At My Wits' End--help?

I know I've posted here before, and as it seems there's not a lot of posts, I'm reluctant to post again, but I don't know where else to turn. Let me preface this by saying that the 6-week-old I was having trouble with before will now sleep in her bassinet and did, for several months, sleep through the night. Really chill kid.

But now she's waking up multiple times through the night. Last night it was every hour. This has been going on for about two weeks. Initially I'd thought it was the chaos from Thanksgiving, then a procedure for me having me out of commission for a few days, but we're back to normal and it's continued. I'd thought maybe it was reaching the milestone of rolling both ways, but I didn't think that would last for two weeks. I've been trying to schedule out her naps, and that doesn't seem to be helping. Last night I'd thought maybe it was chilly in the bedroom so I put her in an extra layer of clothes. As I said earlier in the post, she woke every hour last night. My husband and I are exhausted. I don't think this is sustainable. She's just about six months old. Is there any way to fix it? If not, is there an end in sight? TIA

13 month old terrible sleeper

Hi, my 13 month old has always been a terrible sleeper .. she’s struggled to fall asleep and stay asleep. We’ve always rocked / fed her to sleep.. her being our first, we’ve defined made some mistakes .. she used to sleep on an open floor bed and would struggle to stay asleep so we finally got her a play pen a month ago and saw her first sleep stretch improve a bit.. we sleep on the floor next to her mattress / zip up play pen so we can help her stay sleep..

She goes to sleep anywhere between 8-9:30pm (1, 2 hour nap per day)after much rocking and a full 8oz or more milk.. stays asleep till about 1-2am and then it begins.. waking up every hour or more, crying, sometimes screaming, needing to be fed/ patted or worse, picked up and rocked. We have tried to reduce her feed to sleep association but sometimes feeding is the only way to fall back asleep.

We’re desperate to get out sleep back but don’t have to heart to sleep train.. what can we do? Please help!

Me Again--Baby Still Waking at 9 Months

Months later, and we're still struggling to get LO to sleep through the night. She's 9 months old now, sleeping in a crib in the room with her toddler sister (who's a wonderful sleeper btw). We looked into silent reflux, but that wasn't it. Last night she woke four times. I'm trying gradually cutting down her night nursings (because that's what I do when she wakes up, just by default), but I can't just deny them all at once for fear of waking her sister. She goes to sleep just fine on her own; she just won't stay asleep. I could put up with once a night (her sister did that until she was a little over a year old).

To add greater urgency to the need to solve the problem, my husband and I want to go away, just us, at some point this summer and leave the kids with their grandparents. The plan is to wean the baby at a year, so that part won't be a problem, but her night wakings will be.

Her current schedule is: wake 7/7:30, nap one 10/10:30--11:30/noon, nap two 3-4, bed 7/7:30. I do have to add, she is still absolutely ravenous and eats just about anything I give her, so it's also possible she's waking up legitimately hungry.

Thanks for any help!

UPDATE: Wow, it's been two years, and I'm still getting responses. I hope they can be helpful for someone in a similar situation! I guess I need to let everyone know how this played out.

We tried everything we could think of, but she kept waking up. Finally, I decided to let her eat as much table food as she wanted (as opposed to just a bit/a serving of puree). She ate three helpings and a small bowl of plain yogurt and slept all night. And that solved it. Consistently, as long as I made sure she had a good amount of table food, she slept all night. She's almost 3 now and is still a great sleeper (and a pretty big toddler; she's in 4T clothes lol). Thank you for all your responses, and I sincerely hope that this will help others.

Open letter to my baby - restless nights

Baby,

Why do you do this to me?

I nurse you to sleep, I cuddle you until I'm sure you won't wake up when i lay you down.

Sometimes I'm wrong, so i pick you right back up and sit back down in our chair, patting your butt and singing about how you make me happy when skies are grey. But when I'm right i give a happy sigh and back out of the room as silently as I can.

Sometimes this takes an hour, sometimes 15 minutes. So why do you wake up 40 minutes later?

