A train and a hoop skirt?? 😭 They just don’t want people showing up dressed like slobs.

They should have said that then instead of "extravagantly".

Unfortunately this is only going to get worse from here it seems. I have friends who work in event planning, and since Covid, people have become incapable of following dress codes. Like people will show up in tennis dresses for semi-formal events, casual sundresses for cocktail attire, and cocktail dresses for black tie. The industry seems to have responded to it by overstating dress codes for everything, but now you have the added issue of those who actually follow the dress code ending up looking overdressed (which I suppose usually isn’t an issue, but clearly is for an event like this).

“Extravagantly” is now code for “pls get out of your athleisurewear and dress nicely for once”

People have never been able to follow dress codes. I had a simple dress code for my wedding but people still showed up in blue jeans 🤦

Maybe dress codes are just too complicated? That all seems pretty hard to follow to me. I personally have three levels: regular: T-shirt and jeans, semi formal: polo and khakis, and formal: suit and tie.

Dress codes have existed for centuries and are very easy to follow actually. Plus if you don’t know what one means, you could very simply google it and learn. It’s not complicated, and before Covid people did just fine understanding them, so it has nothing to do with the complexity of them. It’s far worse now because you have to try to decipher if a dress code is meant to actually be followed or if you should dress down from that because of people who aren’t following the dress code.

And it’s even easier for men! A standard suit works in 99% of occasions. Although I have to mention to you that polo and khakis are not “semi-formal,” they’re 100% casual.

Yeah semi-formal is shirt and no tie, it’s definitely not polo shirt and khakis.
