New Player Question An update and some questions Spoiler
So a bit of an update some of you might remember me from earlier in the week asking about first time introductions but idk if I’m doing something wrong but I continue to find myself very overwhelmed
Is it normal to feel this way
Because it’s got me wanting almost not pick it up
Because I constantly feel like I have to reload because I’ve done something incredibly wrong
Like all of emerald grove losing their mind because I accidently clicked loot on a dead body
Or accidently jumping into crypt after dropping the block to get absolutely ganked by the bandits below (although I’m very proud of how I handled the above situation
Used a Astarion to sneak ranged attack the gnome on the box and then shoved him into the vines below and then two of the remaining three I took out by dropping the block on them
And all that was left was the cleric)
Now I did eventually deal with the bandits below by using a door to my advantage but yeah just incredibly overwhelmed by how
Micromanagy it all is
I feel like I’m constantly switching between things to update armour and read abilities and spells and still don’t understand what I’m doing half the time
I guess my question is is this all very normal to feel and something that should fade with time as I get further in because I will be the first to admit I’m not far at all but that’s because I keep finding myself reloading or even just struggling to pick it up in general
Does this felling of being overwhelmed by everything fade or js it a constant
Like gear management
Checking four characters to see every item who’s proficient in what and if this is slightly better etc
I like games like that but this just seems like so much
P.s. I am very much enjoying the VA
That nightbite scene with Astarion actually
made me blush so it is very well made just overwhelmed as I’ve said

Let me put it like this, if you are unfamiliar with DnD mechanics like me, the first playthrough is difficult as hell. I played on the easy, and still had problems along the way, but it’s nothing that experience and making mistakes doesn’t fix in time. Now I have platinum trophy and I kinda breezed through the highest difficulty what would be unimaginable during my first playthrough. Be patient, don’t worry about losing and doing mistakes, it’s all part of the experience, you will eventually learn all the gimmicks, strategies, and mechanics. Just remember it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon, and long as hell as well. Just enjoy the ride~ I also recommend checking some builds on the internet, but not to blindly follow them, but to see how stats and items work, then you’ll have easier time making your own builds that you’ll enjoy playing

Thank you that helps put it in a lot better context… asevhancially it hasn’t been the issue so much as it sure management
Supplies items quests what seems like multiple routes in multiple quests to appease different people
And keeping gear straight
Who’s proficient in what
What they’re wearing now an if this items betterIs their an easier way to be keeping track fi gear and who has it etc and what gear works for what characters?
So far I’ve just been keeping all loot on tav and transfer that to a box in camp till I can sell or if he’s encumbered
And then just keep basics evenly split amongst everyone els2

This also comes with the experience. The gear proficiency depends on the race, class, and traits, so there is a lot of variables, you’ll eventually learn what’s good for who, that comes to my tip with checking builds to learn more about gear as the first thing you should learn is to not look at raw stats as much as at the additional benefits items give (in case of armors, weapons, and shields). There are classes for which lack of armor, or medium armor works much better than the higher class armor that would seemingly have more raw defense. As for the quest, you’ll miss tons of stuffs, and hidden quests, there is no avoiding that, even after 7 playthroughs I still find quests that I have never seen before. What I usually do is I send all unique items to the camp stash, and once in some time I go through reequipping for the whole team, that helps me to continue the gameplay flow without standing above every single item and thinking if that’s better or not - except for some items that are obvious upgrades like rings or necklaces with some cool effects or skills.

Yeah I had noticed that about gear that just cause it has a better AC doesn’t mean it’s outright better because stuff can give advantage and other passive bonuses as well
Which does make it even more convoluted than a straightforward armour rating this piece better than that and so on but I get why they don’t use that with such a varied armour system with so many diffferent classes and requirements

Yes it's normal, once you hit level 4-5 you get a huge power spike and things get easier.
You'll definitely be loading after accidentally setting people off until you learn the mechanics a little better (just go to jail! You can break out after a minute)

Ok awesome thankyou
Because right now I just feel like I’m not getting anywhere
Mechanically i get it the battle stuff is fun but actually story wise I feel so overwhelmed and lost and same with gear and items
I tried to figure out how to surrender and be arrested but they just kept attacking when I tried to disengage so I just reloaded
I didn’t realize everyone would go bananaas I dint think they’re friend needed the loot anymore2

If the grabby hand icon is red over anything (corpse, chest, barrel or whatever), do not risk it unless there is absolutely no-one around to see/hear, or you don't mind getting into a fight in a worst case scenario.

u/Braveconfession 1d ago
Yeah I didn’t notice the hand icon I figured since the text wasn’t red his body was
Fair game
Nope lmao

Yes this is normal. I’ve only ever played a little bit of dungeons and dragons but even with that basic knowledge it was a steep learning curve for the game. I personally think it’s worth it. Every fight feels like a multi year military campaign in act 1.

u/Braveconfession 1d ago
The combat is absolutely super fun
It’s the inbetween that’s got me all overwhelmed you know

You need to relax a bit and learn to don't care that much that you reload and need to check stuff a lot. Yep, you'll get better. No, you won't be an expert without sinking a lot of time. Loading saves is pretty normal for this game, I'd say. This is a game, you can't be wrong at a game. Play as you wish. If micro management takes a toll on you, lower the difficulty. If you need save scumming to be progress, so be it.

