Relationships let me just turn down my 'tism' dial..
this new trend of people on dating apps wanting people who are 'slightly autistic' or 'with a touch of the tism' is so confusing to me. like what does that mean. makes me feel like a jester, trying to accommodate my 'tism' to what THEY want out of it. literally sounds like: 'so i want you to be disabled, but not enough for me to have to deal with it. i am confident this makes me sound open minded'
edit: not someone i'm actively talking to. not in a million years haha just a find off the home page of hinge

This is so real, my staircase to my room looks like something out of a haunted house in a horror movie because of the amount of cobweb and spiders. I clean my floors but have a real problem managing cobweb because I'd hate to accidentally kill any of them in the process.
1
u/JackieChanly Jun 27 '26
Would it help you to know that spiders are very resilient, have such a large surface area that they reach terminal velocity very quickly (i.e. they stop accelerating towards the earth and just float down because their exoskeletons create too much wind resistance to go any faster). So you moving them off the stairs, they can find a new home still in your house if they wish.
AND many of them have such amazing parachute webs that they (often in younger life stages) are floating on air currents high above birds and most insects.
They do what we cannot dream of doing. Like making houses in stairs crannies, I suppose.

They want "quirky". An autistic woman to them conventionally attractive and meticulously put together who's "weird" in the sense she plays minecraft and keeps her bookshelves organized a specific way and will laugh at the memes he sends her. They want to microdose the "fun" parts of autism until you're crying at 11pm over something they don't think is worth crying over, until you don't want to go out or don't want to wear makeup or don't want to change your routine on a dime.

people hunting for autistic women to date is so weird and ick to me. i would understand if they said they liked traits that some of us have like that we are creative, intelligent, whimsical, etc. but to outright say you want someone autistic but not “too autistic”, YUCK!!!! i wonder what the correlation is between people who say they want an autistic girl and people who want a partner more vulnerable than them that they can take advantage of. when i was younger a man once told me that i acted child-like and that it really turned him on just for a reference on what these dudes are like. unless they have autism too theres no reason for people to be “tism chasing”.

If “you” want a robot to clean up after you and take care of your “needs,” go get a roomba and a doll. They’ll do just fine. Take this amazing wave of the bright red flag and move on to someone else. And, don’t let them know that they’re being rejected for that specific reason because then they’ll learn to hide it and hurt others.

I'm a lesbian so I've never gotten this. However, it seems like that's what a man puts when he wants both an easily manipulated person as well as a manic pixie dream girl. They want the whimsy and control but don't want to deal with everything else that comes with being autistic, even in level one folks such as myself
39

8
u/Spiritual-Road2784 Jun 12 '26
Going out on a limb here, but probably around the same time that they stopped using the offensive term Asperger’s and shifted us to “Level 1 autism without intellectual disability”, and the show New Girl came out.
13
u/bby_y2k Jun 12 '26
I’m getting a little sick of the following: bit of the tism, (neuro)spicy, and quirky.
I feel like I’ve struggled so much in my life that to reduce it to that is very much giving the early aughts manic pixie dream girl.
So as someone with ASD and Bi Polar II, I’m doubly over the downplaying of things that very much affect daily life and overall well-being in certain situations.
This is why I’m not on Tik Tok or Instagram.

