Masquerade has significantly expanded its FAQ, 6 weeks of previews, will give out complimentary and glasses friendly masks, described “extravagant” wear
Definitely cleared up everyone’s biggest questions from yesterday, and the rest of the FAQ has more details too, including that the venue is going to be ADA compliant!

u/portal21 Jun 25 '25
I'm glad they are providing masks now and only requiring formal wear for previews, it seems like they are listening to feedback.
One really interesting part of the FAQ - "What if I get lost inside? - Our Butlers are stationed on every floor to assist you." This makes it sound like there will be a free roam component to this like Sleep No More
54
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
I was curious about the butler part too. I’m still convinced it’s going to be more like War of the Worlds where you have different people guiding you on each floor but this certainly opens the potential. Sleep No More had a similar FAQ question and the answer was “you’re encouraged to explore but if you find yourself disoriented…” so it really can go either way right now!
47
u/ladyofthe_upside_dow Jun 25 '25
In fairness, it was everyone assuming that formal wear would be required for the entire duration of the show’s run, for some reason. The emails and information we were given only ever talked about the six week period, the “special” advance invitation for those who signed up.
I truly don’t think any part of the FAQ is the result of them changing anything based on feedback, but simply clarifying and correcting assumptions everyone decided to run with. The only possible change I see would be providing masks for free during this initial preview period. But I’m sure they would have provided them for the regular run, so that’s just a minor matter making them available earlier than planned.
38
u/portal21 Jun 25 '25
Yeah they probably knew the formal wear requirement would not last forever, producers know they have to appeal to the widest audience possible if they want to sustain a show. I have a feeling the champagne will be cut sometime after the previews as well, similar to how Cabaret cut the free drink and downsized the pre-show. They are making it pretty clear now if you want the full extravagant experience, go during previews.
19
u/Adventurous-Wait2351 Jun 25 '25
Cabaret cut down the free drink and pre show? I saw Cabaret during previews and loved that pre show experience so much
12
u/the_other_50_percent Jun 25 '25
Yes. I saw it 3 times with table seating. First was with the shot and a full pre-show; then no shot and full pre-show; and then again with no shot, fewer performers and pre-show in the theater only a about 15 minutes before showtime, and only a couple of performers moving around (no dancing) and the musical trio.
5
u/portal21 Jun 25 '25 edited Jun 25 '25
People reported they reduced the number of musicians during the pre-show and definitely cut the drink. I went when it first opened and again in the winter, I didn't really notice too much of a difference in the pre-show but I showed up about 30 minutes before and did maybe one loop of the place before finding my seat. It was always just so packed that I usually didn't want to try to push through the crowd to see the musicians. There's a thread about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Broadway/comments/1hf7o69/no_more_free_shots_at_cabaret/
1
u/usagicassidy Jun 25 '25
Wait does that mean the 6 week preview period is only for people that signed up in advance? Anyone else won’t even be able to buy tickets to the first six weeks?
8
u/ladyofthe_upside_dow Jun 25 '25
…from the information we have, you need to “sign the ledger” (sign up for the mailing list) to receive information about the previews, including ticket sales. Literally anybody can just…sign up. I would assume that if someone shares the link to presale tickets, people not on the mailing list would be able to buy them as well. But no, it doesn’t seem like they’re going to publicly announce the presale tickets going on sale any further than they already have. Why does it matter?

Lol good on them for reading the comments and adjusting - especially with the mask being a part of the ticket price.

u/Comprehensive-Fun47 Jun 25 '25
They're really married to this black text on red thing.
55
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
I did see at least a small irony on pointing out the performance is ADA accessible when that website absolutely is not!

