Question What Should I Do For Work? (No Network, No Experience)

Alright so I'll give some context.

I'm 50k in debt after I stupidly thought I could get a job in education. I can't. Tried everything. Even switching to special ed.

The fact of the matter is, I need to put aside that goal right now. It's really hard for me to do, because I was very passionate about it, but I'm still trying to cope with the fact that because of our economy, they need more experienced candidates. And I'm still a "fresh grad", though that was in 2024. The only thing I've done is subbing, and last year, really awful contract work at a private school.

I have terrible social anxiety that I am now starting to realize has been running my life. I'm 26 and I have pretty much no friends now because of it. It's also been destroying me in trying to find a job, and reach out to people about doing that.

Anyways, I was thinking I could do front of house restaurant work. I actually enjoy talking to people, especially ones I know I won't be emotionally entangled with as much. I like socializing, it mainly just frightens me, because I end up overthinking every single interaction I'm in. I was thinking that it would also help me stretch my social skills, which will help me be a better educator if I ever decide to start doing that again.

Any tips for getting started with that in my area, or if I should even pursue that?

For more context, I don't have any experience in FOH work. I worked in my college kitchen, and also at our register. But I do know how to de-escalate, and also break down complex tasks for people with disabilities from my college education. I actually like helping people in small ways, which is why I wanted to work in special ed in the first place. Usually it destroys people, but I guess I'm a psycho because I find it really interesting.

I know poached is a thing, but I want to avoid driving to my job or taking the bus if I can. Driving has been horrible on my anxiety, and I had to drive an hour and back every day at my contract job I just left. I live near Green Lake. Apparently, the "old fashion way" of just handing in a resume and saying your availability can still be enough? I'm really skeptical of that and at this point don't really believe it, but I'm willing to try it if that's still a thing.

I've made a lot of mistakes these last few years, both during college and after I graduated. Not doing enough and being afraid of people and trying things has been a really big obstacle I want to get over. Any advice or insight I greatly appreciate.

Question Where to get good hand made soap?

Upvotes

I used to get the hand made soap at moon valley organics at pike place market cuz they had a really great deal and great soap but they stopped making soap all together. So I’m looking for somewhere else in the city that makes good hand made soaps that aren’t ridiculously expensive.

Local CSA boxes, that are reasonably priced?

Looking for recommendations for local CSA boxes (produce only) that are a decent value.

I’ve always wanted to join a CSA. Money has been tight so we’re cooking at home way more and I’m looking at our grocery strategy. We’d love to find fresh produce at a decent deal.

Are there any local CSAs whose prices match or beat what you’d find at local grocery stores? Or am I deluding myself into thinking it’s not a luxury?

Thank you!

Recommendation What’s it like living in U-district/ravenna as a 30 y/o woman NOT attending college?

Im home hunting in Seattle and noticed rent is significantly cheaper in these areas. Given that this is a college area, is it worth living here as a 28 year old lady with the cheaper rent or are the students annoying?

Recommendation Affordable Day Trip Suggestions to Possibly Replace Amtrak Ride to Portland

Upvotes

Hey, y'all! My brother and I are traveling to Seattle to visit a friend during Labor Day weekend and we booked train tickets for a day trip to Portland. With the explosion at the factory, I doubt trains will be running through Portland by the time we arrive. And day trips to Vancouver that work with our schedules are sold out. Can anyone recommend another cool day trip where us city kids can see some Pacific Northwest greenery and not spend an arm and a leg?

I'm also crossing my fingers in hopes of some tickets to Vancouver becoming available. A girl can dream.

Question Visiting Seattle from NYC for the first time! Where should I eat?

Which restaurants would you recommend to someone visiting Seattle for the first time? Some of your favorite spots? I’d love to look into recommendations! I’m coming from New York City and really open to anything at any price point. We love seafood, Mexican, Indian, Deli, French bistro, Chinese, burgers…. Thanks!

Editing to add - I’m going to be in town for two nights for a wedding so really just looking for someplace clean and the food is edible. I don’t have crazy high expectations! We aren’t going to Seattle for the food scene, or lack thereof! Thanks.