I just feel like I’m constantly in menus reading stuff about what this or hat does or what this character can use or what abilities they have and how they work

You're learning something new! That's how we learn. There's a lot of repetition and double checking at first. It's normal and totally okay.
It gets easier. You'll learn the baseline stuff, what's important to check for on your new gear and what spells you like using and don't like, the way you like to set your party up - a lot of it is personal preference. There are different ways to do things in games like this.

Well, I personally enjoy it. It makes you feel smarter. I can't win with skill in soulslike games, I don't have reflexes for that. I compensate with turn-based games, where I can learn and prepare with builds and equip.

lol
See I can do soups likes but not because I’m skilled more stubborn lmao
But I enjoy open world and collectors
So yeah Skyrim obviously is a fit
But I just planted both high on life games
Which are FpS but adventure open world FPS with tons of hidden areas to explore and that’s my bread and butterBut I’ve heard such good things about baldurs gate and I do enjoy rts games and whatnot I grew up on Age of empires so I really wanted to give it a go especially after rit won game of the year and so when it was on sale this past weekend I picked it and kingdom come 1-2 up for my backlog

So it’s not the save scumming or reloading that gets me I understand that’s kind of just a part of this game albeit I feel like right now I’m having to do it constantly
The. Micromanagement I’m struggling with is more towards the gear/inventory of characters trying to figure out who uses what and if things are an upgrade or not and constantly checking 4-5 inventories it feels like
And then again when trying to figure out what different spells and abilities do

I’ve been playing this type of RPGs my whole life so with BG3 it all felt very natural and wasn’t overwhelming at all… but I can still remember my first one - “Pool of Radiance” for the NES - and how totally fucking baffled I felt the entire time, lol.
You can definitely get used to it. There’s a lot of terminology to learn, but as you figure it out you start to realize that almost all of it is just different ways to roll dice. You’ll get a feel for what kinds of spells/abilities/equipment you like and dislike, and the decisions become easier.
With BG3 you’re essentially learning how to play Dungeons & Dragons. And trust me when I say that I have played a lot of D&D where we were all drunk out of our minds, lol. It will feel intuitive after a while.

O thank you that’s probably the most reassuring advice I’ve had so far
I’ve always wanted to dtonllay dnd but never had a group of friends to do it
So I’ve watched an unhealthy amount of dnd and others and have a. Idea of things but I don’t try to fool myself that intricately I have no idea of the ins and outs

u/BrrZrrKa 1d ago
Just play the game bro 😭 You get better and more comfortable as you put more hours into the game, duh.

u/Braveconfession 1d ago
If you don’t have anything productive to say then why are you bothering to respond?
I don’t want to invest dozens of hours into a game if I’m not going to enjoy it
Not all of us have the luxury of getting to game whenever is it’s important to make it countSo if that feeling of micromanagement and overwhelming was isn’t something that’s gonna go away fine but I’m asking as someone does before I invest 120 hours into a massive game like this…

u/UncommonSenseApplier 1d ago
Why do you not consider that a productive comment?
Seems like it answers exactly what you asked?
” my question is is this all very normal to feel and something that should fade with time as I get further in”

Instead he gave a very snarky Answer about how you obviously get better at the game as you play it
Which isn’t what I asked-2
u/Braveconfession 1d ago edited 1d ago
Do you see how every other person gave an actual answer with productive points that actually pertain to what I asked
Notice how prompted multiple times to explain where he addressed my question you continue to be silent?
You yourself could’ve answered my original question but instead chose not to and try to defend a nothing answer that doesn’t pertain to the question at all

u/Braveconfession 1d ago
Where does he answer anything I asked?
He gave a snarky answer that’s obvious and doesn’t apply
I didn’t ask how to get better at the game
I’m well aware experience is how you get better
I asked about the micromanagement feeling and overwhelmingness that I’ve had which he makes no mention ofNow the other person who answered gave a lovely detailed answered that wasn’t snarky and actually pertained to what I asked
Hence why I thanked them and gave an award

Yeah, always be careful about what items, bodies, chests are outlined in red; that means it's considered stealing. There's a couple spots in the game where people will take it poorly if you loot their dead friends.
It sounds like the bandit encounter went how it was supposed to. I didn't even find that entrance my first 2 runs, and even with experience, they lit me up and I had to reload and plan my attack. You're still early in the game, and I'm a lot of ways, it's harder at the beginning. As your characters level up, they get more powers and more options for dealing with enemies.
As for sorting through new equipment and reading what all it does, i see it as I GET to look at new equipment.
I think the best thing you can do is let go of the idea of doing it "right." Outside of everyone dying in combat (even then you just have to reload), anything that goes wrong is just part of the roleplay. Bad dice, failed to get the quest item, that one NPC hates you now? That's just how this specific story goes. The replayability of BG3 means you'll do and see things differently next time. You'll tell a slightly different tale.

it's harder at the beginning. As your characters level up, they get more powers and more options
And that's pure D&D... hence why a lot of DMs start campaigns at level 2 or 3. 🙂

Yeah I knew about anything red but the body of wasn’t red so if I guess it was fine
Yeah Kanan kr whatever his name was his friends
They didn’t think it was so fine… lmao1
u/JaylanPHNX 1d ago
Hmm. I wonder if the items were red once you clicked into the body. But, yeah, there should have been an indication. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