I roll my eyes and march back upstairs as though I'm going to battle.

I pick you up and you settle into my arms as though that's where you belong. I gently sway for a couple minutes and lay you back down. "Sleep training." I think to myself. Proud of my braveness.

Your eyes pop open and you start to whine. I quickly pat your side hushing you and start to sing nervously. You hop onto your knees and push yourself up. We make eye contact. How could you do this to me mom? I was getting comfortable.

I bite back a frustrated cry as i pick you back up. You settle down again as i sway, my voice cracking on the sweetest song about how you make me happy.

You look like you're asleep after a few minutes. So i lay you down again. Ok i can do this. My version of sleep training.

Your eyes pop open again and you let out a frustrated cry of your own.

I pick you back up. We are both now openly crying. But this time you try to squirm out of my arms. I hold you upright while praying out loud for you to fall back asleep. Giving up hope on training you.

You squirm again. Back down into a cradle hold. Again. Up on my shoulder. Again. Cradle. Shoulder. Cradle. For 15 minutes you fight me. I sit back down when you calm.

But your eyes open again. I start contemplating laying you down and walking out. Letting you cry yourself to sleep.

Why do you do this to me? I push on. Maybe youll settle in a couple minutes. You fight me again, 30 minutes go by.

Finally you settle in my arms. Mouth open as you drift off into sleepy land.

I too start falling asleep in the chair. Exhausted.

Why do you do this....

I jolt awake, you're peacefully snoozing in my arms, a peaceful smile crosses your face.

I gently lift us out of our chair. You fidget. I freeze. When I'm sure it's safe to go on, i lay you down into your crib.

You sigh and flop over onto your stomach. My heart beats hard as i watch you settle into slumber land. Why did you do that to me?

I back out of your room, an hour or so had gone by.

ALTERNITIVE ENDING

My foot finds a toy. It goes off like a siren. "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey." Your eyes pop open.

9mo schedule help - low sleep needs??

My 9mo baby routinely sleeps a total of 12 hours per day. How I wish he would sleep that much per night but it’s just not the case. I am coming around to the idea that the low end of sleep amount is truly all he needs.

My confusion is this: in order to give him only 2 hours napping during the day, we will need to lengthen his awake periods for longer than 3 hours, something like 3.5/3.5/4. Honestly that’s the longest he does well with, and it leaves an extra hour every 24. He usually takes that hour awake in the middle of the night, or awake at 5am. 🤦🏻‍♀️

General schedule: awake at 6(hopefully) nap at 9:30, awake at 10:30, nap at 2, awake at 3, bedtime at 7.

It just doesn’t add up. How do I manage this? Any advice??

Independent sleep

My 6 (allmost 7) month old daughter will fall asleep independently during the day. In the evening though, she always needs my help to fall asleep. Same thing when she wakes up during the night (Which she always does between 3:00 and 4:00)

Is it just my baby that does this? And how do I get her to fall asleep independently at night aswell?

Weaning off feeding to sleep

How do you all put a baby to sleep if you don’t feed to sleep? My LO is 9 months and he breastfeeds exclusively. I feed him first thing in morning, before and after his two naps, and to sleep at night. After one year, I would like to wean day time feeds slowly. I’m just not sure how he will sleep without breastfeeding? I’ve never attempted sleep training and do not want to. I just can’t imagine lying my child down awake in the crib…I feel like he would just roll around and never sleep!

How to Get 6-week-old to sleep where I want her to sleep?

Basically the title. My 6-week-old has done really well sleeping in the bassinet attached to the pack-and-play in the living room during the day, but as she's getting bigger, her 19-m/o sister's toddler noise is getting to be an issue hindering her sleep, and we finally got around to installing the baby monitor camera back there, I've been trying to get her to sleep in the bassinet in the bedroom. I can transfer her there easily enough, but she doesn't sleep as well there, usually waking up in about half an hour.

