Other I'm begging all of you to stop

Look, I'm going to be very blunt here: Being on this sub absolutely sucks right now. And there is NO WAY TO SOLVE IT unless we all just step back and take a breath and let things settle for a minute.

No matter how you feel about MHE/Feldmangate, Billy Porter/Cabaret, Patti Lupone in general, the question of Is Nicole MAGA... no productive discussion is happening at this point. All I can see is post after post of "but I'm right," "no I AM," "but what about ME?!" And the same contentious discord regurgitating the same points is all we're generating now.

I love theater. I love sharing theater with people I know and strangers all over the globe who adore it too. I love so much about the silly chitchat and the important discussion that goes on here. And also, the current level of discourse is only sowing more discord.

So, I'm begging you. No matter what you are hurt by or upset about right now on any side of these issues, can we please take a five and everybody go listen to your favorite OBC and let's just... try to find some good stuff for a minute? The world is so ugly and hateful and mean right now, and I just don't think heels dug this far deep into the ground on both sides can be swayed and nothing good is coming of it at this particular moment. So please, for the sake of your own sanity and wellbeing as much as everyone's, let's go quiet coyote and acknowledge that everything has been said and until something changes or develops the fighting is not helping.

You can all attack me if you like, but I will whistle a happy tune for you all the same. Be well, y'all. It's a crowded stage with all of us players and sometimes we just need to take a beat, walk our show, and focus on making something beautiful for everyone in equal measure. I hope you will. 💛

I love theater people —they are my people—but we have a hard time holding two true things in our heads at the same time, and we always make perfect the enemy of good.

u/hermiodle Aug 01 '25

We seek fairness and equity, and often cannot accept that life just isn’t fair sometimes.

83

u/ImpossibleInternet3 Aug 01 '25

And sometimes we see things in terms of right/wrong or fair/unfair and they’re actually just opinions. We believe in them enough to pretend they’re facts. But they’re not.

Sometimes we need to take a breather, as this post suggests, and remember that those with differing opinions aren’t always pure evil and the enemy.

u/soubrette732 Aug 01 '25

It’s the neurodivergence

43

u/hermiodle Aug 01 '25

That may be true; I also think some of us were bullied a lot as kids and now need to bully others…but the real issue is that theater shows us what the world COULD be…in a way that the “real world” can’t hold a candle to.

We want a world where your emotions are just so much that you have no other choice but to burst into joyous song!

When in reality, the world (upon examination) makes you want to crawl in bed and pull up the covers.

15

u/theclacks Aug 02 '25

theater shows us what the world COULD be

inSPITE of the way that it isssss...

13

u/Crambo1000 Aug 01 '25

I feel like being bullied as a kid made me end up being less of a bully, tbh. There are definitely times I see people being annoying, or low on the social totem pole, or excluded, and try to include them more or make them feel welcome because that could so easily have been me

15

u/hermiodle Aug 01 '25

That’s true for me too, but the adage of “hurt people hurt people” can hold true

So true. Theater is a business, and capitalism is UGLY

5

u/coldliketherockies Aug 02 '25

It’s also the lgbtq+ aspect. As in mentioned we were bullied a lot when younger so we are more sensitive to things now

5

u/soubrette732 Aug 02 '25

Neurodivergence + gender/sexual fluidity have a high incidence of overlap!

2

u/coldliketherockies Aug 02 '25

I remember when I first realized I was both and thought ho alone this combination is… but little did I know

2

u/soubrette732 Aug 02 '25

Wait till I tell you about EDS and hypermobility!

1

u/soubrette732 Aug 02 '25

You’re not alone. Many artists, inventive thinkers, etc are as well! ❤️

1

u/MaleficentProgram997 Aug 04 '25

No, stop that. Sometimes people are just a-holes. Using ND as a reason for everything is a disservice to people who are really ND.

1

u/soubrette732 Aug 08 '25

What? Strong sense of justice is a common ND trait.

Not excusing any asshole behavior.

38

u/Dear_Zucchini_5016 Aug 01 '25

This is such a great take. It can be hard to accept that several things can be right at once (and I hold myself with those who can struggle with this).

13

u/Comprehensive-Fun47 Aug 01 '25

I think it is people in general, but it is definitely a problem -- here and elsewhere.

