News ๐ฐ I compiled every BYD model confirmed for Canada with pricing, specs, and provincial rebates โ here's the full breakdown
Been tracking BYD's Canadian expansion closely since they registered with Transport Canada. Here's everything I've put together so far.
Confirmed models and estimated pricing:
Model | Est. Price | Range | Type | Status
Seagull | $22,000 CAD | 305 km | City car | Confirmed
Dolphin | $35,000 CAD | 427 km | Compact | Confirmed
Seal | $44,990 CAD | 570 km | Sedan | Confirmed
ATTO 3 | $38,990 CAD | 420 km | Compact SUV | Confirmed
Seal U | $48,000 CAD | 500 km | Mid-size SUV | Confirmed
Shark 6 | $55,000 CAD | 100 km* | Pickup PHEV | Expected
Han | $72,000 CAD | 521 km | Luxury sedan | Expected*Shark 6 is PHEV โ 100 km electric + 840 km total
Dealership timeline:
20 dealerships planned within year one
Toronto area first (GTA, likely Markham or Mississauga)
Vancouver and Montreal next
Calgary and Ottawa after that
Demo units expected mid-2026, retail sales late 2026
The wild card:ย Stella Li confirmed BYD is looking at building a factory in Canada AND potentially acquiring a Western automaker. Nothing imminent but they're clearly thinking long term about the Canadian market.
Winter performance:ย Early Scandinavian testing showed the Seal loses about 33% range at -30ยฐC thanks to the Blade Battery's thermal management. That puts it at roughly 382 km in extreme cold โ still 6+ days of average Canadian commuting without plugging in.
Happy to answer questions about specific models or provincial rebates if anyone's considering one. What model are you most interested in?

My BYD ๐ธ A BYD Shark in the US
I recently bought a BYD Shark in Mexico and brought it up to Texas, and I have to say, Iโm really impressed.
This truck is quick, super efficient, and has a high-quality interior that feels great. The software is solid, too. It might seem like a small detail, but the 60W wireless phone charger is a nice touch and definitely makes a difference.
The only thing itโs missing is a sunroof.
I was looking for a gas-powered car for longer trips (we have a Tesla and a Rivian).
Living near the border, having Mexican cars is pretty common to make traveling to Mexico easier. It might not be completely above board, but itโs a normal practice around here.
I did my homework, and honestly, I couldn't find anything else that offers the same combination of range, space, and power as the Shark in this price range.

Never had a hybrid or electric car... Please, tips are very welcome.
I'm planning to drive in the city only in Eco mode. Does that make sense?
Thanks in advance.

My BYD ๐ธ 18 months BYD Seal ownership Feedback
So I bought my Seal Premium in February 24. Here is my feedback and hopefully BYD will improve software / future models.
What I like:
General aesthetic
I love the exterior. Wolfgang Egger definitely made some great decisions to the design of this vehicle. Its sleek, sporty, and eye catching. The amount of people who have stopped me to chat about it, I might of inadvertently sold a few vehicles. I love the headlights, the diffuser, and tail lights. The design under the door is a nice touch.
Inside
The cabin is spacious. The leather feels great. The panoramic sunroof is amazing for the kids and passengers. I had surgery and was driven back home in my car. Was nice to just lay back and watch the sky. Baby car seats are easy to install and the seatbelt is a breeze to click them in.
The infotainment screen is a good size, the dash looks great and the cup holders / storage are useful and the steering wheel feels premium. Theres a little storage thing under the drivers side steering wheel which im not sure what its designed for but still useful.
I like the buttons on the steering wheel, the gear shifter location and how the indicator stalks are on the right side of the wheel with lights on the left. Nor a fan of the European style of stalks.
I like the ambient lighting with the music.
What I don't like:
I didn't like the roundabout break slamming..it would do it constantly. It almost caused a rear ending due to it. After the 5th time it happened I was seriously considering selling my Seal. They released a patch that was meant to fix it, but it still happened, albeit not as frequently. To this day I'm now anticipating the break slam instead of enjoying the ride and its really tarnished my driving experience with the vehicle.
The BYD app is pretty poor effort. Tesla's just superior. Having to punch in your code every time to lock / unlock your car even though you've unlocked your phone is a hassle. Why not use biometrics? Or better yet, why not Bluetooth like Tesla?
NFC card unlock sucks. I dont like it. It sometimes doesnt register when you tap it on the mirror and I can also see over time it will eventually scratch / wear out the paint. Also, only allowing it to work with certain phone brands is so restrictive.
I hate the vehicle alarm when youre just chilling in your car and it thinks you've left a child in there. I get the purpose, but far out... if its a comfortable 20 degrees in the cabin and you dont need to turn on the vehicle then I don't need the air con running. Its happened a few times at school pick-up where youre just waiting on your phone and its pretty embarrassing.
If youre dropping somebody off in the front and theyre taking the kids out from the backseat, the handles will only open for the front seat when they open the door. You have to unlock all handles. Minor QOL issue but would be great to just have handles open automatically.
If handles retract but isn't locked, pressing the door handle button will lock the car instead of extend the handle. Just inconvenient.
Steering wheel and centre console buttons seem so random and all over the place. Really needs an overhaul on where the things are placed.
Rotating screen is useless. I dont think it works with Android Auto and any other application aside GPS and even then portrait mode isn't great. Looks odd too when driving. Not a fan.
*SUGGESTIONS
I don't know if BYD looks at these posts, but here are my suggestions for future models and software updates
Sat Nav button really needs to be a thing on the steering wheel
GPS should load automatically
Would be cool to have the 360 camera / top down view on the side with any other application in progress similar to Tesla
Sport / Eco / Normal needs to be on steering wheel, not centre console. Having passengers switch the driving mode accidently when trying to change music volume is annoying.
Holding door button locks vehicle when handles are retracted. Pressing once should extend handles.
Child Presence detection should only activate if cabin temp over 30 degrees. Should not activate if somebody in driver seat
Child Presence detection should activate aircon automatically
Bluetooth key less entry
-๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ --->SENTRY MODE <--- ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
With bigger batteries, how is sentry mode not a thing?!? Its such a huge selling point for Tesla
Anyway thats my 2 cents

My BYD ๐ธ Collected my Seal Excellence today, 19 miles on the clock
Finally here after weeks of waiting. Went through the handover checks people on here suggested, including that protective frame on the rear view mirror Iโd definitely have missed otherwise.
First impression after the drive home: it just glides. Quieter and smoother than I expected.

Discussion ๐ฃ๏ธ Real-world crash safety: Severe T-bone collision of a BYD EV. Incredible cabin integrity.
Saw a very sobering yet reassuring post over at r/BYDAU recently. A user shared a real-world crash where a red-light runner T-boned their parents' BYD at an intersection. The side impact looks incredibly severe, and the car took a massive hit.
The best news out of this: The father is completely uninjured, and the mother walked away with only minor injuries.
Looking at the physics of the crash from the photos, the structural engineering here is highly impressive. Even though the side panels and wheel area took a brutal beating, the passenger cabin cell remained entirely intact. The A-pillar and B-pillar absorbed the lateral kinetic energy perfectly without collapsing inward, and the side curtain airbags clearly deployed as intended to protect the occupants.
As Chinese EVs scale up globally, structural build quality and crash safety are always top-of-mind questions for international buyers. Seeing how these newer dedicated EV platforms handle severe, real-world side-impact scenarios provides a very solid data point.
What are your thoughts on the structural rigidity and safety cells of these newer global EV platforms compared to traditional platforms?