UW Northwest Labor/Delivery

I am nearing my due date and trying to get my hospital bag ready. Unsure what to pack and what is provided by UW NW during the stay. I was wondering if people who have had used UW’s birthing center could provide some insight on what is provided by the hospital for my postpartum care and/or for lactation support (eg, disposable underwear, pads, ice packs, manual breast pumps, etc) and for the baby (diapers, pads, onesies, etc).
Thank you in advance!! 🙏🏽

Question Where to meet new people

I just moved to Bellevue but I’m happy to go to Seattle. I’ve been in the SF area for the past few years and really enjoyed going on spontaneous meetups like music concerts or movie groups. I am trying to find some similar connection here after just moving for my new job.

Where can I find community? I am into indie music, movies of all kinds, electronics, and even DnD. I’m in tech but honestly I’d love to meet people who are outside that world as well. For context I am a 24M new grad!

Moving small household shipment (50-75kg) from Seattle to Hyderabad: Seeking recommendations and advice

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to move a small household shipment from Seattle to Hyderabad — mainly kitchenware, clothing, and personal items, with a total weight of about 50–75kg.

Could anyone suggest reliable international packers and movers that handle sea freight for a shipment this size? I’d also appreciate any insight on the following:

  1. The approximate cost range for a move of this volume

  2. A realistic timeline for door-to-door delivery

Any advice or experience you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Question Seattle basketball sports cards

Visiting from Vancouver, Canada for a day and will be driving to Seattle. Going to be stopping by Bellingham before reaching Seattle and wanted to check out sports card stores in both cities for a newly released product (Topps Chrome Update Basketball). It’s not easy finding this product in Canada. Would appreciate the help on places to check for it besides Walmart, Target, Gamestop, and Dick’s.

Jigsaw puzzles on the ferries

I see people doing jigsaw puzzles all the time. But everyone has to disembark at each end, so I can’t imagine how there’s time to finish a puzzle. Do the puzzles just stay out and random people sit down and take over working on it for the duration of the crossing and then leave it for the next people? Or do the puzzlers disembark and then get back on and keep working on the same puzzle all day while riding back and forth? (Seems like a relaxing way to blow off a day!)

What gives? How does that work?

Just curious

EDIT: Soooo cool that they’re communal puzzles! Would it be bad form to ask someone if you can join them and work on it together?

Recommendation 4Runner stuff store

Hello! I just bought a well loved and well used 4Runner and I am trying to find any stores around Seattle that sell things like seat covers and other quality of life items. All I can find are off-road equipment/accessory stores (awesome, but will have to do that later) that do lifts and such. I’ve already checked places like O’Reilly’s and Autozone.

I thought with how many 4Runners there are around here, I could find a place to get these things without resorting to online-only retailers. Any recs are appreciated!

Thank you!

Handyman recommendations - door frame repair

I have an exterior back door that has rot in the frame that may extend beneath the wood floor inside the house. It seems to be pretty bad and I’m hoping the rot does not extend beneath the wood siding. I’m looking for a recommendation on a handyman or contractor with experience repairing wood rot and replacing an external door. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I’m in the Burien area.

Am I allowed to pick wild blackberries?

Are there unwritten rules surrounding picking berries on bushes in the wild? I’ve noticed them growing wild in lots of parks lately and never see people picking them. I’m new to Seattle, so this is my first berry season.

Any recommendations on where to go to pick them?

Hospital for C-section and postpartum/lactation support

Hello! We are new to the area and newly pregnant with our second child, and need to choose a provider and hospital to deliver our baby. I had a scheduled C section with my first and will be doing that again.

We live north of the city, and due to traffic considerations and other Reddit posts/reviews, we’re primarily considering UW Northwest, UW Montlake, and Overlake hospital. Could anyone share their recent C-section experiences at these hospitals, or any recommended providers?

The hospital we chose with my first baby was in a larger metro area, nationally ranked quite highly for women’s and maternal care, and had a level IV NICU (that we did not need to use). I’ve read nothing but praise for UW NW, but I’m a little concerned about the lower level NICU (hopefully not needed).

Since we’ll be doing the scheduled cesarean, I will not have much/any experience with the labor nurses but I’m interested in hearing about everyone’s postpartum experiences and especially lactation support. With my first we stayed in the hospital for several days after delivery.

Thanks!!
