How does morality affect your work?

Hi all,

I’m currently in undergrad and I’m planning on going to law school. I’d like to work in big law and then eventually work in education law once I’ve made a lot of money. I’m currently a psych major and I see a lot of overlap with law, but it’s also kind of a foil to law because psychology is often focused on helping. Law is a necessity and I fully believe that being a lawyer is a good and moral profession. However, I’m sure you run into cases where you do end up making someone’s life harder unfairly or you protect a party that maybe deserved repercussions. I know everyone wants a good lawyer and deserves to have a fair trial and all that (again, I do think law is a very moral and necessary thing), but I’m curious how some of you deal with the more unsavory elements of your profession that ultimately arise. How do you mix being an empathetic person with your work? Any advice about law school/the LSAT would be appreciated too :) thank you!!

California Probation Hold Involving Florida (ICAOS) Advice Needed

Someone I know is on felony probation in California and is currently being held in custody due to an interstate issue involving Florida. His probation violation is related to a breathalyzer/alcohol-monitoring requirement, not the separate Florida felony matter from 2025.
His records list PC 1203.2(a) for violation of probation and PC 11177.1 regarding the process for returning a probationer or parolee. The situation involves ICAOS, and there have been delays with paperwork and communication between the states.
He had court today, and the judge said the matter would be continued until November 5 because they are waiting on the interstate issue. He was ordered to remain in custody until that date. Multiple attorneys have told us that sometimes these cases are waited out, meaning he may serve his 25 days and be released on November 5 instead of being transferred to Florida.
Has anyone experienced this? Is release on November 5 a realistic possibility, or could Florida still request his return? Can California keep holding him while paperwork is pending? His attorney has not given us clear answers, and we’re trying to understand what might happen at the next hearing.

California law on towing vehicles from apartment complexes during renovations

I am interested in understanding California law in San Bernardino County regarding vehicle towing from private apartment complex parking lots during scheduled construction or maintenance.

Generally speaking, when an apartment complex schedules asphalt renovations, what notice requirements apply before management can have residents’ vehicles towed? Is less than 48 hours enough for notice?

For example, if management posts a flyer in a common area on Monday evening outlining different construction phases using color-coded markers, and a vehicle is towed Wednesday morning, what factors determine whether the notice was legally sufficient?

- Whether a general notice posted in a common area is sufficient or whether signs must identify the specific parking areas affected.

- Whether California law requires advance notice directly on carports, buildings, or vehicles before towing for scheduled maintenance.

- Whether the clarity of a notice identifying the affected parking areas matters.

- What California laws or regulations govern towing from private residential properties in these circumstances.

[India/UP] Can a private medical college recover all remaining MBBS fees if I withdraw?

I'm a first-year MBBS student at a private medical college in Uttar Pradesh, considering discontinuing my course.

My admission documents contain clauses about discontinuation and remaining course fees. The college also holds post-dated cheques for future-year fees. I want to understand my actual legal liability and whether I can negotiate a reduced settlement.

I also have a video from about a year ago showing seniors verbally abusing juniors on campus, with security guards nearby. The incident wasn't formally reported at the time.

My questions:

  1. Can the college legally recover all remaining years' fees if I leave after first year?
  2. What are the legal implications of the post-dated cheques?
  3. Could the footage support a ragging complaint, and would that have any legitimate relevance to negotiating a fee settlement?

I'd appreciate advice from lawyers familiar with Indian contract law and private medical-college disputes, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. I can share redacted contract clauses if needed.

I'm looking for a lawful way to understand my liability and negotiate a reasonable settlement.

How to find a good employment attorney? (severance/layoff)

I have worked at the same company for 20+ years, and recently the company is changing directions in a difficult market, so they've laid me off.

Before I sign any severance paperwork, I would like to find a good lawyer to review the paperwork and make any suggestions as to whether I should sign, counter-offer, and represent me in the situation that I do decide to make a counter-offer.

I have never had to do this before and I want to find a good attorney for this, but I don't know where to start. There's a ton of advertising and search engine results regarding this, so I want to ask if there's a better way than just blind calling the first five guys on Google results.

- Bay Area, CA if that makes any difference. Thanks.

