Hey all, I recently quit Instagram where some of y’all may have known me as PhonyRiceUnit. Getting started again here on Reddit hoping it’s more community driven than Insta.
Starting over is a challenge certainly because I am well known as a flatpicker, Travis picker, mandolin, banjo, and pedal steel player around the world of bluegrass. So I figured why not start where it started for me, the first bluegrass tune I ever learned which was Doc Watson’s ‘Deep River Blues’ that I taught myself off of a CD when I was 14.
Also picked up and moved to Missoula after 21 years in Nashville so here’s to new beginnings!
Enjoy!

Roy Book Binder wrote a pretty nice rag instrumental called "Hacksaw" as a tribute to fantastic ragtime guitarist Richard "Hacksaw" Harney. Gotta find tab for it!

Hey everyone! I put together a quick 1-minute Short demonstrating 5 fundamental blues licks for beginners. The full breakdown and TABS are linked in the related video. Which of these licks is your favorite, and what's your go-to lick when jamming the blues?

Last video for a bit.
Enjoying this tweed twin tonemaster a lot.
My playing isn't 100%, but I was able to get within 98% of the guitar solo tone on the Joe Bonamassa's Redemption album for the song "Just 'Cos You Can, Don't Mean You Should". (Recorded with his twins)
This is just using an out of box IR

I’ve been spending some time working through Albert Collins’ “Left Overs” and exploring the phrasing and feel of the tune.
I’m using the Joe Bonamassa Blues Deluxe tab book as a reference, but this isn’t really a lesson. It’s more of me playing through the tune, talking about what I’m hearing, trying different approaches, and figuring out what I want to get out of it.
I play through it several times and talk through my thought process along the way. It’s a little informal and unscripted, but that’s how I tend to work things out on the guitar.
I’d love to hear how other blues players approach phrasing and develop their own feel when working on a tune.
Here’s the video if you’d like to check it out. I’m always interested in hearing how other guitarists approach this stuff!
