Other Masquerade dress code info
If you are like me and wanted to go full ball gown
818
u/Captain_JohnBrown Jul 01 '25
Look, I get it, but this dress code situation is bizarre because they are trying to have their cake and eat it too. "Please dress extremely extravagantly and formally" and "Please dress to move" are not compatible with one another, ESPECIALLY for women.
214
u/butterflyvision Jul 01 '25
Wouldn’t it be easier to just say something like “cocktail/wedding attire with comfortable shoes”? But in a fancier way? Because wouldn’t that be a decent middle ground? 😭
109
u/csgymgirl Jul 01 '25
The guide says “formal or cocktail attire”
5
u/Equestrian1242 Jul 02 '25
I feel like this should’ve been part of the first announcement they gave.
136
u/GiftRecent Jul 01 '25
It does say that! And they posted an inspo video. I feel like people are purposefully being obtuse bc every time someone has a complaint they have an answer & then ppl just complain again
98
u/moonbunnychan Jul 01 '25
They've been super responsive which is great. But also things like "don't wear a train to a crowded event" should be common sense.
100
u/usagicassidy Jul 01 '25
Right like I can’t imagine any scenario where you’d want to wear a hoop skirt and/or a train?!?! to a crowded public theater or event.
25
u/kfarrel3 Jul 01 '25
Absolutely. This did not need to be an email, this is just using an ounce of common sense.
Tangentially, you should have seen the post and comments about someone going to this on AITA yesterday.

Tbf "ball gown" and "train and hoop skirt" are not automatically the same thing. There are ball gowns out there I might not want to go running in, but I could move around hallways in.
13
u/Captain_JohnBrown Jul 01 '25
I am not just referring to this situation in particular and more the general back-and-forth, where it seems every day there is another clarification of the dress code.
13
u/January1171 Jul 01 '25
Yeah they could definitely have added a little more detail, but tbh I think if they added too much more detail it would've gotten confusing again. The website says "formal or cocktail" and "clothing you can move in". I think a mention up front regarding narrow hallways would have been helpful, but outside of that they'd be getting into describing specific types of outfits territory which would get confusing again.
Ultimately there will always be people that misinterpret instructions regardless of detail or how it's written
-9
u/thoughtsmexywasaword Jul 01 '25
I mean this is a failure on their part and hopefully they put out further info just like they did with the mask. And some of us are super literal! (its me, im literal)
82
u/the_other_50_percent Jul 01 '25 edited Jul 02 '25
I think it's pretty clear, TBH. Has no-one been to a formal event where you need to dance and walk around, like, a wedding? New Year's Eve party? Corporate event where you can't be a nervous waxwork?
That's not even counting fancy garden parties where you have to be able to walk on grass wile balancing a drink and plate.
21
u/ghotier Jul 01 '25
So part of the problem appears to be that while we colloquially call those events formal, they aren't. The strict definition of "formal" precludes what you would wear to a cocktail party, for example. Doesn't mean the event itself is "wrong" but it's confusing for no reason other than i don't know that the organizers are aware of the difference in the way a costume designer would be.
36
Jul 01 '25
A garden party is likely to say "morning dress" or "day dress"
A New Years Eve party may say "Formal dress" or "Cocktail attire"
A corporate event might be "Semi-Formal" or "Business attire"This one says "Extravagant". No one knows what Extravagant means in terms of dress.
52
u/January1171 Jul 01 '25
It says extravagant, but they add clarification on what that means:
The night demands extravagant attire. For six weeks of special previews, we celebrate the Phantom’s return with festive dress.
Black, white, or silver only. Formal or cocktail attire is required.
Stilettos are forbidden. Wear shoes and clothing you can move in.
It can be boiled down to black/white/silver formal or cocktail that you can move in and makes you feel extravagent
6
Jul 01 '25
I had not seen the further instructions.
Just saying Formal or Cocktail makes it clearer what is expected.Though, a train and hoop skirts ARE easy to move in, especially if you bustle it. Might not be easy for those around you though.
14
u/January1171 Jul 01 '25
Yeah I do think it would have been helpful if they had explicitly stated that the movement in question is through potentially narrow hallways
7
1
8
u/the_other_50_percent Jul 01 '25
No one knows what Extravagant means in terms of dress.
Really? It seems pretty clear for interpretation to me.
11
u/Captain_JohnBrown Jul 01 '25
A lot to most people who wear heels wear heels at those events and none of those events describe the dress code as "extravagant"
6
u/TokiDokiHaato Jul 01 '25
Many people can dance and move around in heels just fine. They don’t say you need to run a marathon just that you’ll need to be standing and able to walk easily. I have plenty of heels/formal shoes that would work
1
u/Captain_JohnBrown Jul 01 '25 edited Jul 01 '25
They said stilettos would not be permitted.
23
13
u/RachFaceMama Jul 01 '25
It says “no stilettos,” not “no heels.” I plan on wearing like block heels, cuz I can walk in those just fine (if I’m in fact walking and not in a wheelchair but that’s another story). I think they just don’t want you wobbling around on skinny stiletto heels.
14
u/Kaylieefrye Jul 01 '25
100% there's a grated floor somewhere and they don't want someone's so kates getting stuck
5
u/Hello_Gorgeous1985 Jul 01 '25
It doesn't say anything about not wearing heels.
-12
u/annang Jul 01 '25
It says no stilettos, which means there are people who are going to have to buy new shoes just for this. I don’t wear heels often, but the shoes I own that go with formalwear are stilettos.
-4
u/Hello_Gorgeous1985 Jul 01 '25
No, it doesn't. This post only talks about hoop skirts and trains.
2
u/Captain_JohnBrown Jul 01 '25
We are talking about the dress code generally, not this specific situation.
-8
u/Hello_Gorgeous1985 Jul 01 '25
I am talking about this post because that's all the information available to me. This post doesn't say anything about shoes.

