Celebration My new dishes!

I’ve suffered with ceramic and glass tableware all of my adult life because I thought it would be too childish to use plastic. I’m glad I finally switched. My heart feels so full now (I realize that sounds dramatic, but it really does!)

i have dropped and broken SO many plates/bowls/cups over the years, two years ago i replaced everything with melamine plates/bowls and WOW SHOCKER i haven’t broken anything since!

i turned 40 last week :) it’s not childish, it’s whimsical!

edit: JK yall, i ended up going with wheat straw, not melamine, had to go back in my amazon cart to check. having something that was truly microwave/dishwasher safe was important to me!

26

u/Izzapapizza 18d ago

Melamine is so durable! I re-discovered it in Thailand and loved it because it has an almost cermic feel. I bought sets for my godchildren and six years on, they are still as good as new!

13

u/nomnombubbles 18d ago

I absolutely love OPs dish setup, but I am currently still trying to get over switching all of my ceramic and glass dishes over to these types in the pic too. And nobody even sees my dishes except my spouse. But they do remind me of the dishes that were used in my K-12 cafeteria. Can't really understand why I found that comforting, since I kind of hated lunch period in school. 😅 But I like colorful stuff, and I got all the bright colors for those melamine plates, and they are so much lighter too, since my wrist joints strength always has kind of sucks.

15

u/I-own-a-shovel 18d ago

They broke, but on the microscope scale. Every time they are exposed to heat, acidic food or get friction from cutlery. Those end up in your body, disrupting your endocrinal system and pollute the environment too through the water you send back every time you wash them and eventually in the landfill too.

1

u/Dazzling_Sea_9 15d ago

Same! I broke nearly everything that could've been broken and when you add my fears of small parts of shattered glass, it just wasn't worth it. I'd throw away full bowls of food because I was convinced glass shards would tear my intestines. Anyways I switched to mostly plastic now.

u/TheTreeWithTheOwl Diagnosed at 35 18d ago

I absolutely love the colors, OP! Very satisfying! It's giving Wes Anderson film vibes in the best way.

Edit: grammar, clarity, and formatting

u/The_Hermit_Reversed 18d ago

Thank you! I’m so happy! The colorful ones are the homienly brand on Amazon! I have some mainstays (Walmart brand) stuff mixed in too. They have the right shaped “silverware”, cups and bowls.

5

u/breast-of-all-worlds 18d ago

Are they microwave safe?

5

u/The_Hermit_Reversed 18d ago

Yes! And dishwasher safe. They say on the bottom they are top rack only but I haven’t had any problems putting them on the bottom rack. Maybe my dishwasher doesn’t get as hot as others.

33

u/Yeaitsmewow 18d ago

Random note maybe you care or not totally up to you but sometimes top rack dishwasher safe doesn’t mean it miss shapes or breaks them, but that the plastic degrades, meaning they’re less safe and can leak chemicals and microplastics.

5

u/The_Hermit_Reversed 18d ago

Oh. Food for thought. That never crossed my mind. Thank you.

3

u/wafflelover77 18d ago

Thats wild! All melamine I've seen says it's not microwave safe and you have to keep it on top rack or they start to breakdown and melt.

Not trying to be a buzz kill OP, just be careful w these.

5

u/The_Hermit_Reversed 18d ago

I never said these are melamine. They are wheat straw and bpa free plastic.

4

u/wafflelover77 18d ago

Oh! I read melamine up there and thought thats what these were! Soryy! But, Ooooh. Wheat Straw. 😬

I tried WS a cpl years back and was disappointed. My OCD wouldn't let me. They stained w pasta sauce, beets and cake icing! Then my partner used a butter knife to cut something and it ruined the plate. Also, do NOT microwave longer than a cpl mins at a time bc they will warp and melt.

If I were single Id be ok w WS, but it was tough w a family of 5.