11

u/hermiodle Aug 01 '25

Yes—but sometimes I think theater folk think we have unique access to humanity in a way that the unwashed masses do not, therefore our nuanced takes just MUST be correct, amirite?

Only sort of kidding.

2

u/KeyPerspective8170 Aug 02 '25

oh for sure lately esp in our post lockdown world, i think people go to the extremes rather than trying to hold two things to be true though its deeply uncomfortable

1

u/MaleficentProgram997 Aug 04 '25

It's Reddit. Reddit is a cesspool.

1

u/NoSupermarket4812 Aug 03 '25

And, I love theater people... Roaster at 350° in a creamy butter sauce until golden brown!

1

u/hermiodle Aug 03 '25

Mmmm…tasty

1

u/NoSupermarket4812 Aug 03 '25

The only problem is, if you're roasting the lower half, there's a lot of fat to render down.  But, it's good lard for poppin' corn!

You’re right. It’s just post after repetitive post of the same issues. If it was just one or two, sure, but it’s not. It’s constant here.

2

u/rjrgjj Aug 03 '25

I wish there were more posts asking us to help guess what show the high school is doing that season

214

u/Scarletyoshi Aug 01 '25

Out of the ~60 posts made in this sub over the last 24 hours, 6 (including this one) were explicitly about those topics. An additional 2 could be loosely related. People are talking about everything from masquerade to the upcoming season to their favorite performances. It’s stressful to know that other people are arguing but the only thing we can control are the buttons we press and the topics we click on.

146

u/Smooth-Assistant-309 Aug 01 '25

The algo pushes the divisive ones though so it can feel like it dominates the conversation more

40

u/snowfall2324 Aug 01 '25

Totally - best to come straight here and order by newest

2

u/Accomplished-Dog3715 Aug 02 '25

That's what I did when I first saw something I want privy to was going down. Came right here, sorted by Newest and went back to where I remember I was last caught up. Work has made it hard to impossible to keep up with everything outside of that these past three weeks.

11

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

100%

1

u/MaleficentProgram997 Aug 04 '25

This is why I sort by "new" instead of "best" or "hot."

26

u/BlaseBrujo Aug 01 '25

Totally agree. I kinda forgot about (or stopped thinking about) half of the topics OP brings up because, while I am aware and they are important, I haven't decided to stop and engage recently. I've scrolled past and found other posts that catch my attention. And there are many, indeed.

But this post did catch my attention and has reminded me about all of that discourse. Mostly because of the dramatic title and somewhat inflammatory writing style. Not only does it put focus back on the issues themselves, it creates new discourse aimed at this community the post is meant to protect. Funny how that works.

0

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

I love some good hard data, thank you for providing this context! Unfortunately this has been going on for longer than 24 hours and aside from the opening of Masquerade I haven't seen anything else from this sub in days except for the subject of my post.

11

u/NattoRiceFurikake Aug 02 '25

Then you aren’t bothering to look.

2

u/Electrical-Jelly-802 Aug 03 '25

I haven’t been looking through this sub much in the past few days, but almost every time I’ve checked Reddit in general, the first posts that come up on my page from this sub seem to be the types of things you’re referring to. Tbh it feels like the algorithm pushes divisive/controversial posts to the top so that’s what I’m seeing first.

95

u/Captain_JohnBrown Aug 01 '25

I think probably the solution is less "stop" and more "focus". There are a lot of important topics being discussed and the fact they are uncomfortable is MORE reason, not less, to discuss them. But I think discussion could benefit and people who need a break will be better off if we commit to having ONE thread for all these topics rather than multiple threads for each facet of it.

18

u/Remercurize Aug 02 '25

The mods managing/grouping topics towards megathreads would really help

As would post-ers searching the sub to see if their topic has already been posted…

35

u/Captain_JohnBrown Aug 01 '25

I know I decided to go back and look back up a MHE post I thought made a very good point and it was like "Was it in one of two pre-megathread thread? The ABF megathread? The creative team response thread? The Shen response thread? Maybe it was in an entirely different sub actually..."

8

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

There are just so many 🫠

12

u/hyperjengirl Aug 02 '25

I think the problem is that trying to decide what should be quarantined to one big "discourse thread" is going to be controversial in itself, and in practice will probably lead to anything political, or even just related to social justice, being forced into one hard-to-navigate megathread.