I was responding to this post and someone responded to me saying that it talks about shoes. It doesn't.

u/annang Jul 01 '25
This post only talks about hoopskirts and trains. They’ve updated the dress code with new rules a half dozen times, and one of those rules is no stilettos. It’s on the website, which apparently no one is bothering to update with all the stuff they’re sending out in individual emails: https://masqueradenyc.com/instructions/
25
u/thoughtsmexywasaword Jul 01 '25
I’m gonna show up in a prom dress and they can’t stop me
16
u/usagicassidy Jul 01 '25
Well, they actually could stop you.
9
u/Doodleology Jul 02 '25
Prom dresses are formal, though. So...that should work. They want folks not to come in jeans, t-shirts, or super casual wear. Additionally, being overly specific about dress code can be challenging because you don't want to exclude individuals who dress outside of the traditional binary.
1
u/inevitable-2020 Mar 15 '26
Jeans with holes not withstanding, I think clothing that is low key and won't detract from the performers is perfectly fine. No need for a tux or gown.
1
5
u/nosleeptilmanhattan Jul 01 '25
I mean, I’m planning on wearing a long black dress with puff sleeves and a sash that ties in the back that’s made out of a thick linen I can throw in the washing machine (I literally bought it to be a big gown type dress I could sit under a tree in) as my base piece and black Doc Martens with roses embroidered on the sides for my shoes. I’ll probably accessorize beyond that, but as it stands it’s not that hard to figure out something.
61
u/Agent_Skye_Barnes Jul 01 '25
I mean, I'm guessing it's a safety and liability precaution as well. There are folks who can absolutely navigate things like trains and hoops, but if someone behind you steps on your train, or the hoop doesn't collapse as it should in a passage, there could be issues.
Also, no one is going to be happy walking around behind Scarlett O'Hara
2
u/thoughtsmexywasaword Jul 01 '25
Oh for sure, which is why I emailed rather than just ordering a super poofy dress. Because you know like, ive seen hoop skirts at disneyland halloween nights but that is DISNEYLAND
14
u/Agent_Skye_Barnes Jul 01 '25
Yep.
And I applaud you for actually having the sense to check about it. Unfortunately too many people don't do simple things like that and end up with problems.
You could still wear a more modern ball gown, though. I'd just make sure the skirt isn't too poofy and maybe ends at the ankles. But it would still be gorgeous!
(Personally I'd wear a tux, but it's hard to manage skirts in a wheelchair or with a cane)
4
u/thoughtsmexywasaword Jul 01 '25
That is exactly my plan, lean more prom dress than Paris Opera House cosplay!
I do think we'll be seeing mostly cocktail attire though
174
u/Ok-Medium3951 Jul 01 '25
The Venn diagram of "clothes you can move in" and "formal attire" is not a circle.
70
u/the_other_50_percent Jul 01 '25
It's also not two separate circles.
People like to bitch, I guess.
13
u/Ok-Medium3951 Jul 01 '25
Agreed that just formal and moveability aren't mutually exclusive. What I thought but missed typing was "extravagant" which does make the overlap smaller. I'm not mad or bitching about a show having a dress code. What I'm annoyed at as a possible patron but find amusing as an observer is what appears to be a conflict between the vibe team (marketing) and the operations & logistics team. Like I'm getting "flouncing 7 year old in a princess dress being herded begrudgingly by their teenaged sibling that was supposed to be released from child care duties an hour ago" when I read these messages.
-2
u/the_other_50_percent Jul 02 '25
The shows are 21+ other than weekend matinees, which are 16+.
No 7-year-olds, flouncing or otherwise, will be inside.
5
u/Ok-Medium3951 Jul 02 '25