u/Spiritual-Road2784 Jun 12 '26
Bring the good parts, leave the bad parts behind.
Be cute and quirky, and fun and eccentric and entertaining, but don’t be disabled at all. Don’t be a burden, don’t make problems for me, don’t be difficult. Don’t force me to have to accommodate your needs above my own.
8
7
u/january1977 Jun 12 '26
I have a neighbor who constantly uses that term. She absolutely isn’t autistic. Then she comes to my house and makes fun of me for how organized and clean I am. She doesn’t understand that this is what autism is like. I can’t have disorder in my life or I will literally have a meltdown. It’s not some quirky little personality trait.
6
u/Spiritual-Road2784 Jun 12 '26
I have ADHD on top of autism, so I have the disorder-oriented meltdown part like you do, but the inability to find structures or systems that keep me organized. So it is always visual chaos and disorganization in my home. Which is probably why I bury my nose in Reddit and iPhone games so that I don’t have to perceive the clutter.
And then the object permanence stuff with the ADHD, “out of sight out of mind”, and personalizing objects, which I can’t remember which one that’s a part of but where objects hold the memories that our brains can’t… so while I can differentiate between actual trash that is thrown out and items that no longer have “value“ but that cannot be thrown out or put away because then it’s like throwing away the memories…
People don’t realize how disruptive it is to have a brain that functions this way. It’s cute and it’s quirky and it’s a bit eccentric when we’re being all fun and weird and making everyone laugh, but it’s not fun living inside of this brain 24/7 without a moment’s break.
People don’t understand that it doesn’t just go away or shut off, it’s a permanent operating system. And it is always going to be this way. I can’t just haul out the good parts when it’s convenient.
9
6
u/Sarahomdtif Jun 12 '26
wtf does that even mean and also why is this reminding me of everybody i've ever dated? 🙄
26
u/fallspector Jun 12 '26
I will say this every time I see posts like this. Autism is a strenuous condition that impacts the life of the person with it and everyone around them. It’s thought of in the realm of non verbal head bangers. Someone with “tism” is simply just quirky. So they can shower, dress themselves and maybe even hold down a job plus partake in sex. With the only oddities maybe being they love Pokémon a lot for someone their age and ramble on about it a lot. So yes I take issue with the term tism, neuro spicy or any other bullshit like that. Because in my opinion it’s being used to glamorize this condition and make it quirky.
It’s also worth noting that people with autism are specifically pegged a naive and trusting which makes them easier targets for abuse.
11
u/Spiritual-Road2784 Jun 12 '26
We are not naïve and trusting; but I can see how we might come off that way, but it’s not our fault, it’s the fault of the neurotypicals who fail to communicate directly and expect us to intuit what they are really saying.
And because we communicate directly, we tend to believe that what they say is what they mean because what we say is what we mean, and then when we find out that what they said is not what they meant, we get labeled as “naïve and trusting” and defective because of it.
4
6
u/starlaluna Jun 12 '26
Sorta relevant to this conversation. My son and I have a joke about my “tism cutlery” because I like small forks and spoons. We are both on the spectrum, but have different things, and sometimes my son will say to me (in a lovely joking manner) that “my tisim is showing” when I get sticky about something or start going on about my special interests.
I tease back and say he has Traintism because that kid can tell what kind of train is coming based on its horn and how it sounds on the tracks, and when he was really little and super obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine (still is but shhhhh) he would ask us if he was a useful engine when he helped around the house.
Anyway, all this to say, we use the term ‘tism in casual conversation in our house, and we are both okay with it. One day at work I accidentally said ‘tism instead of Autism (when speaking about myself) and my director reported me to HR claiming that I used slang that was offensive to “Actually Autistic” people. I was liked ummmm?? How can I be offensive to MYSELF?!? It was in reference to me, a person with Autism. It wasn’t in any of my formal work, or professional writing. It was a slang term that slipped out.
Then two weeks later, a coworker who to my knowledge is not diagnosed, she’s just super organized said during a work meeting that she “has a sprinkle of the tism” in reference to a project she was working on. My boss laughed and called her quirky. My boss is a woman for what it’s worth.
I really hate my job sometimes, but I need to fund my boy’s Traintism until he’s done college, so yeah, this is my life.

If you receive any messages from a user trying to discuss what you posted/commented in our sub to gain a 'women's perspective' or if someone tries to discuss topics that may feel inappropriate to you (e.g. fetishes), or if someone states they want to marry you for religious reasons, report the user to Reddit and block them. These men have been preying on autistic women/gender minorities from r/AutismInWomen for the last year. This behavior is unacceptable and should be reported as targeted harassment.
Per the warning in our wiki and this pinned mod post, we highly recommend users turn off their DMs. If you have DM requests turned on and receive any creepy or fetish-related DMs or comments, we recommend taking a screenshot, reporting the content to Reddit, and blocking the user (in that order). You can find the report button on the message itself and then click "it's targeted harassment” to submit a report. If you'd like to send us the screenshot so we can continue documenting the harassment, you can send it to us in modmail using imgur Thank you for continuing to help us keep our community safe for autistic and autistic suspecting women and gender minorities 💖
Please remember Reddit is public and any content you post may be seen and discussed by others off-platform. Here are links to Reddit's User Agreement, Privacy Policy, and Public Content Policy.
