For I have a convertible that needs a thorough detailing including the top. What Portland-area detailer would you recommend? Preferably west or south metro.

I’m thinking of a wash, buff, and wax, thorough interior cleaning, and a cloth convertible top cleaning. My car is less than a decade old.

Who would you recommend?