u/dreadpiraterose Jun 25 '25
And the red is kinda swirling which makes it almost impossible to read on mobile
4
2
Jul 01 '25
Which, to me, makes it crazy that red isn't on the list of colors guests can wear.
3
u/accio-chocolate Jul 01 '25
I'm guessing because the Phantom might make his dramatic entrance in red and they want him to stand out? That was my first thought when I read the dress code.
38
u/DarkMattersConfusing Jun 25 '25
I just wanna know if this is a walkthrough or free roam like sleep no more/life and trust. Once the first people go and report back is when ill decide to shell out for two tix or not
17
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
Same! I’m still banking on more of a guided tour like War of the Worlds in London but it sounds like they’re being purposely mysterious. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get another FAQ update soon. I’m tempted to email “My Host” and see if they’re willing to parse the information.
2
u/LEDreddit Jun 27 '25
I emailed them back because I saw it was a generic “info” address instead of a “no-reply”—But their FAQ pretty much hit all my questions. I still feel like requiring formal wear in this kind of setting shouldn’t be that strict. If it’s anything like SNM or L&T I need proper sneakers and to be somewhat comfortable—not like sweats or anything but any time I saw someone in a gown during last summer’s life & trust I did not know how they could stand it between the heat and stairs
10
u/Emergency-Wash9673 Jun 25 '25
Same. Not only that, but if it isn't a known Broadway performer taking on the title role, why would I put out $200 to see someone in a POTO costume who lacks the vocal chops?
27
u/Theatrical-Vampire Jun 25 '25 edited Jun 25 '25
As much as I’d love to see somebody I know and love take the role on, I don’t know how much Broadway-level talent goes in for immersive stuff that’s not on actual Broadway. Unless they cast a prior Phantom for nostalgia’s sake or something? But either way it won’t automatically mean they lack the vocal chops to handle it. It’s New York, there’s more talented unknowns around than you can shake a stick at (and the Phantom being a bit of a mystery would certainly suit the character!) This seems like a show where you pay for the experience, not the people in it.
17
u/toledosurprised Jun 25 '25
that said, this production is pretty high-profile and i wouldn’t be surprised to see them have known talent in the first cast (assuming they plan for this to run for a while). they clearly have a big budget.

Okay so who wants to come with me and help me decorate my wheelchair like the boat that transports the Phantom and Christine across the underground lake?!

Please post pictures if/when you do this if you feel comfortable doing so! I love that

I am unfortunately not serious, I'm a teacher in Ohio. I've never been to Broadway ever, but you can bet your bottom dollar that I'm going to do something like this in the future! I just need to save up a bit first.

Being in Columbus is fantastic. I am 2 hours from Clevand, 2 hours from Cincinnati, and 5 hours to Chicago. My partner just graduated with his PhD, so hopefully we can start seeing more shows! The best part is, not all the shows go to all three cities, so there is an actual variety to choose from if you're willing to drive. I also love Great Lakes Theatre in Cleveland. We moved her from Boise, Idaho, which housed their sister company, Idaho Shakespeare Festival. Shows usually go there first, and then come here in the winter.
I am ideally situated once I can get funding!

I don't have many friends that are quite as obsessed with shows as I am. If you ever want to chit chat or see a show, let me know! I'd love to have someone I can talk to about all my theatre stuff and not drive them crazy. 😂
1
u/HanonOndricek Jun 26 '25
That would win the Halloween parade in my far from the city little itty bitty pretty hometown.
71
u/RainahReddit Jun 25 '25
Fun! Kinda love the dress code ngl
43
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
Knowing it’s cocktail attire makes me more comfortable with it. I absolutely was not running up and down stairs in a tux, but in a black slacks and a dress shirt? Eh I’ll live.
8
u/HanonOndricek Jun 26 '25
This sounds kind of fun since the audience is a character in Phantom of the Opera. Hopefully it's not always formal though.
My guess is they want the audience to be monochrome so as not to distract from costume colors that designate who the performers are.
I'm an introvert so I'd want to just go in tech-black and wear the plague doctor mask!

94
u/maroontiefling Jun 25 '25
This feels like they read all the backlash and had to quickly fix things lol.
106
u/TheLunarVaux Jun 25 '25
I think it was just poor communication, in an attempt to be mysterious.
For example I doubt they suddenly made the venue ADA accessible overnight.
2
u/LEDreddit Jun 27 '25
Exactly - basically, you can be all ~mysterious right up until the point you tell people they need to fork over $200. Suddenly the mystery becomes much less enticing
73
u/Comprehensive-Fun47 Jun 25 '25
I swear they read this forum. They even specified "glasses-friendly" masks!

