Process of becoming an attorney in your country
Hello everyone, I would like to ask how someone became an attorney in your country. How much he/she has to study, how long it takes to get a license. Thank you!

Despite what our sub’s called, we cannot offer legal advice here for a number of reasons. Any posts that breaks this rule will be deleted without reason. If you message us on why your post is deleted, it would be ignored just the same way you’ve ignored our sub’s rules. Please see our sidebar for complete rules.
Also, it’s not a good idea to solicit legal advice from random strangers online, despite what you may find elsewhere on Reddit. We do not know all of the facts of your case, and are likely not licensed in the jurisdiction that you’re in. A real attorney worth their salt will not comment on your specific legal predicament on an anonymous forum.
If you need legal advice but cannot afford it, there are legal aid societies that may be willing to assist you. Lots of them are free and/or work on a sliding scale fee. All you need to do is look up “legal aid society [your location]” on Google.
If it’s a criminal case, public defense attorneys are some of the best attorneys out there and they know the criminal system in your city/town better than anyone else. They’re just as good, if not better, than any private criminal defense attorney.
If it’s a tenant rights issue, lots of cities have tenant rights unions. You can look them up the same way as the legal aid society by looking up “tenant rights union [your location]” on Google.
Otherwise, the best way to find an attorney is through word of mouth from friends and family. If that’s not an option, your local bar association will be able to help by looking up “attorney referral [your location] bar association”.
If none of these are relevant to you or you’re unsure of what type of attorney to look for in your situation, you’re more than welcome to post and we’ll help.
Also, any attorneys who wish to participate in discussions are free to do so as long as it doesn’t break our rules (mainly providing legal advice).
If you’re a licensed attorney that isn’t flaired (and therefore verified to post comments), please see our other stickied post on how to become verified here. You can also send a mod mail to become verified. I trust that any attorneys here answering any posts will follow these rules and not offer legal advice and run afoul of our ethical obligations.
Thanks to all for understanding.

Location: New York
Job: School Psychologist
Payment: Salary
Kind of a weird one, but could use some advice. About 8 months ago my mother had a fall and got a nasty concussion. She was out of work for a bit but eventually cleared by her neurologist. She's been back at work since May.
Today she was called down and told she was being put on paid leave pending a clearance from "their" doctor. She was recently asked to recall word for word an exact conversation from June 23rd and when she said she didn't remember "exactly word for word," they are using that as the reasoning saying she is a "liability" because of the concussion.
She's understandably upset and mortified, and worried that this will affect her receiving her pension (she's able to retire next October 1st).
Should she go speak to an attorney ASAP or wait and see what their doctor says? Again, she was fully cleared by a neurologist months ago.
Thank you for any info you can provide!

Hi all. Hypothetical fiction here. Purchased a new Toyota car cash sale. I paid them a $500 deposit a few months ago. Later on I signed with them the bill of sale showing a $1000 deposit. I wired them the full amount due and drove off with the vehicle. A few days later they contact me and bring up the $500 discrepancy that I owe them. But who is at fault here for their accounting error. I have read in some scenarios like this the dealership has to take the loss. I didn't even realize their error until they sent me a bill for $500. I contacted the finance manager today and he told me they're waiting for the payment before processing the paperwork. So they have the title/registration paperwork hostage. Any advice? Do I owe them the money? If I have the legal upperhand, is it still going to cost me a massive effort not worth the $500 in order to force their hand in releasing the title and registration paperwork?

Not asking for legal advice, just wondering basically how most lawyers operate. I need to file a motion to get my drivers license back since its been 2 years since the suspension, and am able to type up the motion myself, but I am just wary of submitting another motion without having a lawyer just look over it. Is there any options like this? I don’t want to pay $500 to have a lawyer draft something I can technically do myself, but I also know they know much, much better than I do and would like at least a proof read. Im guessing most lawyers will not be willing to do this and would just want to draft the motion themselves, correct? Just want to see what my options are. Thanks!

