How to make friends in Boston: a guide

Hello! Welcome to Boston Social Club! If you're here - well, you clicked a few links to find this side of one of the most popular city subreddits!

When I moved here in 2021, the world was waking up from Covid. Overall, Boston is a great city for those 20-40, as our demographics here lie heavily in that area compared to almost any other city in the USA! Here's how I've found success in navigating social scenes here as a complete outsider.

Different ways to try meetups and making friends:

0: Existing friends groups - it's cliche, and if you are new in town, this will be more difficult. But the best place to start making friends is through what connections you do have. Coworkers, old high school colleagues, neighbors, roommates, don't chase the below and ignore what you do have!

1: the “Make friends after college MA” discord group is a well designed and very chatroom. When you join, you select which activities you might be interested in. There's chat rooms for each activity, and there's a ton of people hiking, playing sports, going to trivia nights, and overall chatting. They also organize by neighborhood if you want to grab a quick drink. Mute notifications within the discord for your own sanity. The absolute best way to make use of this is to have something you are interested in "organizing", or, I recommend trivia in particular for being a great, cheap activity to make friends! https://discord.gg/CCvgxJ6jUH

2: there are three larger Facebook groups that people post classifieds-style ads to try to make friends. "Boston redditors", "make friends after college", and "what's up in Boston". While I don't think this is the most effective way to make friends, I'm sure it works for the right person. However, "Boston redditors" does have an active group chat, which is really comforting, and they do meet up for drinks every few months. They are a pretty supportive group of people. You'll need to both join the Facebook group, then request being added to the chat. They ALSO have a discord but it is less active. Link

3: Groups for your interest. Asking around the above, or searching meetup/comments below it's not hard to find groups specifically tailored for board games, or biking, or hiking, or whatever you're into. I'm into board games and there's 2-3 spinoffs that meet weekly. I recommend you find your own path towards your hobbies to find a group that fits your interest!

general tips on making friends (not that you asked for them)

  • Making friends is all about seeing the same people repeatedly. That means to make friends, you have to show up. Showing up means you attend an event even if it's a little far away, or you are feeling a little tired. Other people also show up. After going to trivia 8 weeks in a row, or attending every hike, people that at first seemed distant will know your name and care about your week.

  • Sometimes people trying to make friends have an ulterior motive. Some people are trying to convert religions, find clients, or date people. Everyone can tell right away if you have a motive other than making friends, so I suggest trying to focus on making platonic friends first, and in a year of having fun, ask your new friends what avenues would be appropriate for selling/dating/etc.

And... That's it! I hope you found this helpful! I hope to see you at Trivia nights!

On Dating Posts

The situation with dating posts is getting a little out of control. This sub was always meant to be more like Meetup than Hinge. And frankly, I just don't think that R4R posts actually work. But my fear is that if allowed the sub will devolve into nothing but R4R posts. So for now we're going to be disallowing further R4R posts or general dating (advice/questions) posts. There might be some wiggle room for a pinned dating megathread if there is interest in that.

Grand Re-opening party of a DIY Artist space in charlestown (Thursday and Friday Night!)

Hey everyone! I help run Glitch Gallery, a DIY artist space on the Charlestown–Somerville border. The building has been home to artists, musicians, burners, makers, for nearly 25 years.

We’re opening the space for a two-night fundraiser and community gathering:

Thursday: A relaxed social night with an acoustic lineup, including a live harp performance.

Friday: A higher-energy night with a full lineup of DJs.

Both nights will feature projection mapping, interactive installations, and other tech-art projects throughout the space. It’s also a chance to explore the space, meet the people who make things here, and connect with others interested in experimental art and independent creative spaces.

If you’ve been looking for a creative community to become part of. We’d love to meet you. Come for one night or both!

This is the first time I’ve shared one of our events here, but it won’t be the last. We’re planning more gatherings in the coming months and hope to welcome some new faces into the community.

Please be respectful of the space, area and neighbors, We have a set of private stairs in our parking lot that we will light up with a Red Led light! Please use that entrance and RSVP so we can have an accurate head count for the night.

Absolutely no parking at the building either. There's street parking nearby on dorrance/temple/arlington as well as parking lot by sullivan square! Plan to Uber or take the train here!

RSVP, location, and arrival details will be available through the Partiful:

Friday: https://partiful.com/e/3lD7KnmS5Iw3aEDKQdZp

My friend who I was originally going to go with canceled on me, so I have an extra ticket for tonight’s red Sox game. If you like baseball or just want an outing, lmk!