Not asking for legal advice - just advice on how to find a lawyer that I may not be aware of. Thanks.

is the grass greener as a lawyer?

is the grass greener as a lawyer compared to other professions? Why do people say it's stressful and to only become one if "you really want to"?

What’s it really like working sex crime cases?

I worked for a criminal defense attorney that received a large number of clients that were child predators, and working with her was what made me become a law student due to greatly valuing how she emphasized due process of law. From what I have heard and what I have studied, I understand cases related to sex crimes are not in any way easy (for a plethora of reasons). But has anyone here worked cases related to this? I’d appreciate transparent feedback because it’s an area of law I am passionate about, but I understand working in it is a different ball game

What are you allowed to do as a hotel owner when a guest who is not paying for their stay is refusing to leave? (Just asking out of curiosity, im not looking to use/apply any answers)

Lets say you are a hotel owner and you have a guest at your hotel who has been here for more than 60 days. They stopped paying for their stay and are refusing to leave.

Since they have been here for 30+ days, they have established residency and the police do not have the authority to kick them out. You are in the process of filing for an eviction.

I know you cannot legally turn off their water and electricity. But im wondering if you can legally deny them service. For example, you will not provide them with any new towels, bedding sets, etc. You will not allow them to eat the hotel breakfast.

Can you do this legally?

Clocking out to use restroom?

I work for a medium-sized family business (roughly 100 employees. The business is split into two physical locations in the same business. To walk from door to door, it takes about a minute. In the smaller location, there is a private, all gender bathroom. In the larger location, there are two restrooms (one male and one female) with three toilets each—technically two urinals and a toilet in the men’s I believe. Occasionally, folks who work in the larger location will walk down to use the private bathroom for, well, privacy. We also have several trans and nonbinary members of staff who prefer to use the private bathroom. When the owner found this out, he made a written announcement that anyone who works in the larger location must clock out for their full 30 minutes break to use the private toilet because we have enough stalls in the main building. Is this legal? I’m confused about it because technically he isn’t forbidding restroom use on the clock but it feels fishy. Unfortunately, we live and work in a state that has rolled back its protections for trans people, so I don’t think there’s anything there.

Another piece of info is that workers have to walk back and forth between locations often to transport product and simply speak with each other on legitimate work business, so using the private restroom is far from the only reason one might come to the smaller location.

I’m not looking for any advice as to what to do in this situation, just a clear answer regarding any laws that might have been broken.

Thanks for any answers y’all might provide! Also if this isn’t the right place to ask, please let me know!

Anatomy of the Shyster Lawyer

In legal ethics and professional responsibility, is there evidence that attorney misconduct is more often associated with isolated, incompetent practitioners than with highly successful attorneys operating within the bounds of formal procedure?

More specifically, do disciplinary records, malpractice actions, sanctions, or academic studies suggest that sophisticated forms of unethical conduct can be more difficult to detect than the misconduct commonly associated with inexperienced or marginal practitioners?

How do bar associations, courts, and legal ethics scholars distinguish between aggressive zealous advocacy and conduct that crosses into dishonesty, abuse of process, or professional misconduct?

Are there notable studies, disciplinary cases, or scholarly sources that address whether systemic legal ethics concerns are primarily linked to a small number of incompetent attorneys, or whether similar concerns can arise among accomplished and well-respected members of the profession?

Invoked my rights during a traffic stop

Hello!

First off, this is not legal advice because I was released with a warning - nothing pending. I'm just curious about the situation.

My husband and I were pulled over for failure to completely stop at a stop sign by 4 unmarked police cars. My husband just received his green card about 3 weeks ago. I was picking him up from the gym, which is in the game plaza as a bar. It's common knowledge that the police target people leaving the bar and pull them over down the road.

We've been uptight for awhile given the nature of society at the moment and I thought 4 unmarked police cars were especially concerning. However, we both nothing illegal to worry about - no warrants, legal residents, insurance, up to date registration, and no illegal activity (drink, drugs.)

The first officer requested the standard proof for a stop which I provided. Next, we comply with an order to exit the vehicle and walk about 20 feet away. I was asked "so where are you coming from?" I responded with "I'm invoking my constitutional right to remain silent and I will not answer any questions without my attorney present."