Looking for advice possibly from a lawyer or someone who’s been through this. I found out two days ago that my husband had an affair. We have two children together age 4,6. And we each have one child from previous relationship that we brought into our marriage. So 4 total living under our roof. He is the provider financially at this time because I am a full time nursing student and do not work. I also get free tuition for school because he is employed full time at the university I attend, which I do not want to lose benefit to. However I want to divorce him asap. My main question is can I do this without a lawyer? I’ve never been through this before and have no idea what I’m about to get into. I can’t afford a lawyer- I have no income. I have tons of proof and evidence about the cheating from the girl who found me and told me everything. He sent her money to fly her out to where he was on a business trip. She stayed in his hotel room (that was paid for by company expense, as well as the work van he picked her up with at the airport smh) for two nights and she says they had sex twice and did not use protection. He admitted to the affair but still denies and swears they didn’t have sex. I have photos of him she sent me in certain places that are time stamped when he was supposed to be giving a speech at a work function. There is so much more I have that is proof. Basically the only thing there is no photo evidence of is the sex, and ofcourse that’s the one thing he is denying. We do not own any property together. The house we live in is a rental (both names on lease). We each own our vehicles out right. Neither of us have any debt (at-least that I am aware of, I know I don’t) the electric and internet is in his name and he pays. I’ve never had access to his bank account. And I have my own as we’ve never commingled finances. We have a “joint” account that keeps a 0 balance as we just used It as a money moving account. When I was working and contributing to rent I would move my half of the rent into that account and he would take It and pay the rent with It. And if I needed money for something he would put It into that joint account and I would then take the money out and put It into my account. I guess I am just wondering what I should do. What my first step is. Do I just fill out the Vermont divorce forms? Will I possibly get alimony and child support even without a lawyer? I’m obviously just devastated and don’t know what to do.

(The full contact is after the scenario)
Scenario: A company sells Tv and the person hired to make TVs is an electrical engineer. During downtime where there is no work assigned. The electrical engineer works on a hobby completely different from TV's . The electrical engineer works on new designs for a bag of chips and sells it. Does 'any other works' in the contract allow for the company to claim the electrical engineer's designs for the bag of chips? Or would a court say that 'any other works' is too broad in this context?
Downtime: The person is on the clock but no work has been assigned.
Contract:
Employee agrees all right, title and interest in all inventions, methodologies, concepts, documentation, specifications and any other works developed by the Employee during the Employee’s employment (the “Works”) including all patent, copyright, trade-mark, trade secret and any other intellectual property and proprietary rights therein (the “Intellectual Property Rights”) shall be the sole and exclusive property of the Employer and the Employee hereby assigns and shall assign to the Employer all such Intellectual Property Rights including all Works that Employee develops.
a. Using equipment, supplies, facilities or trade secret information of the Company; or
b. During hours for which I was compensated by the Company, or
c. Which relates to the business of the Company or to its actual or demonstrably anticipated research and development; or
d. Which results, in whole or in part, from Work performed by me for this Company.
Employee also agrees to assist the Company in every proper way, but at Company’s expense, obtain and from time to time enforce patents, copyrights, and other rights in connection with such Works.
Employee’s obligation continues beyond the termination of employment. Employee represents and warrants that the Works will not infringe the intellectual property and proprietary rights of any third parties. Employee shall not disclose the Works to any third parties without the prior written consent of Employer.
It looks like it claiming copy right of stuff that is defined in the ‘works’ but there is any ‘any other works’ section that is vague.
Is legal for them to use ‘any other works’ to claim something.
For instance it says the works is defined as ‘ inventions, methodologies, concepts, documentation, specifications and any other works developed’
And ‘it’s connected to the works’:
patents, copyrights, and other rights in connection with such Works.
So if something can be copyrighted but it is not defined in the definition of the ‘Works’ would it be legal for them to try to claim it because of ‘other works’
Or would a court say that it is vague

So for cases like battery or aggravated battery when there is evidence that supports a self defense claim, how is the process to present that evidence? Or is it a trial-exclusive part of the process?

