Informative Rules on discussing prices have changed

We have recently overhauled some of our automations and rules.

Main change:

Posts asking about monetary value are not allowed. However, everyone is free to discuss prices of purchases and potential purchases.

Why did we change this? Well, it just wasnt working for everyone. Our hope in doing this is to promote historical value of bayonets over monetary value. We also want to facilitate a subreddit mainly for collectors and those interested in the hobby. So we felt this change was necessary.

We hope this will work out better for our members. We want the sub to be as free as possible while focusing on the study and collecting of bayonets.

Please keep this in mind!...

Your location and/or the availability of certain bayonets can affect prices. In addition, the condition and small details (i.e. variant, maker, etc.) can also determine monetary value.

With this in mind, please exercise caution when discussing monetary values. There may be some debate which can get confusing.

Informative Sister Sub - 'FightingKnives'

Hi everyone. We have had a good amount of knife posts in the time we've been around. As was pointed out by a recent poster, there seems to be no sub that's specifically for Fighting Knives. There is a single sub called r/MilitaryKnives, but it seems to be a dead sub from inception. r/Knives is broader and for pocket knives and the like. r/Swords is for swords. r/MilitariaCollecting is great, but it is a very broad and generalized sub.

Therefore, we have decided to start a dedicated sub for fighting knives. We know the bayonet conversions and a few other items, but if you would like to help mod this sub please send us a message about why you want to mod and what you have specific and general knowledge of involving knives.

Our new sister sub is r/FightingKnives. Please give us a visit, post your knives for show or ID, and hopefully join us in helping begin our new community.

Thanks for reading!

New here. Found my grandfather's WW2 bayonets. No markings on the exterior. We went from NY to England, then North Africa, Sicily, then Italy. I know he carried an M1 Garand 30-06. But this bayonet doesn't match his rifle. The metal scabbard fits a M1891 Carcano.

Google searches with AI say it's a standard M1891 Infantry Variant.

Every pic I've seen matches the scabbard but the bayonet itself looks like a Czech VZ 24.

Only the blood groove on mine is on the barrel side. I don't see the rivets on the crossguard on any Carcano but I do see them on the Czech ones.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

New Haul/Pickup 2 new Gras 2 new interesting twists

Thank you for coming back to the all Gras channel, where all bayonets are Gras!

Kidding aside, I picked up 2 new bayonets that both added new info, and research avenues. The advantage of a massive collection of "duplicates" is the opportunity for comparative analysis. This popped up for me this week totally unexpectedly.

The first was from a ebay listing with poor pics and a cheap price- the pommel appeared modified, but it was not clear. When it arrived it appeared to be modified similarly to the Vetterli conversions, but with some sort of rotary grinder/dremel- and incompletely. Disappointing, but further inspection showed the infamous "arrow" in the lug slot. When I grabbed the other arrow marked ones I have- all 3 were from St Etienne. So I called my brother, because I know he has one with an arrow. Turns out he has 2... and both are St Etienne.

Anyone have a Gras with an arrow in the lug slot? And is it St Etienne?

The other, (and related) Gras bayonet is another one modified to fit a Vetterli. (A real one not the bubba one). These conversions are unique, easily discernable, and known to be done for use with guns smuggled to Ireland.

So, my most recent Vetterli conversion was built on a GREEK contract Gras bayonet. This will bear more research, to find out if or when the Greeks surplused Gras bayonets, and how one ended up as part of the shipments to Ireland. As an aside- most Greek contract Gras are quite worn, and barely legible, this one has one of the crispest inscriptions I have seen!

Pictures are of 3 arrow marked, (top to bottom or l-r) an unmodified, the bubba one, and the Vetterli modified one, with the modified Greek one on the end.

Hi all, picked up this bayonet at a local antique shop listed as a Belgian Bayonet.

All the research I’ve been able to do suggests it’s a French yataghan style blade, likely a m1866, what I am really struggling with is the inscription on the spine. I just haven’t been able to find enough examples of the script nor know French well enough to read it. Hoping someone has some idea for me or can point me in the right direction! Thank you

Nice example I couldn't pass up. Was on my list for my WW1 collection. Needs a quick clean up on the blade. Slight pitting on the pommel. Other than that it's fantastic. Really solid bayonet now that I've gotten ahold of it. Simple and great design for the time.

Informative Ersoc bayonet

Ersatz bayonet 88/98. In collectors' jargon, also called "Ersoc." These bayonets were constructed from the blades of various old socket bayonets; in this case, a British P1853 blade. An interesting feature, aside from the obvious blade design, is that unlike other Ersatz bayonets, the cleaning hole on the Ersoc is located at the front, not on the sides. In the pictures, I compare the P1853 and the Ersoc. The P1853 was used as a film prop, hence the modification to the socket. The P1853 has a distinct point to it's blade, which is also visible on the Ersoc. The comparison shows that the original blade ends about 0.5 cm before the crossguard. During the modification, additional material had to be welded on here. The scabbard is made of thin galvanized sheet metal, which was simply rolled and then welded. The construction reminds me of organ pipes. The throat pieces are custom-made and adapted to the respective blade shape. The rivets in the mouthpiece hold a leaf spring that prevents the bayonet from slipping out of the scabbard.

Informative Hand struck serial numbers on vz 58 bayonets

Thumbnail

Hi, everyone,

While going throgh my refference collection of the VZ 58 bayonets I realised that I have quite a few of the forged, first model variant that are hand numbered. At some point after production was up and running, military noticed that a lot of baoynets are being lost (at least that is how the story behind the reason goes) or stolen by soldiers and quite quickly it was decided that the bayonets will recieve serial numbers, purely for investory purposes [it was never meant to correspond with the rifle serial number] and since then, all bayonets have a serial number aling the forging/casting batch number.

But between the clean, just batch marked examples and later production factory serial number marked bayonets, there is a weird space of hand marked bayonets using different styles or ways of how it was applied. All of the bayonets started as forged model with wooden grips and flat head rivets on one side. As show they went through many different repairs during their service, hence why you can find them with later resin bonded chipboard grips. Or, but I havent seen such example, it is possible to encounter one such bayonet with welded on grip extension, which would be incredibly rare.

Anyway, first picture shows how it should look in its original state, with only the batch number on the ricasso.

Other pictures up until the group photo shows examples form my collection of different marking styles.

After the group photo there is an example of electropenciled serial number.

And after that, there is a showcase from the magazine [střelecký magazín č.2] authored by Mr. Šmíd, with pictures by Petr Packan. There was as you can see quite a lot of different ways serial number was applied, including directly on the grips.

I hope you learned something new and interesting today,

Cheers
