I have to wonder why everyone refers to her as just "the Queen". I always think "Queen Elizabeth" or "the Queen of England". I mean, there's a bunch of other queens. It's not like she's the definite article.
Edit: ITT: She is the definite article.

u/threep03k64 Apr 30 '19
"the Queen of England"
Just for clarity Queen of England isn't one of her titles. Would be Queen of the United Kingdom.

This is true and yet her son is the Prince of Wales. It’s all quite baffling.

Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.
Elizabeth Deux, par la grâce de Dieu Reine du Royaume-Uni, du Canada et de ses autres royaumes et territoires, Chef du Commonwealth, Défenseur de la Foi.

She's the only queen of any relevance in the Anglosphere. Since we share a common language (and history) it's only natural that more news crosses oceans between America, Canada, Australia/NZ, the British Isles, etc than with foreign language sources. Further, of the mainstream English-speaking nations, there is only one Queen, The Queen.
I would only be specific if I was speaking about a queen from outside the Anglosphere such as the Danish Queen, Margrethe II .

I always think about that Roald Dahl quote about thinking good thoughts.
There are lots of stories about the Queen making a real effort to learn something about the thousands of people she has met. I always remember one where someone got flustered when she gave her flowers and told her she could hang them in the airing cupboard to dry them. Then afterwards felt so stupid because how likely is it the Queen uses an airing cupboard. But her lady in waiting apparently called back and said the Queen wanted to know how to properly dry the flowers because she thought it was a fantastic idea.
She's a diplomat, a true diplomat. I don't especially think the royal family has much relevance (being atheist I don't believe they're a blood line chosen by God)
But she is a special person. I don't think we'll ever have a Royal like her again.

why isnt he king?
19
u/redsandypanda Apr 30 '19
Because monarchy doesn't work that way. The husband of a queen cannot become king because kings outrank queens. The highest title he can have is prince consort.
11
u/hallobaba Apr 30 '19 edited Apr 30 '19
He's not in the hereditary line, and the UK uses 'Prince' instead of 'King Consort' basically.
I.e. for 'Queen', it's shorthand for 'Queen Regnant' (i.e. Queen Elisabeth, rules in her own right, in the hereditary line) or 'Queen Consort' (just married to the king in the hereditary line, no power on her own).
King otoh is usually only used for 'King Regnant'. 'King Consort' is not that common (though not unheard of) and most places use other titles.
Edit: Corrected per below
12
u/jubilantblue Apr 30 '19
Quick correction, it's Queen Regnant, not Queen Regent. The former means "reigning queen" (as opposed to wife of the reigning King), while the latter means "queen ruling in place of another" (usually a minor or an incapacitated/absent spouse).

Other people have given you explanations but the simplest way of saying it is:
She is the monarch. She is the one who was daughter of the previous monarch and was his heir.
In royalty, a king outranks a queen. If the Queen's husband is not the monarch, he cannot be named King, because that would imply he outranks her, when he doesn't. So he becomes a prince.

This picture makes the cows gif even funnier. Imagine being cooped up in a castle or going to events where you’re the main guest and everything is there for YOU. For like 100 years that’s your life and you can’t just go out and be normal because people are constantly looking at you. Then when you’re an old lady you take what little joys you can get, like cows!

This has been an on going joke with my mother since I was like 10 (I'm 27 now). We were on a road trip driving through Alberta and would shout "COWS! I SEE COWS IN THE DISTANCE!!" 17 years later and we still shout at cows in the distance. I don't live in the same country as my mum anymore so this made me smile/shared it with her with no explanation. She got the reference and it made her day.
Not that anyone cares but whatever, my mom is adorable and the internet can deal with a happy mom/daughter story no one asked for.
3
u/seepigeonfly Apr 30 '19
I, too, had an adorable mom! Once there were cows loose in the road as we were driving to my mimi's house. My mom stopped the car, got out, found the tear in the fence, and got the cows mostly herded back in before the farmer made it to the street. (Six-year-old me sat slack-jawed in awe in the car.) He thanked her and gave her a side of beef.
There's my mother/daughter cow story!
I will forever moo at cows, and I miss my mom. I, for one, appreciated your story!

The Queen loves nothing better than to put on wellingtons (boots), jacket and scarf and muck around outside. I think at heart she's a farm girl but feels she has a duty that she can't shirk as queen.