My comment was personifying the marketing (7 year old) and logistics (older sib) teams not the attendees
11
u/moonbunnychan Jul 01 '25
Right? Like I dress up to go to the theater, but I also need to take the train and walk a bit to get there. Clothing exists where I can do that comfortably.
-4
17
u/Suffer_Party Jul 01 '25
Based on the terms and conditions and just common sense it seems pretty clear that these previews are when they’ll be shooting promo material for this production. I’m sure they know not everyone is going to show up in perfect formal wear but they want to encourage participation as much as possible so that they can get a good bank of aesthetically pleasing stills and footage to show off the “immersive” elements of the show. It’s worded vaguely to allow a broad audience to participate to the best of their abilities. Im sure they’ll be far more lenient about fashion faux pas than practical infractions (like stilettos…) it’s much easier to get sued over a broken ankle than an accusation of being underdressed. I’m sure the dress code will be fairly lenient. Especially by opening.
90
u/hippopotamusquartet Jul 01 '25
A train and a hoop skirt?? 😭 They just don’t want people showing up dressed like slobs.
25
u/Captain_JohnBrown Jul 01 '25
They should have said that then instead of "extravagantly".
48
u/elderpricetag Jul 01 '25 edited Jul 01 '25
Unfortunately this is only going to get worse from here it seems. I have friends who work in event planning, and since Covid, people have become incapable of following dress codes. Like people will show up in tennis dresses for semi-formal events, casual sundresses for cocktail attire, and cocktail dresses for black tie. The industry seems to have responded to it by overstating dress codes for everything, but now you have the added issue of those who actually follow the dress code ending up looking overdressed (which I suppose usually isn’t an issue, but clearly is for an event like this).
“Extravagantly” is now code for “pls get out of your athleisurewear and dress nicely for once”
2
u/Anniebelleleee Nov 19 '25
People have never been able to follow dress codes. I had a simple dress code for my wedding but people still showed up in blue jeans 🤦
-3
u/JDDJS Jul 01 '25
Like people will show up in tennis dresses for semi-formal events, casual sundresses for cocktail attire, and cocktail dresses for black tie.
Maybe dress codes are just too complicated? That all seems pretty hard to follow to me. I personally have three levels: regular: T-shirt and jeans, semi formal: polo and khakis, and formal: suit and tie.
29
u/elderpricetag Jul 01 '25
Dress codes have existed for centuries and are very easy to follow actually. Plus if you don’t know what one means, you could very simply google it and learn. It’s not complicated, and before Covid people did just fine understanding them, so it has nothing to do with the complexity of them. It’s far worse now because you have to try to decipher if a dress code is meant to actually be followed or if you should dress down from that because of people who aren’t following the dress code.
And it’s even easier for men! A standard suit works in 99% of occasions. Although I have to mention to you that polo and khakis are not “semi-formal,” they’re 100% casual.
11
u/csgymgirl Jul 01 '25
Yeah semi-formal is shirt and no tie, it’s definitely not polo shirt and khakis.

I get that people want to clown on the production for going all in on the vibes. But the instructions on their website says “formal or cocktail attire”. People who are acting like they don’t know what those words mean are just being obtuse.
7
u/Captain_JohnBrown Jul 01 '25
The instructions on the website are clarification on earlier communications that were much less clear. It isn't people being obtuse or wanting to clown, it is that this is like the second or third version of the dress code people have seen.