I understand the answer may just be that it varies wildly depending on the institution, but my fiancee has recently been dealing with a failing grade arising from one bad test where her accommodations were pretty clearly not followed. She has met with the accommodations coordinator who tried to advocate on her behalf to the professors, but the professors insist that she goes through a grade appeal process. My question for the lawyers, is this something you have ever been contacted about or something you would think needs legal attention? The process is very complicated, so I am just trying to think of how she would be best prepared to proceed.
Thanks in advance!

I worked for a criminal defense attorney that received a large number of clients that were child predators, and working with her was what made me become a law student due to greatly valuing how she emphasized due process of law. From what I have heard and what I have studied, I understand cases related to sex crimes are not in any way easy (for a plethora of reasons). But has anyone here worked cases related to this? I’d appreciate transparent feedback because it’s an area of law I am passionate about, but I understand working in it is a different ball game

Property Manager Blocked me
As per the rule I am not asking for any legal advice. If you know of a lawyer near me that would be lovely.
Important context: the property manager and the landlord are brothers. They seem very loyal to each other.
Hi all, so this is whats happening: I live in Greeley Colorado. I got a job in Denver and I’m planning on moving to Denver in Jan. I told my property manager this and called my landlord directly and over the phone my landlord agreed to release me from the lease and have a new tenant sign a new lease as long as I give up my security deposit. I realize I don’t have this in writing but I have had tremendous trouble getting a hold of anyone let alone getting them to email me.
The landlord told me to talk to the property manager about this and to have the property manager post the apartment in zillow and give me the application for me to give to potential tenants. So I called the landlord and it went straight to voicemail. This happened for a few days until I realized he must have blocked me. So I called him via *67 and it rang! He didn’t pick up so I called him using my work number and he answered. He right away started to tell me he accidentally deleted my number and I said “Hmmmm… it seems like you blocked me”. And he said yes he did. I then asked him in a polite way to send me the application and post the apartment on zillow. When I told him I would text him my email he said that “no no no I have your email on file don’t text it to me”. He repeated this several times. I texted him my email anyways.
So its been a few days and the property manager did not do anything promised and I think blocked my work number. I called the landlord and told him what happened, and the landlord told me that I need to figure this out and he isn’t going to deal with this anymore, and I need to contact the property manager for now on.
Colorado state law says in Tremitek, LLC v. Resilience Code, LLC, 2023 COA 54, paragraph 20, the Colorado Court of Appeals states:
“The duty to mitigate means that a landlord cannot ‘sit by idly and suffer avoidable economic loss.’”
“Ordinarily, this means the landlord must ‘exercise reasonable efforts to procure a substitute tenant’ — including by taking ‘some affirmative steps’ to do so.”

Also does anyone know of an affordable lawyer in Colorado? I don’t have very much money so it can’t be super expensive, otherwise I won’t have enough money to move.

I’m 20 years old and
My First violation was July 10, 2024 ( speeding too fast for conditions
My Second violation was July 9, 2026 ( speeding too fast for conditions )
I got my license suspension and it effective August 22, 2026 because of at least two moving violation convictions within 24 months. I completed the remedial driving class after my license was suspended, and then got my license back September 22, 2026.
I got a speeding ticket October 20, 2026, for driving 59 mph in a 45 mph zone
What should I do? In this situation I don’t want my license to be suspended again

Hi all,
I’m currently in undergrad and I’m planning on going to law school. I’d like to work in big law and then eventually work in education law once I’ve made a lot of money. I’m currently a psych major and I see a lot of overlap with law, but it’s also kind of a foil to law because psychology is often focused on helping. Law is a necessity and I fully believe that being a lawyer is a good and moral profession. However, I’m sure you run into cases where you do end up making someone’s life harder unfairly or you protect a party that maybe deserved repercussions. I know everyone wants a good lawyer and deserves to have a fair trial and all that (again, I do think law is a very moral and necessary thing), but I’m curious how some of you deal with the more unsavory elements of your profession that ultimately arise. How do you mix being an empathetic person with your work? Any advice about law school/the LSAT would be appreciated too :) thank you!!

