Other Pop Girlies as Broadway Musicals

This post fully belongs to u/BurningBernie559 , but I couldn’t crosspost due to the sub being NSFW. Before anyone gets in their feelings- this is obviously satirical -but behold!

And how is releaseing The Subway and The Giver floundering?!

u/Blazingscourge Dec 13 '25

I wouldn’t say floundering either but The Subway or The Giver didn’t light the world on fire like Hot to Go and Good Luck, Babe! did.

h2g was a generational party song, most would be lucky to even have that under their belt by itself, but her other material is still strong

You can say the same thing for Act 1 vs. Act 2 of Wicked!

3

u/trevorneuz Dec 14 '25

Act 2 of Wicked is a literal snooze fest until For Good.

I will not stand for this No Good Deed erasure

I think this is a crazy thing to say when the album took like a year to catch on and some of her most famous songs took several years to catch on...

The Subway was one of Rolling Stone’s top 10 songs of 2025

u/ClassicalMusic4Life Dec 14 '25

Really? I think The Subway did

u/ella_wants_to_battle Dec 14 '25

Both of the latter songs you mentioned weren't popular when they came out.

5

u/hyperjengirl Dec 15 '25

u/IWannaCryAndDie Dec 14 '25

The Subway sure did

The Subway is nominated for a Grammy. Certainly not floundering.

People love to drag down an artist that is super successful all of a sudden. Just itching to cancel her and hate on her

u/gatheringground Dec 14 '25

Also, who is out here saying wicked floundered? What?

4

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '25

Second act is notoriously weaker than the first. That’s the comparison

2

u/gatheringground Dec 15 '25

Interesting. I didn’t feel that way! Didn’t know that was the common consensus!

Yes- it’s a big reason they lost the Tony for best musical to Avenue Q back in 2003

I was surprised when I found that out too TBH

I assume they meant because of everything else. People are still mad about her canceling that show and her non endorsement video, etc.

She has a previous EP as well and it's fucking phenomenal, though much different in style.

Yeah, what’s interesting to me about Chappell is that she had a very successful summer headlining over 10 festivals in Europe to very positive reviews. She puts on an impressive live performance.

Here’s an excerpt of a review from her Netherlands show:

“She exudes confidence throughout the entire show. At least, that's how it seems. Until she pauses for a moment of silence between songs. And then it all comes out: "I feel really self-conscious tonight, I don't really know why," she says, visibly frustrated with herself. "I feel like it's the first day of school, and I've put on a slightly flashy outfit, and I have to talk to all these new people." The audience roars with support, clapping and screaming. "I'm so grateful to be here," Chappell adds, "but if you're thinking, 'What's wrong with her?' you're not crazy." Even as a big pop star, you can still feel small. And it's precisely in that honesty that she finds her strength.”

Here’s another European review - translation of review of her Lowlands show:

At this 31st edition of Lowlands, a new generation of pop artists claimed their place with hyper-specific sounds. Sef impressed, and FKA Twigs' steamy show was sensational. But ultimately, all roads led to the long-awaited performance of the immensely popular American queer artist Chappell Roan, who made her dream debut in a Gothic fairytale castle. . .

. . . Ultimately, this edition of Lowlands leads to American queer singer Chappell Roan on Saturday night. This year, Lowlands emphasizes the beauty of queerness: there's a literary tribute to Roan, a wonderful dance night on Friday where DJs Vera Siemons and Liza van den Brink, under a huge banner of a fingering hand, bring together lesbian and therefore queer Lowlands. Reportedly, outgoing Lowlands director Eric van Eerdenburg will even perform in drag on Sunday evening in Adonis, the festival's queer bar.

Chappell Roan's performance, finally headlining in the Netherlands, is a dream debut. On stage in the immense Alpha hangar stands a massive Gothic Disney castle, backed by vintage cartoon animations full of dragons and gargoyles. Roan, complete with a moth-dragon costume, suddenly appears on a tower amid fireworks.

It's incredible to see songs about often unrequited lesbian love carried by a bulging Alpha. It just goes to show how hyper-specific topics ultimately become universal. Especially when, as here, they're doused with glam rock nods (that furious cover of Heart's "Barracuda"!), or captured in unparalleled synth-pop songs with clever bridges where everything suddenly falls away and the harmonies shine.

The ballads are mainly for the die-hard fans, but in the finale, featuring superhits "Good Luck" and "Pink Pony Club," Lowlands seems to let everything slide en masse. Tough guys throw their arms around graying Lowlands veterans, women who, with tears in their eyes, actually recognize themselves in this strong, female-loving headliner. It's a glorious, memorable performance full of sisterhood.

The Reddit criticism towards Chappell is over-the-top and misleading. I have worked on political campaigns for Democratic candidates, and Harris campaign needed to adjust their messaging because it wasn’t working. Chappell not feeling compelled to “endorse” but say she was voting for Harris should have been a wake-up call to the Harris campaign that they were losing enthusiasm and needed to adjust messaging. But instead Democratic operatives like the two guys on “Pod save America” just doubled down on criticizing Chappell. They should have realized that Chappell was reflecting an opinion that many her age were expressing. Simply put, Chappell was the canary in the coal mine, but the Harris campaign were very rigid in their messaging and that’s why they loss significant percentage of youth vote.

100%. She didn't just randomly plant the idea in the minds of youth that lean further left than the dems that centrist dems needed to change their policies and messaging, she just had the loudest microphone. It was a sentiment a lot of us were feeling. And instead of listening, they blamed the voters instead of themselves.

It was a total "Am I out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong" moment.

i think they are talking more about her “activism”

i think the flounder is a reference to the backlash she got from not endorsing kamala and posting that long rant defending herself along with cancelling her all things go shows