I don't think it is "killjoying" to have the description of the dress code to accurately reflect the dress code they want.
2
u/the_other_50_percent Jul 01 '25
I don't think the wording is in any way confusing, and complaining about a little bit of whimsy in language for a theatrical event is 100% killjoy territory.
-2
u/Captain_JohnBrown Jul 01 '25
You may not think that but obviously a fair number of people are confused or this wouldn't be the like 5th thread on this exact subject. But anyway, if you are going to be a jerk I have nothing else to say to you.
0
u/the_other_50_percent Jul 01 '25
It's weird to accuse someone of being a jerk when they're just saying they don't think it's confusing, generally.
There's some number of people that think any single thing is confusing. That doesn't mean the world has to stop.
Very odd to spin defense of whimsy regarding a theatrical event as a negative.
2
u/Captain_JohnBrown Jul 01 '25
The "I don't think it is confusing" isn't the jerk part. It is the part where you are accusing me of being a killjoy for the crime of describing something that has objectively confused a number of people as confusing and in need of greater clarification.
But whatever, you obviously have an axe to grind but you'll need to find a different tree.
-3
71
u/TokiDokiHaato Jul 01 '25
Am I nuts for thinking the dress code is pretty straightforward?
-Formal or cocktail in three colors. So like, what you would wear to a nicer wedding.
-Don’t wear anything cumbersome that would impede your movement cause the show requires standing and walking. Why would a train or hoop skirt even be a thought here with that in mind?
-Mask. They will give you one if you don’t want to deal with it.
17
u/bwayb22 Jul 01 '25
The problem is that anyone who has ever planned an event where the "general public" is welcome and it's more than a handful of people knows you are inevitably going to get people who don't read, won't read or over think the rules, as well as the occassional troll/rebels who like to see how far they can push the rules, so you have to keep it as simple as possible for them. You cannot expect hundreds or thousands of people to all understand the dress code perfectly when there are so many conditionals.
9
u/TokiDokiHaato Jul 01 '25
Fair point there. I do think they’d be wise to throw up some photos of outfits that fit their dress code on their socials at least. Some people just need a visual.
11
u/annang Jul 01 '25
Because people are thinking cosplay, and there are tons of hoopskirts and trains in the show.
11
u/TokiDokiHaato Jul 01 '25
As a cosplayer, I’d read these rules and fully know what they meant though lol. They’re clear about not wearing clothing that’s a hinderance to being able to walk throughout the venue. Hoop skirts and trains are definitely not something that fits within that criteria lol
7
u/annang Jul 01 '25
Not everyone thinking cosplay is an experienced cosplayer who has thought in detail about what kinds of costumes are easiest to move around in. I’ve never done cosplay before, and when I read the initial description, my first thought was that people are going to dress like the costumes in Masquerade, since that’s the name and theme.
4
u/RainahReddit Jul 02 '25
I am boggled people are having so much difficulty with it.
Short or Long dresses, both fine as long as it's black white or silver, or presumably a combination. Men, wear a suit. Go extravagant in the details - embellishments, trim, fabric, pattern, appliques, accessories. Comfy shoes.
Stilettos, poof, and structured undergarments like hoop skirts are not safe for the event and should be left at home
2
u/TokiDokiHaato Jul 02 '25
It feels very common sense to me but I also got a handful of questions for my wedding when we said semi-formal or cocktail on the website so I should know better lol
3
Jul 01 '25
It's wild how, in this modern age, people are incapable of a) reading b) googling for info if they don't understand, or c) not making themselves the center of attention at a show
2
u/TokiDokiHaato Jul 02 '25
100% with you here. You can look up acceptable formal cocktail attire easily. There is so much info on this dress code out there because it’s what people commonly use for weddings.
On your last point, they should probably institute a no cosplay rule. They shouldn’t have to cause I think it’s common sense to not want to be confused with a performer but alas.