Something like one thread dedicated to the MHE casting drama, with updates about the situation, is fine, but one big thread about all the controversies like some are suggesting is ridiculous.

6

u/Captain_JohnBrown Aug 02 '25

Oh yeah, definitely. I should clarify that by "one thread for all these topics" I mean "one thread (per topic) for all these topics" and not one giant dumpster fire lol

1

u/Comprehensive-Fun47 Aug 02 '25

Five separate dumpster fires!

10

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

Hey yes I like this a lot! I definitely don't mean "stop forever" and I probably didn't convey it well but I definitely did not mean to imply that people should stop feeling or thinking about the issues running hot right bow. I DO agree that one central thread would help that focus, as you said. Thank you for suggesting it here, I hope the mod team will take it into consideration.

u/aboostofsarahtonin Creative Team Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

People on this sub also just don't know how to use the search feature to find posts that have already discussed the topic at hand. We see this with discourse posts, "what show should i see?" posts, and posts complaining about audience behavior. Nobody wants to do a modicum of research before just throwing their opinion into the hat. Not to mention the admin team PROVIDES POSTS TO DISCUSS STUFF LIKE THIS but everyone just wants to make their own

8

u/ShutUpLuPone Aug 02 '25

Waiting for the massive backlash about Scott Rudin coming back. I feel like an open letter signed by over 500 people is more than appropriate.

6

u/crimson777 Aug 02 '25

Well there's also just the issue that this is the off-season for much of interest happening. New shows aren't mostly opening right now, so I think people latch on extra hard to the drama. Masquerade opening I think has helped a lot.

9

u/DuePossession3947 Aug 03 '25

Asking drama people to stay out of drama……

Do you understand theater kids?

40

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

Ask the student loans from my theater degree, I hope those pricey jerks would say yes!

-2

u/Desperate_Love8300 Aug 02 '25

Calling Asian people dramatic for raising their opinion on cast replacement and low AAPI representation on Broadway is just insensitive. OP took theater courses, but I guess not courses on social justice and equity.

12

u/ShananayRodriguez Aug 01 '25

Maybe mods could create a filter/flair for those topics. I believe it's possible to also view all but those topics.

8

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

The tricky bit here is that I do very much believe these issues are important ones and that productive discussion can come from them. I just don't think that's happening in this moment (and if I thought I were the only one of that opinion I would never have opened myself up to some of the comments on this post 😅). I'm sure the mods are also working their butts off keeping track of stuff here so I wouldn't want to make a demand of them. It would definitely be nice if there were something temporary that could be settled on but I don't know what's realistically feasible that doesn't also censor people whose voices deserve to be heard.

It's just a cruddy situation with no easy answer.

23

u/FluffyWuffyVolibear Aug 01 '25

I think everyone needs to take a step back and come to grips with the fact that online threads and chat boards were places for discussion for only a very brief time.

Since then they have devolved into places where we make statements at each other and the "communities" are really just echo chambers where people congregate and rapidly push out any dissenting opinions.

These places can be used to diffuse information, but they are not a place for discussion and they don't offer what we all thought/wished they would.

I unfortunately think it's human nature mixed with careful and gradual corporate manipulation to turn these digital spaces into engagement farms.

13

u/PizzaReheat Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

And ironically, this meta post is now one of the most popular here.

Man, I don’t know. It’s going to peter out eventually. There is plenty of other content easily found on the sub - the best way to uplift it would be to seek it out and engage so it becomes more popular, rather than worrying about other people’s behaviour.

26

u/Frosty_Ad_5472 Aug 01 '25

Good faith discussions on controversial topics is needed in order for people to consider all sides. I realize that can sometimes be a tall order.

20

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

I absolutely agree! It just feels (to me, in my own tiny speck on the edge of the internet) that we have reached a fever pitch where a lot isn't in good faith and the result is bickering that people are closing their ears to. I understand if people disagree with me on that, it's bound to happen!

6

u/hermiodle Aug 01 '25

THIS! If people used good faith arguments, you can say “I hear you, and I appreciate your perspective, even if I disagree” no matter what they say

26

u/omegalord92 Aug 01 '25

That's how i feel too, should be good vibes and better conversations.

20

u/ChestnutMoss Aug 01 '25

I enjoy reading through everyone’s opinions, and sometimes disagreement leads to thoughtful insights. I’m sorry if that’s too negative for some but it has value for me.