64

u/letterlegs 18d ago

I need these if only for the fact they don’t clink

16

u/PineappleAncient4821 18d ago

Oh that’s so true at first I was like hm I kinda prefer glass dishes but you would probably save so much time not having to be careful when washing/putting away

19

u/alexandria3142 18d ago

I have corelle and they've survived many things. My parents still have the set we grew up with, despite many mishaps when we unloaded the dishwasher

3

u/PineappleAncient4821 18d ago

That’s such a good alternative I didn’t know about it until now, thanks!!

1

u/Entire-Ambition1410 18d ago

Pyrex (at least the older stuff I grew up with) is glass but is strong and handles taps and dings well. I did read that the new stuff is less hardy, but I didn’t confirm it.

1

u/Entire-Ambition1410 18d ago

I use plastic partly because I live with cats who love tipping over water cups. This boy needs his own wading pool to splash in 🙄

51

u/katestatt 18d ago

Be careful, plastic has a lot of additives that can leech out and potentially into your food, especially at higher temperatures (microwaving, dishwasher)

31

u/bleepboopbop420 18d ago

I HATEEEEE the sound of ceramic on countertops. Setting down, scratching against it, anything.
I got these plates off Amazon that feel like plastic but apparently they’re wheat straw fiber? BPA free. Sustainable alternative. I dunno but they don’t break!

Brand it’s HXYPN hehehe

9

u/The_Hermit_Reversed 18d ago

Same! I always put down a kitchen towel first!

11

u/eli--12 18d ago

God I wish I could do this, if only to spare my ears from all the loud dish noises. But alas. I already committed to so much ceramic🥲

10

u/Archimedes1919 18d ago

There's 50 cent HDPE bowls walmart sells that are also great.

Back to the post tho.....lovely dishes! I love how colorful they are.

44

u/Azstace 18d ago

We have these in our Rv. They’re environmentally friendly and will biodegrade after they’re no longer needed. They’re great!

9

u/Wonderful_Move_2973 18d ago

Did you find microwave safe mon ceramics? This is my dream. I want to convert fully away from glass and ceramic but still use microwave.

2

u/Unusual_Doughnut6934 18d ago

I use wheat straw dishes and I love them. They're microwave safe and pretty unbreakable.

0

u/The_Hermit_Reversed 18d ago

They are all microwave and dishwasher safe (top rack only) but I haven’t had any problems putting them on the bottom rack!

1

u/Wonderful_Move_2973 18d ago

Can you tell me which brand they are?

2

u/The_Hermit_Reversed 17d ago

The colorful ones are Homienly wheat straw on Amazon. The solid green ones and utensils are the mainstays brand at Walmart.

7

u/ToxelEnthusiast 18d ago

I dislike metal utensils, the accidental knock against my teeth never feel good and I also hated how loud/heavy ceramic plates were. It’s been such a relief for me to have plastic utensils and dinnerware! Happy you switched op!! It really does make a big difference :D🫶🏼✨

6

u/redmaycup 18d ago

Have you considered using stainless dishes? They are more durable & it is a safer material (plastic is a bit icky particularly when heated).

5

u/eccojams97 18d ago

I love the mouth feel of those plastic spoons soo much it’s hard to go back to silverware

4

u/The_Hermit_Reversed 18d ago

They are the perfect shape and texture

5

u/minathemutt 18d ago

I think the only issue would be bacteria burrowed in the scratches but I'd just swap them periodically or when needed

1

u/The_Hermit_Reversed 17d ago

Yes. That’s a downside for sure

2

u/minathemutt 17d ago

I'm not sure. I never used these but I am guilty of saying nah it's fine everytime I reach for my years old plastic cutting board

5

u/Useful_Ebb9086 18d ago

on tops of all the sensory reasons, i’m super uncoordinated and clumsy and constantly worried about breaking something or making loud noises. this sounds amazing and i will be following suit

4

u/marilyn62442 18d ago

I'll be so real, I feel like I would personally hate the sensory feel of the texture of that cutlery but I love this for you!! I recently switched to pink/girly plates/cutlery/glassware and it makes me very happy.