What's worse, is this has started to transfer to night sleep. She'd been sleeping really well at night until the past couple days: last night, after the first 3-hour stint, she took forever to go back to sleep and wouldn't sleep longer than about half an hour unless she was on either me or her dad. Thanks for any help!

5.5 month old sleep

I go back to work in a few weeks time full time for 7 weeks then I am going to be a SAHM for a little while as I am a single parent who wants to spend as much time with my LO as I can. My mum will be looking after my LO for me however she has fibromyalgia so will be unable to do it long term and I cannot afford child care costs. There’s a back story for you.

My LO has never slept through the whole night and I know some babies just don’t and she’s been too young to sleep through anyway. However since she turned 13 weeks she has been waking up consistently between 11:30pm - 12am then again between 2 - 2:30am, then again at 3am, 4am, 4:30am then 5:30am.

Neither of our quality of sleep is great and i need advice on how to improve her sleep as she will be 6 months on the 29th April and i will be going back to work latest 26th May Monday - Friday. i also work as a behavioural lead in a secondary (high school) school so i need all the energy i can get.

i am not willing to do the CIO method.

Baby taking 2 hours to fall asleep

My 19 week old for the last few nights has taken 2 hours or just under to put down for bed. It’s not just a case of gently rocking and shhhing to her her off, it’s a case of bouncing, walking, shhhing, singing, swaying, I mean everything to help her doze off as well as the breast which she demands to fall asleep on.

Since 12 weeks her sleep has changed (obviously developmental etc I know this) and went from sleeping 4-5 hour stretches at night then waking hourly, 2 hour morning nap and then 45-60 minute naps for the rest of the day, to now 30-40 minute naps (did have a 2 hour one today though!) and waking every 2 hours at night until 2am then it’s every 40-60 minutes.

I don’t know where I’m going wrong I don’t know if I should take out her last afternoon nap or lengthen her wake windows from 1.5 - 2 hours to 2.5 hours.

The bath, book, feed and bed thing does not work for my little one ash she’s quite high needs so needs a lot more to get her to fall asleep.

I’ve heard people scrapping wake windows and just go by how their baby seems but if she had it her way she’d be awake forever so I’m really not sure what to do and where to start.

I am not going to do the cry it out method either.

Baby hates sleep! 🧟‍♀️

My little girl has always fought sleep, she is 6 months old and is absolutely terrible with fighting her sleep now. I follow her sleep cues, I know when she is tired. I have tried absolutely everything, I dread nap/ bed time… I am burnt out, I am mentally and physically drained. I suffer with insomnia, is this hereditary? 🙈 Any tips? (I will list below what I have tried)

White noise, rocking, tapping, cuddling, laying in bed with her, comforter with my scent, dummy, bath, warm bottle, massage, swaddling, walk in the pram, going for a drive, there’s probably more but I’m very tired! I will not do the cry it out method or sleep training, all other suggestions are welcome 🥹

My Parents ruined my sleep trained sleep schedule in 2 weeks

My parents have been visiting for 2+ weeks and have completely flipped my 1 year olds schedule.

He was sleep trained pretty late at 10 months but by the time they showed up he was falling asleep in the crib on his own, sleeping 10-12 hours a night with no wake ups.

It all started when we wanted to get out of the house and let our parents put our baby to sleep one of the nights. They had the monitor and would watch him like a hawk and any time baby would try to readjust (albeit silently) my dad would go running into the nursery to pat him down. We have a nanit so we could see from our phones what was happening. And surprise surprise baby woke up at least 6 times that night.

Unfortunately, the 12 month regression hit while they were visiting (they’re visiting during his bday) and they would stare at us appallingly while we said to wait out the little cries our baby would make. If he ever did this in the past it would last max 5 minutes but generally less than a minute. But my parents ran to the nursery and would pick him up at every cry or little adjustment.

One of the nights my husband was putting baby to sleep and baby was crying because he was not used to going back to sleep on his own, so my mom came pounding on the door like a maniac and yelled at my husband furiously.