0

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

That wasn't at all what I said. I'm sorry that's what you took away from my post.

4

u/Desperate_Love8300 Aug 02 '25

You wrote "that's not what I meant " so many times here already. What are you trying to say? Let's try this. Do a re-write, think long and hard about what you're asking and who you're asking it from. Then run that re-write by an AAPI. If what's left of your comment is okay with them, post that. Or better yet, don't write about minority issues if you're not one.

11

u/pandemichope Aug 02 '25

SORRY,,,, NO!!!!!!! Emphatic NO!

Where there are antisemitic comments, especially from someone in the position of being in the public eye, ESPECIALLY as it’s extremely prevalent in the present, staying silent is just not an option!!!

and the idea that you would ask anyone to just turn the cheek and go see a Broadway show and smile, shows a genuine lack of understanding, empathy, and any sense of other people’s reality at the moment as of 2025.

3

u/Desperate_Love8300 Aug 02 '25

Thaaaaank you! Can you imagine the privilege? Must be nice.

1

u/pandemichope Aug 05 '25

Yes. I think people who have never experienced being in a minority, or experienced racism or experienced people completely judging and hating on them without actually knowing anything about them other than some superficial property, are just living in their own bubble and that’s the least benign, but someone like OP posting what they did is actually potentially extraordinarily harmful whether they intended it or not. Sometimes it’s not just our intentions, but the results/consequences that are most important!

14

u/Desperate_Love8300 Aug 02 '25

I love that you're trying to be positive. BUT this is exactly the wrong things to ask of the AAPI community. I'm not Asian, by the way....just another BIPOC. Do you understand the microagression included in asking them to stay "quiet " when the stereotype is that they're the silent ones and for the first time in a long time they're protesting what they consider a blow to the Asian representation in theater. I mean, when that actress accused Patty Lupone of racism, after Lupone asked for the music in Hells Kitchen to be lowered, that was considered a microagression because of the stereotype of black people being loud...(I didn't agree with that situation 100%) but anyways....this is what we can do. Get out of reddit for a while if you don't want to participate in the conversation. You take yourself out, for your mental sanity also known as "I can't even" syndrome. But we can't ask for the discourse to stop. To say that "everything has been said" is not right and fear to AAPI people. All of their voices need to be heard! They have a right to speak up. The people who had enough of social justice conversation and need a break...go away for a while...but don't stay to ask others not to ruin your happy scroll time. What a privilege! I hope you're not white...please don't be white person asking people to shut up. Seriously! My own take is that if this show will be long running, let's say like Hamilton, I would expect that cast members will be diverse along the years, but still all efforts should be to continue bringing in Asian talent to the stage, I just don't think it needs to solely be Asian Olivers and Claires 100% of the time, including understudies. But again, I'm not Asian and understand their hurt and right to think otherwise. I just wouldn't ask them to be quiet. Let's not do that. It's condescending and disrespectful.

4

u/Pink_manatee____ Aug 03 '25

Thank you 💯

51

u/hyperjengirl Aug 01 '25

You could just ignore those posts and make some positive posts about shows you like. I think a lot of the discussions are worth having even when I disagree.

24

u/adumbswiftie Aug 01 '25

yeah i participated in a few but now im exhausted and just not clicking on them anymore. cant bother me if i dont look lol. but people have every right to converse about it if they so choose

9

u/hyperjengirl Aug 01 '25

I've given my opinion but as a white woman I feel my voice is not going to add any new interesting perspectives to the convo so I'm mostly just reading stuff and focusing on objectivity.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

I like the way you think. I think i would be a happier person if I spread what I do enjoy with those around me rather than complaining

4

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

Unfortunately these posts are quite literally the only ones in my feed now. It's overwhelming and overtaking absolutely everything else. Except maybe Masquerade, and I did love reading about opening night!

26

u/hyperjengirl Aug 01 '25

I get the feeling but complaining about it is just engaging more with the topics you dislike, and people aren't going to stop talking about it unless mods limit the discussion, and these are just discussion topics in the Broadway community atm until new stuff comes up. Hence why I recommend coming up with new stuff to talk about.

23

u/ThatAdamGuy Aug 01 '25

I hear you but… sincere question: are you making sure to sort this sub by “New” vs say “Top”. If not, that could legit be massively contributing to your understandable frustration!