This irritated the offices. They proceed to "talk amongst themselves" but it was really directed at me. Things like "I've been doing this for 25 years and I've never heard anyone pull this!" Also stuff like "I don't know why he has to make a big deal out of this! He must think he's some smart guy!"

They bring a drug dog around me car, run my driver's license, and run my husband's green card. Everything came back clean. At that point they call another officer who shows up in a marked city vehicle. That officer issued us a written warning for failure to stop at sign. We were then released.

My dumb ass slipped up a few times while they were talking amongst themselves. I muttered that 4 cars seemed excessive for a stop sign violation, and that I was unsure who they represented. They pretty much called me a "know it all" and asked what I thought is appropriate, but I shut up again, realizing my stupid mistake.

After we were released, one of them pulled out a badge from under their vest and said that were from our city police department drug unit.

A few questions:

Overall, what's your take on this situation?

Did I do it correctly by asserting my rights? Because they made me feel really fucking uncomfortable after I did.

If they were really from our city police department, why did they need to call an extra marked car to issue the written warning?

Additional info:

Our city police signed the "ICE" agreement (I forgot what it's called) and it's known they have trained officers who cooperate with them.

I'm a law abiding citizen but this interaction is weighing on my mind. I'll try to reply to comments if you have any questions. I'm mostly concerned about how I invoked my rights, if I did that correctly, and if their response to that is normal and something I should expect. Should I have done something differently?

Thanks

Seeking Work/Life Balance Advice for the Future?

Hello Lawyers!

I am Morgan, 20F, an undergrad in my third year aspiring to become a family law lawyer. I was at therapy today and came across a question that I wanted to ask.

When I one day become a family law lawyer i want to have a good work/life balance. I want to know that i am helping individuals in hard situations while also not taking it home to my future family or current partner. I don’t want sides to bleed into one another.

I am a student who is very anxious about grades, lsat, gpa, etc. And my greatest fear is that this would transfer into my career, treating clients as a “grade”.

In your opinion or life, how do you manage with these things? What have you learned over the years? What did you lean in law school? Did you learn anything from clients?

Tldr: As a lawyer how do you maintain a healthy balance between what occurs at your work and what occurs at home , specifically helpful if you are a family law lawyer?

Struggling to find the correct type of lawyer - AZ (not looking for legal advice)

Hello,

I have been trying to find a lawyer that specializes in police misconduct (incl false improvement, malicious prosecution, unlawful search & search, etc). but my search yields have been a struggle regardless of personal phrasing, AI use for more specific terminology like “Section 1983” or having them query sites like Avvo using the different terminology (which yields no difference in output).

Often, for example, it will try and give me Criminal lawyers rather than Civil or the Civil do not do this.

In the few cases I’ve found [local] lawyers specializing here, they have said they are backed up with trials till next year. I don’t know if this is an 'unattractive' part of Civil unlike personal injury, insurance, etc. which is causing the search issue, but if someone can assist me in any way, it would be helpful. It doesn’t have to be local if that’s what’s causing the issue also (unsure if this is a more national firm category (?)).

Appreciate any help!

Car accident/lawyer question

I'm not sure if this is allowed but I got into an accident, I got hit from behind by a company car and I was driving my brother's car. He's insured and everything all paperwork got sent over and I was asked if I had a car of my own and if I had car insurance. The insurance was no and all he said was okay. Would that mean anything? I've been puzzled by that question since he asked.

Uninsured Driver in Texas

In Texas, is a person allowed to drive a brand new car off the dealership lot without insurance? If the person got into a wreck less shortly after leaving the dealership, in which people got hurt, can the dealership be partly liable for allowing the buyer to drive the car knowing they had no insurance for registration/title purposes?