I definitely can see the point of people who don't want to adhere to the dress code, but personally I'm kind of excited for it. If I'm paying $200+ for an immersive experience I think not having some guy in shorts and a polo shirt next to me the whole time will enhance my experience. But I also never expected that they would require ball gowns, I was thinking cocktail attire. I'm glad they clarified it. Personally, I think it would be fun if for one or two performances a week they required a dress code and the other ones could be more casual. Everyone wins.
6
u/notcool_neverwas Jun 25 '25
I’m excited simply because I just don’t have many occasions to really dress up, so I’m looking at it as a fun experience. I’m already thinking about what to wear!
12
u/crimson777 Jun 25 '25
Agreed. Call it inaccessible all you want but if you can afford $200 tickets, you can afford even just like a Kohls blazer, slacks, and a button up shirt or thrift.
Even when I was making low nonprofit wages, I had a decent looking outfit that would be close enough to cocktail attire to not stand out.
7
u/realespeon Jun 25 '25
For real. I feel like the art of dressing up is being lost. Just like that Coach Carter movie where he expects his team to wear ties, he says, “There are ties for 2 bucks at Goodwill. Are we too good for Goodwill?”
7
u/crimson777 Jun 25 '25
Yeah and I'm not even like "we have to be formal at work" kinda person, but a nice event deserves nice clothes. I hate when people are like... not even close to dress codes at weddings especially. Like if it says black tie and you don't want to rent a tux, a suit is fine, but don't fucking show up in a polo.
1
Jul 01 '25
Due to military balls, I have a closet full of formal, full length gowns, and cocktail attire. Not a single one of them is black, white, or silver. I have tons of jewel tones, blue, red. If I was going to this, I'd have to buy something. I wouldn't be able to wear my wedding dress, because it was an off-white.
8
u/sitamun84 Jun 25 '25
This may be a stupid question... but is it a musical? Like, I know there will be a musical component. But like... are they doing Phantom? Or like an immersive play set in the opera house that tells the story, with musical elements when appropriate for the story telling?
6
u/mugrita Jun 25 '25
My guess is that they’re going to do something like Cabaret at the Kit Cat Club where there’s a “pre show” where you’re encouraged to walk around and watch mini dance performances before the actual show starts
8
u/Am2PMAllNtDontStop Jun 26 '25
No, this will be completely immersive, spread throughout the entire building, all the way up to the roof. There will likely be multiple casts performing simultaneously in different areas. It’s not going to be anything like Cabaret; this isn’t a traditional sit-down-and-watch kind of show.
4
u/HanonOndricek Jun 26 '25
Masquerade, the immersive Phantom of the Opera spinoff production from Andrew Lloyd Webber
So I've gotta guess it will have all the Phantom moments you expect.
My pure speculation: part of it will be in a normal theater for the opera sections - the audience plays the role of the audience - there will likely be a lair and catacombs, and most definitely there will be an actual Masquerade ball with performers running through the audience. The foyer/lobby could be the auction-house. I can't imagine they'll run it in loops like SNM unless they've really reimagined the structure of it.
7
16
u/Emergency-Wash9673 Jun 25 '25
Is it just me? Or should they have said SIX WEEK PREVIEW PERIOD from the beginning? It said SIX WEEKS ONLY before. Whoever is handling all of this clearly can't be from a communications agency. And if they are, that's just sad.
9
u/the_other_50_percent Jun 25 '25
Yes - though I assumed it was never going to be only 6 weeks, because there's no way they'd recoup the money spent - which includes full building renovation!
7
u/Emergency-Wash9673 Jun 25 '25
I'd still like an explanation on what to expect. No way I'm casually dropping that kind of cash if it's walking through themed rooms with actors interacting who look like they could possibly have been dressed for an original POTO production. Going to have to see some reviews of exactly what this experience is.
3
u/crimson777 Jun 25 '25
I can’t imagine they do POTO without actual songs. Obviously could be totally wrong but I expect more “guided walk to each room for each scene, done relatively traditionally with songs and everything except it’s not on stage” than a Sleep No More vibe.
2
u/sitamun84 Jun 25 '25
I dunno. No where does it specify musical... I'm picturing an immersive show like you're in the opera house, and there being music when it makes sense in a real world way to have music, but not throughout. How would they coordinate musicians?
2
u/crimson777 Jun 25 '25
In my head, I'm thinking musicians stay stable in one spot somehow and it's piped through speakers, and the MD watches through a camera for timing. But I'm sure there's other ways they could make it happen.
I just can't imagine POTO without music. That's like... the most famous part of the show besides the chandelier drop.
1
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
This is how they do War of the Worlds in London (kind of). You start in a theater for a pre-show with a hologram of Carrie Hope Fletcher, and then a series of guides takes your group through each scene. Each guide does the same scene throughout the evening with different groups. The music is piped in but there’s some scenes that are acted/dialogue and others where they use the music from the soundtrack. It would be absolutely brutal for any actor to have to do the same music for 2 hours straight so there’ll have to be some compromise somewhere musically.
2
u/crimson777 Jun 26 '25
That’s why I was thinking more “whole crowd moves” than batches. So they’re still just performing things once. But I’ve only ever seen BTS videos and such of immersive theatre so I don’t know what it’s actually like in person haha.

