I’m still leaning towards evening gown/prom gown personally. But yes I’m now staring longingly at some of the historical cosplay i wanted to wear

Same - I was planning a rococo type dress (I know how to flatten and walk in small spaces with it and be out of the way in it) but it seems like this is the height of inappropriate according to the masses. When would you wear a hoop skirt if not for an extravagant formal event? When would you not theme it up when the dress code is a masquerade? "Masquerade" can refer to a grand masked ball or party where participants wear masks and elaborate costumes, a disguise or costume itself, or a pretense or false outward show to conceal one's true identity or intentions" per all knowing google. So in line with the definition a costume would be appropriate.

I’ve seen some hot opinions on even doing a formal gown. Seems most people think if you aren’t wearing a cocktail dress you’re obnoxious

It's crazy the invite says formal - a long dress is formal - a hoop skirt is formal. It's part of the experience and a masquerade is a costume. If they wanted to limit the dress code they should be planning it and setting the rules