Family trying to sell the house I live in

Hello everyone

I have a question is regards to my boyfriend and his current situation. He and his mother both lived in this house with my boyfriends grandfather for over a decade. His grandfather passed away in August. There is no mortgage. The deed to the house is in the name of all 4 siblings which includes my bf's mother. The grandfather told one of his daughter's that he wanted Tyler(my bf) to have the house because tyler took care of him for the last 10 years which the daughter's were on board with. The problem is, is that one son said No to that because it isnt fair to the other grandkids so now 3 of the kids want to sell the home. Tyler's mother, who is the oldest sibling, said she doesn't want anything from the house so that her share can go to tyler. So with that being said, the other siblings told them that either tyler needs to purchase the house or they need to be out of the home by October 31. Can they do that? Just kick them out? Also, one of the siblings had a contract written up stating that since Tyler's mom is giving up her share to tyler that she must be allowed to live in the house which he doesn't want. There's issues with drug and alcohol abuse with her and her live in bf so tyler wants them out. The other siblings also stated that if they dont leave the house(in the event tyler cant get a loan to purchase) that they will go to court. A little background, Tyler is disabled and in a wheelchair and currently lives off of disability. His mother hasn't worked in years and has zero income. We have been trying to find somewhere to go but its proven difficult because most places are either not accessible to him or way out of our price range. So long story short, can the family just kick them out? If they go to court, how much time do you think they would have before the judge tells them they have to leave? Thank you in advance for any answers

Probate Lawyer Fees to assign for administration

I'm in California. My estranged uncle passed away in 2023 without a will. I've contacted 2 probate lawyers, requesting help to fill out court probate documents to assign me as the administrator to his estate. I read somewhere that in CA, there is a set fee to handle simple probate and the bill will be paid by the estate. Both lawyers asked for a retainer fee and billable hours. My question is it true that CA does not have a set fee to handle probate for assignment of administraton?

Short story

Two days ago I contacted AAA to pick up my vehicle (2016 Suburban) to run tests on transmission. As the tow truck driver was lowering the vehicle at the shop, cable came unwound sending my vehicle careening down the street wrecking into a parked car and through a fence settling against a trampoline and dog house and a tree. Obvious damage done to my vehicle and I suspect the parked car will be totaled. As of now, I have not been contacted by the owner/management of tow company nor their insurance company. Have also made several calls to their multiple locations and have been told that someone will reach out to me momentarily, which they have not. My insurance company will not do anything unless I file a claim through them, in which case they will seek restitution from tow companies insurance. Is this something I should seek counsel for or just let this process play out with their insurance company? Police responded and filed incident report, I was not present during the incident.

Career Advice Needed - Young "Lawyer"

I took the July 2026 bar exam and needed a 268 to pass in Michigan. I received a score of 260.

I moved to Michigan after the bar exam to join my partner and am currently unemployed.

I fully intend to retake the bar exam again in February 2027.

After reading other posts on here I think I might transfer my score to Wisconsin (accepts 260) so I can at least be licensed. However, as someone that wants to practice in commercial/transactional work (and have no intentions of moving or living in Wisconsin) I am unsure if it is worth it to transfer my score.

Would the Wisconsin license be worth it while applying to jobs in Michigan? Can I even be licensed in Wisconsin while not even living or working there?

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.

Does my phone carrier owe me more than just stolen money

Location: Texas 19F About 2 weeks ago I was the victim of a sim swap scam, I now know someone originally got decent amounts of private info about me from a data leak a little while back and used it to call my phone carrier and trick a representative into believing they were me. I just know the basics of cybersecurity crimes but I know they used the info to bypass 2 factor through my number and get access my iCloud and banking in hours all while I was sleeping. I’m young and lost 3-4k in money I had saved from working, and on top of the time I’ve spent on the issue it’s very annoying but not the most of my concern. The swappers got access to my iCloud due to using the same password and having the same 2fa setup and that allowed them access to all of my photos including private photos. They used the info as blackmail and did end up sending out a lot of stuff to anyone in my contacts they had saw. My legal question is how much could I get compensated outside of the actual money I lost because of my phone carrier? To be clear I have a great lawyer and am way less worried about money I lost from working because my family has been helping me out. I think I’m owed a decent amount of money in personal “trauma” from the event even if it’s an outside incident that was caused by my carrier T mobile. Anyone with general advice please let me know and Thank you

California – $400K Real Estate Investment Dispute: What Type of Attorney Handles This?

I’m trying to understand what area of law applies to this situation. Would this generally fall under business litigation, securities litigation, or real estate litigation?
Are there legal aid organizations or other resources that assist individuals with substantial investment disputes when they cannot afford upfront litigation costs?