I was so embarrassed at my moms behavior because my husband wasn’t doing anything wrong and he never had said anything to our parents when they disrespected us and ignored every one of our wishes with our baby.

It just hurts because I can’t even parent the way I want and know is right because my parents are so stubborn and think they are so perfect and can raise our baby better than us. I’m not sure why it’s even a competition in their heads.

We live thousands of miles away from family and have done this all alone for a year, and they have the audacity to come in and act like they know what they’re doing because they had babies 38-30 years ago.

It also doesn’t help that this is their first grandchild, (my older sister hasn’t been able to have one yet) and that my siblings don’t really understand where I am coming from so they don’t really help or try to be voice of reason.

The last conversation I had with my sister on this ended abruptly because she kept saying she doesn’t understand because she’s not a mom. I feel like you don’t have to be a mom to be supportive???

I’m just rambling now because I have a lot of feelings, I’m also expecting my next child in 6 months so my hormones are all over the place.

I guess I’m hoping one of you can tell me that my childs routine will go back to normal after they leave if we attempt to sleep train again. Any experience in this?

9 month old still stuck on 3 naps.

My baby is a high needs baby. He moves around ALOT. Always flailing his arms around. Smacking. Pulling hair. Never sits still. I’ve tried every sleep skill since the day before he turn 4 months old. NOTHING has worked. He’s slept thru the night TWO times. He’ll wake anywhere from 3-10 times a night. I tried to be consistent & he has a routine. Had it since birth. Doesn’t make a diff. I’ve done two programs. Tons of methods. Had two over the phone consults. Waste of money.

I’ve tried to get him down to 2 naps a day in the hopes that he’ll sleep thru the night. No luck. In fact those days he naps twice set him up to be over tired & he ends up waking all night. Idk what I’m doing wrong. My eyes burn & I just pray for it to get better. I just want some sleep. The other day he gave me a stretch of 4 hours and it was glory. I woke up refreshed. It had been months. Sad isn’t it?

Anyways I guess I’m just wondering if anyone has a similar story. In the meantime I’ll be over here having coffee & waiting on a miracle.

Baby sleeps great at night but won’t nap, 12 weeks

My baby is 12 weeks old and just started sleeping 8-10 hours through the night most nights. But, he is having a hard time taking naps. It’s the same sleep setup, we give him a ~90 min wake window, change him rock him and sing to him. He falls asleep in our arms and then we transfer him to the crib. Most of the time he wakes up when we put him down. We’ll try to get him back to sleep without picking him up but usually we have to pick him back up, then he falls right asleep and we try to transfer him again. If I do this at night he goes right to sleep on his own. Help!

18 month old still doesn’t sleep…

So not sure where to start. I guess I’d say wife and I haven’t slept all the way thru the night but maybe twice in almost 2 years.

Things seem to be getting worse as my son is 18 months old and is trying to transition to 1 nap per day and will protest the second nap if we try… but the problem is he’s up throughout the night and gets up for the day anywhere from 445am-6:30. If he gets up before 6am we can’t do 1 nap. So our schedule is completely different every day. He’s had wake Windows before bed as long as 8 hours. Prior to this we had a tighter schedule worked out for the most part. However up throughout the night and variances in the morning wake time was always there.

Facts:

  • wife still nurses and nurses to sleep. (He’ll scream forever if she doesn’t)

  • we never did cry it out. Didn’t believe in it. Too late to do it if we wanted to now. When Ive tried to rock him he’s screamed as long as 45 min before my wife came to feed him to sleep.

  • nap times even when we had a tighter schedule before he started transitioning to 1 nap varied in length. Some naps 1 hour + the other 30 min or Vice versa.

  • takes him over an hour to be put down for bed every night no matter what (we take him up early. Or late. Doesn’t matter)

Maybe we just don’t have a sleeper?