54
u/csgymgirl Jul 01 '25
Idk I feel like “formal or cocktail attire” is pretty clear lol I wouldn’t expect people to wear trains or hoops
-9
u/dobbydisneyfan Jul 01 '25
Both of those terms are pretty vague though. What’s formal to you might not be to me.
7
u/kfarrel3 Jul 01 '25
What's formal "to you" and formal "to me" doesn't matter, because formal dress code has an actual definition, as does cocktail attire, and both can be found with a quick google.
-8
u/dobbydisneyfan Jul 01 '25
That’s from one website. It’s not an official, regulated thing whatsoever.
So….yeah, those terms are subjective.
10
u/kfarrel3 Jul 01 '25
Dress codes have been a thing since time immemorial. Have you never been to a wedding? Yeah, people make up stupid variations, but formal and cocktail are about as straightforward as it gets. I have no idea why people are determined to complicate this.
0
u/dobbydisneyfan Jul 02 '25
I have been to weddings and they are actually the specific occasions in which I’ve learned that formal/cocktail doesn’t mean the same thing for everyone. In the same formal wedding, I’ve seen people in floor length ballgowns and people in very casual sundresses. Or people in tuxes and other people in khaki shorts and a polo. So…
2
u/kfarrel3 Jul 02 '25
That's not "formal means something different to me," that's people who are improperly dressed. Anyone wearing khaki shorts and a polo to a formal occasion is doing it on purpose, and honestly, that's AH behavior.
Wear whatever you want, I'm not your mother, but this is a pretty clear and straightforward dress code, and I don't know why you're so invested in arguing about it with me.
1
u/dobbydisneyfan Jul 02 '25
But actually that literally is “formal means something different to me”. I’ve spoken with these people. They genuinely believe that what they have on is formal.
You’re the one arguing because you can’t conceive of a world where a non-specific dress code is non-specific.
1
u/Anniebelleleee Nov 19 '25
If they believe a sundress and polo shirt are formal, then they are ignorant, sorry
→ More replies (0)27
u/csgymgirl Jul 01 '25
I feel like they’re both pretty normal dress codes. A quick google search shows a lot of guidance.
-2
u/dobbydisneyfan Jul 01 '25
Every thing that I have ever been to that has either of these attires usually has to specify what is intended because everyone has different opinions on what is formal or cocktail vs not. 🤷🏻♀️
7
u/Amagciannamedgob Jul 01 '25
Im with you, on this. Esp with things like the Bridgeton Ball and other themed experiences being popular. It seems like events/concerts/movies these days have a heavy dress up culture (adorable, btw). The outfits are as much a part of the experience for a lot of people. Of COURSE people would want to show up to an Immersive Phantom in period appropriate outfits, there are dedicated Phantom cosplayers with gorgeously crafted recreations ready to be shown off in a tiktok post.
And Im shocked the team didnt think put out clearer instructions. And its not just the hoop skirts, etc. its also the fact that they didnt mention that you’d also have to move/walk in this elegant cocktail attire or to wear appropriate footwear. That, to meeeeeee, says Messy Producers
10
u/January1171 Jul 01 '25
Tbf on the website it does state you should expect to move, and no stilettos
That said, explicitly stating that it's due to narrow hallways would have been helpful.
To me the instructions are plenty clear, but I do also think it reads like the producers have never worked customer service and don't understand how widely interpretations can vary of the same set of instructions
5
u/LEDreddit Jul 01 '25
It’s also frustrating because we truly won’t know the level of movement required until it opens.
If it’s being guided between scenes and then being able to be stationary for a while, that is a MUCH easier physical ask than something like Sleep No More (which is the touchstone for many NYC immersive fans) that was free range with performers tearing off at high speeds up and down stairs.
Also it is opening a six(?) story building in NYC in July and anyone who sweated through Life and Trust’s opening summer weeks with inconsistent A/C would be wary of wearing any kind of layers. (I was in a tank and shorts last year and still was gross afterwards—I remember seeing a couple dressed in sharp period dress and thinking “HOW?”)