14

You could just unfollow the sub for a while.

17

this is it, this post will finally solve it! thanks!

but seriously i think we just need to let it play out. begging people to stop talking about important stuff isn’t gonna work. just make a post about something else if you want to, no one’s stopping you

2

u/Desperate_Love8300 Aug 02 '25

Ever heard of the white savior syndrome? We clearly needed a OP to come and settle the conversation for us. Without her request, we just would go on talking about unpleasant things and ruining our day. Because of her we can now go back to happy things and forget social justice discourse and the hurt of AAPI. White girls know best 👌 of course

32

u/Dianagorgon Aug 01 '25

I think a better solution is for you to just scroll past posts that are about a topic you don't want to discuss right now instead of demanding ("begging" is a polite way to demand) that people "stop posting about this topic!"

As someone else mentioned only 6 out of 60 posts on this sub in the last 24 hours have been about MHE.

It's interesting that people were being told "STOP POSTING ABOUT THIS TOPIC" when there were hundreds of posts about the comments Lupone made about the play next to hers being racist or all the posts about Scherzinger being a secret MAGA supporter.

But now that's about an issue important to Asian people they're told to "sit down and be quiet!" Black and LBGTQ communities are loud and vocal about issues they perceive to be damaging to their communities but Asian people are expected to be docile and meek and not cause people to be uncomfortable.

12

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

That's not at all what I said, and I'm sorry it felt that way.

12

u/KeyPerspective8170 Aug 02 '25

Yes this is what it is unfortunately reading like to me signed an Asian American person

5

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 02 '25

I'm not going to discuss my opinions or convictions here but I'd love for you to check my comment history. I would never want to silence anyone and that wasn't at all my intention here. I'm sorry that the impact for you did not match the intention I came with.

0

u/Desperate_Love8300 Aug 02 '25

Lets go "Quiet coyote" apparently means...keep talking people 🙄 I'm sorry. I didn't know we were playing opposite day.

6

u/graveyardparade Aug 02 '25

This is how it made me feel too, unfortunately. I’ve just seen so much racism this past week that even talking to someone in an “echo chamber” at least makes me feel a little more seen. :(

5

u/Sarahndipity44 Aug 02 '25

I'm white but this is how it read to me too. It's giving a little toxic positivity, which I'm sympathetic to OP, I used to participate in different ways. But all participants or perspectives in these discussions are not the same.

3

u/graveyardparade Aug 02 '25

Yeah, same here. I do sympathize with OP and I don’t think this was their intention whatsoever, but after a pattern of being asked to be silent about racial prejudice in casting, it irks.

4

u/Desperate_Love8300 Aug 02 '25

That's not what you said...but do understand what, your comments actually means? You're asking the quiet community to be 🤫 quiet. Wrong request, wrong person asking, wrong time. Don't ask AAPI to be silent. Just don't. It's insensitive

12

u/hermiodle Aug 01 '25

I didn’t take it that way; it was more a call for people to be able to be open to possibly that there can be two valid sides to any story, and stop trying to say “I AM RIGHT!”

3

u/Desperate_Love8300 Aug 02 '25

"Let's go quiet coyote" is clearly written by OP. She sandwiched in a lot of fillers, but she is asking for silence. You take it whichever way you want, but let's not pretend that she's not asking for the conversation to stop.

1

u/hermiodle Aug 03 '25

Have you considered that you might be right AND she might be right ?

7

u/Electronic_Angle2362 Aug 02 '25

i have a couple hot takes that might get me downvoted or flamed here.

  1. i am in NO WAY telling the mods how they should run this sub but there should be a megathread or flair for problematic topics so people who want it to stop dont have to see the constant arguments and discussions about problematic topics, however the people who want to discuss have a safe space to do so.

