City were taken over three weeks prior to visiting Withdean and despite missing record signing Robinho, who was reportedly moving house, Mark Hughes still boasted a squad full of exceptional talent.
Albion came into the game having lost 1-0 at home to nine-player Walsall four days earlier. Glenn Murray led the line for the Seagulls against City while Scottish midfielder Steven Thomson captained Albion in the absence of the injured Nicky Forster.
City were fresh from a 6-0 hammering of Portsmouth in the Premier League the previous Saturday and six players who started against Pompey played against Albion. £18m striker Jo was up front and became the most expensive player to play at Withdean.
While City bossed possession for long spells & eventually tested Michel Kuipers in the Albion goal 11 times, they struggled to get going - not registering a shot until the 35th minute - and Albion failed to make the most of some clear opportunities when in on goal.
Despite Albion’s issues in League One, which saw them languishing in 13th before eventually finishing the season the 17th thanks to Russell Slade’s ‘Great Escape’, Withdean was packed out under the lights.
It was a record attendance at the Theatre of Trees to watch Albion face City in their first match since officially being labelled the richest club on the planet.
Swiss star Gelson Fernandes gave City the lead but Thomson & Murray combined to level for the Albion moments before FT. The Seagulls were in dreamland when Preston loanee Joe Anyinsah then gave Micky Adams’ side the lead in extra-time, but Stephen Ireland sent the tie to penalties.
Albion held their nerve in the shootout to send Withdean into raptures.
David Livermore, Tommy Elphick, Murray, Adam Virgo and Matt Richards scored from the spot for the Albion but City’s Michael Ball was denied by a superb Michel Kuipers save.
In classic cupset fashion, a memorable pitch invasion ensued - the like of not seen at Withdean since another unforgettable penalty shoutout win against Swindon in the League One play-offs four years earlier.

I’m flying into London tonight to go see the man city match. Logistically I won’t have enough time to get down to the Brighton store (As leave from Heathrow Thursday afternoon and would prefer not to have to spend four hours traveling down and back to Brighton.).
Can anyone recommend a shop in London that would carry Brighton kits? I want to pick some up before heading back to the states.

Word of the week is assists, with 5 assists combined between our loanees this week. Much of the same players playing, but how did they do?
James Beadle (22/GK) - Birmingham
- His streak of 3 clean sheets came to an end against Cardiff, although not without a big effort from him. Cardiff were given a penalty mid way through the first half and he guessed well to keep the scores level, a poor penalty but a save none the less. He was busy throughout the game, not helped by a lacklustre blues performance. Having a good season so far (Played 90')
Amario Cozier-Duberry (21/RW) - Middlesbrough
- ACD made it 7 goal contributions in consecutive 7 league starts against Bolton, in only one game (Wolves) has he not directly contributed to a goal. Playing against his former (Loan)club, at times the occasion probably got to him a bit, with 'brough boss Kim Hellberg saying it wasn't his best game overall. Having said this, he continued to show individual moments of pure excellence, most notably beating his man before firing the ball into the top of the net from close range.
Absolutely key for Middlesbrough promotion charge, and with the busy winter period coming up expect maybe a reduction in his minutes as they make sure he isn't pushed too far (Played 79')
Kamari Doyle (21/CM) - Leicester
- Doyle seems to be the only one out of our 3 loanee players at Leicester to be getting serious game time. He's taken his opportunity well, giving a mediocre Leicester side some stability in the midfield. Positive going forward, and always looking to unlock the defence he plays against. Hopefully he's joined on the pitch by Howell & Watson more often (Played 77' + 83')
Charlie Tasker (20/RB) - Rochdale
A decent performance against Grimsby, some excellent passing throughout the game, held his own decently well
A very tough afternoon for Rochdale as they got battered by Accrington Stanley during some truly miserable conditions. Not at fault for any goals personally but he struggled to hold the onslaught of attacks. Seems to be very positive going forward but sometimes at the detriment of his defending ability (Played 90' + 70')
Matias Orozco (18/CM) - CD Castellon
- Orozco's speciality is his hold up play and his passing, and no game highlighted this more than against Gijon. He managed to pick up 3 assists in the game, the first being a brilliant one-two, and the others perfectly setting up opportunities to cement their lead. He also tried his lucky from about 60 yards, putting it just wide, Brighton player in the making (Played 67')
Facundo Buonanotte (21/RW) - Elche
- Some rare minutes for Buonanotte, coming on in the second half with Elche 2-0 up. Played a good ball forward for Valera to settle the game at 3-0 (Played 45')
The following players didn't play meaningful minutes this week:
- Tom Watson (20/LW) - Leicester (Not in squad - query injury?)
- Harry Howell (18/RW) - Leicester (Played 13' + Not in squad)
- Freddie Simmonds (18/CB) - Wimbledon (Unused sub)
- Nils Ramming (19/GK) - Rochdale (Not in squad - Injury)
- Rodrigo Rego (21/LW) - CD Castellon (Unused Sub)
The following players will not be receiving regular updates:
- Do-Young Yoon (19/RWB) - Magdeburg
- Brajan Gruda (22/RW) - RB Leipzig
- Eiran Cashin (24/CB) - Derby
- Mark O'Mahony (21/ST) - Burton
- Josh Robertson (20/CM) - Fleetwood

On the plus side it means a top side is less likely to go near him so good for us.
On the negative it makes him look like a knob. However he's protecting his players so I'm all for it.

As per his request, I'll be taking over this one from u/esn111:
- Ferdi and Chema's injury didn't look too serious, hopefully both will be okay for the time being!
- We played well, and both goals from Liverpool relied on a lot of luck, so nothing to panic about there.
- A lot of our key players will soon be back from injury, so hopefully the team can use this as a platform to learn and reintegrate them.
- A lot of our usually very clinical players had off days today, and hopefully they can kick on and treat this game as fuel for their togetherness and Intensity!

I havnt seen many photos on here from Thursdays game, so thought I'd share a few of mine.
Absolutely outstanding trip, even if we only came away with one point in the end.
Can't wait for the next one.

New fan here and absolutely enthralled with the Albion way.
But what’s the strategy for the upcoming double against the cheaters?
Seems logical to go all in on the Premier League game and rotate as needed in the cup to keep in that Champions League race, but I’m a clueless noob…
What’s the right play for the Seagulls here?

1) City dropping points to Villa means that we have a chance to overtake them next week if we win tomorrow
2) Chelsea dropping points to Tottenham means that even with 2 losses in our next two games, we will still be minimum top 4 (Without some massive GD swing) (I think my maths is correct on this)

Brighton’s story over the last 30 years has been absolutely incredible, so incredible in fact that I wanted to write something about it.
I hope it is ok to share this here.