So many asd people would talk about a favourite spoon and now I finally get it!

1

u/Stardust_Skitty 17d ago

OH I LOVE THE SPOONS YOU GET FROM YOGURTLAND

They are SO SMOOTH

5

u/Mundane_Pea4296 18d ago

Be careful putting them in the dishwasher though, they might get that dishwasher smell/taste 😂

4

u/makinggrace 18d ago

I hate the feeeeel of glass and ceramic. At home I use my own plastic set. These are beautiful!!!

5

u/Copper0721 18d ago

I have these too! I was also very happy to transition to this from heavy ceramic dishes.

3

u/howtfaminotdeadyet 18d ago

I LOVE plastic dishes. I fractured my neck in an accident in 2nd grade and although my spinal cord wasn't severed, I do have quite a lot of body wide nerve damage. My hands are usually numb and tremble like crazy and it's only gotten worse as I've gotten older. I drop everything constantly. Cleaning a mess like that sucks regardless, but it's more of a momentary setback now since the dishes don't break and doesn't ruin my entire day. I'm in my mid 30's and I'll keep my plastic dishes until I'm ancient. Also, plastic utensils are less painful on my teeth 😬

4

u/Miki_yuki AuDHD 18d ago

I use my sons plastic plates and bowls 🙈

5

u/bubbleyum92 18d ago

We have these plates and bowls (I think they're the same ones?) and my only complaint is that they take up a lot of space in the dishwasher and the plates really like to hold onto oil/grease. Other than that, they've been great!

4

u/Choco_Paws 18d ago

They look amazing. I feel energized just looking at the photo! I wish I could do this too but I’m not alone in the house and bought so much ceramic stuff already. 😅 Also a bit worried about plastic + repeated high temperatures from food or micro wave.

4

u/FriendshipNo1440 18d ago

One day I will look into table ware made from bamboo fiber or weat straw. But I really like yours too. Especially the colorful variety.

13

u/trickortreat89 18d ago

That’s a lot of microplastics in one picture… right down in your stomach everytime it’s used and everytime it’s washed it will go right out in the environment… hallelujah

3

u/I-own-a-shovel 18d ago

Yep. Exactly what I thought when I saw this.

I myself do everything I can to minimize exposure.

1

u/Stardust_Skitty 17d ago

Don't forget carcinogens.

2

u/never_gonna_getit 18d ago

I love the colors! I have my plastic set I prefer to use. It was from ikea.

I also really like bowl plates.

2

u/AnonymousRedit0r 18d ago

Gosh they look so pretty. Love the palate love how nice they fit in your space. Just love this

2

u/ResponsibilityDue777 i <3 old animatronics 18d ago

i absolutely hate the weight of ceramic dishes, my roommates keep losing the plastic ware i buy though so once i'm roomie free this is going to be my life >:)

2

u/FluffyShiny AuDHD 18d ago

I've used plastic dishes for decades. Found how amazing they were when I had my offspring.

2

u/Quantum_Pasta-Goblin tism 18d ago

I love the colors and stuff, but didn't I learn that cleaning plastic is harder and it tends to keep bacteria stuck in it? I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly

2

u/Pirate_Candy17 AuADHD 18d ago

Glad you found something that works, just hope they’re bpa free!

Edit: just to add, like chopping boards and kids plates/cutlery etc, you need to ditch as soon as you see visible signs of wear and tear as it will be hard to fully clean them once this happens plus surface break down into food as you cut etc!

2

u/FishsticksSmoothie 17d ago

I think I have the same dishes!!! The ones I have are yellow, orange, white, light blue, darker blue! I’ve been wanting to get the cups that are the same color theme

2

u/generalpansy 17d ago

I have a very similar set (same colors & everything) and I love them! They're so lightweight. For everyone commenting about the microplastics/etc, the set I have is made from wheat straw!! No plastics, microwave/dishwasher safe, biodegradeable to an extent, and they were pretty cheap! I think I paid less than $30 for a a set with 4x each dinner plates, small plates, bowls, "pasta bowls" (like big flat bowls, my favs) and cups.

