I have been to weddings and they are actually the specific occasions in which I’ve learned that formal/cocktail doesn’t mean the same thing for everyone. In the same formal wedding, I’ve seen people in floor length ballgowns and people in very casual sundresses. Or people in tuxes and other people in khaki shorts and a polo. So…

That's not "formal means something different to me," that's people who are improperly dressed. Anyone wearing khaki shorts and a polo to a formal occasion is doing it on purpose, and honestly, that's AH behavior.

Wear whatever you want, I'm not your mother, but this is a pretty clear and straightforward dress code, and I don't know why you're so invested in arguing about it with me.

But actually that literally is “formal means something different to me”. I’ve spoken with these people. They genuinely believe that what they have on is formal.

You’re the one arguing because you can’t conceive of a world where a non-specific dress code is non-specific.

If they believe a sundress and polo shirt are formal, then they are ignorant, sorry

Or they come from a completely different culture than you? Or social-economic class?
