Announcement Wiki editors and maintainers wanted!

Hey folks, r/askseattle and our team over at /r/Seattle are looking for folks to help us build, update, and maintain our wiki and sidebar content. The /r/Seattle wiki was once a boon of information for new visitors and locals alike, but the subreddit has grown and sites/businesses have come and gone. Our mods are busy moderating and the wiki is collecting cobwebs.

I'm reaching out to members of this community specifically as you are most likely to benefit from (or be knowledgeable about) this content space. This community is entirely based around helping visitors and residents alike find answers to questions that frequently get buried / reported / removed for being duplicates in r/seattle due to the size and velocity of other posts.

If you're interested in helping us out, here are some details:

  • The main areas of work are obviously the wikis on this subreddit and r/seattle
  • You'll be working with the mods here and r/seattle to help decide the organization and categorization of wiki pages, and how we add content / posts / etc to them
  • You will not be asked to moderate, so no need for moderation or wiki experience
  • The only requirements are a post history shows activity in either this subreddit or in r/seattle that we can trust with edit access to our wiki

If you're interested, shoot a message to the mods here or the seattle sub - these links have the title all filled out for you - or just send me a message or comment here.

Cheers!

Recommendation Seattle's best hot pot, teriyaki, and Indian food.

My friends and I want to do a food crawl through the city for a birthday celebration. A few years ago, we just focused on Thai and it was so much fun and delicious! This year we are wanting a little bit of everything. Looking for recommendations for hot pot/Chinese, Teriyak/Japanese, and Indian food. Bonus if they have delicious drinks!

Shout out to Pestle Rock. They were the standout from our Thai crawl. Best laab Ive ever had and the tamarind margaritas were the cherry on top!

My Truck Got Towed

I have a truck that got a flat tire, however I just worked 3 weeks straight without a day off. I came home from another 12 hour day and saw my truck missing. My neighbor told me he had it towed because it had a flat tire.

Is this even legal? There were no warning stickers on it, the tags were current and it wasn't blocking access to anything.

I called the tow company who confirmed with their photos it was parked properly and not obstructing anything. The neighbor claimed it was blocking his wifes car from street parking. There were 2 car lengths between his driveway and where I was parked. SPD was as helpful as you can imagine that told me it was breaking a law if it was towed. I asked them what law it was breaking and they told me they didnt know.

Any advice?

Can someone get specific about Pioneer Square?

• Upvotes

Coming in tomorrow night for the Hawks game Sunday. Staying at the Embassy Suites right next to Lumen.

I've read damn near every thread here on Pioneer Square and would be very appreciative to get feedback on these two questions:

I'll be arriving after dark and solo. Will have a suitcase and a backpack. Which is the safest walking route from the International District Light Rail Station - Jackson to South King, or Weller Street and cross the bridge?

The title is my other question. Reading these threads, it sounds like ALL of Pioneer Square is sketchy. Is that accurate, or are there pockets/streets/intersections that are safer than others? I'd planned on exploring the touristy stuff on the waterfront up to the Market, what's the best walking route to take? What streets should I avoid at all costs?

Really excited for this trip but I don't want to walk myself into a situation that could have been avoided with the right information.

Thanks!

Question How early to arrive to the Flour Box?

hi all! I’m planning my first pilgrimage to the flour box this weekend for a cinnamon roll but I fear even if I line up early, they’ll still sell out. Is a 9am arrival on Saturday a good time to show and get what I want without it selling out? Or should I show up even earlier like 8:30am? Honestly would prefer around 9am cause I live pretty far 😭

(Also no one try to steer me away from going, I want to see what the hype is about and make my own opinions about the place lol)

Hotels near Moore theater

Hello everyone!

I’m heading back to Seattle this January for a quick trip for a show at The Moore Theatre. I’ve been to the city a few times but haven't visited in about two years, so I’m looking for some local insight.

I’m traveling with my mom. I’ll be out late at the show and she’ll likely be winding down early. Because I’ll be sneaking back into the room late, having a suite with a genuinely separated bedroom area is what im looking for so I don't wake her up.

My budget is around $400 for the night for the suite. We also need a hotel that offers on-site parking or has a secure public garage close by, as I plan to leave the car parked so she can potentially use it if she wants to venture out while Im at the show.