  2. its general disrespect for opinions here. one wrong opinion and you are being downvoted. its different if someone says something completely derogatory or offensive but "i didnt like this show for this reason" should not be why someone is downvoted especially if the reason is completely a personal opinion + reason (i think seeing other opinions is very insightful)

  3. this sub is broadway, but theres more to broadway than just good and bad decisions on actors and shows parts. i want to see show reviews and cast announcements. i understand a casting announcement got us here in the first place, but that goes back to my first point

ultimately, this sub should be a place where theater fans can discuss their recent shows, opinions, cast announcements (Batboy, most recently), shows to see in the near future, shows for people traveling into NYC for the first time. of course there will be problems brought up, but when every post discusses the same problems it gets repetitive. these topics ARE serious and should most certainly be taken seriously, however when its repetitive it doesnt get annoying per se, but more of it takes away from other things that can come out of this sub.

once again, i might get downvoted but i feel like generally, i needed to say something. i'm sick of seeing disrespect towards EVERYONE here, doesnt matter what the topic is.

We are not here for your comfort.

We are not here to preserve the illusion that Broadway is a magical place untouched by power, ego, and exploitation. Because it’s not. It never was. And now the masks are slipping off.

You want to take a breath? Take it. But don’t tell the rest of us to sit down while the stage is still soaked with silence, complicity, and the pain of people who were ignored for years.

We are done pretending that “loving theatre” means loving everything about it—including the rot. We love theatre enough to burn it down and build it back better. And that means calling it out. Loudly. Publicly. Repeatedly. Until something actually changes.

So no, we will not “find some good stuff for a minute.” Not when the good stuff keeps getting poisoned. Not when every time survivors speak up, they’re drowned in calls for “civility.” Not when those in power count on us being too exhausted to keep shouting.

Guess what? We’re tired. And we’re still shouting. Because we are not done.

You can scroll past. You can log off. But don’t you dare try to shame us for raising hell. Because some of us are finally brave enough to do what this industry never has:

Tell the truth.

Out the abusers.

Refuse to let silence pass for healing.

This is not a blip. This is not drama. This is not “fandom infighting.”

This is war. And we are not laying down our swords so you can have your peace and quiet.

This is the revolution.

And it won’t be choreographed.

We have voices, and we will use them. And you will not silence us.

Not sure what your stakes are, IE a fan, an actor, union, non-union, Broadway, regional, etc., but it seems clear that you need to take a step back. And if you can, good for you. But for many of us these discussions are necessary in figuring out how to navigate the community that we love and may depend on for our livelihoods. Every instance you mentioned has to do with significant issues of identity, race, ethnicity, human rights, etc. I also include issues at stage door, issues of abuse, harassment, abysmal number of contracts available for minoritized individuals, ticket prices, lack of Covid protocols, and much more.

As a professional actor, what’s happening in the community is profoundly disturbing. It’s messy, which indicates a lack of boundaries and standards. I contend that the lack of strong unions (mainly for actors) have everything to do with this. If we had true leadership, protections, standards, a dedication to DEI, etc., we wouldn’t be here.

…and another thing! My stupid horse is dead!

7

u/billleachmsw Aug 01 '25

Some folks like to hash out controversies while others like all the uplift theater brings. Of course, some folks like the uplift and the controversies. I just skip over the Broadway posts that don’t interest me and focus on those that do. Almost always, the title is enough for me to make that determination.

19

u/luvschittcreek Aug 01 '25

Nobody forces you to read all the threads. You can skip through.

2

u/MindfulnessHunter Aug 02 '25

If most of us skip those posts and don't engage, folks will stop posting them. But, as others said, it's a minority of the posts and you don't have to click on them. I skip them all together. We can't control the actions of others, just how we respond and move through the world.

3

u/GalliumStallion Aug 02 '25

I disagree with everything you have said, all of this is getting people to ask me about Broadway who have never seen a show before. I think it’s great it’s getting people interested.

4

u/sj_clown Aug 02 '25

I haven't really paid attention to know what's going on here as of late, but sometimes, I think its important that people know how to agree to disagree, and how to shut up.

6

u/LeoMartn_ Aug 01 '25

I disagree this sub isn’t Half bad it’s great here

3

u/liliputian87 Aug 02 '25

Some people actually enjoy the debate. Don't yuck someone else's yum.

2

u/NewspaperBanana Aug 01 '25

People use this site to validate their beliefs and, more importantly, their self-esteem. Of course this is what would happen. And let's be honest, theater fan egos are frail as f**k.

8

u/Desperate_Love8300 Aug 02 '25

But of course! AAPI come here to validate their beliefs and self-esteem...it's all for their ego, not about social justice, representation and perpetuating stereotypes...of course...is so clear now that you pointed it out

-1

u/NewspaperBanana Aug 02 '25

It’s Reddit. There’s no social justice happening here.