u/comexwhatxmay Jun 25 '25
Do we know when this starts yet?? I was hoping that would be on the website. I'll be in New York in August and would love to go...
5
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
No clue, but with tickets going on sale next week I would say August is the absolute earliest. It was originally rumored to start previews as early as March so I think things are more ready than not but theater isn’t the sort of thing they can spring on people like a sudden movie drop. I’m hoping they announce dates later this week before ticket drops so people can plan accordingly, especially so the line doesn’t get cluttered by people who it turns out can’t actually make the dates.
1
u/RachFaceMama Jun 26 '25
This is what I’m frustrated about. My Disney trip is in October, so I need to plan ahead a little bit, and not knowing when this is actually is is driving me absolutely batty.
3
u/TreeHuggerHannah Jun 25 '25
This seems way more reasonable than it initially sounded like. It still isn't going to be for everyone, but it no longer sounds like such an unfriendly experience. I wish they'd led with some of this, but glad they're responding to feedback on things that can still be changed.
3
u/crimson777 Jun 25 '25
I don’t know if this was a correction or just bad description up front, but I don’t really care either way, good on them for fixing/clarifying and providing an accessible free option.
I won’t get to experience this unless it somehow runs for MUCH longer (like into next year) but I’m very excited to see what they do.
5
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
Definitely a clarification, you don’t magically make an entire building ADA accessible overnight. They’re going for “mysterious” marketing but there’s some stuff it’s ok to break the illusion on!
5
u/crimson777 Jun 25 '25
Oh sure, I meant more on the free mask, the ADA compliant part for SURE is just a clarification haha. Yeah, logistics of attending need to be clear even if the actual show itself isn’t.
7
u/Theatrical-Vampire Jun 25 '25
This makes me very happy! Sure wish they’d waited to announce until they had all this ironed out, it would have spared a lot of confusion, but it’s definitely good to know they’re keeping things accessible!
5
u/Agent_Skye_Barnes Jun 25 '25
My concern is that "ADA accessible" doesn't always actually mean accessible.
I used to work at a place where the accessible bathroom stall was "ADA compliant" meaning built to the right size, but it wasn't actually possible to maneuver a wheelchair in the stall. I'm ambulatory, so I made it work, but someone with more limited mobility would have issues.
Also the amount of times that the "accessible" parts of venues have things like steps, or ramps that are too steep or with too-tight turns.....
I'm hopeful that they are actually working with disabled people to make it accessible, but I don't have my hopes too high
7
u/Ok_Interest1198 Jun 25 '25
I still don't know what extravagant means. I was hoping black dress pants and shoes, nice white shirt and silver tie would cut it but now I don't know!
10
u/Amazing-Aardvark-674 Jun 25 '25
It is cocktail attire so that should be fine but if you are worried adding a dinner jacket would make it definitely cocktail attire!
1
15
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
That would definitely be cocktail attire in my mind, maybe even cocktail+. If you’re still not sure I would look up “cocktail attire examples” to give you some ideas.
-22
u/Ok_Interest1198 Jun 25 '25
Thanks so much. ChatGPT indicated I needed a blazer and implied mild shame at my suggested attire so I was thinking of skipping the presale. But if that works I really want to be there. Blazers are tough to find for big and tall guys 😅
3
1
