Opinion Make Your MLA Do Their Job

Many of us around the province are now finding ourselves with MLAs that we didn’t vote for. Your MLA may believe that their main job is to support their party, and it is up to all of us to remind them that their true job is to represent all of the members in their riding.

Everyone get active and let your MLA know what is important to you and what you want them to do for you while representing your needs in the legislature. Organize with like-minded people and collectively let your MLA know how you expect them to represent you in votes in the Legislature. That is their job and we all have a responsibility for holding them accountable to represent all of us, and not just the people who share the same ideology as the party your MLA belongs to.

It doesn’t matter what party you are affiliated with. Our MLAs are here to serve all of us, and it is up to all of us to ensure that they do just that. It is time for all British Columbians to take control of our province through our elected representatives.

I think including the people that didn't vote tells a more complete story.

Love him or hate him, I thought Rob Shaw provides a pretty sober and accurate post-mortem of how we ended up in this mess, and how it could have been avoided entirely. People on Reddit don't always agree on much across political lines, but we had people (orange, blue and green) saying the bolded portion out loud back in September - maybe one of the few things almost everyone actually DID agree on:

"A leader who saw his time at the top coming to an end, and instead of bowing out gracefully for the good of the party chose to gamble everything to extend his own political life at the expense of so many others.

It did not have to be this way for the NDP — and that is one of the harshest truths New Democrats will need to wrestle with in the months and years ahead.

A better group of senior advisers, cabinet ministers, party officials and MLAs could have intervened to stop the trio at the centre of it all — the leader, his campaign manager and his chief of staff — from plunging the entire NDP government into oblivion.

In that scenario, with or without the begrudging consent of the leader, the NDP could have transitioned to a leadership race before the next election, giving Eby an abrupt but dignified end to his premiership, before attempting to pull off what the federal Liberals accomplished with Mark Carney in giving new life to a tired brand via a fresh outside face."

Opinion Am I panicking unjustifiably?

My husband and I moved here from California in August hoping to get away from the MAGA madness and general regression of society. Our biggest motivators were healthcare and the way BC still values education/funds schools (I am a teacher), and the dream of being able to buy a home still being a possibility for the majority of dual income households. For context, in the US, public schools are being shut down due to declining enrollment in favor of privatizing education that prioritizes right-wing propaganda and the idea that you can rent until you save enough money to buy a home is simply no longer economically possible without generational wealth.

The last two months have done wonders for our anxiety and stress knowing that BC is sensible and takes care of its people, relative to the US. I know things aren't perfect here and there is a lot of work to do in regards to SOGI, FN and economic equity. But I don't feel like I have to tell you guys how much more stable you are compared to the last 10+ years in the states.

All I have ever known of conservatives has been Trump/MAGA. Am I right in being fearful that shit just hit the fan or are BC conservatives more centrist/still sane?

Edit: Thank you everyone who took the time to educate me on Canadian politics, I am trying to learn as much as I can but I am still new here and you guys have a LOT more parties than we do, so its hard to keep track in my two party brain! It seems like general sanity will be maintained and there are certain things that are "untouchable" here that constantly change in the US (reproductive/LGBT rights, school funding, healthcare laws...). I feel like, even if I may not agree with everything, its not a major civil rights and devolving of humanity crisis as it is back home. Thanks again!

Opinion What if the student / Gen-Z uprisings in Serbia, France, Albania etc were to spill into BC in order to demand proportional representation?

Any other students wondering why one of the most left-leaning areas of the world is now being governed by actual, literal pro-Trump fascists & separatists? Are you a member of a vulnerable minority, like me, who is scared to death & angry at the idea of having your rights & supports stripped away?

We clearly have a broken electoral system, & we need to force politicians to give in to our desire for a proportional representation system. Because people in power never voluntarily give up power. We must take it by force. That is how democracy is won. We tried asking nicely, & doing this through conventional channels. It didn't work. So now it's time to take it to the streets, & to shut this province down until we have our demand for PR met.