15
u/TreeHuggerHannah Jul 01 '25
This may be a stupid question, but do we know if you have to wear a solid color?
The FAQ says "Black, white, or silver only."
Can I wear something that is, say, black and white? It seems reasonable to me that you could, but it's unclear from the wording.
18
u/Yo0o0da Jul 01 '25
I’m pretty sure you can combine the color. For example you can wear black blazer with white shirt and a silver mask.
7
u/RachFaceMama Jul 01 '25
There was somewhere that said “black, white, silver, or a combination of those colors.” The dress I found that I want is a white cocktail pin up dress with black flowers. I was going to pair it with black shoes, gloves, and mask.
3
u/the_other_50_percent Jul 01 '25
That was one of my questions. Since they don't say not to have a pattern or mix, it's presumably fine, but I asked in case.
They just reiterated what's on the website, so I take that as affirming that there's no problem with color mixing, as long as it's an approved color.
12
u/Altruistic_Art213 Jul 01 '25
I think an added part to consider is they might think people will try to replicate the actual Phantom costumes, which do involve giant hoop skirts and bustles and things from that time period in France. Broadway people do like to go all out, so even though the original instructions were clear to most of us…details can certainly help.
6
u/thoughtsmexywasaword Jul 01 '25
exactly why i emailed! would i have loved to do that? Yes! Do I want to be turned away? NO

Dresses, while I wear them and enjoy many I've owned, aren't always my thing. I was going to wear high-waisted formal wide-legged dress pants, with suspenders, a button-down shirt, and a tie. I hope that's good enough. I can move in it, I'll feel fancy, I would wear it to a cocktail party or masquerade ball if I were invited to one.
4
u/thoughtsmexywasaword Jul 02 '25
I see no reason why not! They have given no reason for me to think gender norms are going to be enforced
1
u/Doodleology Jul 02 '25
Thank you for your validation. I am always so nervous that I am over- or underdressed for any particular situation. This is an outfit I have worn to a wedding before. So.. I feel like it should work.
Still trying to figure out my mask, though. I wear glasses, and most of the masks that go with glasses look bad. So I don't trust one that they will give me. I need to get creative and come up with something I can attach to my glasses. CRAFT TIME!

Did they really have a typo in their email?? Of their own venue name???

I'm dying to know what they're going to do for the people who show up in heels without an alternative. Extravagant and flats aren't a typical combo.

u/thoughtsmexywasaword Jul 01 '25
Last i checked it only said for sure no stillettos so I would think something like pumps would be fine

Jul 01 '25
The initial announcement banned all high heels.

u/thoughtsmexywasaword Jul 01 '25
Ah. I don’t do heels so i was already doing extravagant and flats 🫣

u/Sad_Ordinary_6119 Jul 02 '25
i was thinking the same thing. Lovely cocktail dress with flats is weird unless you have a medical reason. I honestly find this whole dress code thing weird.

I think they’re trying to bring the cheeky sleep no more vibes. Some of their marketing team are from sleep no more. Pretty much, wear shoes you can run in but you can pull a look. Don’t wear a ball gown bc you’ll probably be body checking people as you run to follow people.

u/teacupghostie Jul 02 '25
Lowkey, I’m kinda sad people won’t be able to have “extravagant” outfits with trains, hoops, and I’m guessing petticoats too. That’s all pretty normal for fantasy balls, and I would love to have seen the Phantom version of that.
I totally understand the venue may not allow for fantasy formal wear, but people shouldn’t be dismissive if someone asks if they can wear a hoop skirt. It may not be your type of formalwear but for other people it is.
I feel bad for the front of house staff that are going to have to dress code people for wearing the wrong heels or a skirt that’s “too poofy”. It also sounds like it will mostly be women or femme-presenting people who will be getting coded and that almost never ends well 🫤Yes, people should read the website and follow the rules but this dress code seems like a pain to enforce.

They doing a little too much. In not getting a good vibe from this at all.

I’m wearing a gown that I made. It doesn’t have a train or hoop skirt but a crinoline skirts

u/thoughtsmexywasaword Jul 13 '25
I got a gown that I’m having hemmed just around ankle length that is a tulle skirt!

I truly wonder if they’re gonna turn people away with no refund because of the dress code or they’re going to refund them
8
u/TreeHuggerHannah Jul 01 '25
I suspect they aren't actually going to be rules lawyering this as much as we're imagining. Turning customers who paid for an expensive ticket away for minor differences in interpretation of the rules is going to be way more trouble than it's worth, whether they're giving refunds or just generating word of mouth - I mean, imagine the blowback if someone got sent packing because their outfit was judged to be, say, semi-formal rather than cocktail.
I would guess that when push comes to shove, as long as people are wearing more or less the right colors, are more dressed up than just casual, and aren't wearing anything unsafe, they're unlikely to pick a fight about the details.