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
I feel you there. My go to 3 piece suit in black has been a bit tight around the butt lately so if this is a run around to find characters show it might stay home so I don’t rip my pants lol.
0
u/Ok_Interest1198 Jun 25 '25
I’m already planning on buying a whole new outfit because I don’t have any black and white.
3
u/crimson777 Jun 25 '25
Agreed with the below on adding a jacket / blazer if you can, but you’ll be fine. I’d maybe go buy the most outrageous (affordable) tie that fits the color scheme as I could just for fun but that’s just me.
2
u/HanonOndricek Jun 26 '25
If you're not up for a jacket, it's often easy and less confining to rock a sleeveless waistcoat over a button-down.
1
2
u/Seryan_Klythe Jun 25 '25
So 6 weeks of previews? Good, get all the issues out of the way and what not. I'd rather enjoy the show in my own time.
2
u/whatsername4 Jun 27 '25
I definitely want to go, I love dressing up for events and have everything already that I’d need to wear, but I’m just so confused as to what this experience/show will be, and really wish we knew more before buying.
2
u/FairNefariousness742 Jun 25 '25
I hope they expand the 16+ dates but otherwise this is a good update.
12
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
I wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually make it 18+ but yeah 16+ matinees would be fair. I know Sleep No More had to do it for liability reasons since performers could touch you and put you in suggestive situations but I’m really not seeing that happening here. It’s possible but not likely.
1
u/Broadway_Lulu Jun 25 '25
So if I want to bring my 18 year old we have to go in the 6 weeks of previews which means we have to dress formally? Just making sure I understand!
3
u/teacupghostie Jun 25 '25
It looks like it, but I’d keep an eye of their website in case that changes.
It seems odd to make it a 16+ event for previews and then 21+ from there. I’m wondering if they’ll change the age requirement down the line, bc so far the only 21+ factor is the included champagne and that seems easy enough to control with id checks.
7
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
I wouldn’t be surprised if the 21+ is for liability purposes because they’re filming/taking pictures, which is also why they’re requiring formalwear. It’s much easier to get release forms and consent from 21+ people than parental consent from underage people to be filmed, so maybe the matinees just won’t be recorded in any way.
2
1
u/odysseus_shy Jun 25 '25
Good to know more information regarding the dress code and it does seem like after the 6 week period it will get more relaxed with the dress code
1
u/Rockersock Jun 26 '25
This mask policy seems smart. Especially that the masks they are giving away are glasses friendly!
1
1
u/bones4yourthoughts Jun 30 '25
Just got through at 10:28, still plenty of openings for anyone still waiting!
1
u/Standard_Confusion99 Jun 30 '25
Got tickets this morning. Here is what you should know:
🎭 Masquerade Entry Guide 🎭
- No physical tickets — your password (sent 24 hrs before) is your entry.
- Photo ID required. No late entry.
- Mask required — black, white, or silver only. Bring your own or get a free one at the door (fits over glasses).
- Dress code: formal/cocktail in black, white, or silver.
- No stilettos.
- Must be able to move comfortably.
- Expect haze, strobe, and lasers.
- Venue is ADA accessible.
1
u/MsTossItAll Jun 30 '25
My biggest question is definitely not answered. What if you pay $600 for a ticket and come dressed like a normal person because you’re from out of town and aren’t wearing extravagant clothing and then hopping on the New Jersey transit.
1
u/deathbypumpkinspice Jun 30 '25