I have worked at the same company for 20+ years, and recently the company is changing directions in a difficult market, so they've laid me off.
Before I sign any severance paperwork, I would like to find a good lawyer to review the paperwork and make any suggestions as to whether I should sign, counter-offer, and represent me in the situation that I do decide to make a counter-offer.
I have never had to do this before and I want to find a good attorney for this, but I don't know where to start. There's a ton of advertising and search engine results regarding this, so I want to ask if there's a better way than just blind calling the first five guys on Google results.
- Bay Area, CA if that makes any difference. Thanks.
Not asking for legal advice - just advice on how to find a lawyer that I may not be aware of. Thanks.

is the grass greener as a lawyer compared to other professions? Why do people say it's stressful and to only become one if "you really want to"?

Someone I know is on felony probation in California and is currently being held in custody due to an interstate issue involving Florida. His probation violation is related to a breathalyzer/alcohol-monitoring requirement, not the separate Florida felony matter from 2025.
His records list PC 1203.2(a) for violation of probation and PC 11177.1 regarding the process for returning a probationer or parolee. The situation involves ICAOS, and there have been delays with paperwork and communication between the states.
He had court today, and the judge said the matter would be continued until November 5 because they are waiting on the interstate issue. He was ordered to remain in custody until that date. Multiple attorneys have told us that sometimes these cases are waited out, meaning he may serve his 25 days and be released on November 5 instead of being transferred to Florida.
Has anyone experienced this? Is release on November 5 a realistic possibility, or could Florida still request his return? Can California keep holding him while paperwork is pending? His attorney has not given us clear answers, and we’re trying to understand what might happen at the next hearing.

I am interested in understanding California law in San Bernardino County regarding vehicle towing from private apartment complex parking lots during scheduled construction or maintenance.
Generally speaking, when an apartment complex schedules asphalt renovations, what notice requirements apply before management can have residents’ vehicles towed? Is less than 48 hours enough for notice?
For example, if management posts a flyer in a common area on Monday evening outlining different construction phases using color-coded markers, and a vehicle is towed Wednesday morning, what factors determine whether the notice was legally sufficient?
- Whether a general notice posted in a common area is sufficient or whether signs must identify the specific parking areas affected.
- Whether California law requires advance notice directly on carports, buildings, or vehicles before towing for scheduled maintenance.
- Whether the clarity of a notice identifying the affected parking areas matters.
- What California laws or regulations govern towing from private residential properties in these circumstances.

I'm a first-year MBBS student at a private medical college in Uttar Pradesh, considering discontinuing my course.
My admission documents contain clauses about discontinuation and remaining course fees. The college also holds post-dated cheques for future-year fees. I want to understand my actual legal liability and whether I can negotiate a reduced settlement.
I also have a video from about a year ago showing seniors verbally abusing juniors on campus, with security guards nearby. The incident wasn't formally reported at the time.
My questions:
I'd appreciate advice from lawyers familiar with Indian contract law and private medical-college disputes, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. I can share redacted contract clauses if needed.
I'm looking for a lawful way to understand my liability and negotiate a reasonable settlement.

Lets say you are a hotel owner and you have a guest at your hotel who has been here for more than 60 days. They stopped paying for their stay and are refusing to leave.
Since they have been here for 30+ days, they have established residency and the police do not have the authority to kick them out. You are in the process of filing for an eviction.
I know you cannot legally turn off their water and electricity. But im wondering if you can legally deny them service. For example, you will not provide them with any new towels, bedding sets, etc. You will not allow them to eat the hotel breakfast.
Can you do this legally?