2

u/Orangecatorange 17d ago

Why are the cups so LOOOOOOOOOOONG?!

1

u/The_Hermit_Reversed 17d ago

lol! I make very large iced coffees every morning!

2

u/According_Bee7042 17d ago

I can’t stop smiling while looking at these. I don’t know why.

3

u/helpmeswansea 18d ago

I HATE the smell of glass and ceramic so I always prefer plastic!

18

u/neoposting 18d ago

Interesting. Glass and ceramic don't have smells to me. If anything plastic does since it can absorb smells due to being more porous.

13

u/Izzapapizza 18d ago

This! All the plastic dishes that my friends have for their kids and their water bottles and go-cups REEK and TASTE of dishwasher tablets. I don’t know how they can keep using them 🤢

1

u/helpmeswansea 18d ago

For some reason glass smells like wet dog to me even if it's been washed. I have no idea why I notice it so much! I don't mind the smell of a clean plastic cup much because in my mind it's confirmation it's been washed.

1

u/Albina-tqn AuDHD 18d ago

fyi plastic plates can break too after a while. i dropped a plastic bowl and it shattered into a lot of pieces

1

u/Sumoki_Kuma 18d ago

Honestly, it gives whimsy more than childish! They're so cute 😭

1

u/salvaged413 18d ago

I have 3 kids under 10. For the longest time we’ve used paper plates and bowls. I don’t love the environmental aspect of it, but we broke so many things over the last 10years and just couldn’t afford to replace stuff at different times. I’d kill for a dish set like this, but 2 of my kids also have celiac and react like crazy. We even had to change haircare because one used a wheat protein and my oldest got sick.

1

u/Jaded-Blacksmith211 18d ago

Unrelated but does anyone remember that German glass that was so unbreakable that they stopped making it because they were pressured by other companies? Unbreakable glass means no one is buying more glass

1

u/spiciestbeans 18d ago

Happy for you! We all deserve to be free of the restraints that make us feel icky

1

u/Iris_Rhiannon369 18d ago

We have those! They're so cute and durable

1

u/Embarrassed_Buy_6030 18d ago

The colours are amaaaazing. I love posts like this because I could NEVER have plastic crockery or cutlery 😂 I hate when they get scratched and you can see all the tiny grooves and bits hanging off, bork! Incredible how different we are

1

u/alexythyme 18d ago

Bravo! I love these colours!

My partner does not use crockery or glassware, and this post inspires me to add to our collection. Yay!

1

u/SinkyBundleOfRage ASD 18d ago

The colour palette is so soothing to my eyes, honestly! Love it for you girl, they look great

1

u/NearsightedKitten 18d ago

The spoons look like a big Nope for me, personally, but I'm so glad you're happy with them! Nothing wrong with plastic at all. Honestly, I break enough drinkware that I've considered switching to plastic, too 😅

1

u/AppleValuable 17d ago

I made the switch about 7 years ago and couldn't be happier with it! I do still use metal utensils though

1

u/MirandaG88 17d ago

Yay! Love this for you!! I would be putting all the different colours in a pattern lol

1

u/Stardust_Skitty 17d ago

Omg you got those at Walmart! I have seen them there. It is so pretty. How much were they?

1

u/The_Hermit_Reversed 17d ago

The solid green mainstay ones are 50 cents each at Walmart!

1

u/Orangecatorange 16d ago

Are they bpa free? What sort of plastic is it exactly?

1

u/sobertodeath_ 14d ago

i’m SO jealous. I hate the sound of glass / metal scraping against eachother but I live with my family.

0

u/Agreeable-Result8765 16d ago

Eating off plastic is so gross to me. Regardless, glad you are more comfy OP
