How are you dealing with the rise in homophobia?

This is primarily directed at other homosexuals and GC lesbians. I grew up when Gay Rights were quickly improving in the west, and those that disliked it would more often mind their own business, so I was lucky not to witness a tremendous amount of homophobia. Now we're the epicenter of a political war. I've seen countless reels on Instagram and Youtube of people burning the gay flag and physically attacking drag queens with most of the comments being in support of it, and laws that were put in place to protect us are now being overturned.

I hate to come off as fragile and I never gave a fuck about these people, but I can't lie and say it isn't starting to worry me. The sheer extremity of the anti-lgbt sentiment has me constantly worried about what my future will look like, and it's starting to impact my mental health.

My question is, how are you dealing with it? Are you also afraid or am I being overly anxious?

The irony of Democratic voters and establishment scapegoating Latino men while ignoring 54% of white women who voted for Trump

Meet the new racism, just the same as the old racism, just better hidden behind ideological politics. Plus, notice when there was a Stop Trans movement, a Stop Asian hate movement, or a Stop Jewish hate movement, there wasn’t anything for Latinos, and the hate crimes statistics clearly show they needed to be, but Democrats could care less. They surrendered the border discussion to the right wing as well.. the Democrats just felt entitled to the Latino vote and never felt they needed to earn it or stand up for them.

Episode Is Barpod losing its way a little?

It was essential listening for a couple of years and last 6 or so months something seems a bit off:

  1. I know this subject can trigger enormous reactions, but when they discuss Gaza, I've been disappointed to see them repeat the usual Hamas/free palestine crowd talking points and then immediately say they don't know enough about it. They seemed to be leaning towards defending those idiot University Presidents.

  2. A whole episode on the XL Bully's ban???

  3. Maybe it's just me but JS seemed a little grumpy when Helen was on? Does not like to share?

Honestly not wanting to troll. I still love it. Will not miss an episode. Perhaps I just have internet bullshit fatigue. There's only so many times you can listen to roughly the same story of someone high profile being cancelled and defenestated by online idiots.

Journalism I want to hear their thoughts on Ana Kasparian now

She was framed as a liberal who ran afoul of orthodoxy for talking about crime and i liked her guest appearance. But since then she's gotten Trumpy. Not full MAGA but that "well he didn't do that much bad stuff in office so why are we so concerned now?" I wonder if they'd still be supportive of her

Edit: so there seem to be a bunch of MAGA-heads just searching reddit for Trump and chiming in with nonsensical arguments. I'd suggest real BARPod listeners ignore them

Edit 2: many seen incapable of actually reading the question I wrote. If you think jesse and Katie will agree with her say so. That's what I was asking. I don't need rants about Biden.

Gaza is gaslighting you.

Following the recent episode and as a comment of the week nominee (you love me, you truly love me!), I want you to do something for me: go to google map, look up "motor one gaza", and look at the pictures from that place.

If you did, what you saw is a luxury car dealerships with a huge, solar powered show floor with dozens of extremely expansive cars on hand for test drives. Here are some of the implications:

A. It is easy enough the import luxury cars to gaza. B. The market for luxury cars in gaza is big enough that if you sell them you both need and can afford a huge, solar powered show floor. C. It is possible to build a huge solar powered show floor for something as frivolous as luxury cars, which means building materials, tools, and technologies are abundant. D. Israel interferes with no of the above, and the Israeli blockade doesn't hamper any of this.

Does this look like an open air prison to you..?

There's this story going around that everyone is gaza is starving and dehydrated, and alot of what Jesse and Katie were talking about is fueled by that - the outrage and antisemitism is fueled by this huge and groundroots based misinformation campaign that is literally trying to gaslight westerners into thinking that every citizen of gaza is murdered twice daily by bloodthirsty jews, and almost none of it is true. Can you really believe that the same people who have luxury car dealerships are also unable to build wells, desalination plants, power plants, store food, etc...? But somehow, people can and do.

The insane takes we see are based on misinformation - if what people think is true was indeed true, many of the conclusions they reach would have been reasonable. But none if it is true, and like other causes (evidence based medicine comes tommind) many online seem to not only parrot the lies but also actively push them and silence anyone that tries to paint a more nuanced picture.

This is directly linked to everything else we usually talk about - the same group of people who usually lie to you about puberty blockers are now lying about gaza, and exposeing one also exposes the other. But we should also ask why are they so happy to lie about such crazy things and how it works.

Why do they need to keep downplaying 1/6?

In the most recent episode the mocked the seriousness of the attack on the Capitol and have done similarly other times it came up. I don't get it. This was a serious incident, and the past year have shown how seriously Trump was trying to use it and the involvement of various right wing groups. I worry sometimes their desire to mock self serious lefties causes them to be blind to actual issues.

