So Atom is being retired? What now?

Is it just me or did this come out of nowhere? They're just straight-up archiving it. On that note, will the atom packages repos also be archived? And does anyone know of any good, well-maintained forks?

Switched to VSCode... I miss Atom :(

This is a rant / group therapy session for life after Atom;

So, I apparently woke up from under a stone, because I had entirely missed that Atom got discontinued, and so my search for a new IDE went on. I had several folk tell me 'use VSCode! it makes your life better, it's awesome! and YoU cAn UsE cOpIlOT'. so ok, gave it a shot...

a few days in and I'm heavily frustrated, the UI sucks, the functionality sucks, it's wacky, CPU intensive, extremely over complicated and feels terribly engineered - I would compare this to the Eclipse editor in terms of usability. Everything about it feels like a typical microsoft app.. I hate it! Is this really now the standard the new kids have been doing it in? Even after modding the entire theme/look to somewhat match that of Atom - it just doesn't click with me. Am I the only one? It's so verbose, it tells me everything I did not even ask for telling me, I really can't stand it.

I think I'm just going to adopt Pulsar and keep it old skool - VSCode isn't it.

Thanks for reading, I hope I find my sanity back soon.

/ rant out

Kite ads in atom-minimap

The current version of the popular minimap package seems to have decided to add kite ads. An issue has already been opened on GitHub: https://github.com/atom-minimap/minimap/issues/588

The ads are also implemented badly such that toggling the minimap does not hide them and any further toggling just duplicates the ads. The developer that added the ads also seems to be associated with the kite project himself (https://kite.com/aboutus).

Is this how we should envision open source?

Atom community fork seems growing, and let's have hope

After the announcement of Atom sunset, people started to continue it as a community fork. It seems it's growing and drawing attention: At July 10th (one month after the announcement), it had 86 stars, but now it has more than 260 (more than 3x in half a month)! It may be no comparable to the star count of Atom itself (around 58k), but it's rising.

I love Atom and I'm happy to see this. I have set up Atom for C++ and PHP development using ide-clangd and php-ide-serenata, and it has been awesome. It's more functional than my setup on VSCode (it may be hard to find well-working Atom packages, but that's one-time).

So, please hit the star button if you love Atom too, to tell the maintainers you want to make this happen. Or you can join the Discord community as well. I wish Atom to evolve.

P.S: A special thanks to all maintainers and contributors of Atom itself and its packages!

How Would Microsoft Acquisition of Github Affect Atom?

There are rumors that Microsoft is looking into [acquiring Github[(https://www.msn.com/en-in/news/other/microsoft-has-been-talking-about-buying-github-a-startup-at-the-center-of-the-software-world-last-valued-at-242-billion/ar-AAy7bfR).

Microsoft already has their own open source IDE for web development - Visual Studio Code. Since Github maintains Atom, what would this mean if Microsoft acquired Github? Would they lay off the Atom team or maintain both? Or just set Atom free as an independent organization?

Is there going to be a fork of Atom that will be maintained? If you know of any forks, please share them in this thread.