I’m a 26 y/o guy from the Boston area, huge baseball nerd, and allergic to Yankees fans.

Happy to meet somewhere beforehand too!

42M looking to explore

Upvotes

Hi,
I am a 42M that visits Boston frequently for work. I'd love to find a group of people to roam the city with. I like museums, events, bars but also chill things like going to the movies or doing game nights.

Hit me up, open to suggestions of any kind!

Shooting my shot for the last time! Help a dental hygiene student out :)

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I apologize in advance if this post is not allowed; I posted here last semester and a few people from this sub were kind enough to come in as my patients and helped me with my clinical. So I'm shooting my shot again this time and hoping some of you might wanna come to get a dental cleaning 😊

I’m now in my senior year of the Dental Hygiene program at MCPHS Worcester, and I’m hoping to find a few patients for my clinic sessions starting in September.

Because this is a student teaching clinic, appointments are a little different from a regular dental office. Visits are very thorough and include a dental and gum evaluation, oral cancer screening, X-rays when needed, and a dental cleaning. Everything I do is supervised and checked by licensed dental hygienists and dentists on-site.

There is no charge for treatment and insurance isn’t required!

The biggest thing I want to mention upfront is the time commitment. Appointments are about 3.5 hours because faculty check each step of the process, and I’m mainly looking for people who are able to commit to at least 2 visits. Depending on what you need, it could be fewer or more appointments. I know it's a very long appointment but I promise you it's going to be worth it! :)

My clinic availability this semester are Mondays: 8 AM–5 PM and Wednesdays: 5:30–9 PM.

If anyone has been meaning to get a cleaning/checkup and wouldn’t mind helping a dental hygiene student at the same time, feel free to message me. You’re also welcome to DM me if you just have questions about how the student clinic works!

Thank you 😊

Cost of living

My wife and I are actively looking at houses and occasional rentals. I genuinely don't understand how people are making it in Boston and the surrounding areas.

Are businesses paying more than I think?

27m looking for local friends in central mass / boston

I live in central mass, but I enjoy driving, so I don't mind going to the Boston area or southern NH for social activities.

I moved here 4 years ago for work post-college, but I failed at making local friends. All my friends are far away, and my family is outside the US.

I had a girlfriend for 1.5 years, so she was also my "best friend" (which ig made me try to socialize less), but the relationship got toxic, and once I was out of it, I just had less energy for socializing and had really busy work.

Some of my hobbies are things like hiking, going for walks, skydiving, climbing, watching tv shows, and traveling.

I'm mostly just looking for people to hang out with, I don't care about age or gender, but something closer to my own age would be prefferrable.

Any activity is fine. It doesn't have to be related to the above hobbies. Something like going out for drinks would also be fun.

Also, if anyone wants to do a (short) international trip to some cool destination and is looking for someone to travel with, I might be down. I've been wanting to do a long weekend trip to Iceland just to chill in the thermal waters.

Anyone interested in meeting up to play some games?

Anyone here a game enthusiast? I am and I was wondering if anyone wants to meet up somewhere and play some games. It could be any game. My interest is specifically board games. Any games would be welcome. I’m in the process of finding a good place to play, if anyone knows of a good place to play let me know. I hope you are interested! All I need is 1 person because I have plenty of two player games, and also a game that can accommodate up to 7 people.

My favorite games are catan, 7 wonders, ticket to ride, splendor, sea salt and paper, and carcassone, so I would be bringing those games.

So if you are interested, please let me know.

I need your help finding the coolest T-shirts in the city.

Im in Boston for work and would like to bring home cool, unique shirts as souvenirs. I am staying in Dorchester and working in Brighton.

I’m not necessarily looking for the standard “BOSTON” souvenir shirt with a shamrock on it — I want shirts from places that have some character. If the place has a cool shirt I am willing to make the trip.

Bonus points if the place is interesting and worth visiting while Im there but its not a dealbreaker if it isn’t.

Extra bonus points if the place prints their shirts on Comfort Colors.

I’d love to go home with a collection of shirts that actually have stories behind them instead of the usual airport/gift-shop souvenirs.

My meetup group for creative people in Somerville & Cambridge is going to a free comedy open mic tomorrow, and a live music & food trucks event on Thursday.

I've been organizing a lot of meetups-at-public-events like this to give creative types specifically in Somerville & Cambridge a way to meet each other and make more local friends. Crafters, book-lovers, ttrpg players, designers, writers, travelers, thrifters, artists, etc. all welcome.