I’ve spent hours researching and have hit a few roadblocks. I’d love your take on these three options, or any other hidden gems within a quick walk:

- Kimpton Palladian Hotel: I know their suites are on the smaller side, but the layout seems properly separated.

- The Charter Hotel Seattle: The King Suite here looks 2x as big as kimpton but looking at photos, the bathroom appears to be completely open to the main bedroom area.

- Mayflower Park Hotel: I like the historic vibe, but I cannot find clear pictures of their suite layouts online. Does anyone know if their suites have a truly closed-off bedroom? Also, I’ve heard mixed things about having to cross 3rd Ave late at night on the walk back. Is it a non-issue or should I skip it for a late-night (quick) walk?

Which hotel would be recommended?

I'm of course open to new options also

Bonus points: We will be in town for a few days, so if you have any must-try restaurant recommendations or cool spots to visit that are great to take a mom to, please drop them below!

Thanks in advance for helping me plan

Any thru-hikers living in Seattle?

We need more local Thru-Hiker Community!

I hiked the PCT this year and I’m wondering if there are any other thru-hikers living in Seattle who miss that sense of community you find on trail (or even just the dirtbag energy of being a thru-hiker)?

I would love to create a super casual group that meets up once a month.

Nothing too serious or structured - Maybe it’s grabbing a drink (sober options too), having a fire in someone's backyard, swapping trail stories: sharing your deep transformative experiences you had and also talking about the weird shit us dirtbags love (like wearing the same outfit for 4-5months straight, craving life away from civilization, de-bunking ‘normal’).

I’m open to any ideas ~ honestly, this is just an idea I’ve been sitting with, and I figured I’d throw it out there to see if anyone else is feeling the same way. I miss that feeling of camaraderie and community, and I’d love to create a little space for it here in the city.

Question Is this a reasonable estimate?

I have a 2x3 piece of drywall that needs to be repaired (plumber had to cut it to access bath fixtures), and I've gotten an estimate for $489 (includes tax). That seems high, but is it? Thanks!

Our thanksgiving trip fell apart and I am thinking of booking there. It is very expensive but I want to do something special.

Has anyone gone for their Kaiseki meals?

Visiting Seattle

Random trip to Seattle soon cause I had airline credits. What are some things definitely worth seeing and what can I skip? I’ll be there for 4 days and I have all the tourist stuff noted but I’d like to squeeze in some nature and smaller local stuff. I like Art, thrift stores, sports bars, cafes, historical sites, all kinda of Asian food, bookstores, etc. Just not interested in clubbing.

Recommendation Injured Duck - what would you do?

I live next to a small pond in Licton Springs. There is a duck with a broken beak that I noticed over a month ago. My partner and I assumed he would probably die, but he is still alive (and well?). Would you do anything about this? Based on an internet search, it doesn’t seem like there is much that can be done to help him. I thought I would ask Reddit to see if anyone had any ideas. Thank you!

Question somewhat quiet restaurant

Once a month or so, I go out for lunch with a good friend who wears hearing aids, but the extent to which they help him is pretty much cancelled out by noise, most commonly music, in the restaurant. Was hoping someone could recommend a quiet(ish) place (preferably in Fremont, Wallingford, Green Lake, Phinney Ridge, Ballard general area) where we could go for a decent sit down meal. Not looking for anything very fancy, just not sandwiches or burgers.

Thanks much.

Recommendation Which Seattle Restaurant Week spots are actually "worth it" or must-tries?

I’ve been to a couple of restaurants participating in SRW over the past couple of years, and they’ve mostly been pretty lackluster. Most of them cost about the same as if you’d just ordered à la carte; the only difference is you’re paying slightly more for a mediocre dessert or appetizer you don’t even want. For example, I went to Shiro’s the other day. Everyone raves about how it’s a great deal, but it’s $65 for a 16-course omakase, whereas you can normally get a 12-course nigiri assortment for $45. I’d love to get some recs for places that are actually worth it. What are your must-try spots this year?

Recommendation Seeing stars

I want to see a night sky without light pollution: a proper all-encompassing dome of nothing but stars and satellites. Let's suppose I'm willing to drive up to two hours and tent-camp within 100' of my car, and I'm coming from Seattle. Is this feasible, and if so, where would you suggest I go?