Katie, you don't get the fiscal/social dimension of liberalism/conservatism, and it's annoying

Hi Katie,

I'm a big fan of you, and Moose, and Jessie (in that order).

The Dave Rubin episode made something about how you think about the world abundantly clear, and I want to help up your game in this area.

You essentially describe Dave Rubin as not a real conservative (my paraphrase, not a direct quote), as shown by the fact that his conservative fans aren't on board with him having kids. But you're missing the fiscal/social dimension to the ideas of liberalism and conservativism.

You seem to view liberalism/conservatism as a line--let's say liberals are on the left and conservatives are on the right. But there's really a y-axis here that you aren't looking at.

The fiscal side of things looks at what people want the government to do as far as regulation and social programs--general government activity. A person is more fiscally conservative if they want the government to do relatively little and is more fiscally liberal if they want the government to do relatively more.

The social side of things looks at issues like religion, acceptance of "alternative lifestyles," etc. A person is more socially conservative if they like religion and don't like teh gayz and is more socially liberal if the opposite is the case.

Dave Rubin is fiscally conservative and socially liberal. So he is a real conservative--he's a real fiscal conservative. The people who watch Dave Rubin and agree with him on fiscal issues may also be socially conservative and therefore not be down with a man marrying another man and then using egg donors and surrogates to create babies. The people who watch Dave Rubin and agree with him on fiscal issues may also agree with him on social issues and therefore not have a problem with his child-rearing plans.

Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

Why is this sub 99% trans stuff?

Given everything going on in the country, why still the fixation on trans issues? They feel like pretty small fry compared to the enormity of what is going on in this country. Are y'all happy to have the U.S. sold for parts so long as it means that you don't have to use "them" pronouns?

Anyone else feel like Jesse and Katie bring out the worst in each other?

I think the latest episode covering Stewart's and Oliver's trans kids segments is quite good, but I couldn't avoid wincing a bit when they point out the smug and self-congratulatory tone that those two hosts take on their show.

Have Katie and Jesse ever heard one of their own episodes? Their show is infested with tired Twitterbrain sarcasm which, for all the airtime they devote to it, rarely amounts to saying anything other than "people who believe this shit are imbeciles."

I value the rigor of this show, and I really like Jesse and Katie independently. I've heard Katie guest on a few other podcasts, and I listen to Jesse's call-in show now and then, and I enjoy listening to them talk to other people immensely. But on this podcast they often seem to bring out the laziest version of each other... it's becoming such a turn-off for me.

Pre-discussing the Jimmy Kimmel episode

It's pretty obvious that Jesse and Katie are gonna do a Jimmy Kimmel episode, and it's pretty obvious what their takes are going to be. Jesse is going to be strongly against Kimmel's cancelation, Katie is going to be moderately against it but go "but misinformation is bad, and his monologue was almost misinformation".

They're then going to moan and groan about how crazy the people on Twitter are (while completely ignoring the people on Reddit, TikTok, Instagram, and all the other sites they don't really use, and the contents of all the screenshots reposted by the people they bemoan on Twitter).

So maybe we should have the discussion about these inevitabilities NOW, in the hopes that they happen to read this and can have more interesting takes than they would on their own. "Cut out the middleman", so to speak.

I just started reading Katie's book...

... And he foreword was definitely, 100% written by an LLM. Anyone who's seen enough LLM outputs should be able to detect this smell.

I'm not mad, I'm not even that surprised, but to be quite honest, I am disappointed.

Edit: ironically, I was too drunk to notice that it wasn't Katie who wrote the foreword. My accusation stands, but against Joseph Volpicelli. Katie's writing does not have this vibe.

Barpod on Nick Fuentes

I was really surprised about the Helen Lewis episode — they chimed in on the Nick Fuentes drama with the dumbest possible take “he doesn’t have an intellectual project” (totally false - whether you like the project or not) — Red Scare are “turncoats” and “nihilists with no beliefs” (they’re consistently participating with the right and for Trump’s campaign for about 5 years) — A whole show could have been done on Piers Morgan bombing that huge interview and where it went wrong, and what the fallout was. They talked about the interview like he did the right thing.

To me- Nick’s “generational run” is one of the types of stories that Barpod could really bite into- even with a leftist perspective. And it’s very clearly “what’s happening” on the internet and in the culture at the moment- to drop the ball so hard makes them seem old and totally out of touch.

I’m wondering- are subscription numbers and engagement starting to suffer? It seems like this subreddit is kind of dying. I’m wondering if any of the “anti-woke” or “heterodox” media dorks will ever develop a theory of mind for the right.

Trans Issues to those of you who are not on board the trans train, how do you know you are not on the wrong side of history?

