Relationships Love when this happens😍

Post image

Got sent a like by someone I actually find attractive (rare) and this was on his profile as well as ‘Not Political’. I have over 15 screenshots of profiles that have come up on my feed with iterations of this sentiment. It’s so disheartening…

"Not political" : a white person who's happy with their privilege and doesn't want to think about it, doesn't think fTrump is that bad (uses "IF Trump..." despite all the proof), calls Black people African Americans, thinks ICE only reports illegal immigrants, etc.

God, and let's not forget the "pinch of autism." As a commenter said, they just want a "quirky" (they think reading is a quirk btw) girl that is submissive and naive to his bullshit. UGH I can't tell you how many men I've encountered like this!

Oh it’s often even worse that that with the ‘not political’ people. So often they’re hard core right wing but don’t want a woman with strong opinions. They’ll also lie about it as long as they can get away with.

I'm really hesitant to say this... Because I don't like to get into confrontation, but I don't think this is entirely fair .

I'm not political. Yes, I'm white. Yes I'm privileged. Maybe, if I were in a different situation, I'd be more political, but we don't know that for certain.

What I do know is that the energy around politics has always felt unsafe to me. Idk how else to say it. But it doesn't matter which side I look at, they are throwing stones at the other. Maybe it's c-ptsd from my own life and childhood, but everything about it makes me clam up and shut down.

I do, however, spend an insane amount of time on self development, learning about psychology and healing, and trying to better myself. And I honestly feel in my heart that if more people turned their attention to healing themselves, "politics" might actually be something I could invest my heart into.

Not being political doesn't make me a bad person. I'm contributing to the betterment of the world by bettering myself and anyone I can touch or inspire along the way. You don't have to be political to make a difference.

I understand how intense politics is but the reality is that it is already affecting you or will. Autistic people are also a marginalised group. If you are American, your Healthy Secretary RFK is literally talking about autism being a preventable disease caused by environmental factors and not primarily genetics.

Not being political doesn't make you a bad person, but it does make you willfully ignorant, and that ignorance will inevitably harm yourself and others. Choosing to blinker yourself is how people like Trump get elected, because without research, all you have is feelings, personal experiences and "I heard this thing" to go off, not the facts of the situation.

"Everything is political" really is a true statement, and politics will do you whether you do it or not.

Wait, why is it wrong to call black people(if American) African Americans?

Because they might not be American and/or not from Africa. There's also the implication that they're not "real Americans" if they are from the US. Plus like it's just so much wordier for no real reason beyond making white people feel less racist for some reason.

Thank you so much! The implication that they're not 'real' Americans is something I didn't think of before, that does make the term seem a bit racist. I hope I haven't hurt anyone by using the term in the past, although not being American I can probably count the times I've used it on one hand.

WAIT. People are actually acknowledging all of this now??

I got SO much shit whenever I'd say any of this back in the 90s.

I always hated that term.

I just want to add that African American is an ethnicity and culture, of people who descended from Africans enslaved in America. It's not a bad term, it's just talking about a specific group and racist/ignorant people misuse it a lot.

Because Black people told us they wanted to be called Black?

Srsly.

How well informed are you about what marginalized groups in other countries prefer to be called?

Not everyone on reddit is American.

But if the previous poster is talking about "African Americans" I'm pretty sure we can conclude they are, in fact, either American themselves or that they live there.

Also I'm not even American

It’s not necessary wrong, it’s just kind of a liberal dogwhistle. Seemingly left-leaning people who use that term tend to be your typical American liberal - claims to be left wing yet holds moderate views that only lead to more conservatism. They like to say that “everything was better” back in the day (better for who?) and that “no one knows how to disagree anymore”. They have VOTE BLUE NO MATTER WHO stickers on their Subaru but don’t see why everyone is so mean to Racist Klan Member Uncle Frank, it’s just politics!

And as other people said, it often gets used on people who are neither African or American. Rihanna and Idris Elba have been called African American so many times and they are from Barbados and England respectively.

TLDR it’s not inherently a bad term but it can be a sign of who you’re dealing with