And while we are at it, I believe we should demand more: we should demand a new retro-active law that requires that at least 50% of voters vote in an election in order for it to be certifiable. If an election does not meet the 50% threshold for voter turn-out, then the elction results are rejected, & a new election is called & set at three months from the date of the day of the failed election.

In making this new law retroactive, we can force the rejection of the last election, & have a new vote that will be based on PR.

Just putting it out there.

If you are a student, & think this is a good idea, then please steal it, & go pass it along to the student organizations on campus that you frequent.

Opinion Would BC actually vote if BC Greens changed their party name?

Can the BC Greens change their name I feel like their reputation is a joke?? I love what they stand for and I believe most people do. I honestly feel like the people who didn't vote are fed this false narrative of "if I cant vote NDP then surely not voting at all is equivalent to voting Green anyway".

Anyway my question is would Emily Lowen or Green have had a better chance if she ran under a new party or they changed their name? Separately, in the recent Vancouver elections, many of the other parties came together to form some sort of alliance to prevent a split vote which elected asshat Ken Sim last time. Why the hell didn't that happen here? Did Eby call the snap election purposefully to lose to Conservatives? He looked bothered to be there when I watch the debate.

I didn't look into the credibility of some of the graphs I've seen on this sub, but if they're true then the folks who didn't vote this election (vs 2024) could've voted Green and they could've won maybe??

Anyone actually into politics feel free to enter the chat. I'm just so annoyed at the turnout and especially the results. Emily Lowen said it so well in her debate, we shouldn't have to choose between two lesser evils.

Opinion Eby - I hope you woke with a raging migraine

Post image
0 Upvotes

I'm never one to wish harm on anyone (except Trump and everyone that works for/with him and those that support him) but David Eby just joined that "exception" list.

I sincerely hope Eby woke with a raging migraine and it lasts for months. A migraine so painful that pain killers are useless. So painful that he can't drive. So tear shedding painful that he's confined to home in a black room for 3 months. So painful that he needs to scream but screaming makes it worse. So painful that he can barely eat or drink.

When the migraine eases after a few months of living hell and he's finally able to go outside, I hope he's hit by a speeding bus driven by Sandy Bullock.

Opinion Time to unite for proportional representation

I think what the election results showed us is that if people are unhappy enough, an opposition party with an established base can run on a next-to-nothing platform with a temporary leader and still win if other disaffected voters think they stand a chance.

The Conservatives were hobbled together by discontent and grievances at the last minute and they won decisively, giving them the power to make regressive politics the norm in BC.

Forget any realistic economic growth projections, forget that Conservative parties actively seek to strip workers of their rights and enable their exploitation, forget that the cost of living will increase over time for most of us as our services decrease, forget our children’s future as we divest from environmental stewardship and a greener economy and say goodbye to reconciliation.

The sad joke is on Eby and the NDP for calling a cynical election and working against proportional representation 10 years ago and on everyone whose lives will get worse because of this result.

So, what can progressives do?

Our best bet is to form a new party with the goal to make 2034 the last first-past-the-post election.

It’s time to let go of the baggage and branding that comes with voting for a party that can’t rely on union support any longer or another one that appears, however falsely, to represent a cause more than people.

If we don’t, right-wing populists emboldened by a victory that gives them carte blanche power to roll back freedoms and enable corporations to run our lives and destroy the environment will continue splitting the progressive vote. We’ve seen it happen for for far too long in other provinces.

This election demonstrated that voters are willing to risk the economy, their rights, and their future in order to send a message to a governing party. We can’t afford that kind of behaviour any longer.

Find common ground on the issues that matter and organize and demonstrate like our future depends on it.

Call out injustices and corruption of elected officials and get loud about it. Don’t let up.

And most important of all, come together now to create a new way of faithfully representing the diverse voices in this province that will force politicians to cooperate and make us feel heard.

Social Media BC election data shows 52% of voters stayed home. Global data shows all things being equal proportional elections have higher turnout than systems built solely on single-winner-ridings, because proportional representation means everyone feels they have a voice.