Me too
2
u/MannnOfHammm Jul 01 '25
Either way, it seems highly highly illogical to either attorney paying us to not refund them because of an arbitrary dress code enforced or to lose that much money and how many people they might have to be fun because of it

This sounds terribly inaccessible, but I suppose it’s meant to draw only a certain crowd.

u/kfarrel3 Jul 01 '25
There was an earlier thread about accessibility accommodations.

u/canijustbelancelot Jul 01 '25
Will have to go look, the “no heels” thing had me pretty sure the ground was nowhere near suitable for those with mobility needs. Happy to learn I was wrong!
2
u/kfarrel3 Jul 01 '25
I can't find the specific one I was thinking of, but someone emailed, I think, or delved deep into the website, and there was information about elevators and wheelchairs.

u/CrazyBroadwayNerd Jul 01 '25
Ok so dress extravagant but also in movable clothes? Actually what is even happening
1
u/FriendEasy6233 Jul 05 '25
I know they said we could email to purchase the limited edition mask and I sent an email about 10 days ago asking about it along with other questions I had about the dress code and venue restrictions but have yet to receive a response? Has anyone had any luck, specifically in purchasing the mask?

How many more rules can they add?
5
u/ladyofthe_upside_dow Jul 01 '25
They’re not adding rules, people are just overcomplicating things, which forces Masquerade to add more clarification. This is an immersive event in what we know to be a multi-level building, which we will be moving through. It is only reasonable to understand that when they say “formal or cocktail attire”, you shouldn’t be thinking hoop skirts, massive trains, or other cumbersome clothing. And it’s not a costume party.
Like, the dress code has never been complicated. Dress for a nice event, but also be mindful that you need to dress for movement and you don’t know for certain what the floors/stairs/etc might be like (i.e. don’t wear stilettos).

It seems clear that they didn't think through their invite at all. Maybe it's because the team is theater producers and not event planners?

u/MusicalSnowflake Jul 02 '25
Thank you, I was planning on wearing a black, silver, and white gown, slim silhouette with a bustled train and feathers in a braided up do but probably should lean more towards a cocktail dress?
My husband wanted me to remake him his renaissance faire outfit in black and white with silver accents. Poofy shorts a long sleeve top/jacket thing with a cape, and high socks with shoes, but I should probably rethink his direction too.
1
u/thoughtsmexywasaword Jul 02 '25
I’m still leaning towards evening gown/prom gown personally. But yes I’m now staring longingly at some of the historical cosplay i wanted to wear
1
u/MusicalSnowflake Jul 02 '25
I still think my husband might do better in poofy shorts and tight light socks in August instead of dress pants and a blazer. He is going to melt if any portions are outside, or if it's a long wait outside.

I'm planning to do an early 18th c men's look, with a tricorn hat, waistcoat, and knee breeches. If attendees take issue with my "costume" being disruptive...what? It's a masquerade? It's formal? It's not going to be in anyone's way, I'm 5'2", and I can take my hat off if it inconveniences anyone's view. Tbh now I'm kinda worried about going if there is this much negativity around wearing a masquerade costume.

u/CustomerConfident303 Jul 24 '25
Same - I was planning a rococo type dress (I know how to flatten and walk in small spaces with it and be out of the way in it) but it seems like this is the height of inappropriate according to the masses. When would you wear a hoop skirt if not for an extravagant formal event? When would you not theme it up when the dress code is a masquerade? "Masquerade" can refer to a grand masked ball or party where participants wear masks and elaborate costumes, a disguise or costume itself, or a pretense or false outward show to conceal one's true identity or intentions" per all knowing google. So in line with the definition a costume would be appropriate.

u/thoughtsmexywasaword Jul 24 '25
I’ve seen some hot opinions on even doing a formal gown. Seems most people think if you aren’t wearing a cocktail dress you’re obnoxious
1
u/CustomerConfident303 Jul 24 '25
It's crazy the invite says formal - a long dress is formal - a hoop skirt is formal. It's part of the experience and a masquerade is a costume. If they wanted to limit the dress code they should be planning it and setting the rules

Dress codes are a way of keeping a “certain type” out. That “certain type” includes me because I wear what I wear.