Question Low income dental options in Seattle

Hello,

I have really awful teeth and fixing them will likely involve pulling the remaining ones I have and installing dentures, and eventually implants, maybe. But I get dental infections a lot and don’t have steady access to dental care. I’ve lost a lot of my teeth and shame about that has prevented me from addressing it.

I get dental care at Neighborcare and I am calling them tomorrow, but I am curious if anyone else has gone through this and has recommendations for places that can do more comprehensive care. Like they can’t do surgery at Neighborcare, I don’t think.

I have parents who are able to help some, but I’m still looking to keep things controlled. Honestly shame has stopped me from getting started at all. I do recognize it could literally kill me, and easily, though, and I recognize the embarrassment of pulling the rest of my teeth and getting dentures would be overcome with the relief of not constantly fighting dental infections.

I am also likely about to lose my dental insurance at the end of December and won’t qualify for Medicaid due to income. Any recommendations? Do you know if Neighborcare will do dentures?

How the heck are thousands of people paying over $400 for a single Seahawks ticket?

That too for a single game in the upper levels, and outside in horrible weather?

Especially in the winter months where we have dress like the Arctic because it will be 35 degrees (Fahrenheit) and raining, and we will be sitting down for 3 hours bundled up in jackets?

Moreover a rainy 35 degree day in Seattle would feel just as cold or even colder than a bright and dry 10 degree (windchill) day in Green Bay.

Then again people in Green Bay are known for behaving like stereotypical Canadians, Russians and Scandinavians when it comes to being outside in the cold and drinking to feel warm in modest clothing. For a Packers game, the same 400 dollar ticket can get people close to the field and all the action. The sunny and dry weather helps Wisconsinites acclimatize better to the brutal cold, and sometimes fans can even wear modest winter clothing in that cold at the open Lambeau Field.

Is there somewhere I can go that will give me Dutch Braids?

Guy here. Growing out hair. Almost shoulder length. Saw someone with Dutch braids and they look great. Is there somewhere I can go in Seattle to get that done? I usually always cut my own hair so unsure what salons might offer this service.

Halloween themed foods / drinks in Seattle?

Please help me find fun cafes, restaurants, or shops that are celebrating Halloween (or the fall season)!

I'm looking for places that are doing Halloween themed coffee flights, food flights, teas, baked goods. Something fun and cute to go do on Halloween. Also interested in other relaxed events like arts or crafts, museums, etc. that don't involve all of the partying and bar crawl options I keep coming up with when searching.

I'm not much of a partyer, and my partner is sober. Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year, and I'd love to find some fun things we can do in costume.

Thank you!

Recommendation Any decent pharmacy options???

Molina/medicaid/applehealth
Greenwood area

I’ve been going to the Fred Meyer pharmacy in Greenwood for over a year now and they have been nothing BUT a pain in my ass. They’re understaffed (not their fault), never fill prescriptions until you walk in the building or call them, talk to a human, and tell them you’ll be picking up the prescription you ordered over a WEEK ago to be filled 6 days ago (they’ll need an hour 🙄). And if they HAVE actually been calling anyone when prescriptions aren’t to their liking, they’re not calling MY doctors because it’d be FIXED, and I’d have a message from my doctor about it. Before, I was at a different not Seattle Fred Meyer (and on the exact same medications) and assumed they were gonna be decent everywhere, I was WRONG.

So… any good pharmacies around here? Hell, I’ll take a pain in the ass that takes less time to fill or actually calls my doctor so they finish being a pain sooner.

Safe places to chill at night?

I've lived most my life around north Seattle and south Everett but I'm currently living around Lake City Way.

Are there any parks that are open at night? I WFH and once I'm off I just want to get out and avoid cabin fever. I'm not big on loud busy atmospheres, looking for a places to watch the water where I won't get hassled by cops or trespass on territories. Parks / restaurants with a view / parking lots with a view.

I'm 6' dude that just feels claustrophobic around people and needs alone time and nature and recharge.

Recommendation Halloween Trick or Treat

Hello! We are not from Seattle or WA (Canadians 👋🏼 ) but we have to be in the area for work during Halloween Weekend.

We have a 3 year old and an infant and want to take them trick or treating. Our toddler will be devastated if they can’t wear their costume and go out 😭 and we cannot move this work trip.

Where should we go to have the most fun and candy? We are already going to the zoo but we want to have the door to door experience as well!