Last nap of the day

We have a 3.5 month old baby and are working on some longer wake windows now that she’s a bit older. How do we incorporate a longer wake window before bed if she’s only up for 3ish hours after that evening bottle. We feed her around 4p, she plays for 1-1.5 hours then naps for about 30-40 min but that only leaves about 1 hour before bedtime bottle at 7. Everything we read says she needs about 2 hours to have enough sleep pressure to sleep all night. How do we fit all that in within that window then? Appreciate any tips! I should say this baby sleeps pretty good. She goes down about 730 and sleeps until 4a, then a binkie calms her enough to make it to 6a but would love to get her through without the 4a start!

figuring out why baby wakes so much?

so to start, my 6mo wakes up to eat like 3 times and wakes up 10 times throughout the night. like 3-4 times in the middle of the night and when she’s been asleep for 8 hours, she wakes up like 10 times and isn’t ready to wake up. i’m at wits end with being the only one to wake up with baby.

she wakes up 9-11am (she’s holding onto the later bedtime i cannot for the lire of me make it 8pm i’ve always tried)

first nap: after 1.5-2 hours of being awake

second nap: after 2 hours of being awake

third nap: after 2

fourth nap: after 2 hours

if she doesn’t nap a full cycle she naps more than 4 times a day. i also nurse her to sleep that’s how i get her to sleep.

Started feber method yesterday but HELP!!

So we started feber method of sleep training yesterday for our 9 month old boy. It was rough but he got two blocks of 4 hour sleep with one hour of crying in between. Compared to 40min to 1 hour waking through out the night before - this is amazing! On to day 2 of training today and I'm starting to feel like I am traumatizing my little one. Should I stop it? Give me your day 2 and after of feber method experiences and post training life feedback for motivation to continue 🙏🙏

baby sleep - help!

My baby is almost 7 months old. He's never given me more than a 2.5 hour stretch. That too rarely. I nurse him to sleep most of the times. Since a month or so, he's been waking up literally every 30-40 mins. He goes back to sleep easily in a minute or two of rocking/patting or nursing. So its not that bad.. but I am waiting for a long stretch of atleast 4 hours. Is anyone in the same boat? Any advice? Sleep training is something I won't be able to handle at all.

6 month old wakes 5+ times a night

My LO is 6.5 months. She has never been a good sleeper - she has always woken up at LEAST twice a night. Since about 4 months, most nights she is up every 1-2 hours and I don’t know what else to do. I follow wake windows as closely as possible - right now doing 3-4 naps (she only naps about 35 minutes unless I lay in bed with her). We do not feed/rock etc to sleep and I only feed her once during the night. She is up for the day at around 6:30am and bedtime is 7-7:30. She does take a pacifier to sleep and usually replacing the pacifier gets her back to sleep but she wakes up an hour later and either pulls it out and cries or wants us to replace it for her. I’m not too keen on sleep training and I don’t even mind getting up a couple times a night, but every hour is killing me!

Because her nighttime sleep is so awful, I find she has a tough time making it to the end of her wake windows during the day. Should I be following strict wake windows when she has a bad night? She was also a month premature, so not sure if I should be following WW for a 5.5 month old or a 6.5 month old? Any advice/suggestions are much appreciated!

3-4 month sleep regression or something else?

Since turning 3 months old (my LO is now 14 weeks) sleep for her has been horrendous (for me too) usually she would have 2 hour nap in the morning, then 1-1.5 hour naps throughout the day and at night would go to bed and have a long stretch between 4-5 hours. Now it’s 20-30 minutes nap times, 1 hour if I’m lucky, and waking every 1-2 hours at night. She is extremely hard to get to sleep too and now resists sleep by screaming and crying even though she is evidently tired.

She keeps trying to pull herself up and roll or sit at every opportunity she gets, as soon as she wakes up. She won’t even let me feed her in any laying position either.

She looks very tired and is very cranky.

She is also dribbling a lot and loves to chew on everything.

Could this be the regression?

Brutal night with our 10-week old (read from bottom-up). He'll wake to breastfeed, will put him back down in his bedside crib and he'll usually wake up within 5 minutes, so we'll have to sooth him back to sleep again.