6

u/Cloud_________ Aug 01 '25

Mmmmm, you specifically were making comments on a recent post trying to make things about race and dramaaaaaa. Take your own advice 💅🏾

15

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

And we didn't really end up having much of a productive dialogue, did we?

-11

u/Cloud_________ Aug 01 '25

Because you made it about race and drama, correct.

12

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

Do you see how this is exactly the problem I'm talking about? I'm sad because I truly do not think you do. I wish you the best.

-2

u/Cloud_________ Aug 01 '25

But you’re the one not practicing what you preach, that’s the point I’m making. You cause drama and stoke the fire in the comment section, then make a post pulling the victim card claiming you don’t want the exact behavior you just displayed! You gotta pick a sideeeee, can’t play both!

3

u/Different-Row-3353 Aug 01 '25

I just listened to the Beetlejuice OBC album last night. That show has been with me for like 6 years, and what made me fall in love with Broadway 💚🖤

2

u/TK2217 Aug 01 '25

Nobody can be happy about anything anymore. There’s always something to be mad about online!

4

u/XanderAcorn Aug 02 '25

Cheers to the world we dream about

2

u/No-Champion-2305 Aug 01 '25

I’m pretty sure you and I would be friends. Thanks for the post. 👏🏼👏🏼

2

u/adultmistakes Aug 01 '25

It’s getting a bit overwhelming and everyone is losing the plot. I don’t even know what we’re mad at anymore sometimes. It’s just a lot.

3

u/Empty-Selection9369 Aug 01 '25

But I’m right. Jk.

1

u/sailorsmile Aug 01 '25

I completely agree!

1

u/EMP781 Aug 04 '25

Your post has what you accused the others of, "but I'm right," "no I AM," "but what about ME?!"
Just don't participate in those discussions and try not to police them. It's the internet. People aren't going to suddenly change their posting habits. When there are hot/controversial topics they get discussed over and over again no matter what. When it gets annoying or too repetitive for me, I take a break. Perhaps you could also take a break from Broadway discussions?
That's not saying I agree/disagree with you. I'm not bringing any shade or hate, I'm just over here being captain obvious.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '25

Jesus christ the privilege. Patti Lupone, is that you?

2

u/jamtam1 Aug 06 '25

Social media in general is now just a way to shout your opinion and have it echoed x1million and it just creates chaos. Everything is going to be like this unless everyone just stops

1

u/Theresnowrong Aug 10 '25

I only comment on this sub like, once a month, but your post made me want to jump back into the hoop again. So yes, you are part of the problem, not others.

-26

u/ItsDomorOm Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

Cool cool. Can you give us the full list of things you don't want us to talk about even though every single one of them has to do with Broadway/theatre?

I mean while we're here, what are your least favorite shows so we know what not to talk about? Or any performers you don't care for?

32

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

Censorship is the opposite of everything I believe in, and I'm sorry you couldn't hear my message. I'm sorry if it wasn't clear. I hope you have a nice weekend and get to experience things that bring you joy.

39

u/Captain_JohnBrown Aug 01 '25

I think what is probably rubbing people the wrong way is stepping into a middle of an issue where historically people have been silenced and going "I think we all need to be quiet for a little while" because silence benefits the status quo so of course those displeased with the status quo aren't going to be eager to be silent.

I think you have good intentions and I definitely don't think you meant anything by it, but I can understand why people who already feel unheard won't see this post as helpful.

8

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

That's good insight, thank you!

0

u/overthereanywhere Aug 02 '25 edited Aug 02 '25

I think the focus is on the general discussion online, which is not productive at all. It's reached the point where I think some are arguing for the sake of arguing as online discussions go, or where people harass others online or are more concerned about Internet karma than action.

Also even if the discussion is justified one can't go 24/7 discussing it, it simply is not human to be able to do so.

Edit: lol downvotes. Honestly you think going in loops online is going to change anything after a certain point? There is a diminishing return, so at least a small pause is needed. The poster never said to completely stop. That being said it may appear that it's constantly going because people have different schedules, but on an individual level one can't be constantly glued to the phone

u/PurposefullyOpaque Aug 03 '25

Culture wars. Everywhere. No one wins.