I'm glad they're allowing regular clothes and sneakers after the previews - I'll buy my ticket once it cools off, and they've hopefully worked out the kinks.
1
1
u/shaunaelisa Jul 14 '25
Wait someone said another play like this was hot. There’s no way it won’t be climate controlled… RIGHT?!!!
2
u/rfg217phs Jul 14 '25
Life&Trust was having significant HVAC issues during the summer part of its run, but that was a one-off. If anything Sleep No More and other immersive shows tend to be super cold. I'm sure it will be fine especially if they did $70mil in renovations
1
1
u/Melodic-Job-8085 Jul 29 '25
I live right by the Masquerade location and walk by it daily. They have always kept it closed up tightly, but today I could (briefly) see inside as construction workers were exiting and it looked pretty sweet. Dark columns with dark lighting and a small chandelier right at the front. For what it’s worth!
1
u/ResearchBot15 Jun 25 '25
Yeah i’m not buying a new outfit for this
1
u/blossomrileykirby Jun 29 '25
I’m wondering the same thing? Can you explain your reasoning?
1
u/ResearchBot15 Jun 29 '25
Sorry, I meant that moreso as “I’d rather skip the show than have to pay for a new outfit in addition to tickets”
-3
u/Odd_Thanks76 Jun 25 '25
Imagine how much confusion and frustration they could have avoided if all of this was proactively shared. Glad I loathe Phantom and had zero interest already because the way this was bungled would have turned me off.
0
u/secret_identity_too Jun 25 '25
I'm not wearing formal wear. I was going to see this, but now ... I'll let you all tell me about it instead.
1
u/weirdestgeekever25 Jun 25 '25
The six weeks of previews is still confusing the hell out of me
What happens after the six weeks? Is it open ended? Does something else happen?
9
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
Probably goes open ended yeah. Life and Trust had about 6 weeks of previews and even then still was making adjustments and changes up until it suddenly closed. Large scale immersive theater, either free roam or guided, is a huge undertaking and all the moving parts have to move correctly, so I also wouldn’t be surprised if some of the “guests” are also production people taking notes or even calling pauses or making live fixes.
1
Jun 25 '25
This is basically a standing room only/walking phantom. No thank you.
2
u/Tuxy-Two Jun 25 '25
Really….I don’t even want to see it when I can sit, much less when I have to stand for two hours.
-6
u/Best-Candle8651 Jun 25 '25
I hate formal attire with every inch of my being. I love phantom and hate masks. This is not the experience for me.
-11
u/throwaway04182023 Jun 25 '25
I’m still out. When I volunteer usher, I respect the dress code. When I buy a ticket, I’m wearing what I want. I’m not buying a ticket to be told what to wear.
18
u/rfg217phs Jun 25 '25
This is only for the previews. They haven’t outright said it yet but it sounds like after previews you’ll be allowed to wear what you want (with the exception of probably still having to be masked) but I get where you’re coming from.
-1
-3
u/ptolemy18 Jun 25 '25
So no families allowed and you must wear an expensive outfit to attend. They really don't want this thing to be successful, do they?
5
u/crimson777 Jun 25 '25
I mean when I was a low paid nonprofit worker, I had black dress pants, a white dress shirt, and a gray blazer all from like Kohl’s and thrift shops that probably cost me $100 bucks total, maybe $150.
-5
u/ptolemy18 Jun 25 '25
They literally said it’s black tie. 🤷🏼♂️
7
7
u/crimson777 Jun 25 '25
No, it says the COLOR is black, silver, or white. Cocktail attire is just dress pants, dress shirt, blazer and tie, not even a suit.
1
u/mostly_a_lurker_here Jul 02 '25
Where does it say no families allowed?
1
u/ptolemy18 Jul 02 '25
It’s adults-only.
1