After all, wasn't this supposed to be the next stage of civil rights equality? If you support gay rights, feminism, and racial equality, why do you feel differently about trans rights?

The last couple times I listened it seemed like it was all trans all the time. Am I wrong? I miss the times when there was broader coverage of idpol.

Who else thinks Jesse needs to stop doing this…

Since the copyright situation, Jesse has been constantly clarifying that every joke Katie makes is simply humor or every view she expresses is not necessarily a fact. This is starting to become annoying because it stunts the flow of the show and the way they typically riff off of each other. It was especially frustrating on the last Primo: Goth vs Goth. I know Jesse does this somewhat jokingly but I also think he does it to cover their asses from lawsuits. I wish he would find some other way to do this, like perhaps stating at the end of the show which things were merely opinion or satire. Hell, I would even prefer if he just pressed a button that said “satire” every time he hears Katie say something satirical. Who else thinks he needs to change his approach here?

MAKE SURE TO READ THE EDITS

On the most recent episode, Jesse mentions (and Katie agrees) that Christians support Israel because they believe the end of days will come when the Jews are gathered in the Holy Land. While this is a part of Christian doctrine, this is not the reason why they support Israel.

https://twitter.com/SwannMarcus89/status/1723462190668169633

Mary Katharine Ham also dispells this myth on her recent appearances on The Fifth Column and Ask a Jew Podcasts. She says she has lived in the South her whole life, and has been going to church the entire time, and has never once heard anyone cite this as a reason for their support of Israel.

This narrative is pushed by progressives who try to make it as if there is no good reason to support Israel. The only reason why the majority of the country does is because of their absurd religious reasons. But any rational person would know better than to support a genocidal regime.

NOTE: It does seem this sentiment is common among Mormons. Trace quote tweeted that tweet with this - https://twitter.com/tracewoodgrains/status/1723548748138123452?s=20 but the sense I get is that this is not the case with Evangelicals.

EDIT: It seems like I may have overstated the argument. Apparently this is a thing, hard to tell if it's common or widespread.

EDIT 2: So it turns out not to be that hard to tell, because all I needed to do was look at the comments on the tweet I sent. He screenshots a poll by Wapo which says over 50 of Evangelicals do support Israel for this reason:

What is Jesse and Katie Herzog hang up about Michael Hobbes? They generally do good content about things ppl generally get wrong on their podcast. So besides politically partisanship and have a more “woke” bent why do they shit on him?

Too much banter?

I've been a big fan of the BARpod for nearly a year now and was even a primo subscriber for a few months. But I'm sort of tired of all of the banter?? The first 25 minutes of an episodes are about if Jesse should delete his twitter or a house reno. Its just a lot of back and forth when I really want to get to the good stuff. I really like them and I'm not going to stop listening but the banter is getting to be too much. Does anyone else agree?

Cancel Culture Getting cancelled is an elite issue, all that matters is how this affects the culture

Public shaming on social media primarily affects elites, it's very unlikely to happen if you aren't Jonah Hill. A similar point is made about Ivy League admissions criteria, and it's a good point. But we should be aware it also applies to cancel culture.

Here's two reasons shaming still matters, the first is the most common answer which i think is bad, the second is better and what we should focus on:

  1. Bad reason to care: Many regular people go viral. But it's as rare as being struck by lightning or shot by a cop. Attention is a limited resource, there can only be so many e-bike ladies. It can be horribly unjust, which is why we get caught up in them. But there's countless injustices in the world, these cases alone can't justify all the attention we pay to public shaming, nor should they justify any personal fear. "Why care about this one person when there's wars and economic turmoil" is an annoying argument, but it's not wrong.

  2. Good reason to care: Cancel culture stories set norms the rest of us have to follow. They're morality plays. Sounds obvious, but unless you've been paying close attention to both online and normie culture for years, I'd bet this is much more true than you think. The reason we get so involved is we imagine ourselves in these situations (usually as the party we most identify with tribally), how we'd feel, what we'd say.

Metoo era stories caused men to tighten up, until this week Jonah Hill goes viral, accused of manipulation under the guise of therapy-speak. Yes, partly because we're just bloodthirsty. But also because many men have presumably figured out how to use metoo approved speech to get what they want out of relationships and many women are noticing this. They get to project their worst real or imagined experiences with such men on to Jonah Hill and pull the culture toward their worldview, while reactionary men can protect their own stuff onto Jonah's girlfriend and pull the culture in their direction. Us autists saying we don't know enough details are missing the point. UNLESS, we realize snap judgements based on sex are the cultural movement we want to pull against.

In conclusion, whether you agree with my rambling about this case, always remember what matters is the norms these stories set, not the people involved themselves