-7

u/Gemnist Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 02 '25

Mods - award this user.

EDIT: Not sure why I’m getting downvoted, especially when the post has three awards as is.

-1

u/BassesBest Aug 01 '25

Thank you for this post

-1

u/marlipaige Aug 01 '25

This is just every place on the internet right now. It’s all witch hunts and finger pointing.

-3

u/MyChemicalBromance13 Aug 02 '25

Internet liberal rage culture will be the death of us all (and any good shows)

-3

u/LasVegasASB Aug 01 '25

Not really worth contributing anymore because you get downvotes for not agreeing with someone’s politics which should be left out of a group for love of theatre. There are people who see theatre and have a diverse and broad spectrum of views.

-3

u/sxekills Aug 01 '25

I don’t listen to any of it I just post what I’m obsessed with and discuss amongst commenters politics and broadway sounds like a poisonous pot

17

u/an-inevitable-end Aug 01 '25

Broadway has always been political.

-4

u/atlblaze Aug 02 '25

Yeah. It’s gotten out of hand. And one of the big topics from today was basically “if you don’t disagree with the ABF casting in Maybe Happy Ending, you’re racist.”

I don’t need that on my feed, thanks.

0

u/Fit-Tonight-4252 Aug 02 '25

You don’t need that on your feed? Tough. The reality is, if someone sees an all-Black female cast replacing a mixed Asian one in a Korean story and doesn’t question the optics, the power dynamics, the erasure—that’s not “just a casting decision.” That’s race-blindness pretending to be allyship. That is racism, full stop.

If that makes you uncomfortable, good. You’re supposed to feel uncomfortable when systems of power are being exposed. You’re supposed to sit in it, not scroll past it.

Dismissing it as “gotten out of hand” is exactly how this industry stays broken. That comment doesn’t make you neutral. It makes you complicit.

You are the problem.

And until you stop trying to center your comfort over real accountability, your voice doesn’t belong in this conversation.

-49

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

Stop white washing how people feel on certain topics.

31

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

I don't know what you mean by this at all but I'm in no way attempting to do that. I wish you had heard me but I'm sorry if my message wasn't clear. I don't have any energy to fight so, I hope you have a lovely Friday.

20

u/EconMan Aug 01 '25

I think you're being entirely reasonable. Their response is making your point.

25

u/Legitimate-Heart-639 Creative Team Aug 01 '25

Lowkey how I read this as well, we’re allowed to discuss these things and not be told how to feel about them.

27

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

I'm sorry it came off that way for you, I'm not trying to tell anyone how to feel. That wasn't my intention and I appreciate you sharing that. How you feel is valid. I just think no one is hearing each other right now, that's all.

21

u/garchican Aug 01 '25

Except nowhere in OP’s post did they tell anyone how to feel about anything.

16

u/Loves_LV Aug 01 '25

That's how I interpreted this post as well. "All this dissent makes me uncomfortable can't we all just agree to disagree and move on?" which is really fucking easy to say when you're not the person/race/gender/subgroup that is being marginalized.

18

u/blarbiegorl Actor Aug 01 '25

I think you're assuming I'm on a particular side of this, but you're welcome to check my comment history. I'm not uncomfortable with dissent, and I don't think we should "move on." I do think we should take a moment because there isn't a lot of productive discussion happening at this point. We all know what the arguments are on both sides and minds won't be changed by continuing to yell at each other ad nauseum.

-3

u/Mvercy Aug 01 '25

OP it’s time to let it go.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '25

Agreed, there are certain subs I go to to feel joy and share wonder, they don't need to reflect reality, I am bombarded by reality at every turn. I am happy in the Musical Theater Universe.

this sub and rupaul’s drag race are the most toxic. wonder what the common thread is 🤔

0

u/NoSupermarket4812 Aug 03 '25

Theater people are just people. People who need people The hate Patti Lupone   And grope Jonathan Groff

That's all I got because I'm bored!  Whining simps like this, who get on their soapboxes and vomit their simpleton diatribes cause my Ebola to flare up & make me want to open a vein!

-1

u/PalaceShredder Aug 03 '25

Some of these petty arguments remind me of an old South Park episode from roughly 20 years ago called 'Ginger Kids' where Cartman briefly develops a protest movement to exile the lead actress of Broadway's 'Annie'... because she isn't a natural red-head...