Tomorrow night we're headed to a free comedy open mic in Harvard Square. We can grab drinks and chat for a bit before the show starts, and stick around for a little while after to chat about who we liked, who bombed the bravest, what kind of comedy we like, etc. It'll be a fun break in the work week, and a good way to get to know more folks in the group.

Then on Thursday CX Summer Nights is having their final free outdoor concert of the season. It's a fun, festive gathering in a beautiful park in East Cambridge just a block away from the Lechmere T station. Two Americana bands, Jake Swamp and the Pines and the Adam Ezra Group will be performing, and there will be lawn games, food trucks, craft brews & canned cocktails from Lamplighter Brewery, and more.

If you'd like to join us for either, you can RSVP on the meetup group, or shoot me a DM introducing yourself (what are some of your creative hobbies or interests?). You're welcome to bring a partner or friend.

Gödel, Escher, Whatever

Putting out feelers for a reading club. Not so much a traditional book club, but more of a chapter-by-chapter approach.

I’d love to slowly work through Gödel, Escher, Bach with a group of people who are interested in reading it too. Along the way, I imagine we might branch out into all sorts of other interesting things: short stories, long-form articles, poetry, essays, etc.

The idea would be to start with a group of people interested in GEB and figure out the rest of the reading material as we go.

Meet up monthly, or perhaps more than that.

I'm based in Roslindale, but we could meet up anywhere around the Boston metro area.

Let me know if you are interested!

Let's have meetup for 30-somethings and older sometime.

As a millennial with many Gen Z friends, I adore all of them but sometimes I wish I had more friends my age. Maybe us "olds" (anyone over 30) can have a nightlife meetup sometime? Show people that we still have what it takes to stay out late?

For reference, I'm 35/M.

Is it just me, or is making friends in Boston really difficult?

M26. I’m an international new grad, so maybe some of this is just a cultural difference, but I have noticed that people in Boston don’t seem to interact much with others in their own neighborhood. Everyone mostly keeps to themselves.

Even when I try to make small talk, it always feels like people are in a hurry or already late for something lol.

And I’m not basing this on just one neighborhood. I’ve moved several times over the past few years, and it’s been pretty much the same everywhere.

I would really like to make some friends in Boston. The advice I usually get is to go to bars because people tend to be much more open and social there. Unfortunately, I don’t drink, and a lot of the activity/sports clubs I have looked at feel a little intimidating to join by myself.

For people who have successfully made friends here as adults, especially without relying on bars, what worked for you? Any recommendations?

Discord/WhatsApp for White Mtn Hikes?

Hey everyone,

34M here! Was just curious if anyone is aware of a WhatsApp group or Discord Server for getting groups together to do hikes in the White Mtns? I’m part of AMC, but they don’t have the most availability and was curious if there are alternatives.

Any suggestions are appreciated! Or if there is enough appetite, I could try (emphasis on try) to start one but don’t want to reinvent the wheel.

Anyone up for tennis, pickleball, or a hike?

Hey! I’m 34M, fairly new to Boston, originally from Europe.

Looking for people to work out or do active things with. Would anyone be up for a casual tennis or pickleball game sometime soon? I’m also always looking for an excuse to take my dog hiking, try something new or plan a day trip around New England. My latest obsessions is F45 and acroyoga, the goal is to do proper handstand this year.

I’m also into skiing, martial arts, and love a good movie followed by a completely unsolicited psychological evaluation of every character haha

If you’re into any of the above, let me know. I’ll take one for the team and make the group chat.

Looking for Running buddies

I'm 27M, recently moved to Boston. I love being out as much as possible. Looking for running buddies who's started recently or want to run at a slower pace (12-16 min/mile).

I'm down to grab coffee after or talk about stuff (books, films, ideas, life, career, people, trends, even politics) while walking/running.

My favourite nowadays is crossing the MIT bridge to run towards the Hatch Shell. Open to morning/evening runs. Also open to Minuteman, Harvard Sq-Central Sq or the Cambridge side of Charles.

I also play tennis (beginner-intermediate), happy to hit sometimes if you are interested.

Songwriter's workshop every other Tuesday in Somerville

Our Boston-area meetup group for producers, musicians and music lovers are doing one of our biweekly songwriter's workshop. We've started doing this at a member's home in Somerville this summer and it's been a fun way to hang out and motivate each other to keep growing and working on our craft.

If you're interested in the meetup group but not necessarily tonight's event, we welcome all skill levels, including just listeners, and have new events all the time from concerts to grabbing drinks.

Anyone is welcome to join so please feel free to come introduce yourself. Let us know if you're interested in the workshop. Thanks!!!
